The United States has agreed to remove combat troops from Iraqi cities by next June and from the rest of the country by the end of 2011 if conditions in Iraq remain relatively stable.” The draft agreement, which “has the support of the Bush administration,” still needs to be “approved by Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki and other Iraqi leaders before it goes before Iraq’s fractious Parliament.”

The Shiite-run Iraqi government “is driving out many leaders of Sunni citizen patrols” that have allied with the U.S., known as the Awakening. “In restive Diyala Province, United States and Iraqi military officials say there were orders to arrest hundreds of members” of the Awakening “as part of large security operations by the Iraqi military.” “The state cannot accept the Awakening,” one Parliament member said.

A new Pew study finds that 50 percent of conservatives “think churches and other places of worship should stay out of social and political matters, up from 30 percent four years ago.” For the first time since Pew started this survey 12 years ago, a majority of Americans — 52 percent — also hold that view.

The Bush administration “proposed stronger job protections for doctors and other health care workers who refuse to participate in abortions because of religious or moral objections.” Jessica Arons of the Center for American Progress writes that the regulation could be used to block access to contraception.

On the trail today: Neither Barack Obama nor John McCain have any scheduled public events.

Tackling the “unsexy topic of our soaring national debt,” a new movie called I.O.U.S.A. warns: “America must mend its spendthrift ways or face an economic disaster of epic proportions.” The New York Times reports that it’s “yet another documentary that everyone should see but most will not.”

Despite President Bush’s promise to double the size of the Peace Corps, officials say the agency “is preparing to cut back on new volunteers and consolidate recruiting offices as it pares other costs amid an increasingly tight budget.” The budget shortfall “can be attributed to the declining value of the dollar overseas and the rising cost of energy and other commodities.”

“Federal wildlife monitors spotted nine polar bears in one day swimming in open ocean off Alaska’s northwest coast, and environmental groups say the event is a strong signal that diminished sea ice brought on by warming has put U.S. bears at risk of drowning or dying from effects of fatigue.”

The government’s terror watch list system “is hobbled by technology challenges, and the $500 million program designed to upgrade it is on the verge of collapse, according to a preliminary congressional investigation.” The report finds that the system, which includes as many as 1 million names, also “has problems identifying true potential terrorists.”

And finally: This week, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski “celebrated the signing of a missile shield deal…with Georgian wine, a choice sure to leave a bitter taste for Russia.” Poland, however, insisted that the choice of Georgian 2005 Kakhetian Royal wine was “not meant as a slight to Russia.” “(Rice) smiled and, if I remember correctly, said she had had a chance to deal with Georgia and its politicians, but had not tasted its wine,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Ryszard Schnepf.

Homes McCain doesn't remember having worth nearly $14 million

All told, the seven properties at which the McCains can rest their weary heads after long days on the campaign trail are valued at nearly $14 million, according to two separate research documents.

There's also the matter of the McCains' daughter, 23-year-old Meghan. While many 20-somethings are lucky if they get a car for a college graduation gift, Meghan's present for finishing at Columbia University was a $700,000 loft in a hip section of downtown Phoenix.

A GQ profile of Meghan McCain, whose only job at moment seems to be blogging on her father's behalf, described the loft's interior as looking "like a spaceship furnished by West Elm." Wooden block letters arranged above McCain's kitchen cabinets spell the word indulge.

One wonders if this is a lesson the young McCain learned from her parents, who, by the way, according to property records, paid for the condo in cash.

    http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Homes_McCain_doesnt_remember_having_worth_0821.html

You just can’t make this stuff up: which leads me to the McCain’s issue of servants or should I say the hiring of more servants.

The McCains increased their budget for household employees from $184,000 in 2006 to $273,000 in 2007, according to John McCain's tax returns. (source Politico)

They spent over a quarter of a million dollars on the hired help. But Cindy’s half-sisters aren’t going to get a dime of it; she’s a little strapped for cash trying to pay all the hired help. Whose calling who an Elitist? These people have no shame..

