FLASHBACK: McCain gave Bush ‘an A’ for looking in Putin’s eyes and getting ‘a sense of his soul.’

Since the crisis in Georgia began, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has used aggressive rhetoric against Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, arguing that the former president wants “to restore the old Russian Empire.” His campaign claims that he’s been “prescient” on Russia and Putin. But, as Jason Zengerle points out today, McCain actually praised President Bush in 2001 when he said he could trust Putin because he “looked the man in the eye” and got “a sense of his soul.” Asked by Chris Matthews how Bush did in his Russia trip, McCain replied, “I give him an A. I’d give him an A”:

mccainbush.jpgMATTHEWS: Talk about instant background checks. He instantly decides this guy was trustworthy.

Sen. McCAIN: The president did a good job in his European trip. I think that most Americans appreciate the job he did, and they’re slightly resentful at the kind of condescension that–that d–that Europeans seem to have shown towards Ronald Reagan as–and–as well as… [...]

MATTHEWS: On a four-point system, how did the president do in Russia, on his trip to the re–meet Putin in Slovenia?

Sen. McCAIN: On Russia, I d–I give him very high marks.

MATTHEWS: What?

Sen. McCAIN: I–I give him an A. I’d give him an A.

Digg It!

A succession of ads showing McSame talking out of both sides of his mouth wold be devestating. McCain vs. McCain. He'd sink on the weight of his own hypocrisy.

  2. WaltB Says:

Neither of them have a clue about anything outside our borders. Both believe military might will take care of everything (but we've run out of that, and Russia has a whole lot in better shape!). Neither wants to do something statesman-like (like talk to folks that don't like you). Guess we're going into WWIII before the election.

  3. pete Says:

Considering the way Flippy McSpin bends over for the Reichwingers? I have no doubt he would gladly give Chimpy his "A".

Might I inquire if there is any right of center scenario you will not defend? It seems you have many issues relative to the left of center but are an endless explainer away of everything else. Is this just your schtick or do you actually believe all your stuff? Just wondering...

  8. TripleKick 13 Says:

TP's Matt offers no point to his story, as usual.

Just throwing more crap on the wall, hoping something sticks.

  9. And Yet... Says:

...and others gave him a resounding "F" & shook their heads in disbelief @ the stupidity, but who in government or media cared what they thought?

OT- Repub convention to occur not long from now. Perhaps this time around the delegates there can tape some candy babies to their faces (used to be known as juju babies, even further back as ni--er babies). Tape 'em all over, have some fun, big laughs.

You know, instead of band-aids with purple hearts on 'em to further the denigration of our last Presidential candidate.

After Limbaugh's spew yesterday, it seems only appropriate...

  10. RUCerious Says:

McCain replied, “I give him an A. I’d give him an A”:

I've notice McIIIrd doing this a lot.

Is it that he just feels like the person didn't hear him the first time?

Or did he already forget he said it once?

Cute editing. Included in the […] above is… “[Bush]went a little too far in saying that he could trust [Putin]…”

But in general, McCain agreed with Bush - just like he always has. If he disagreed completely he would have given him an F. If he disagreed just a little, he would have given him a B. But he wholeheartedly agreed with Bush (as always) so he gave him an A.

  15. stateofthedivision Says:

Now McCain says he sees KGB in Putin's eyes. Or is it FBI, given today's announcement that all the agency needs to spy on Americans is a "valid purpose"?

  16. dbadass Says:

So TripleKick13 and good_gooly4 was Mr Bush wrong about that weird eyes and souls shit or wasn't he. I don't need you to attack nor defend him just tell me if it was a bullshit comment or not.

  19. Above the Clouds Says:

What's the argument? Both Bush and McCain are simply unprincipled, Republican idiots being enabled and defended by other Republican idiots. Has politics seen two more intellectually lacking people?

I'd say you need to stop watching The Godfather movie and delve into the real world , you insane dipshit.........

  21. Badger Says:

Putin is as popular in Russia, as Bush is UNpopular in America. A lot of this has to do with $125 a bbl oil, but it is nevertheless true.

