Last week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) walked into a bipartisan wave of condemnation in Colorado when he told the Pueblo Chieftain that the 1922 Colorado River compact, which governs the allocation of the river’s water among seven states, “needs to be renegotiated over time”:
“I don’t think there’s any doubt the major, major issue is water and can be as important as oil. So the compact that is in effect, obviously, needs to be renegotiated over time amongst the interested parties,” McCain said while on his way to the Aspen Institute. “I think that there’s a movement amongst the governors to try, if not, quote, renegotiate, certainly adjust to the new realities of high growth, of greater demands on a scarcer resource.”
Sen. Ken Salazar (D-CO) called the compact “sacrosanct,” adding that opening it up “would only happen over my dead body.” Senate candidate and former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer (R-CO) agreed, telling the Grand Junction Sentinel, “Over my cold, dead, political carcass.” The Denver Post editorialized that McCain “displayed a disturbing ignorance of the realities of the West’s scarce water resources.”
Now, one of McCain’s top surrogates, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is claiming that McCain didn’t mean what he said. Romney told 9News that McCain “has no interest in reopening the compact“:
“Senator McCain has no interest in reopening the compact,” Romney said. “Senator McCain believes as I do that a compact that’s been worked out between the governors and between the states is the right way to go. States are the ones who build these kinds of understandings. The federal government shouldn’t meddle in that compact.
Salazar’s Press Secretary Matt Lee-Ashley responded to Romney’s comments: “Either Senator McCain is so out of touch with Western water issues that he needs the former Massachusetts governor to defend him, or he really has some interest in overhauling the law of the river that has been in place since 1922. Both scenarios are troubling.”
ProgressNowAction has a petition telling McCain to keep his hands off Colorado’s water.
McCain does not speak for McCain

August 20th, 2008 at 5:10 pmThank you for clarifying what the candidate actually was supposed to say, gigi… don’t you hate when the robot’s script goes awry?
August 20th, 2008 at 5:11 pmVery soon we will see the McStain campaign roll out its own version of the “Pope Mobile” so that McStain can smile and wave but have no actual contact with the public.
It appears that that will be the only way they can keep their candidate on message. The message of the campaign, not of McStain.

August 20th, 2008 at 5:11 pmWait a minute. McCain’s campaign already told us that McCain doesn’t speak for the campaign. But, Romney isn’t part of the campaign, nor is he part of McCain. So, why is he allowed to point out how McCain doesn’t speak for McCain?
I’m so confused.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:13 pmGigi until you provide a link to a credible source, you’re a liar.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:13 pmMaybe Johnny Mac wants to divert that Colorado water away from the Coors people, seeing as how Cindy is in bed with Bud.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:13 pmThat’s funny, Gigi… I don’t see in your excerpt the following:
So the compact that is in effect, obviously, needs to be renegotiated over time amongst the interested parties,”
it’s shocking that the press could fabricate a quote like that when all McCain said was the innocuous quote you provided. Shame on them. Nothing in there about renegotiating at all.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:14 pmyou can tell gigi’s little post is made up becuase there is no “my friends” anywhere in there….
August 20th, 2008 at 5:14 pmSo, gigi, are you claiming that McStain didn’t say what he said?
“I don’t think there’s any doubt the major, major issue is water and can be as important as oil. So the compact that is in effect, obviously, needs to be renegotiated over time amongst the interested parties,” McCain said while on his way to the Aspen Institute. “I think that there’s a movement amongst the governors to try, if not, quote, renegotiate, certainly adjust to the new realities of high growth, of greater demands on a scarcer resource.”
Seems pretty clear what he said, but I’m sure you’ll be getting BONUS McCain Point(TM) this week!

___________________________________________________________
Apparently, Romney has been granted “hand up the puppet’s ass” privileges. Hmmm…veep short list?
Either that, or anybody is allowed to speak for McCain except McCain. Personally, I’d prefer McCain speak for himself. This way, we could all see whether he is presidential material or not.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:36 pmBut fascism IS liberal, right?
Jonah “Doughy Pantload” Goldberg says so.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:36 pmI thought McCain was from Arizona – where anyone fooling around with water rights is an idiot for trying.

August 20th, 2008 at 5:44 pmI really don’t know what “liberal” or “conservative” means.
There are several definitions of Fascism . . . capitalism plus murder is how Upton Sinclair defined it.
It will arise out of the chaos of the impending economic collapse. Populations readily give up their freedoms for security/order during chaotic periods. 9/11 was a staged event to create the conditions for such a confiscation of our rights. The Anthrax attacks were part of this. Its all a Karl Rove directed made for TV drama.
Obama was had picked by the Rockfeller (New World Order) – I like the man but nothing will change under his rule unless we demand it loudly. He will have few options. The dollar is in full collapse right not. Foreign governments bought Freddie and Fannie securities believing that they were backed by the US government. When they fail, and they will fail, and hundreds of billions of dollars are lost, the walk out of the dollar denominated world will turn to a full gallop.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:52 pmIf McCain can’t speak for himself how can he speak for this country.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:03 pmGiGi, Colorado doesn’t want to renegotiate for their water. What about that don’t you and McCrazy understand?
August 20th, 2008 at 6:21 pmOnce again, Gigi quotes something as “what McCain actually said”, and there’s no mention in there of renegotiating the compact.
Gigi has proven once again how dishonest TP is for totally fabricating a quote and reporting that MCCain suggested that the compact had to be renegotiated.
That is just beyond the pale, TP!
Obviously, this statement, So the compact that is in effect, obviously, needs to be renegotiated over time amongst the interested parties,” does not appear in the quote that Gigi assures us is “what McCain actually said”. So you guys should be ashamed of yourselves!
Isn’t that right, Gigi?

