Bush Claims He Worked ‘Closely’ With Vets Organizations On GI Bill; VFW Said It ‘Didn’t Have Much Input’

Earlier today, President Bush delivered his final speech as president to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and once again — like Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) two days prior — tried to portray himself as a champion of the 21st century GI Bill. Bush said that his administration worked “closely and effectively” with the VFW. As an example, he cited the legislation:

BUSH: When the history of the last eight years is finally written, it will show how closely and effectively my administration and the VFW have worked together on behalf of America’s veterans. [...] Earlier this year, I was pleased to sign a piece of legislation that the VFW has long championed, a GI Bill for the 21st century.

Watch it:

Not only is Bush misleading the VFW about his support for the bill, but the VFW actually opposed a competing measure that Bush supported.

The Pentagon and the White House consistently resisted Sen. Jim Webb’s (D-VA) strong bipartisan effort to pass the bill. They warned of the “harm” Webb’s bill would do to the military and objected to its generous education benefits to returning veterans.

Moreover, the Bush administration wasn’t working very close with the VFW on the bill as Bush suggested. The VFW endorsed Webb’s proposal in June 2007, and continued to press for the bill this year, rejecting the White House’s concerns. In fact, the VFW said they “didn’t have much input” on the competing proposal Bush (and McCain) supported and called it “very partisan.”

While the VFW honored Webb — the real champion of the GI Bill — with a gold medal and citation of merit for his leadership on the issue, Bush can probably trust Fox News to take his bait.

Digg It!

Repukes trying to take credit for something that actually helps our GI’s that they had nothing to do with….typical.

  6. DRxJ says:

I think I get it now.
When this administration opposes an honorable and non partisan bill that eventually passes, it takes the credit.
When this administration fails miserably within it’s own policies, it blames Clinton.

I truly believe that a NeoCON can never accept defeat, and is all too willing to divert the political situation when the heat is on them.

I also breath in oxygen, need food and water for energy, and plan to eventually die.

It has now been proven; to be a Repug you have to be able to lie your asses off and not blink. Quite a trick and one that has been perfected by this whole pile of scumbags.

Watch the vid ; the moronic piece of shit is greeted with applause after delivering this line :

BUSH: Earlier this year, I was pleased to sign a piece of legislation that the VFW has long championed, a GI Bill for the 21st century.

I don’t mean to bad-mouth Vets ; but where in the hell was someone to yell out “You mean the one you threatened to veto , jackass?” ………..?

Vets risk their lives ; there isn’t one willing to risk irritating this sorry sack of shit with the truth ?

Or are the Vets pre-screened like every Chimpy function (which I suspect is the way it is)………?

  23. leftzone says:

I agree with spencer’s mom; Obama and crew need to jump on every lie that comes out of their mouths. It’s time to stop being “civil” and call a spade a spade. no more pussy footing around.

  27. Zimzone says:

As a Vet, I resemble that remark.

So, an AWOL Air Guardsman & 5 deferrment Dickstick are VFW heroes?

    Gag me.

While mold is inhaled by troubled, sick young soldiers in another military base, Bushit world uses doublespeak to take credit for something they never did.

That’s like Condi saying Countries don’t invade another sovereign State in the 21st Century.

Liars, cheaters, chickenshits and blowhards; the lot of ‘em.

spencers mom, I heard today that Joe Biden will be the pick not just for his foreign policy experience but because he’s the best fighter around. Maybe they’re waiting until he’s announced and then they’re going to let him loose.

  33. leftcoast says:

Bush is beginning to sound more like Fox News with each passing waning day in left in office. Fox won the right to lie to the public in the courts, and Bush won the right to lie to the public from Nancy Pelosi.

  35. leftcoast says:

Shayne- Biden would be a great VP. He has a way of getting straight to the heart of any issue and concisely explaining it.

  36. leftcoast says:

I can’t remember the last time Bush made a speech in front of a bi-partisan non-affiliated group.

  37. gummitch says:

I’m very disappointed not to read goon_golly’s explanation of what Bush really said.

  38. jb says:

Maybe Bush worked closely with Jeff Gannon.

  39. Winski says:

    Again…Bush is an idiot.

I wonder how far his mom and dad have to go to find a place to hide every time this moron opens his mouth…

  40. EugeneDebs says:

This is no suprise. Bush is a liar. The man lies like most people breathe. He lies so much I was suprised when I found out his name really is George. I think he gets up in the morning and lies about what he wants for breakfast just to stay in pracitce. This does bring up an interesting point though. I blame Raygun. He just lied constantly also and the GOP learned there is no downside to them lying to their brainwashed base. No matter how often it is PROVEN that the last ten things a Raygun or Chimpy Mcshortbus said were lies the next thing out of their mouth is gospel to the hivemind of the rightwing. So why SHOULDNT they lie. It is a wonderful advantage. If the liberal candidate keeps lying to me he will lose my support but if Bush came to the typical Limborg dittobots house and ate his kid for dinner they would make appologies and probably blame it on liberals and the war on Terra. Its become a charicature of actual political discourse. If they watched Bush sodomize a GOAT live on CNN they would rush in to rooms like this to tell us how wonderful it was the way Chimpy McCokespoon supported 4-H

  41. kwaayesnama says:

McCain does not FLIP FLOP when voting for the American Military – He always votes against them:

John McCain claims that his military service is one of his qualifications to be commander in chief. I seriously doubt his dedication to the American military. His voting record shows his lack of concern for our bravest men and women.

John McCain missed 10 of the past 14 votes on Iraq.

John McCain in September 2007: voted against the Webb amendment calling for adequate troop rest between deployments.

John McCain in July 2007: voted against a plan to drawdown troop levels in Iraq.

John McCain in March 2007 was too busy to vote on a bill that would require the start of a drawdown in troop levels within 120 days with a goal of withdrawing nearly all-combat troops within one year.

John McCain in February 2007 didn’t even bother to show up to vote against a resolution condemning it. For such a strong supporter of the escalation, McCain didn’t even bother to show up and vote for it.

John McCain in June 2006, voted against a resolution that Bush start withdrawing troops but with no timeline to do so.

John McCain in May 2006, voted against an amendment that would provide $20 million to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for health care facilities.

John McCain in April 2006, was one of only 13 Senators to vote against $430,000,000 for the Department of Veteran Affairs for Medical Services for outpatient care and treatment for veterans.

John McCain in March 2006, voted against increasing Veterans medical services funding by $1.5 billion in FY 2007 to be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes.

John McCain in March 2004, once again voted for abusive tax loopholes over veterans when he voted against creating a reserve fund to allow for an increase in Veterans’ medical care by $1.8 billion by eliminating abusive tax loopholes. Jeez, McCain really loves those tax loopholes for corporations, since he voted for them over our veterans’ needs.

John McCain in October 2003, voted to table an amendment by Senator Dodd that called for an additional $322,000,000 for safety equipment for United States forces in Iraq and to reduce the amount provided for reconstruction in Iraq by $322,000,000.

John McCain in April 2003, urged other Senate members to table a vote (which never passed) to provide more than $1 billion for National Guard and Reserve equipment in Iraq related to a shortage of helmets, tents, bullet-proof inserts, and tactical vests.

If he believes that we should stay the course for as long as possible he should be willing to support the people he puts in harms way.

John McCain is not a friend of the American Military.
