Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) campaign has long pushed lofty rhetoric claiming McCain will “stand up” to oil companies (despite the fact that he is offering $4 billion in tax cuts to Big Oil). In an interview on Fox Business channel Tuesday, McCain economic spokesperson Taylor Griffin claimed McCain favors repealing the tax giveaways to Big Oil from the 2005 energy bill:
Q: I’m just saying is he for taking away the tax breaks for big oil?
GRIFFIN: Yes!
Q: He is for that?
GRIFFIN: Yes. The tax breaks in the 2005 energy bill, Senator McCain believes they should be repealed, yes.
Watch it:
Griffin’s statement may anger McCain’s anti-tax base again because it suggests McCain is supporting raising taxes on oil companies. “In McCain’s mind, the removal of the tax provision — a manufacturing tax credit — is tantamount to a tax hike,” Marc Ambinder explained.
For example, McCain won’t support the “Gang of 10” energy compromise, which would roll back $13 billion in oil company tax breaks, because “he cannot and will not support legislation that raises taxes,” according to a spokesperson.
Furthermore, McCain has rejected efforts to repeal the 2005 tax breaks. In 2007, McCain failed to vote on a motion to invoke cloture on the Energy Independence and Security Act, which would have ended $13 billion in Big Oil tax breaks. A “spokesperson said that he would not have supported breaking the filibuster,” Forbes reported.
So, does McCain — who rails against rolling back Bush’s tax cuts and has pledged “no new taxes” — support a tax hike?
Insane McCain has flipped and flopped so much he is disoriented
August 21st, 2008 at 3:43 pmI say ………………..like hell he would.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:43 pmRemember, McCain does NOT speak for McCain.
But the McCain campaign does speak for McCain.
Or does it?
This is getting pretty damn peculiar.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:44 pmyeah, it’ll anger average Joe Republican that there might be a tax increase on Big Oil…
It is astounding how much people vote against their economic interests in this country, but when TEH GAYS will brainwash your children and liberals are going to persecute Christianity I guess it’s no big surprise…
August 21st, 2008 at 3:46 pmI smell another flip flop coming….
August 21st, 2008 at 3:47 pmWow! “McSame campaign in total disarray!” Of course, you won’t see that headline in the corporate media :-)
They are so groggy that they don’t even know whether they are coming or going! LOL
August 21st, 2008 at 3:48 pmSo this means McCain was against increasing taxes on oil companies before he was for it?
Or, was he for a tax increase before he was against it?
Then McCain reversed himself again?
And another flip-flop
After he flop-flip.
This is getting really confusing.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pmThis is like watching a tennis match between superman and the flash.
The ball is going back and forth so fast, it’s just a blur…
Neck, hurting….
August 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pmSo, does McCain — who rails against rolling back Bush’s tax cuts and has pledged “no new taxes” — support a tax hike?
Well, it should be clear by now that McCain doesn’t speak for the McCain Campaign. And McCain doesn’t let anyone else speak for McCain, even that guy named John McCain that keeps disagreeing with him in those YouTubes.
Glad I could straighten all this out.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:49 pmI still love McCrazy’s tough talk about Bin Laden at the Saddleback farce.
McCain: I will follow Bin Laden to the gates of hell to capture him.
Obviously the gates of hell aren’t in Pakistan because a week or so ago McCain when asked if he were president and had Bin Ladens location pinned down in Pakistan, would he go in to get him, McCain replied that we have to be careful because Pakistan is a sovereign nation and we cannot invade Sovereign nations.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:50 pmThis is a non-issue. You raise taxes, of any kind, on the oil companies and guess where they’ll make it up? You got it, your wallet.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:52 pmJohn McCain, the man whose had the life long AMBITION to become president will say or do anything to get elected, whether it’s pushing his Georgian President friend into provoking a conflict with Russia or following Satan to the gates of hell, to personally deliver his soul…
August 21st, 2008 at 3:53 pmMcCain: I will follow Bin Laden to the gates of hell to capture him.
– - Btw, if you’ve had to go all the way to the gates of hell, wouldn’t the bin Laden problem pretty much be solved? And wouldn’t McCain have a different problem of his own?
August 21st, 2008 at 3:54 pmNo Badmoodman it is an issue, the issue of flip flopping again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again…
Face it, both candidates are going to end up raising our taxes, how else does America expect to pay for Bush’s failed wars? It’s just a matter of which candidate is going to make the wealthy start paying their fair share of the bill.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:57 pmThe oil companies will just raise the price of oil to the tune of exactly…..
…..you guessed it….
….13 billion dollars….
Americans think corporations are loyal to the country that made them, which just shows how gullible we are…or at least most of us are.
August 21st, 2008 at 3:58 pmIf McSame doesn’t say anything you like, wait a minute – he’ll get to you.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:00 pmBuckie Boy…I need to correct your last comment
Republicans think corporations are loyal to the country that made them, which just shows how gullible they are…or at least most of them are.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:01 pm“The tax breaks in the 2005 energy bill, Senator McCain believes they should be repealed, yes.”
One must read this statement very carefully and not extrapolate on what McYoYo BELIEVES as what McYoYo will DO. He will believe to his dying day (next week?) that the tax breaks should be repealed as he runs to the escrow company to pay cash provided by big oil to his “champagne fund” for his next luxury home.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:03 pmGRIFFIN: Yes. The tax breaks in the 2005 energy bill, Senator McCain believes they should be repealed, yes.
Griffin went on to say, “However, believing something and actually doing something about it are two different things.”
August 21st, 2008 at 4:10 pmFLIP, FLOP! FLIP, FLOP!! FLIP, FLOP!!!
I guess all those folks who brandished sandals-on-a-stick at the 2004 GOP convention will be able to pull those things out of the closet again. Oh, and I hope that they wear their “Purple Heart Band-Aids” again…
August 21st, 2008 at 4:10 pmMcCain can obviously express completely opposite opinions on any issue, lie and talk utter rubbish ad infinitum without fear of challenge by the MSM because they just can’t get enough of his donuts and char-grilled hamburgers.
Rationality, democracy and the fate the nation are beging traded for nothing more than a few McCain “Happy Meals”.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:21 pmMcCain was against flipping before he flopped.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:24 pmThe bill “included several oil and gas tax incentives, providing about $2.6 billion of tax cuts for the oil and gas industry,” it also “provided for $2.9 billion of tax increases on the oil and gas industry, for a net tax increase on the industry of nearly $300 million over 11 years”:
A hit of $300 mil. could be absorbed in one day. So, big repeal Sen. McCain.

