Judge rejects Sen. Stevens’s bid to move trial to Alaska.

U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan today ruled that Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) will stand trial on seven felony counts in the nation’s capital, rejecting his request to move the affair to Alaska. Jury selection for the four-week trial is set to begin on Sept. 22. Federal prosecutors argued that “holding the trial in a place where Stevens is already campaigning for reelection could taint the home state jury pool.” Indeed, Stevens’s lawyers said that the senator wanted to “campaign in the evenings and on weekends during the trial.”

…but…but…but…Stevens WANTS a tainted jury pool. It’s his only chance!

I’m sure Saddam Hussein would have preferred to have had his trial in Tikrit, too.

  2. Badmoodman says:

Maybe Sen. Stevens can drill offshore for some prospective jurors. After all, they will yield immediate results.

  3. whirlaway says:

Whatever happens, let Stevens continue to be in the running for the November elections. He is going to be an asset for the Democratic… er Republican Party! ;-)

  4. Uncle Ho says:

    Nope.
    uh-uh.
    No campaigning at night.
    Do not pass go.
    Go directly to jail.

He’ll still have all his oil company cronies to shuttle his wattle back and forth from the trial to Alaska, no problemo.

  6. RUCerious says:

gigi, I read the Times Picayune article you linked to, and nowhere does it mention where the trial is being held. The byline is D.C….?

  7. Shayne says:

Stevens is even older than Grampy McSame and he is unable to campaign on evenings and weekends. Is McCain lying about his age too?

  8. Shayne says:

RUC, GiGi has been rewriting history and speeches all day.

It seems a bit inconsistent when William Jefferson’s trial is slated for his home state. After several delays, the trial of the Louisiana Democrat is finally set to start December 2.

I wish they could start it sooner and get it over with. He needs to start doing time now. He broke the law, plain and simple, and I’ve never seen a democrat or any of the commenters on this site try to defend him. Once we get his trial done, and he is locked up, maybe we can get started on the numerous republicans who have been investigated, indicted, etc.

    good_golly4 Says:

I stand corrected. The trial of William Jefferson will be in Alexandria, Virginia. No home town trial for either Jefferson or Stevens.

Perhaps instead of “I stand corrected” it would be more accurate of Gigi to admit “I pulled this out of my ass”.

But then, I guess if everyone assumed it anyway, it’s not news, is it? At least Gigi standing corrected is remarkable in some ways.

  11. SP Biloxi says:

    Bummer for Uncle Ted.

  12. Chris L says:

Anyone know when Rep. Renzi (R-AZ) is supposed to have his trial? He has already been indicted on 5 charges last February. I can’t find info on when his trial is supposed to start.

Also, I have to wonder if Sen. Stevens trial will tie into Rep Young (R-AK) who is already under federal investigation?

Most trolls are adept at providing links which are irrelevant, contradictory, or flat out debunk whatever point they are trying to make. Gigi, on the other hand, has raised it to an art form.

  14. dixie blood says:

RePugniScumBag Ted Stevens(AK) has been insisting on a speedy trial…now he’s pulling delaying tactics…what a lying scumbag!

  15. Left Coast Mike says:

Let’s not forget the Bug Man…Delay is waiting trial in Texas.

  16. questioneverything says:

If I was indicted on 7 counts, I’d be in jail. The Senator is already getting preferential treatment.

And when, exactly, will Delay be going to court?

  17. KYJurisDoctor says:

Senator: you can’t pick your friendly Alaska jury for this one.

    Sorry. OsiSpeaks.com
