Flashback: McCain didn’t know what kind of car he drove.

As we noted earlier, Climate Progress’s Joe Romm wondered what the carbon footprint of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) numerous houses might be. Asking the same question, the global warming deniers at the National Review — in an effort to attack McCain for having a climate change plan — dug up a 2007 interview revealing he knew neither how many houses he owned nor what car he drove:

cad.jpg In our News interview, he was asked what kind of car he drove. As with Politico’s question about home ownership, he didn’t know and had to ask a nearby aide. “A Cadillac CTS,” she told him. But then the senator was quick to point out that he had bought his daughter a Prius — the prefect (sic) halo symbol for his green pretensions. [...]

We also pressed McCain on the home issue, though at that time he was only willing to reveal two of his dwellings: one in Phoenix and a second home in Sedona. And he was quite proud of the fact that he had installed solar panels on the Sedona pad.

Digg It!

    McCain drives?

    Holeeee crap!
He probably drives like Novak too.

that’s scary, and dangerous to anyone around his routes.

  2. MCMetal says:

Doesn’t know the name of the car he drives

Doesn’t know how many homes he owns

Doesn’t know how to pronounce the Georgian president’s name (though he claims they’re “friends”)

Is there anything this wrinkled old d0uchebag actually does know ?

McCain also knows that he’s white. Unlike that scary guy with the odd name.

That fact alone has got to worth a couple million votes.

  7. ralph the wonder llama says:

So the National Review’s defense of McSame is “he’s not elitist; he’s just a forgetful old man”?

    Good one.

  8. citizen_pain says:

    Sure there is.

He knows how to use his father’s credentials to get him into the naval academy, where he graduated 5th from the bottom of the class.

He knows how to crash jets and get shot down over Vietnam.

He knows how to dump crippled wives and marry elitist trophies, then ride their filthy rich coattails the rest of his life.

He knows how to flip-flop and pander.

He knows how to relinquish any honor or credibility he may have had as a ‘maverick’ by hiring former lobbyists, people he made a career on railing against, to run his campaign.

Along those same lines, he knows how to abandon all semblance of an honorable campaign he pledged to run by using Rove, et al, the same people who assassinated his character in 2000, to try and assassinate the O man’s character.

  26. misshusseinmolly says:

I realize that since McCain has been a candidate, he probably hasn’t driven a car of his own at all. Still, it’s odd that he wouldn’t remember his last car.

Cars are rather special to most people — we tend to bond with them in ways different from the way we relate to other machinery. I just did an informal poll with my co-workers, asking each of them to name their last three cars. All could remember them with no problem — many of them also remembering the years they owned them. Of course, McCain could be the exception.

The only other person I knew who forgot what his last car was was my grandfather during the early stages of dementia.

If one follows the links through the US News report, one discovers that this “relative gas guzzler” (when only the “city” mileage is considered” gets 26 mpg on the highway.

Not bad. Not bad at all for a luxury car. But then, that information wouldn’t work very well to smear Obama as an “elitist”, would it?

By the way, citizen_pain, you remind me of the proposal Schwarzenegger floated here in California for a few minutes a while back. he wanted to change the gas tax from per gallon to per mile. The obvious result would be to lower the tax on gas guzzlers and increase it fuel-efficient vehicles.

How’s that for a great idea?

Did you ever think that might be because she and Barack have two children? Maybe?

At least they REMEMBER what type of car they drive. This thread isn’t about gas-guzzlers vs. not gas-guzzlers, this thread is about the fact that:

McCain is either so senile or so out of touch that he:
    A) Cannot remember how many houses he owns. Sorry, there is no excuse for this, no way to spin it. He’s either senile, so can’t remember, or he’s elitist/out-of-touch in that he owns so many HOUSES he doesn’t know how many he owns. House and ties cannot be compared. A house is VERY different from a tie, can’t believe I have to point that out.

    B) Cannot remember what type of car he drives. He’s either so senile he can’t remember or he’s so out-of-touch that all he knows is it’s an expensive car that the Proles can’t afford.

    C) The President of the United States should have enough brain power to know how many house he owns, what car he drives OR should have the decency to just own up to the fact that he owns seven houses.

    Good luck spinning.

McCain’s “memory lapses” are way more frequent, they involve information about HIMSELF (pointing to either senility or elitism), and in the case of his ‘memory lapses’ regarding European geography and Muslim demographics (i.e. he doesn’t know the difference between Sunni and Shia) they could actually get people KILLED and cause America to be even more FU(KED royally and laughed at louder around the world than we are now.

upside, that’s not Gigi’s game. What she hopes to do is by ignoring all of McCain’s serious gaffes (”Surge began the Anbar Awakening”, Iraq/Pakistan border, renegotiating the Colo. River compact and on and on) and focusing only on Obama’’s slips of the tongue, she can make it appear that a side-by-side comparison is unnecessary.

    Silly Gigi.

At least four times this summer, McCain’s campaign has had to essentially say “John McCain doesn’t necessarily speak for the McCain campaign”.

I don’t think saying “57 states” instead of “47 states” really rises to that level of campaign aoplogia.

