Fox News Accidentally Airs Controversial Right-Wing Ad That It Had Declined To Run

The right-wing American Issues Project has spent $2.8 million on an ad questioning Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) relationship to William Ayers, a founder of the 1960s radical group Weather Underground. American Issues Project had hoped to air the controversial ad on Fox News, but even the conservative network refused, reportedly wanting nothing to do with it:

American Issues Project, the sponsor of the ad, is a nonprofit 501(c)4 organization. One of its board members, Ed Failor Jr., was a paid consultant for McCain’s campaign in Iowa last year. The campaign paid his firm $50,000 until July 2007. American Issues Project spokesman Christian Pinkston said Failor has no connection to the McCain campaign now.

Organizers sought to air the ad on Fox News Channel, but a Fox spokesman said the network declined to run it. He would not say why.

This principled stand fell by the wayside today when Fox News accidentally aired the most of the ad. During a segment about Obama’s ties to Tony Rezko, Fox News attempted to play McCain’s latest ad on the subject. However, the Ayers ad began playing instead.

After the ad was almost done, correspondent Molly Henneberg looked confused and said, “This is not the right ad.” Shep Smith replied, “It was an ad. Come on, give us a break. It’s busy back here today.” Watch it:

Election experts yesterday raised concerns that this ad may violate election law. Laura MacCleery of the Brennan Center for Justice told Huffington Post that the ad is clearly “express advocacy” and “cannot legally be paid for with corporate money, including those of a non-profit.” In response, the American Issues Project has agreed to disclose its individual donors to the FEC.

Digg It!

UpdateNews Hounds notes that the ad also ran on Thursday's edition of Hannity and Colmes.

  1. Marie Says:

    Accidentally?
Like accidentally labeling negative reports on congresspersons with a "D."

  2. Marie Says:

Fox does nothing unintentionally -- they are programmed from above and get their daily talking points.
This was simply their way of plaing an illegal ad and then saying "oops."

  3. Hussein McCain Says:

It was an accident, wink wink nudge nudge, say no more.

  4. Xisithrus Says:

Oops, we didnt mean to run that ad [snicker] please dont fine us [snicker] it was an accident [giggle]

  5. ucsbclassics53 Says:

    Like McCain doesn't...

Keating 5, lobbyists...a convicted FELON, G. Gordon Liddy, you name it...Ralph Reed, John Hagee, Reverend Parsley, etc...

    oh it's okay, I forgot...IOKIYAR...

  6. VerbalKint Says:

It's incredible, but with Fox it is predictable. In a just world, Fox would have been stripped of its license to broadcast years ago.

  7. jpopphan Says:

Yeah.... I am sure it was an "accident". If they had decided to not run the ad, then why was it in a place where it could be aired accidentally?

To me, this sounds like Faux News is willing to pay the fine in order to smear Obama.

    It’s a great ad.

Obama has had close associations with quite a few unsavory characters in his rise to the top of of Chicago politics.

Yeah cheddar-head, like you're really concerned about politicians associating with "unsavory" characters. Too bad there isn't enough time in the day -- no year -- to catalog the list of "unsavory" characters Bush, the GOP and your hero McCain have associated with. But wank away if you must.

    Just saying . . .

  10. muzz Says:

    Accidentally - my ass !

  11. ucsbclassics53 Says:

sINCE You guys on the wingnutosphere love to play the guilt by association game, let's do so too. McCain => Charlie Black who is associated with Iraq/Iran’s Ahmad Chalabi, Mobutu Sese Seko, Ferdinand Marcos, Somalia’s Mohamed Siad Barre, Nigeria’s Ibrahim Babangida, and Angola’s would-be dictator Jonas Savimbi.

I hope Obama releases a Charlie "Certainly, it [a terrorist attack] would be a big advantage to him" Black ad

  12. EvilPoet Says:

Fox accidentally on purpose catapulted the propaganda? I'm shocked I tell you! Shocked. /sarcasm

It’s worth considering the people that helped him along the way.

I hope they release a Jerimiah Wright ad next

It must be great to that low bar of guilt for Democrats. It's just too bad that non-rapid right-wingers aren't as easily convinced, huh?

"Close associations" that turn out to be serving on the same foundation board of directors... or purchasing property at market value from them... or attending a church where a firey pastor is prone to saying outrageous things as a means to fire up his congregation...

yeah, it's too bad for you guys that most of America isn't as easily duped -- er, I mean convinced of such moral turpitude.

  14. I. B. Leary Says:

Gee, faux news sneaks in a Obama smear ad. Man, I bet no one saw that coming! It's only just begun.

  15. Frosty Cupcake Says:

This was intentional, pure and simple.

  16. 666lattes Says:

  18. MapleStreet Says:

And of course, the fact that you have a clip, tells me that there are now thousands of copies on Youtube, etc. And the conservative blogs are going ga-ga steering the sheeple to the copies.

In short, sounds like it could be an attempt to set up a viral marketing video.

    Ooops ?

which of the two Americas do you live in? Most of the people in my America are dumb as a sack of bricks and are more likely to name able to name more items on the McDonald's value menu than members of congress.