McCains buy second beach condo in the same building at the same time McCain advises Americans to skip their vacation to make their mortgage payments

It turns out that a few months ago, a McCain family corporation closed on a second multi-million-dollar beach condo in the same building in exclusive Coronado, California -- at around the same time that John McCain offered his somewhat tone-deaf observation that struggling homeowners were "working at second jobs" and "skipping a vacation" in order to make mortgage payments on time.

Cindy McCain discussed the timing of the second condo purchase in a June interview with Vogue magazine.

Cindy told her interviewer that the reason they needed a second beach condo in the Coronado building was that the first was too crowded because her kids were staying there and as a result she "couldn't get in the place."

Cindy continued: "So I bought another one."

On March 25, John McCain said:

And 51 million homeowners are doing what's necessary: working at second jobs, skipping a vacation, and managing their budgets to make their payments on time.

    http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/08/mccains_bought_second_beach_ho.php

Beer Heiress Barbie doesn’t like to be inconvenienced. Nobody should have to sleep on the sofa in the living room, least of all her children. Buy another condo, it was only $2.7 million dollars. At the same time John McCain made another attack on Obama saying that he made $4 million dollars last year. The dementia must really be setting in now because, the other day (Saddleback) he said people making $5 million and under was part of the middle class.

I don't get how they can attack Obama's ideas and then turn around and implement them, while patting themselves on the back for having come up wituch a terrific plan.

But what I really don't get is how the Average American fails to get that they are taking Obama's advice, while clling him too inexperienced. He's got more experience now than Lincoln, the man Al Gore calls the Greatest President, did at the time he took office.

Good. Now the candidates can stop attending faith-based forums, stop saying 'God bless America' at the end of every speech and stop pandering to the fringe religious kooks.

What the heck is this about?

The Scranton, Pennsylvania, Times-Tribune reports that on Monday, the top economic adviser for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Carly Fiorina, met with Tony Rodham -- the younger brother of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY -- and some others, including Rodham's wife, at the Dunmore, Penn., home of a political consultant close to the Clinton family, Jamie Brazil.

Brazil is now national director of Citizens for McCain.

This news comes just a few days after former President Bill Clinton praised Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for his position on global warming.

Boy, I can’t imagine why anyone would think the Clinton family is trying to defeat Obama so Hillary can run in 2012!

Clinton's office did not respond to a request for comment

No wonder McCain feels the economy is not so bad and his advisor Phil Gramm thinks America is just a nation of whiners--with this much wealth, an elite like McCain can really distance himself from middle America. McCain's economic plan is a full on extension of the Bush plan to only make government work for the 1% who are their biggest, corporate financial supporters. McCain's biggest issue will now be to find a way to wedge POW and the Surge into his answer for why he does not know how many houses he owns.

I saw part of a very interesting lecture given by a Political Science Professor on CSPAN. He was pretty much slamming the unconstitutional presidency of Bush, and his belief that he has powers to do whatever he wishes - which this is yet another one of those times that he thinks he can usurp the legislative power of Congress and play king.

Corsi's Obama Book Inspires New Dissidents On Right

At last count, there are only four members of the dissident cell -- Peter Wehner, Ross Douthat, Jon Henke and John Hawkins -- conservatives who have broken ranks to harshly criticize Jerome Corsi's The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality.

All four make the case that Corsi presents a greater danger to the conservative movement and the Republican Party than to Barack Obama -- that for the right to take Corsi under its collective wing represents a moral and intellectual failing.

Former Bush White House aide Wehner: "Corsi's approach to politics is both destructive and self-destructive. If Senator Obama loses, he should lose on the merits: his record in public life and his political philosophy..."

Ohio Voting Machines Contained Programming Error That Dropped Votes

A voting system used in 34 states contains a critical programming error that can cause votes to be dropped while being electronically transferred from memory cards to a central tallying point, the manufacturer acknowledges.

The problem was identified after complaints from Ohio elections officials following the March primary there, but the logic error that is the root of the problem has been part of the software for 10 years, said Chris Riggall, a spokesman for Premier Election Solutions, formerly known as Diebold.