Not if it is a windfall profits tax.

August 21st, 2008 at 4:30 pmi wonder if grampy mclame will give back all the money big oil gave him for his campaign for his support of offshore drilling now that he’s made this announcement.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:30 pmi always find it interesting how waahhhpublican assclowns like neetles scream polls aren’t important when they reveal something they don’t want to see (for example bush’s laughable approval rating) yet, would bet their mother’s lives on polls when it tells them something they want to believe.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:33 pmI predict that as soon as the right-wing brays about McCain flip-flopping on taxes, we will hear a statement that says Taylor Griffin doesn’t speak for the McCain campaign.
Which means that if McCain doesn’t speak for the McCain campaign, and the McCain spokespeople don’t speak for the McCain campaign, who’s left?
August 21st, 2008 at 4:35 pmWe need to stop thinking this is a big deal. This was a well planted and orchestrated interview by Fox. McCain campaign was throwing herring out there to chase until it’s revealed that it amounts to a drop in the drum. Overall that tax over 11 years is just $300 mil.

9 point lead Memorial Wknd. Down to a 5 point lead by the end of July, now down to a measly 3 points going into the conventions. PANIC IN DENVER !!!!!
Looks like Barack will have to put his nemesis Hillary on the ticket just to stop the bleeding.
August 21st, 2008 at 4:28 pm
And that’s somehow “worse” than a McDepends/LIEberman crusty old moron ticket ?
Good luck selling that , turdburglar………….
August 21st, 2008 at 4:51 pmBozo The Neoclown Says: “…polls aren’t important when they reveal something they don’t want to see (for example bush’s laughable approval rating) yet, would bet their mother’s lives on polls when it tells them something they want to believe.”
And that my friend is why the polls should NEVER be believed. Have you ever been polled? Not I! The poll companies are not, repeat not, charitable organizations. They do not make donations; They sell a product. How many polls would they sell if they insisted that Obama was ahead by 30%? The Dems would have no need to do business with them as so the Repukes. Hence, the polls never differ by much and always add to the “Suspense” by changing from poll to poll. I do not recall the sample size required for statistical accuracy with a population as great as our voter base but I am sure it is well over a few hundred selected pollees. The fact that the people polls are selected, whether it be by the fact they have a telephone, what party the are registered in, or what is the color of their eyes, immediately skews the polls. The polls must be random and the criteria fixed and measurable. Any poll that depends upon an individual TRUTHFULLY answering a question is only good for that exact time the question was asked and answered. All the questions must be asked at the same time by the same person in exactly the same tone of voice—impossible.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:05 pmFlippy seems determined to piss off all the various subgroups of the 20% crowd. At this rate it’s quite possible that the GOP base will fracture. And the psychochristians might stay home, on election day, to pray for the Rapture.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:08 pmGeez, TP, didn’t you get the memo from the spokespeople of the McCain campaign. They’re on the record saying that John McCain does not speak for his own campaign. So, why should we believe or trust anything he says if he doesn’t know what he’s saying? Or, rather if he doesn’t speak for his own campaign?
August 21st, 2008 at 5:09 pmHere’s an interesting poll.

August 21st, 2008 at 5:26 pmSomeone should tell the old man what the Greedy Oil Party wants him to lie about today.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:40 pmTo classify this as a flip flop would be wrong.
I think it just a good, old-fashioned lie.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:14 pmCame across this in while looking at stuff related to the Green River Formation in the US West and a recent Investors Business Daily opinion piece on the future of shale oil production
