McCain: ‘I don’t have to show I’m different from Bush.’

In a new interview with Politico, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said, “I don’t have any need to show that I’m different than President Bush.” Though McCain drew “implicit contrasts” with the president during the interview, “he declined to outwardly criticize Bush and flatly stated that he wouldn’t do anything as president to underscore his difference with the unpopular incumbent.” According to a new CBS/NYT poll, 47 percent of voters believe that McCain will continue Bush administration policies — an increase from 43 percent in May.

Digg It!

  6. MCMetal says:

Speaking to Politico just after finishing a town hall meeting, the Arizona senator vowed closer relations with Congress, a more open dialogue with the American people and a commitment to address some of the thorniest issues facing the country.

“First thing I’d do [as president] is to go to see the speaker of the House and the majority leader of the Senate — I assume that that would be Sen. Reid, I hope not, but I think that’s probably the reality of this election — and I would say, ‘Let’s have an agenda, let’s work together.’”

And the way to have a closer working relationship with Congress is to utter a partisan remark like the one above ?

Christ , no wonder this senile old fool isn’t worried about showing he’s different from Chimpy ; aside from the plain fact that he isn’t , he’s the same type of arrogant moron the Chimperor-In-Chief is …………

OK, of the 53% who say they don’t think McSame will be King Bush III, nearly half of them are Bush’s deadenders who think they are being cute by lying. The rest just need to pay more attention.

  15. Patty says:

Even his whole attitude behind the “I don’t need to show I’m any different from Bush” mirrors the current president’s arrogant-without-basis swagger.

Despite the close polls, I’m trusting that Sen. Obama’s proven campaign wisdom will continue — that he has the big picture and that with the VP announcement and the convention, momentum — and truth — will show the stark differences between Sen. Obama and Sen. “I don’t have to do anything you tell me to” McCain.

  29. gummitch says:

I’m pleased to hear that the Democrats are taken this approach, reminding people that McCain will essentially continue the legacy of mismanagement of the Bushies. They need to do more of it, which is something that Pew Research has stressed recently.

McCain can point to a tiny list of disagreements with Bush, but how can he run away from his voting record? (This is when he was actually showing up in the Senate, obviously.)

McCain’s overall Senate voting record lends support to the Democrats’ case.

On legislation on which the president had a clear position, McCain voted with Bush 90 percent of the time from the day Bush took office in 2001 to when Congress left for its August 2008 recess, according to a study by Congressional Quarterly. For 2007, he voted with the president 95 percent of the time.

What I’ve seen to date, though, echoes this:

“I don’t think the Obama campaign has done a particularly good job of linking McCain to George Bush,” said Democratic pollster Doug Schoen, who has worked for former President Clinton and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and is unaffiliated with the Obama campaign. “I think Obama has not delivered the message with the degree of focus and repetition he needs to be successful in a presidential campaign.”

It needs to be pounded home to the American public, and I can only hope that Obama will do this during the debates and that whoever he selects for VP will step in and deliver the message over and over.

Obama’s faith-based funding will be based upon charity work/disaster relief efforts (like Katrina) ; not abstinence programs.

When and where has Chimpy poured more troops into Afghanistan ?

Obama doesn’t claim to speak to “God”…………..

Democrats had sought unsuccessfully to attach a timetable for withdrawing troops. After that language was removed, Obama and several other senators decided to vote against the measure, saying they could not rubber-stamp an open-ended occupation. So , you’re incorrect there , too.

Obama hasn’t given any definite/specific agenda on drilling ; as any intelligent man (and one of the 2 running for the Oval Office) , he isn’t committing to anything regarding drilling or not drilling.

Finally, according to hte same poll, 71% of registered voters rate the financial situation in their households as either “very good” or “fairly good.”

And, it should also be noted that as with most polls, the pollsters included nearly 15% more Democrats than Republicans. 361 to 316.

  37. misshusseinmolly says:

McCain doesn’t believe he needs to differentiate himself from Bush, even though an overwhelming majority of the country disapproves of the job Bush has done and believes our country is on the wrong track.

    Why?

It’s simple, really. McCain knows that the press will continue to paint him as a “maverick” (as long as he continues to barbecue for them), and he also knows that Rove and his merry band of dirty tricksters will suck up all the air portraying Obama as a scary black secret Muslim who attended a white-hating scary black Christian church. As long as Obama gets smeared as much as possible, McCain will just run as notObama, instead of notBush.
