On his radio show today, right-wing talker Mike Gallagher responded to the California Supreme Court’s decision yesterday to bar “doctors from invoking their religious beliefs as a reason to deny treatment to gays and lesbians.” Gallagher agreed with a caller who wondered if the ruling meant “pedophiles could adopt”:
DAVID: The question I had told your screener, I said, if I’m understanding, California said because of sexual orientation, they can’t deny you service, so, does that mean pedophiles could adopt?
GALLAGHER: Well that’s just, that’s a great question. I mean, if you work in an adoption agency and a guy comes in saying, “I like little girls and I want to adopt a nine-year old girl and I’m going to probably sleep with her while I’m at it,” could the adoption agency person say, “well, excuse me, my religious beliefs find that, lead me to find that repugnant, I’m not going to do it.” Can he then turn around and sue the adoption agency and win like the lesbian did?

Gallagher and his caller’s claims are ridiculous. Sexual contact with a minor under the age of 18 is illegal in California. In fact, California passed the “toughest” sex offender law in the nation in 2006. No matter how much the right wing tries to insist upon it, being gay is not the equivalent of being a pedophile.

Adoptions agencies place children with families wishing to adopt them. There is a careful screening process. Not just for pedophilia, but for a host of other red flags that indicate a home might not be a good environment for a child.
Fertility clinics do not screen for home environment. They screen for health issues — such as if a woman can safely be pregnant without danger to her health.
Furthermore, there are big differences between homosexuality and pedophilia — although that doesn’t stop the homophobes from trotting out that association every chance they get. Most child molesters are heterosexual.

But let me say this: during the Age of AIDS, some doctors REFUSED to give an AIDS diagnosis because of their “beliefs!” It was a time when layman had to look through medical records and find out if the t-cell count was low enough so that people could avail themselves of San Francisco services (note: “FAITH-BASED” agencies didn’t exist. The Southern Baptist Convention still doesn’t have a single one, except in Africa).
Organized religion has been making “outcasts” “lepers” “heathens” and “pagans” for many years. It won’t give up on stigmatizing gays. Ever. The doctors who refuse to treat patients because they are gay are not doctors in the true sense.

bit, in one of his duties, had occasion to speak with a young homosexual male. Man needed a place to stay for a day or two. bit asked him about his health. He said he thought he was Ok, but that he had knowingly had sex with another man who was HIV+. He remarked that at the time that he did this he just didn’t care.
bit understands that this degree of “self loathing” that would cause someone to “not care” is common among homosexuals.
Would you choose to adopt a lifestyle in which you encounter hatred on a daily basis?
In answer to this question, how about another question? Why would someone knowingly chose to drink themselves to death. It happens.

That’s a fair point because I actually do believe in a “Higher power” and that that higher power created, or more, allowed evolution. The reason I didn’t frame it that way was an attempt to allow for easier communication with someone of Daryll’s apparent world-view.

based on your 1 example? If I know of a heterosexual male who has raped women, by your logic, I can make the assumption that most strait guys are rapists and I’m sure we could agree that that would be utterly ridiculous.
Perhaps you should consider that the “self loathing” that your friend was experiencing was a product of a society that makes him feel that he is somehow wrong for being who he is.
I’m not gay, but I have enough gay friends and relatives to know that it wasn’t their “choice”. They would have “chosen” a much simpler life if it were really up to them… some of them even did “choose” to live that simpler life, but it really just didn’t work out because it was a lie.

Except bit didn’t reach this “understanding” through logic, and bit doesn’t mean to suggests that this one example describes all homosexuals.