Water CAN BE as important as oil? He’s starting to sound like a treehugger!
August 20th, 2008 at 6:30 pmWow! St D, you have no problem with his infidelity, lack of moral character, divorcing his disabled wife who stood by him while he was in captivity? Just because he says, he’s saved, he’s forgiven? That would be a religious schtick, but his character flaws and temper make him a less than desirable candidate.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:37 pmAs are we.
It’s the way you define “sin” that is the sticking point.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:38 pmBut in all seriousness, Daryll, that’s a thoughtful, well stated post @#39.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:40 pmIt’s pretty telling about a presidential candidate when he would look good by not saying anything at all on a lot of these issues.
Daryll…”bring down the value of the dollar”? Bush attached 10 separate anchors to our financial woes and McCain wants to open up the bottom of the ocean to fry it with lava. I’m afraid the 99% of the rest of us can’t afford to have the accountants from “I, Fooled & You” cooking the books in the nation’s capitol for another four years.
Can you please be a real Christian and think about others before yourself? Jesus cries every time you put up a post!
August 20th, 2008 at 6:41 pmI’m betting that post #39 was not written by The Performance Artist Known as Daryll™, but by someone using his account.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:56 pmWhat’s wrong with what McCain said?
You know, that compact is 86 years old or so. Hell, back then, someone of those states had been very recently territories. The water should be distributed in the fairest way possible, which isn’t necessarily the way it was done in 1922 because conditions have changed. Maybe it should be tied to population. I don’t know. But Colorado can’t complain that “their” water is going to be taken away, because they don’t have a moral reason to have any more of it than they deserve. They’re like Iowa saying that they HAVE to be first in the primaries, because. It’s a stupid way of doing things.
August 20th, 2008 at 7:01 pm(For the record, and for clarification, NO, I do not support John McCain. But I do support fairness in all cases, including in politics and in water distribution. If McCain says something that makes sense, I will defend it; if water is being distributed unfairly, I will support its fair distribution.)
August 20th, 2008 at 7:04 pmA Reagan Republican wouldn’t start fuddling in state affairs like this. McCain is showing he’s more of a Bush Republican than ever being a Reagan Republican. Because a Bush Republican doesn’t give a care who gets taken down in the process of getting a notch up in the approval polls.

One of the reasons conditions have changed is that a whole bunch of people moved into the deserts of the Southwest and then demanded they get all the water they wanted, for shiny green lawns and swimming pools as well as unlimited drinking water.
What is “fair distribution” of water?
August 20th, 2008 at 7:22 pmLooks like gigi still won’t own up to the whole truth, nor will Darryl. Republicans have no morals.
August 20th, 2008 at 7:39 pmexactly (well, almost exactly) what I was gonna say. Why is he even talking about this? “I think the agreement has to reflect the realities of the situation, but I’m not going to get involved in it at all” is basically what he’s saying. he doesn’t really have any constructive criticism of the compact, and seems to be alone in calling for renegotiation (it doesn’t look like the story identifies anyone else who agrees with McThuseleh). my view: he decided to bloviate about that issue because it’s local and he figures Obama won’t have anything to say about it.
truth is, though, Obama would have had to learn about riparian rights, and perhaps more importantly, contract formation and enforceability, in law school. if it were a real issue (which it’s not, as McSame’s dismissal of any role in the contrived controversy (”contriv-ersy”?) for the federal government confirms), obama would already be out in front of it.
exactly the point mauro is missing. he assumes from what mccain said that the compact must somehow be unfair, just as Daryll assumes we all have the same definition of sin, but since we’re liberals, we just love sin. to a certain extent, the “fairness” of the agreement could arguably be irrelevant, since legally it’s the enforceability of the agreement that would be at issue, unless all the parties voluntarily agreed to renegotiate, which doesn’t appear to be likely. as mentioned, i don’t see anyone quoted as agreeing with mccain.
and let’s not forget, he cheated and then lied in church, on national television, and is still running ads and pushing memes that obama is the antichrist.
August 20th, 2008 at 8:05 pmoh, and as for gigi, his mistake was claiming that his original quote was what mccain *actually* said, versus what he said *in addition to* what was quoted, which, it turns out, was completely self-contradictory anyway, so there you have: mccain.
August 20th, 2008 at 9:41 pmWhat does McCain mean when he speaks? There’s always an excuse for McCain’s stupidity. Typical Republican bull crap. All they ever do is make excuses and blame others.
August 20th, 2008 at 11:15 pmAh, selective editing from gigi. That’s fun.
You’ve got it all wrong, this is what McCain ACTUALLY said:
“I would [...] damage the state of Colorado”
There. That’s better.

August 21st, 2008 at 12:00 amAnyone who tries to talk authoritatively about water issues, in the Western US, better know what the heck they are talking about. You a talking about a resource worth trillions of dollars. It also is a key issue with the environmental community and native Americans. It looks to me like a staffer (who does not have a clue), handed McCain (who knows even less) a talking point. They stepped in a big, smelly pile. Do I hear the trumpets blowing ‘retreat’?
August 21st, 2008 at 12:16 amThe original Colorado River Compact over-estimated the average flow of the river. Because of climate change, the lower basin states like Arizona are getting their allocations cut. Of course it needs to be re-negotiated, suggesting it is merely impolitic but not necessarily anti-environmental.

This is another example that the “old world jounalism of Murrow, Cronkite and Rather is dead and buried. In the case of the Time Magazine reporter Ms Tumulty, she seems to think the finding out the who, what, where, when and how have been replaced with a steno pad, which she records what ABC said in rebuttle to the complaint of Congressman Kucinich. There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC. She takes what is handed to her and repeats it vebatim and then calls that reporting. I call is stenography. Lida Sohbet sohbet sesli chat Gelinlik Modelleri