Shoulda taken my advice, Gigi. You’re no good to anyone if you wipe yourself out trying to spin away reality. Go have a lie-down in the break room. We’ll say you went out for more Cheetos.

Obama was raised by a single mother who relied at times on food stamps, and went to top schools on scholarships and loans. His income has increased from book sales since he spoke at the 2004 Democratic convention.

In the first place, your link doesn’t say what make or model of van Michelle Obama was driving last October when that accident took place, so we really don’t know how “gas guzzling” it is. A van is a popular choice for families with small children, and the Obamas fit that category. Most vans get better mileage than the other soccer mom choice — an SUV — but, of course, it can vary depending on the make and model.

In the second place, what in the world does this have to do with the topic?

  84. liberal traitor says:

And how many of those Senators came by their money by ditching their recently crippled spouse to grab a trophy wife/husband with uber-cash?

Second, I saw a list from 2003 that showed McCain as being worth only about $1.6 million. Since he married his very wealthy wife many years before that, it is clear that not all of their financial worth can be determined from the reports they have to file alone. (The reports do not require a specific number, but that the Senator choose a range in which his or her assets fall.)

No he did not say there WERE 57 states here is Snopes take on it.

    http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/57states.asp

The actual intent behind Senator Obamas misstatement is easy to discern… he was trying to express the fact that in all the time he had spent on the campaign trail so far in 07-08 he had visited all 48 of the states in the continental US save one (that is one left to go excluding Alaska and Hawai’i but in his weariness he started off with 50 instead of 40 watch the video and notice the long pause between 50 and 7.

So to the non hiveminders of the world it was a slip of the tongue which is MILES from not knowing how many homes he has or what kind of car he drives that isnt even apples and oranges its gnats and blue whales. Does anyone think the former editor of Harvard law review doesnt know there are 50 states as opposed to graduated third from the bottom of his class at the Naval academy? That was weak.

  127. castagnera says:

Can you see her? Judy Garland in her red shoes, clicking her heels and repeating the mantra: “There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.” Voila! She wakes up in her very own little bed in her very own little shack out on her very own little Kansas farm, surrounded by family and farm hands, all safe and sound. Kitsch doesn’t get any more All-American than that.
What would happen, do you think, if John McCain clicked his heels together and mumbled, “There’s no place like home”? Apparently he might wake up in any one of about eight different places. I’ll bet none of the eight is located in Kansas.
Obama hopes to make political hay out of McCain’s inability to remember exactly how many houses he has. This is reminiscent of the elder George Bush’s expression of amazement about bar codes in a local supermarket during the 1992 campaign. Both gaffs make the candidate seem out of touch.
Obama boasts of having only one home. He hasn’t mentioned that his crib set him back a reported $1.65 million. That amount just about equaled the Obamas’ combined income for the year they made the purchase. The Chicago Tribune reported in November 2006, “They were drawn to a 96-year-old Georgian revival home that has four fireplaces, glass-door bookcases fashioned from Honduran mahogany, and a 1,000-bottle wine cellar, according to real estate listings and an interview.”
Obama’s book deals and his wife’s $300,000 a year vice presidency with Chicago University Hospitals together accounted for their seven-figure gross annual income.
Well, heck, Olympian Mike Phelps is expected to gross $30 million in product endorsements during the year ahead. So what’s the big deal about Obama and spouse pulling down $1.67 mil? Phelps no doubt will start accumulating real estate, too.
Meanwhile, he’s taking some heat for adding Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes to his list of clients. Writes one web pundit, “The deal has earned Phelps harsh criticism from some doctors, such as nutritionist Rebecca Solomon of Mount Sanai Medical Center. In a Daily News article posted this morning, Solomon said, ‘I would not consider Frosted Flakes the food of an Olympian.’ That’s the understatement of the day. I would consider Frosted Flakes to be the food of a generation of obese, diabetic, ADHD kids who need real role models they can follow, not sellout junk food promoters who trade fame for unethical profits.” (http://www.naturalnews.com/023914.html)
This guy’s rap on fatties reminds me of the last time McCain got into trouble, but not for anything he said. A McCain advisor, Phil Gramm, created the flap by calling America “a nation of whiners.” Well, sorry folks, but I tend to agree that the overweight whiner has become an American archetype. If the shoe fits (and the pants don’t), I say wear it.
But let’s stop whining for a minute here and take a reality break. McCain is rich. Obama is rich. Even a kid, whose only apparent distinction is the ability to move from one end of a swimming pool to the other faster than anybody else, is rich. If you’re rich, too, then more power to you.
The simple truth is, ain’t no poor folks likely to run for president, or senator, or most any other important post. The last poor president, I guess, was Harry Truman. As a sitting U.S. Senator seeking reelection, Truman sometimes slept in his car while on the campaign trail. Once upon a time he had gone bankrupt. When his term in the White House was over, he and wife Bess moved back to the home in Independence Missouri that they had shared for years with her mother.
They just don’t make ‘em like old Harry any more, folks. Senator Obama may play the “poor mouth” card against Senator McCain, but in reality his feet are just as firmly planted on the Yellow Brick Road as are his opponent’s.
