American Family Association launches protest against Hallmark.

Today, the right-wing American Family Association (AFA) announced a protest of Hallmark for its decision to start selling gay marriage greeting cards. AFA wants Hallmark to “stop promoting a lifestyle that is not only unhealthy, but is also illegal in 48 states.” From the protest site:

We’ve all given or received Hallmark Cards – remember their slogan – “when you care enough to send the very best.” But promoting same-sex marriage for profit is not the very best for families or our nation.

Hallmark is a private company obviously driven by greed. Let them know you do not appreciate Hallmark promoting a lifestyle which is illegal in 48 states. American Greeting Cards, Hallmark’s competitor, does not offer same-sex marriage cards.

AFA also criticized Hallmark for having the secret purpose of “pushing[ing] same-sex marriage.” More on AFA’s previous boycotts here.

UpdateGood As You notes that an AFA affiliate has purchased boycotthallmark.com.

But promoting an illegal and idiotic invasion and occupation of a sovereign nation that had never provoked nor attacked us is ?

AFA also criticized Hallmark for having the secret purpose of “pushing[ing] same-sex marriage.”

By that logic, Hallmark also has the secret purpose of pushing illness, accidents and death since they sell sympathy and get-well cards.

They'd make a bundle if they began marketing, "I'm so sorry you're a republican idiot," cards. Lawdy, they couldn't keep 'em on the shelves....

And the AFA is a paranoid, homophobic, wacko right wing organization. Full of paranoid, homophobic, right wing sheeple.

In response to statement of the principles by the AFA regarding the AFA's stance on homosexuality, which stated, "We oppose the efforts of the gay movement to force its agenda in education, government, business and the workplace through law, public policy and the media," About.com editor Austin Cline stated, "The AFA's opposition here is quite reminiscent of the opposition mounted by groups like the KKK, another good Christian organization, to civil rights for blacks. They, too, fought the concept of accepting blacks living and working with whites as being 'normal.'

McMetal, agreed, and that didn't turn out to the "very best" for the families of the dead, maimed, emotional crippled, displaced or tortured, either here or abroad.

These people are the biggest scam artists ever. They know full well that these boycotts will lead to nothing. Their sole purpose is to consume money and regurgitate hatred.

The people who give them cash are pitible, naive dupes. This is akin to helping the finance minister of Nigeria move his funds to the US in exchange for a cut of the action.

Um, the lifesytle isn't illegal, last time I looked.

    But gay marriage is.

This about hatred, pure and simple. They don't merely reject the lifestyle, they actively hate those who live it.

  15. republicans hate facts Says:

But gay marriage is legal in the other 2 states, and the 'lifestyle' is legal in the 48 states where people get married even without state approval. What, Hallmark shouldn't service the 30 million people who can get married legally and the 270 million in states where people still get married?

Wow these kooks sure are loose on the screws...

  22. DemInME Says:

Good thing they have lawyers sending out press releases. It's my understanding that only a handful of states have deemed same-sex marriage illegal, while it's mostly unlawful in all but two.

Hard to believe they argue that the lifestyle is illegal...maybe they were talking about Saudi Arabia.

  23. mary Says:

The AFA is so awful. I used to work for a book chain in which ONE of our over 1,000 stores was found to have a book (which that store had received from a local distributor) that some would say was a little risque (operative word little) and next thing we knew we were the target of one of this group's campaigns and receiving bags and bags of identically written letters from people accusing us of selling porn and vowing to never set foot in one of our stores.

Which was a bit of a shame considering that by the wording of the letters they could probably have benefitted from reading something other than the hate-filled literature coming from the AFA!

The liberal blogosphere should counter these ridiculous boycotts with reverse boycotts. I'm personally going to buy a bunch of Hallmark cards I don't even need, especially cards for gay marriage.

  26. Max-1 Says:

    American Family Association (AFA) says:

“stop promoting a lifestyle that is not only unhealthy, but is also illegal in 48 states.”

NO State outlaws marriage between couples of the same sex. To say that same sex marriage is illegal in 48 States asserts that there are Laws that make it illegal. This is a bold face misleading assertion. Only TWO States have legally recognized the ability of same sex couples to get married.