    What's McCain's Biggest MISTAKE ???

Not realizing how CRUCIAL good relations with Russia are.

He doesn't need to believe it, he just reads the RNC talking points notes and types away...it's just a job, and at 10 cents a post he needs to keep busy.

  25. dbadass Says:

I think it is a trite and overused expression that means close to nothing. It sort of reminds me of "freedopm isn't free" or sportscasters saying stupid shit like "this team really knows how to win games" Too bad it's author has had it jacked by some many trite users

Holy shit , you really are insane and such a tool.........

  28. Bobwurst Says:

That's the only time either of those legacy-losers got an A in anything. they didn't have to try because they knew the skids were already greased for them. Do we really want another self-satisfied spoiled rich kid ruining this country?

YOUR WHAT? I didn't know it was the Punt, Pass, Kick, and SpeAch Competition. Was there a swimsuit component as well?

  30. mary Says:

Obama camp lashes out at 'quick-draw' McCain

'Obama's senior foreign policy adviser Susan Rice meanwhile vied to demolish McCain's attempts to cast himself as more trustworthy than Obama in a time of international crisis.

McCain's "tendency is to shoot first and to ask questions later," she said on a conference call alongside former White House anti-terrorism adviser Richard Clarke, who called the Republican "trigger-happy" and "reckless."'

More of that, Obama camp, more of that.

So, A out of 4? What's that mean? What's next, will he say "I think I have L houses"?

John, c'mon, wake up. Pay attention. This isn't the naval academy, where you can finish 894th.

  33. Bobwurst Says:

That was expected gigi, bush is the legacy student at Andover and Yale. Mccain is the legacy student at the Naval Academy. Both were terrible, bottom of the barrel students at their institutions. Both learned nothing except that they didn't have to work because their daddys' had pull. Obama went to Harvard on a scholarship because he is smart.

  34. Badger Says:

    Good Golly,

By What possible criteria could you claim that this country is NOT More RUINED after 8 years of President Bush in office?

  35. Bobwurst Says:

    Talk about anti-American sentiment.................

  38. dbadass Says:

    good_golly4:
I was referring to my question of both yourself and TripleKick13 as to whether or not that weird eyes/soul comment was bullshit or not. TripleKick13 or any version tried to dodge with an unrelated Sun-Tze comment. Does it strike you as weird that a real answer has not been offered?

  39. pete Says:

So. Chimpy was wrong. McSpin agreed with him. And neither one of them saw this, hypothetical, change coming.

Why are they being defended on foreign policy again?

  40. dbadass Says:

wow! Do souls do that? What do you think TripleKick13?

  41. pete Says:

Is it not more likely that Russia, once it recovered from the collapse of the Soviet Union, has continued it's militaristic ways in order to regain "superpower" status? And is it not likely that the Reichwingers have largely ignored this disturbing development because Iraq was the priority?

When I looked into John McCain's eyes, I saw a confused fuddy-duddy who thinks vanilla pudding Tuesday's should replace Martin Luther King Day. And I only looked into them for two seconds!

  47. Pernell Says:

Two points can be found in this post.

One is that Glenn Kessler, a WP Pulitzer Prize winning reporter, said that people at the State Department say Bush was conned by Putin using an old made up KGB story about a cross and that is what led to Bush's "soul" vision.

Also in the post, we find that though Bush will spy on Americans without warrant and think nothing of it, he refused to spy on Putin when all it would have taken was changing a battery.

    Astounding and true.

  48. Paul W Says:

McCain actually praised President Bush in 2001 when he said he could trust Putin because he “looked the man in the eye” and got “a sense of his soul.”

I've always felt that was one of the more embarassing Bush moments. To tell the American people, not to mention the rest of the world, that essentially, his foreign policy was based even in part, by looking into someone's eyes was akin to discovering Ronald Reagan's use of astrology in his policy decisions.

Of course Putin has played Bush for a fool since then and no doubt he'll do the same to McCain.

I guess looking into someones eye is a euphemism for downing a bottle of Vodka, eh?