The flawed software is on both touch screen and optical scan voting machines made by Premier and the problem with vote counts is most likely to affect larger jurisdictions that feed many memory cards to a central counting database rapidly.

Riggall said he was "confident" that elections officials through the years would have realized votes had been dropped when they crosschecked their tallies to certify final elections results and would have reloaded cards so as not to lose votes. Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has said no Ohio votes were lost because the nine Ohio counties that found the problem caught it before primary results were finalized.

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/08/21/ohio_voting_machines_contained.html

This logic error is part of the software and has been going on for 10 years and no one has fixed it yet??? What are they waiting for? Gee, I wonder which parties votes were dropped? Care to make a guess…

The Kitchen sink counter attack is almost certainly a coordinated effort to move the media - if not the political discussion - away from McCain's gaffe. And, by and large, the press has not taken the bait, likely because the meme that McCain is an elitist is fresh compared to the Obama lines (which were hit to death in the primary).

In a way, this could be a blessing for the Obama campaign. In all likelihood, McCain and his GOP allies were set to trot the Rezko and Ayers attacks out as the election approaches. They still might. But having those cards played in late August makes them all the more unremarkable if they are brought up again in late October.

But I know the GOP isn't going to allow THAT to happen. They have pretty much reconciled themselves to losing the White House for the next four years, but they're going to make darn sure it won't be any longer than that. Good morning spencers mom:) You are right, also the 2000 election was seriously messed up also. You figure this has been going on for ten years.

What really made me angry in the past is up North here we are democratics. That is where they pulled the "only two voting booth" thing in high voter districts. But in districts with low voter turnout they had, I kid you not, 10 to 11 voting machines. This doesn't happen down in the southern part of the state where they vote for the likes of Boehner, Oh no, it has to happen in districts like Cleveland and Parma. That is where Kucinich and Stephanie Tubbs-Jones get elected from.

But I have to admit because of all the scandal, they have corrected most of it. There were no long lines this last primary. But I agree with you in Ohio, you have to question everything because of the corruption is so bad even in the county's. We can forget the raid on all the Cleveland County Officials, the ones living in million dollar homes on county salaries. I loved it they showed the homes they lived in on TV that made a big impact. The people were absolutely outraged here.

What does this mean? Something like the "We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone" signs we see in restaurants? This is not about hamburgers.

Health care is private and for profit in America, how do they reconcile tampering with the free market like this. Seems like a kind of negative regulatory move.

  52. gummitch Says:

    goon_golly5 Says:

The New York post has posted a summary of . . . garbage produced by a writer for the National Review.

Good thing that McCain is so pure. Oh, wait . . .

When considering John McCain’s history of unethical behavior, the list usually starts (and ends) with the Keating Five scandal in the 1980s, for which McCain was rebuked by the Senate Ethics Committee for having shown, at a minimum, poor judgment. In the aftermath, McCain helped improve his public image, and bury the scandal, by becoming an advocate of campaign-finance reform.

But the notion that McCain cleaned up his act may not be entirely true. Take, for example, Donald Diamond, a wealthy Arizona real estate developer and generous McCain contributor, who wanted some coastal land in California freed up by an Army base closing.

In California, the McCain aide’s assistance with the Army helped Mr. Diamond complete a purchase in 1999 that he soon turned over for a $20 million profit. And Mr. McCain’s letter of recommendation reinforced Mr. Diamond’s selling point about his McCain connections as he pursued — and won in 2005 — a potentially much more lucrative deal to develop a resort hotel and luxury housing.

In Arizona, Mr. McCain has helped Mr. Diamond with matters as small as forwarding a complaint in a regulatory skirmish over the endangered pygmy owl, and as large as introducing legislation remapping public lands. In 1991 and 1994, Mr. McCain sponsored two laws sought by Mr. Diamond that resulted in providing him millions of dollars and thousands of acres in exchange for adding some of his properties to national parks. The Arizona senator co-sponsored a third similar bill now before the Senate. […]

For the California projects, the campaign said the McCain aide arranged the introduction to an Army official for Mr. Diamond’s team as “a constituent matter.”

