Rice: Military power is ‘not the way to deal in the 21st century.’

Yesterday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice sharply criticized Russia for relying on its “military power” to accomplish its goals. Ironically, she said that it “is not the way to deal in the 21st century.” From her remarks yesterday en route to Belgium:

putrice.jpg But I just want to emphasize again, Russia is a state that is unfortunately using the one tool that it has always used, that will make it – that – when it wishes to deliver a message, and that’s its military power. That’s not the way to deal in the 21st century. And if Russia wishes to make a different strategic choice, as President Medvedev said, this is a bad way to start.

Salon’s Glenn Greenwald responds to Rice’s remarks: “Just during the time Rice has served in the Bush administration, we bombed, invaded and occupied Afghanistan; did the same to Iraq; repeatedly bombed Somalia, killing all sorts of civilians; fed bombs to Israel as they invaded and bombed Lebanon; top political officials (led by John McCain and Joe Lieberman) have repeatedly threatened, and advocated, that the same be done to a whole host of other countries, including Iran and Syria.”

    Yeah

The "way to do it" is to bullshit , lie , and move incompetent crony ass-kissing morons like yourself into positions of power ..............And then do it.

Just switch the countries and presidunce and you get exactly the same thing.

    Pot meet kettle.

Condi was for using military power to deal in the 21st century before she was against it.

  4. octamethyl Says:

    That's hliarious.
Like Bush saying that a regime must 'listen to its people'.

  5. DRxJ Says:

Maybe Rice was just a tad bit giddy over her latest shoe purchase, and forgot
THAT WE INVADED IRAQ, USING OUR MILITARY MIGHT, NOT IN THE 20TH CENTURY, BUT THE 21ST!!!

Thank you for allowing me to "yell".

  6. upside99 Says:

UHHH, Condi-shoes, Wasn't the invasion of Iraq in 2003? And that is in the 21st Century? And you and your fellow NeoCon Repugs did the dirty deed. So why didn't you take your own advice, Ms. AssKlown?

  7. Max-1 Says:

Close, shoeless, but in fact Condi is STILL for using military power to deal, as long as it's the US using it. She's always been against other nations using it.

  9. misshusseinmolly Says:

    Um...why wasn't Rice saying this in 2001? In 2003?

I guess IOKIYTUS (It's OK if you're the United States). But certainly not if you're Russia.

Does Rice even see the incongruency of her remarks? Did McCain, when he said something similar recently? Does Rice realize that one could substitute the words "United States" for "Russia" in the first two sentences of her remarks and she would have one of the main criticisms made toward her boss?

Now, now -- Rice has said and done plenty of things that make us react everywhere on the scale from "huh?" to "aaaaarrrrggh!" As have many people in the Bush administration. But as deep as our frustration is, we should NEVER advocate beating somebody up, especially while drawing parallels to domestic abuse. It's not cool, and we're better than that.

  17. barfly Says:

When Bush was selected by the Supreme Court, the decision Bush v. Gore specifically stated that it couldn't be used as precedent for any other future rulings.

This statement by Rice is just another manifestation of the Bushies' feelings of moral and ethical exceptionalism, or, IOKYAB, that grew from his initial installment.

  18. Doc Rock Says:

I would prefer leadership by example rather than "do as we say, not as we do." There is no moral force behind what Condi says because she and her bosses squandered it all on preemptive war, torture, and kangaroo courts.

And the Tool-in-Chief is the best example of the old adage: "When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail." While this little tin cowboy has been playing whack-a-mole all over the world, our economy, reputation and prospects for our future have pretty much fallen apart.

What can you say about Condi? Guess she's just realizing that her BFF Georgie isn't going to leave Laura for her after all.

OT, but so great is this little tidbit from Cafferty (love him, hate him, sometimes he just sums it all up just right):

"George Bush's record as a student, military man, businessman and leader of the free world is one of constant failure. And the part that troubles me most is he seems content with himself.

He will leave office with the country $10 trillion in debt, fighting two wars, our international reputation in shambles, our government cloaked in secrecy and suspicion that his entire presidency has been a litany of broken laws and promises, our citizens' faith in our own country ripped to shreds. Yet Bush goes bumbling along, grinning and spewing moronic one-liners, as though nobody understands what a colossal failure he has been.

I fear to the depth of my being that John McCain is just like him."

  40. vinylspear Says:

    Today's vocabulary word: Sociopath

Sociopaths exhibit glibness and superficial charm

    Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

    Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."

    Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

    Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

    Incapacity for Love

    Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.

    Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

    Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

    Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

    Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

    Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.

Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

    Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

A genetic defect can be excused. It's an act of God, after all. I suspect that they behave the way they do because they've discovered that it works to get elected,. and it works to get themselves on talk shows.

On the other hand, we have Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda (not to be confused with Al Qaeda in Iraq) -- how many more attacks from that group do you think we should allow before we finally get serious about doing something?

So the story is still that Russia invaded Georgia? And they are ignoring the fact that it was Georgia who initiated the attacks against the Russian peacekeepers and other civilians in break away region of South Ossetia. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7550354.stm

Of course they wouldn't acknowledge this because they needed a reason to pressure Poland into allowing us to set up our missile defense system to protect them against the big, bad Russia.

Yeah, and this statement is coming from not only an unqualified Secretary of State that is too busy to go shoe shooping rather than dealing with important issues [like Katrina for instance] but this is a woman that never served in the military. And I guess, once again, the "military power" used to invade Afghanistan and Iraq on false pretenses for the past 5 years was all just a dream, right Condi?

I believe it is a testament to the corporate censored news media that Rice can feel confident enough to say something to incredibly, blatantly, obviously hypocritical and wrong.
