Max-1, You stated the truth there!

I was luckier in that when I came out to my family, they didn't drive me away. It took a while for them to realize that I was still the exact same person who I've always been, but they've been there for me when I've needed them and I've been there for them. Our family is Southern Baptist so we all had a great deal of mis-information and lies about gay people to overcome!

It wasn't easy to tell them about me, but their biggest worry was that I would be treated as a second class citizen, physically attacked/killed for being who I am, or not be able to find a partner or gainful employment. I thank God that their fears have never been realized, but that's because I stood up for myself when I could and didn't take crap from the know-nothing crowd.

I'll keep you in my prayers that your family learns to let go of their misplaced hate and blame.

.

Dear Trippy and all trolls(o.k.Daryll too),

When I was 22 I met Robert. He was Air Force. We dated for three months then he was shipped abroad for 13 months. We communicated regularly through the USPS, you know letters, pictures and cassette tapes. A few phone calls from the Middle East, we decided to visit each other on his 30 day leave, so he came to visit me. Not his mom, but me. I was flattered to say the least. Upon his departure we decided to revisit this adventure upon the end of his tour, should he be relocated back State side.

Unbeknownced to me, when he arrived back in the Middle East, he put in for a discharge. He wrote me a nice long letter to announce to me that he was going to be discharged in mid winter and asked me to meet him, his mother and grand mother back east. I accepted.

However, there remained one problem, I was a member of a staunch Republican family that was too proud to think that being gay was acceptable. I had been out to myself for several years. So I pondered this next step. I put in for a two week vacation at work, yet no one knew at work knew where or why I was going. I. JUST. LEFT... knowing that upon my return I would have a lot to explain --- where I went and why.

The day after my return my father and mother called me up and began their investigation... WHERE DID YOU GO? WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL US? etc. I had a choice at that moment; do I lie or tell the truth. So I spoke and told them the truth.

From that day my life has never been the same. Honesty, with those I cherished the most in my life, with those I trusted the most in my life, with those I loved most in my life, handed me a life of abandonment.

For over five years my parents, one of two brothers and sister did not speak to me. When I did approach them, they inquired when "<em>I</em>" was going to change to make them happy. It was extremely selfish of them to insist that "<em>I</em>" entertain making them happy and forsake my own, especially in the light of them not sacrificing of themselves in the process. It got so bad that when my parents came from across the state to visit my sister just miles away, a THIRTY MINUTE DIVE AWAY, no less, that no one called to ask me if I wanted to visit. I knew, after years of this, I was officially dead to them... My life had changed because they chose inflexibility due to bias and bigotry.

<strong>Twenty years later</strong>, I still struggle in calling my father and sister. They continually blame me for how I react to them. My mother died this last January and to this day, my sister blames me for being absent... not realizing it was they who drove me away. I was, however, blessed enough to be alerted so that I could go visit her on her death bed and pray for forgiveness and strength to continue to learn forgiveness of my father and siblings. To date, none of my family ever meet Robert, asked to, or cares...

Sorry for the long story and I seek no sympathies. I just felt compelled to share what I did not choose to happen to me in hopes that the trolls can gleam some insight to what they condemn of others.

<blockquote>deebaser:
All things being equal, would you prefer to date a version 1.0 man/woman?

It would depend on a lot of things. I would say I’d be more inclined to be attracted to a “natural” woman, but that’s just my preference. It has nothing to do with hiring someone for a job that by all reasonable measure would be considered non-sexual in nature - it’s the Library of Congress!

I don’t know exactly what your argument is, or how it relates to discrimination in the workplace.</blockquote>

As I previously stated I really don't want to touch the hiring with a ten foot pole. (no pun intended.) People were slagging down a regular poster (DieNow) for expressing a different opinion.

The fact that you'd prefer a 'natural' woman to a transgender betrays a bit of 'prejudice' on your part, no? You recognize on at least a subconcious level that sexually reassigned folks are not really what they're advertising. Such a 'woman' that stops taking the estrogen will get a 5 O'Clock shadow.

<blockquote>Here’s a hypothetical for you, if your car broke down out in the sticks, and there were two mechanics nearby - one transgender and competent, and the other, some “normal” man/woman who didn’t know what they were doing. Who would you rather have service your car?</blockquote>

The person who knew what they were doing, obviously. I don't want to get into the hiring thing.

The enamor of TP's resident commenters in response to the trolls tells me one thing: A progressive learns as if they were intending to teach, regardless of whether they actually take that path. That means, lifelong learning.

The regressive stops learning after high school, blasts all forms of higher education, and sticks to a very narrow package of knowledge to see them through life. No effort to update themselves. According to them, the extent of tolerance when you're 50 should be the same from when you were 16.

that's okay, dbadass... ralph is actually quite tolerant of those left-handed deviants, despite their claims that "it's not a choice". ralph knows better, because he didn't choose to be right-handed, it's just the default position of humanity.

"Transvestites, transgenders, whatever, they’re all deviant weirdos to me."
-- I think that statement pretty much says it all about you. No further comment from me is necessary.

"Additionally, you cannot prove that homosexuality is something you are born with, so don’t give me your nonsense. Its a choice."
-- HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! A simple declarative from you is some sort of proof???

"I know identical twins where one decided to be gay and the other remains straight. Its clearly a choice, one which comes with significant consequences to the chooser’s family and friends."
-- One "decided" to be gay? The other "remains" straight? So being straight is how we are born, and if someone is gay, it's because they renounced their natural default and "chose" a lifestyle where they would be ridiculed, discriminated against, disowned by their families, and generally have to hide who they are? What in the world is so attractive about such a lifestyle that it would incite so many people to make that "choice"? The hope that it might enhance interior decorating ability and fashion sense? That reverberating sound you hear is about a gazillion gay men and women laughing their heads off at your ignorance.