The lifestyle is no less "unhealthy" than that of straight people. In fact, HETEROSEXUAL FEMALES are at risk for AIDS... it's not because they're gay or even lead unhealthy lifestyles, it's because the ignorant society we live in promotes unprotected sex because birth control and abstinence are deemed morally unnatural and unhealthy by this same group.

    How is the lifestyle illegal?

Same sex couples are not allowed to marry in most states, but that's a far cry from it being illegal. In Washington for example we are working on good domestic partnership laws. Although people here still cannot marry they can receive many of the benefits of marriage by entering into a domestic partnership.

And, many people consider true marriage to be something sanctioned by a church. Although the state may consider a couple a domestic partnership, they may be married in the eyes of God by several churches.

    _________________________________________________________

That's a good point, and worth mentioning. Unlike the AFA McDonald's boycott, which actually proclaimed "boycott" on their link: ( http://boycottmcdonalds.com/ ), this one doesn't say "boycott" and it doesn't even ask that people quit shopping there (which I find a bit odd). I have no idea why an officer of one company who chooses to sit on the board of the NGLCC -- a move that had NO impact on McDonald's customers until AFA gave the issue some publicity -- merits a boycott, but another company selling greeting cards aimed a gay market does not. How does AFA make these decisions? And what little nuances determine whether something rates a boycott or an e-mail petition drive?

But whether it's a real boycott or an e-mail petition drive, the result will be the same as it is with every flap the AFA raises. It will either be ignored completely, or it will provide free publicity that will help Hallmark, by letting people who want these cards know where they can get them.

In fact, it may boomerang even worse than that. Hallmark has already said that carrying these cards is up to each individual store -- probably because the demand for them would be highest in states where gay marriage or civil union is legal. However, gays have private commitment ceremonies everywhere, and as word of these cards gets out, they may be asking local Hallmarks in places like Omaha to carry them. It would really twist AFA's panties in a wad if this went viral due to their efforts.

By the way -- I generally don't buy greeting cards because they have gotten so expensive. I can make really nice ones on my home computer and printer for a lot less, and I can make them for any occasion I choose (whether AFA likes it or not).

Where's the AFA outrage about KBR substandard wiring in shower trailers in Iraq that killed over 15 Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines?

Oh well, it doesn't matter, at least they get the most important issues.

  120. Idyll Says:

AFA also criticized Hallmark for having the secret purpose of “pushing[ing] same-sex marriage.”

Have some of these members of the AFA ever been in some Hallmark stores and realized...you know, that some of these clerks and store owners don't exactly "play for their side"? I know, these people couldn't spot a gay person "working" in any store unless they stapled a sign to their foreheads with the word written in bold crayon. But if they're at the bar or the gym...it's too obvious, because after a few drinks these "heterosexual family men/women" suddenly "know" which "gay" people are "attractive" to them.

  131. ucsbclassics53 Says:

  135. EugeneDebs Says:

AFA wants Hallmark to “stop promoting a lifestyle that is not only unhealthy, but is also illegal in 48 states.”

This is factually incorrect. Gay marriage cannot BE illegal in 48 states and legal in two. A legal gay marriage cannot be performed in 48 states that is not the same thing. The fair faith clause of the Constitution is clear on this issue One state CANNOT fail to honor the legality of what another state legally does. They cannot say people are not married who are legally married in another state this is pretty black letter.

The sickness in need of treatment is ignorance and bigotry such as yours. Homosexual behavior has ALWAYS been with us and it evident in the animal kingdom. Name calling is a poor way to make your case that gay love is true love.

To anybody with reason it's clear to see the bodies of men/male and woman/female are designed for procreation and to compliment each other. That is one the most fundamental functions of the body and basic truths of life. Not unlike all other living creatures. That's not my logic that's nature’s logic.
I admit it might only works some 95% of the time...
I do believe the love of God is such that there are ways for God's children to acommodate that without compromising the original order and intent of life...man for woman and woman for man to create new life and to experience the different realms of love and joy found within the original blueprint of family.

You are clearly prattling about something you know nothing about. Are you really claiming that only coitus is allowable sex? The facts are clear.