(To think...all this time I thought Edwards was speaking metaphorically. lol)

  20. Chuck Feney Says:

Let's keep a tally of the number of times that they 'accidentally' air the ad between now and election day.

  21. Hussein McCain Says:

Jim, I officially dispute the contents of the ad.

Kind of like their repeated mistake of putting a "D" behind the name of every Republican that's indicted or otherwise disgraced....

"Fool me once, shame on me ... fool me twice ... ummm ... ehhh ... ahhh ... won't get fooled again."

    Cheers,

  23. Leftside Annie Says:

Jimmy - even curiouser that nobody disputes that you are an idiot.

    Just sayin'.

  24. ralph the wonder llama Says:

deebaser, I know many Americans are vulnerable to attack ads -- otherwise they wouldn't move the needle.

What I was talking about were the kinds of non-stories that seem to so effortlessly convince the wingnuts that Obama (or any Democrat, doesn't matter) conceals a cauldron of evil and corruption beneath his pressed suit.

They just buy into it sooo easily.

Most Americans are a little skeptical, and if we had a media that did its job, these kind of smears would evaporate like dew on a summer morning.

but, sadly, you have a point.

  27. lm945 Says:

There's no way this was an accident.

If Fox really declined to run the ad, why did they have a copy?

  28. Shayne Says:

Doesn't that article say basically that this ad violates McCain-Feingold? And a campaign adviser works for the corporation that financed the ad but McCain denies it. Oh he's a straight talker alright.

  29. JMOHR Says:

If you do not get it through your little thick skulls and if it has not sunk into your little pea brains, this is all out war with an enemy who seeks nothing less than the end of democracy in the United States.

The Republican party has made it clear for years that it intends to create a one party state through it Permanent Republican Majority program. We have seen their willingness to lie, cheat and steal in order to gain power. DoJ, HUD, DoD and many other government agencies. The Bill of Rights, separation of powers (or of church and state), international prohibition against torture and every other indication of democracy, freedom or decency has been pissed upon by the Republicans and their corporate, religious and ideological lackeys. It is time to recognize that they are no different than Nazi's, Stalin's followers or the Baathist party under Saddam.

  30. katy Says:

whatever makes anyone think it was an accident?

  31. katy Says:

oh, i see no one else thought it was either...

  32. RUCerious Says:

Nice, accident. Maybe the FCC should be pulling Fox's license.

  33. Marie Says:

    JMOHR
If more people would read books like The End of America by Naomi Wolf, or the Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, they would have their eyes opened.
This is history repeating itself - this is a grand scheme, a plan by the republican party for decades in which they have carefully filled key positions all in preparation for their one-party, republican rule.

  34. gummitch Says:

    goon_golly5 Says:

    1. They ran it by mistake.

Sure they did. Just like they've mistakenly labeled Republican troublemakers as (D) or mistakenly called Obama Osama. Goon, I've got this bridge you will want to buy.

    2. They only ran part of it.

    Oh, well, that's OK, then.

    3. They admitted it was a mistake.

No. They claimed it was a mistake, and wingnuts and the truly naive will believe that a major propaganda network "mistakenly" runs an ad that just happens to slam Obama right when they're running a "news" piece that is slamming Obama.

    4. Even if it hadn’t been a mistake, it wasn’t run as an ad, it was run as part of a news story.

Again, this makes it all better? Running a copy of an ad for free rather than charging for it makes it better?

I’d like to see the whole ad though. Have a link?

I see you've found it all by yourself. And I'm sure you think it's just dandy, because it reinforces every preconception you've got, just like FoxNews does.

  35. Ditch Mitch KY Says:

Just remember -- Rove works for McMansion and for FOX news. You can be damn sure this was no "accident." It was a convenient free release of Rove filth on FOX news.

  36. pete Says:

Hahahahaha! Leave it to stupid trolls to rally to the defense of a "news" network that has 24 hours a day to defend itself.

  37. katy Says:

    FREE LIES!

There was no mistake on FOX, we have cataloged over 850 separate mistakes on FOX during political coverage. Every single one either (1) favored the Republican e.g. leaving off party name of criminal suspects.; or (2) misdirected attention to the Democrats.

Your soul is damned. Do the right thing and exile yourself to the bowels of hell.

  41. cleek Says:

no accident. now that they've showed it, all the other networks are going to show it, just to show what Fox did. and now all the pundits are going to talk about it. and it's going to be a big hit on YouTube.

and any legal action against FOX gives the clip even more exposure.

no accident - very very clever in fact.

  42. Magic Dog Says:

Yes, that was a mistake alrighty. Fox News would never run that sort of thing on purpose. No siree.

Wow... Game never said that PoWs are worthless or anything of that sort. They just stated that McCain is using the PoW story waaaayyyy too much, we are getting tired of it.

And hating this country? Again, he never said that and it is pure speculation. Also, wasn't this country founded on the idea that we shoudl disagree to encourage discussion? I am sick of all the people who when someone has a differing opinion say they hate this country...

Face it faux, mcchimpys houses and his seesawing are his own ignorant fault.