<blockquote>TripleKick 11 Says:
ralph,
Gays make a choice to deviate and live as a homosexual. There is no choice made to be hetro because its the default natural state. Honestly, this stuff isn’t that difficult. Let me ask you, do you believe lindsay lohan was born gay?</blockquote>

Bad logic.

If one must choose one's sexuality, then that must apply to a heterosexual as well as a homosexual.

I agree with you, though, it's not that difficult. It's pretty simple. Either it's a choice, or it's not. If it's a choice, as you suggest, then you must know this because you chose to be straight. If it's not, then gays did not choose to be gay.

My personal experience was that I was not in control of who I was attracted to. They were invariably of the opposite sex, so I assume that gay people had no control over their attractions either. And the gay people I know have confirmed this.

I have no personal knowledge of the sexuality or intimate life of Lindsay Lohan, so I'm afraid I can't offer a useful opinion on that.

<em>TripleKick 11 Says:

Tweedster, a transgender mechanic in the sticks? Wow you’re reaching there.

Most transgender’s I’ve seen are working at Kinkos. No pun intended.</em>

One, it's a hypothetical.

Two, I wasn't aware that you kept such close tabs on the employment trends of the transgender community.

Three, how would it be inconceivable that a Woman-to-Man transgender woulfn't want to be a gear-head? Can a "natural" woman be a mechanic? Does that blow your views of gender roles out of the water?

Why are you obsessed with homosexuality? Are you advocating that the "choice" (Devil's advocate here) to be gay should be outlawed? Why are you against personal freedom?

<blockquote>bitblt Says:

bit is hesitant here to remark on the science since there have been so many studies made by people with agendas to prove.</blockquote>

Would that bit had been so hesitant to remark that he would have failed entirely to do so.

<blockquote>In addition it seems to bit that following this path will be a step short of declaring that there is no free will. That is, people are simply what the chemicals in their bodies make them.</blockquote>

bit seems to be suggesting that, as MIchael Savage suggests, there is no psychological condition that is not a choice. Perhaps bit thinks that the chemicals in our bodies, hormones in various concentrations and what not, are matters of choice as well? Or perhaps that they have no more influence on our behaviors than our choice of clothing?

Bit, it seems to ralph, is extending the requirements for "free will" far beyond the limits that ralph would place them.

ralph thinks it is just a travesty the people are allowed to write or cut their food with their left hands. After all, it is a matter of choice, is it not? And ralph is tired of sitting to the left of one of these deviants and having his elbow bumped by a pervert who eats with his left hand. It's a moral outrage!

<em>deebaser:
All things being equal, would you prefer to date a version 1.0 man/woman?</em>

It would depend on a lot of things. I would say I'd be more inclined to be attracted to a "natural" woman, but that's just my preference. It has nothing to do with hiring someone for a job that by all reasonable measure would be considered non-sexual in nature - it's the Library of Congress!

I don't know exactly what your argument is, or how it relates to discrimination in the workplace.

Here's a hypothetical for you, if your car broke down out in the sticks, and there were two mechanics nearby - one transgender and competent, and the other, some "normal" man/woman who didn't know what they were doing. Who would you rather have service your car?

<blockquote>TripleKick 11 Says:
Missmolly
Transvestites, transgenders, whatever, they’re all deviant weirdos to me.</blockquote>

Thanks for amply demonstrating your lack of interest in accuracy or fact. Not that any further evidence was required...

<blockquote>Additionally, you cannot prove that homosexuality is something you are born with, so don’t give me your nonsense. Its a choice. I know identical twins where one decided to be gay and the other remains straight. Its clearly a choice, one which comes with significant consequences to the chooser’s family and friends.</blockquote>

So then answer missmolly's question:

when did you choose to be heterosexual? Can you remember the moment? Did you make a pro/con list?

<em>republicans hate facts Says:
</em>
bitblt Says:
Why don’t you start by naming one person whose sexuality TripleKick has judged. Don’t you need to show that someone has suffer loss before you have a case.
Besides, don’t people judge important characteristics of other people all the time.
What citizen is not able to say which sexual expression benefits both the practitioners and the society?
<em>
He judged ALL transgenders as ‘wackos’, something that is both fundamentally TARDED, and PSYCHO - much like YOURSELF - Jake.

Judge? Perhaps YOU DO, but then YOU are an ESTABLISHED BIGOT. Bigotry being COMMON among YOUR FOLK don’t make it RIGHT, it makes it SAD and YOU PATHETIC!

dbadass Says:
TripleKick11:
Will you or will you not tackle the fundamnetal question of gender identity? Since you seem a little intimidated maybe we should start with you explaining how you have come to have the attitdues you have presented and what their foundations are…
Feel free to jump in bitblt…
August 20th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Believe you and bit have been through this a time or two before without …it seems to bit…any definitive or lasting conclusions.

If bit recalls correctly, the information related by dbadass is usually short of declaring an observed situation “causal.” Seems that most of what you relate is that some observations suggest, or strongly suggest, certain outcomes.

This means that there is no “gay test.” It remains a “self describe” condition. bit takes it that there are no test of the condition claimed by the person who is the subject of this TP post.

Ok.

Even the American Psychological Association in their brochure on homosexuality stops short of declaring that this behavior has a physical, biological origin.

bit is hesitant here to remark on the science since there have been so many studies made by people with agendas to prove.

In addition it seems to bit that following this path will be a step short of declaring that there is no free will. That is, people are simply what the chemicals in their bodies make them.

No free will. No responsibility. bit doesn’t think less responsibility is what is needed.
