In an effort to appease conservatives who are outraged over his consideration of a pro-choice running mate, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) called into Laura Ingraham’s radio show today. When Ingraham asked if there were “certain positions that are non-negotiable” for his vice presidential pick,” McCain refused to answer, claiming that it would send him down “a slippery slope.” Listen here:
But McCain has walked down that “slippery slope” before. In fact, when McCain raised the idea of a pro-choice running mate in an interview with the Weekly Standard last week, he seemingly ruled out any candidate who was “pro-gay rights.”
Daryll, what are your thoughts on this?
… Daryll…?
August 20th, 2008 at 4:30 pmIn fact, when McCain raised the idea of a pro-choice running mate in an interview with the Weekly Standard last week, he seemingly ruled out any candidate who was “pro-gay rights.”
And the entire GOP breathed a huge sigh of relief , with the addition of the last word , “rights” ; if it were just “gay” itself , the entire GOP would be ruled out immediately……….
August 20th, 2008 at 4:33 pmMcCain reserves the right to flip-flop at any time on any issue.
August 20th, 2008 at 4:37 pmI wonder what the Log Cabin Republicans think?…

Why in the hell are they republicans in the first place?
August 20th, 2008 at 4:51 pmOoooh, perfect thread for some Christian hate’n from Daryll…popcorn anyone?

August 20th, 2008 at 5:00 pmPeople who use walkers should avoid slippery slopes, cuz when they fall they can’t get up.

The Log Cabin Republicans support McCain, and this headline misrepresents McCain’s views.
Ambition clouds Mccain’s views. So do cataracts.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:02 pmHow are gay rights different from human rights? Are they called gay rights if the humans involved happen to be gay? Maybe what the Republicans are having trouble with is the notion that gays happen to be human.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:03 pmBuckie; I’ll take my popcorn with loads of extra butter, please. Not good for the cholesterol, but great for the palate.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:03 pmThis is a toughie for daryll, he either has to support gay rights or an admitted adulterer. Both are stoning offenses in his world.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:05 pmmyroro Says:
Maybe what the Republicans are having trouble with is the notion that gays happen to be human.
They also have a big problem with the notion that gays happen to be Americans.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:06 pmNot tough at for St. D.
Admitted adulterers who are Republics are A-OK in Daryll’s book.
Of course, they have to have “admitted their sin and begged forgiveness”, but how tough is that? Besides, Daryll accepts a wide range of statements as “begging forgiveness” — as long as they’re from Rs.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:08 pmWhat are McCain’s views?

So, McCain is pro-gay rights? Would McCain support a full federal legalization of gay marriage?
August 20th, 2008 at 5:16 pmWhat about baby killing? Didn’t McIIIrd do a shitload of that dropping bombs on civilians in Nam?
Oh, right, he’s saved and forgiven, never mucking find.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:20 pmGigi suggests that McSame would consider a running mate who was “pro-gay rights”.
He’d better hope the Christian Right doesn’t find out about that.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:20 pmand some of those babies weren’t even babies yet…
August 20th, 2008 at 5:21 pmThanks for that good_golly4. Is it safe to follow that McCain views industrial hemp and medical marijuana as state’s right issues as well? What about his views as to the moment at which human rights are legal in play? Where’s he at with that?
August 20th, 2008 at 5:23 pmgood_golly4 Says:
From this, one can assume that he would also be “perfectly comfortable” with a gay vice president.
Damn it gg, now you owe me a new keyboard!
August 20th, 2008 at 5:24 pmMe thinks our gal gigi didn’t hear McStain’s position du jour while hanging out at Saddleback on Saturday.
But then again, that was 5 days ago, so a lot’s changed since then!
PEACE

Thanks for the answer.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:32 pmGigi says McCain “has supported states’ rights to legalize gay marriage.”
And she accuses TP of distorting what McSame says!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAAA
August 20th, 2008 at 5:34 pmAccording to the Religious Reich Wing Nuts the Bible condemns the idea of gay rights. Their argument: If gay were good, God would have named the first pair Adam and Bruce.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:37 pmexactly how low must laura ingraham’s self esteem must be. sitting there chatting on her radio show with someone who thinks she’s a second class citizen, who should have ZERO right because she’s a big ole lesbian.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:42 pmI’m 69 so I can give McGrumpy some FREE advice. ‘Look, old man, pick Larry Craig for your VP. and pick up all gay voters?…do it do it do it….lololol.’
August 20th, 2008 at 5:44 pmI have an idea for a great bumper sticker.
McSame/Looserman
August 20th, 2008 at 5:46 pmI have A great idea for a bumper sticker
McSame/Looserman A similar one was good for them in 2000.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:48 pmMcIIIrd/Jerusalem Joe ‘08 (3008, that is)
August 20th, 2008 at 6:09 pmSo, can we surmise from this response that your candidate would not use federal resources to try to prosecute medical marijuana distributors in California as Bush has done?
How about assisted suicide providers in Oregon?
August 20th, 2008 at 6:28 pmThe individual rights of a gay person to associate with whom they choose and how and enter into the legal domestic partnership known as marriage should be the same as the individual rights of a straight person to do the same. There is no justification for “state’s rights” to trump individual rights.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:45 pmMeanwhile…
Flippy McSpin says: “My friends. I can’t exclude anyone from consideration for VP because the party, and my campaign advisers, haven’t told me what would cause a candidate to be excluded. But, there WILL be exclusions, my friends. There WILL be exclusions”.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:45 pmgood_golly4:
August 20th, 2008 at 6:46 pmWhat about the hemp and medicinal marijuana? Also I could use a better idea of McCain’s stance as to assisted suicide and death with dignity issues. Thanks again.
Damnit ralph!!!
August 20th, 2008 at 6:46 pmsorry, db. I stepped on your line. I need more rehearsal.
August 20th, 2008 at 6:48 pmNo no. My mistake. You had already nailed it…
August 20th, 2008 at 6:59 pmThe fact that McCain is even willing to allow discussion of a pro-choice candidate on the Rep. ticket indicates that he has completely abandoned the ideology he has claimed to hold. The reality is that a VP choice must absolutely be assumed to have a very good chance of either taking over the Presidency, or being elected President after 8 years (or 4?) in office. That McCain would basically say he is pro-life only until he’s no longer President pretty much sums up the Rep. party in general.
It’s not unlike a bunch of old guys basically deciding whether or not young women should have a say in their reproductive decisions. As far as I’m concerned, if you don’t have a working uterus, get out of the abortion discussion!
August 21st, 2008 at 12:13 amIf as the poet said; the child is the father of the man, and the man is the father of the child, then you’re your own grandpa and McCain is the one:
Admirable Old Salt was a seaman first class;

August 21st, 2008 at 3:26 am.
I’ve got a slippery slope McPerve can contemplate.
.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:27 amI wonder if Sen. McCain would have considered emancipation to be a “state right”? Would he have considered the right for women to vote to be a “state right”? Would he have considered civil rights to be a “state right”
Seems to me that Sen. McCain is afraid to tackle the tough issues . . . Snd here I thought the Republican party had a spine. I guess only on certain issues like corporate welfare, whoring himself out to big oil, and appeasing his homophobic base are the only times in which he “grows a spine”.
