Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH) reportedly suffered an aneurysm last night “and is not expected to recover, according to CBS affiliate WOIO in Cleveland.” Jones is on life support in a Cleveland hospital, though her office did not confirm this fact. Jones was elected in 1998, becoming the first black woman to represent Ohio.
My thoughts are with her and her family and I thank her for her service to Ohio and to our country.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:32 pmupside, you took the words out of my keyboard.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:33 pmWhat a shame. She is a very good woman.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:33 pmWow. This is really sad..However, don’t give up hope..A friend of mine went through the same thing about 4 months ago, wasn’t expected to survive and is now alive, well and back to work. Perhaps another miracle is in order.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:34 pmLets hope she does recover despite the diagnosis. My condolences to her family.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:36 pmMy condolences to the Tubbs family and her district.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:37 pmOhioans didn’t elect a black person until 1998?? LMAO! What a lame state.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:37 pmI know she’d rather be full of energy and moving around during this historic election season. Very saddening, but you can only fear the worst when you read the words ‘life support.’
August 20th, 2008 at 1:37 pmI live in her district and have always admired her as a dedicated public servant. I still remember an inspiring talk she gave before my law school class. I hope and pray for her recovery.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:38 pmDAMMIT DAMMIT DAMMIT
I adore this woman ; the guts she had when she objected to the counting of Ohio’s 20 electoral votes during a Housesession is one of the most patriotic and honest things I have ever witnessed………
August 20th, 2008 at 1:39 pm.
Thoughts and prayers to Ms. Tubbs Jones and family.
.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:40 pmThis is so sad. She is in my prayers. I loved watching her during the Ohio Democratic primary. She is a gutsy lady.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:47 pmThis is very sad indeed. I certainly hope she survives. My condolences to her family.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:50 pmOur thoughts go out to her and her family for a turnaround and full recovery.
August 20th, 2008 at 1:52 pmeven sadder…
Stephanie Tubbs Jones has died, sources say
Posted by Plain Dealer staff August 20, 2008 13:00PM
U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in Congress, has died after suffering a brain aneurysm, said sources familiar with the situation.
She was removed from life support at 12:19 p.m. at Huron Road Hospital, the sources said.

August 20th, 2008 at 2:06 pmShe will be missed and fondly remembered.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:12 pmHer family must be in a lot of emotional pain right now. I hope they can get through this.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:27 pmRep. Jones will be missed by her family, her constituents, and her nation.
Lest we forget, Stephanie Tubbs Jones formally challenged the Ohio vote in 2004, the vote that gave George W. Bush a second term.
Unlike 2000, when no Senators signed on the challenge Florida’s results, in 2004 Barbara Boxer had the courage to follow suit in the Senate.
We can scarcely afford to lose any Congresspeople of character, and Stephanie Tubbs Jones was certainly one.
It is a sad day.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:27 pmThe latest word is that Tubbs Jones is still alive and in critical condition, reports of her death were premature.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:35 pmMy sympathies to her family and friends.
But…
Jones was elected in 1998, becoming the first black woman to represent Ohio.
You have got to be kidding me….I did not know Ohio was this regressed.
Guess I will just stay here in Seattle, a very liberal, progressive city….Republicans are not well liked here, you don’t dare put a Bush bumbersticker on your car here, you will get flipped off and egged constantly.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:36 pmBashing Ohio isn’t really relevant. Tubbs Jones’ district, in Cuyahoga County, is predominantly and strongly Democratic. To generalize about an entire state is rather misleading.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:43 pmOhio is a red state aside from Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) and some surrounding areas.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:55 pmDennis Kucinich is a rep here and she was too. She replaced Louis Stokes, also African American, who held his seat for 30 years.
So rip the rest of Ohio, but Ohio technically elected their first black us congressman 40 years ago.
WTF is going on here? I have CQ saying she’s dead, then alive. Politico the same. And on…
Is this just a redic slow day for MSM or what because this type of thing should not be going on.
Prayers to Congresswoman Tubbs Family and Prayers for our god awful media to fix their shit.
August 20th, 2008 at 2:55 pmThis is sad news for Ohio and for our country. It’s particularly tragic that it happened to someone with such a great sense of humor. My prayers are with Judge Tubbs and her family.

****
Not to mention first black mayor of a major city, Carl Stokes, elected mayor of Cleveland in 1967.
And by the way, was it the newly downsized local newspaper that falsely reported Rep. Tubbs Jones’ death???
August 20th, 2008 at 3:07 pmleonine, it’s a better question to ask who didn’t report her death?
cleveland.com reported it, and now shows she’s in critical condition.

I am calling you out on this one, Buckie Boy. It’s just too easy to Google your lame assertion into thin air. By your standard, a state that has not elected a women of color to Congress any sooner is “regressed”, making Maryland’s Donna Edwards (who was elected this year!) a representative of Neadrathals?
Or how about your precious Washington State? Not one woman of color from Washington State has EVER been elected to serve in our nation’s capital – not Senate or House. What are you, then?(Check out this link for details on the history of states representatives.)
Nice liberal island you have there. (And in a whiff of logic and research, the Buckie evaporates into thin air.)
Please give credit to all our fine representatives where credit is due. And get off your high horse.

Rep. Tubbs Jones In Critical Condition
UPDATE 2:40 PM: The Cleveland Plain-Dealer, which had also reported that Tubbs Jones had died, now says she is in critical condition and that “reports shortly after noon had reported her death, but those were denied at a 2:30 p.m. news conference.” The Associated Press reported minutes ago that Tubbs Jones had died, according to a Democratic official, and then retracted that report. Capitol Briefing sincerely apologizes for the confusion and will continue to update.
There will be a prayer vigil for Tubbs Jones at 5 p.m. EST in the Cannon Caucus Room on Capitol Hill, according to her office.

Before you claim to be comparing apples to apples, realize that Ohio has about three times the percentage of black residents as Washington State. Just saying.

OK…
I just pointed out the facts. You seem so proud of your progessiveness, but missed a key point to your argument.
Just sayin’…
August 20th, 2008 at 4:17 pmMy prayers go out to her family.
August 20th, 2008 at 4:23 pmDid you happen to catch that key point of misshusseinmolly’s argument?
I hope so.

Yes, I did.
Going back to Buckie…Only fourteen states (plus the D of C) have elected women of color to Congress. I was taking to task how odd it was to label another state as “regressed” for making strides while failing to review the history as a whole. States with much greater percentages than Ohio have yet to reach as high – DE, NJ, SC, TN, LA, MS, et al.
Admittedly, in my ineloquence, I failed in attempting to make that point earlier. Mea Culpa.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:23 pmSo sad. I had the pleasure of playing for a private party she threw several years ago, when I was living in Cleveland, and she was as gracious a host to us lowly jazz musicians, as she was to her guests. A really nice person and a good progressive.

August 20th, 2008 at 7:11 pmMy heartfelt condolences go out to her family first and foremost, but also to her friends, her colleagues, and her constituents. What a tragic loss for all of them, and for all of us.
August 20th, 2008 at 8:03 pmA great loss.
My condolences to her family.
August 20th, 2008 at 8:12 pmTalk about the right stuff…she will be missed. Condolences from all of us in Washington State.