  54. Marie Says:

McCain was born into privilege, never had to worry about employment, insurance or other mundane things -- he dumped his first beauty queen wife when she lost her beauty, for the blonde heiress who could guarantee the rest of his life would be so privileged.
McCain is an elitist, an out of touch one at that - who cannot relate to the average joe, yet fools think he cares.
    -------------
McCain is overplaying his POW background to the point where it is becoming meaningless. His record in the Senate against POWs/MIAs, his Keating 5 scandal, his flip-flops to embrace Bush, his flip-flops to embrace the religious wackos, his votes to cut benefits for all veterans, his support for dumping nuclear waste in Yucca Mountain -- the majority of his campaign staff are lobbyists for special interests -- McCain says one thing and does another -- like a high priced prostitute, it all revolves around the payment.

McCain, in his status as POW, was appointed chairman of the committee to investigate the unaccounted for POWs and MIAs. Ross Perot was gaining in popularity for president at the time and that was a big part of his campaign. The Republican idea was to stop him. So McCain's committee, in the end, decreed that all the evidence, testimony and records were not credible.
Some loyalty to his fellow POWs. Yet fools believe that because he was a POW, he should be president.

  58. John Henry Says:

Laura MacCleery of the Brennan Center for Justice told Huffington Post that the ad is clearly “express advocacy” and “cannot legally be paid for with corporate money, including those of a non-profit.”

If that's the case, isnt the Fox News channel itself illegal? If not its one HUGANTIC loophole in the campaign finance laws.

  59. Braveheart Says:

Hmmm... a mistake, eh? How did the video end up in the control room in the first place? It fell out of some technician's lunchbox and they accidentally cued it up during a live broadcast by mistake? Fox News' studios are so disorganized and cluttered that videos intended for broadcast are scattered about amongst piles or rejected ads?

How often to do see the wrong video run on a live show that is allowed to go on for more than a second or two? The technician has an "Oh, shit" moment and then the director cuts to the anchor who looks cluelessly into the camera for a split second and then awkwardly says something to the effect of "We'll have that for you in just a minute."

It takes Fox News 29 seconds (at least) to realize they have the wrong video running? I hope Rupert doesn't leave any of his porn lying around the office - could be embarrasing!

I am a liberal and they have NEVER pushed my agenda. Your constant repitition of stupid zombie memes shows conclusively that you have been assimilated and have ZERO ability to think for yourself. Where was the liberal agenda during the runup to the war liberals were ALWAYS against or when they ignored the Downing Street memo for at least a month while it was the biggest story in the WORLD outside US media. I'm sorry to put in a post that is off-the-subject, but I was at a party here in Denver tonight, and was talking to a "Old White Woman for Obama" who is here for the convention from New Jersey, and I just have to share her thoughts. she was amazing sharp, and had this theory about the VP selection that I thought was pretty fascinating. She expects Barack to select Biden, but that in a vote during the convention, the governor of Pennyslvania, and I think his name is Ed Raddell (sorry, but everyone was drinking a lot of wine, so things got a little bit fuzzy). She must have been about 80 years old, but sharp as a tack, and has been a national delegate more than once. She was part of a group here called Stonewall Democrats, and was fascinating to talk to. This may all be a total crock, but she really got me pumped up, and her depth of knowledge and insight was refreshing. Again, I know this is off-topic, but I just wanted to share this because she gave me a lot of hope.

What is a 'conservative republican' anyway? They want less government in peoples lives, so they say. Yet they want to overturn Roe v. Wade, how much government involvement would that take if abortions were suddenly outlawed? They want prayer in schools, howmuch government interference would that take to enforce? McINSANE wants a draft, again more government, he also wants to go to wars all over the world, that takes a lot of governent. To achieve these goals they have the 'religious right'as their republican base. Yet these supposedly god-fearing folks don't rely on any god or god's will to get the GOP in office. They will lie, cheat, steal, with the ferocity of the devil. I don't get it, do you?

  78. lemonashes Says:

Oh and I should also ask what is a "pro-lifer" it seems the pro-life movement is only pro-life if it's a zygote. They seem to be also the pro-war movement which kills men, women, and children. If Bush sent our troops into Iraq intentionally knowing there were no wmds or connections to al quaeda then he murdered 4000+ US troops and 90,000+ Iraqis which is 1st degree murder. McCain wants to declare wars all over the place and this "strength" of his may be along those same murderous lines. Yet the religious right backs him because he's pro-life and for no other reason other than he's pro-war. And you know the conservative movement is awfully fond of presidents with the lowest of IQs, I mean between bushisms and McCainisms the total IQ might not be more than 70-80. And this seems perfectly fine with them cause you know Dukakis, Gore, Kerry, and Obama all have IQs probably above 100. That's just too scary to suggest an intelligent person could and probably should be running the country. But you know fox and it's robots are continually shouting at them that they need these idiots in the white house.

  79. kalpal Says:

Of course when Mark Foley was having a few problems Fox labled his as Democrat for several days before they noticed theis Republican stalwart was not excatly a member of the DNC but of the RNC.

Before long Fox will label Cheney/Bush as Democrats who disguised themselves as Republicans just so could screw up this country.