  53. McWars Says:

Despite President Bush’s promise to double the size of the Peace Corps, officials say the agency “is preparing to cut back on new volunteers and consolidate recruiting offices as it pares other costs amid an increasingly tight budget.” The budget shortfall “can be attributed to the declining value of the dollar overseas and the rising cost of energy and other commodities.”

What are these people doing serving the public anyway? It's all laziness unless your stuck in the corner office at one of the drug(ged) companies.

These people are supposed to be calculating their worth by counting their cash. Get on a real career path, kids!

The Bush administration “proposed stronger job protections for doctors and other health care workers who refuse to participate in abortions because of religious or moral objections.” Jessica Arons of the Center for American Progress writes that the regulation could be used to block access to contraception.
    ____________________________________________________________

I agree that nobody should have to perform any task that violates their religious or moral objections. Muslims should not be forced to serve alcoholic drinks, Orthodox Jews should not be forced to work in a sausage factory, Hindus should not be forced to milk cows, and Catholics should not be required to perform abortions.

Ah, but if it was only that simple. Most of the people in the last paragraph get around these situations by finding lines of work where doing "the forbidden" would be highly unlikely.

But what if the only hospital/clinic in a small town is a religious institution (such as Catholic) that won't perform abortions? Most abortions are not emergency procedures, and a woman seeking one could check out options in other towns. If an abortion IS an emergency situation (such as the mother is in immediate grave danger if the pregnancy is continued), one would hope that even a Catholic hospital would do everything possible to save the mother's life, even if that means aborting a fetus.

And if it's a hospital or clinic where the person normally expected to perform abortions refuses to do it on moral grounds, that person should be reassigned to other duties.

I fervently believe in a woman's right to her own body. But I also believe that religious convictions must be protected under the First Amendment. Surely there's a way both can coexist.

Now, about birth control (and I assume we're talking about the "morning after" pill here). Because, unlike most abortions, time is of the essence for the woman who needs this. Pharmacies SHOULD be required to dispense this legal drug, as it does all others. If a pharmacist cannot bring himself to fill a prescription for this or any other legal drug, he needs to find another line of work.

    ____________________________________________________________

The national debt is a subject where so many Americans remain ignorant and unconcerned. If you point out to the average American the way the national debt has increased over the years, their usual reaction is "So?"

I have had people say to me -- seriously -- things like "if we need more money, we can always print more" (gee -- why didn't I think of that?). Or, when pointing out how much of our debt is held by China, they say "well, if China calls in their debt, all we have to do is declare war on them and take everything they've got" -- like this is a brilliant idea.

Many people don't see the debt a problem, because after all, it's not like anybody's asking us to pay it off, are they? They don't realize that we are paying INTEREST on the debt -- just like any other debt -- and lately that's been almost half a trillion dollars a year. Yep -- that's just the interest. Your taxes. My taxes. Tax money that could be going to something a lot more useful -- or better yet, enable tax cuts if this didn't need to be paid. Interest on the debt is the fourth largest single expense in the budget -- only defense, HHS, and Social Security take up bigger chunks of the pie.

And with each year that we operate with a budget deficit, the debt climbs and the interest amount gets higher. And as this happens, the value of the dollar shrinks, making things like the cost of petroleum higher, weakening the value of our exports, making us vulnerable to inflation, and other chaos.

Yes, people are ignorant of the potential problems here. If a movie can change that, it will be most welcome.

    LOL

I realized during a debate with a conservative that they genuinely do not understand that social democracies are about the people who pay taxes getting benefits from those collective taxes - as in, we can afford more if we pool our resources.

They seem to actually believe taxes are about robbing the rich to pay the poor. No wonder they've been silent on the recent GAO reports that show that it truly is the people's money, since 66% of corporations don't pay at all.

Now when Obama answers the question of how many properties he owns, does he count his $2 mil. family mansion as one or two properties, since it includes part of the neighboring property he bought from Rezko for less than what Rezko paid? I think that would count as 2 for starters, plus the DC home and whatever else he has.

Al Jazeera is actually pretty objective. I can't speak for Pravda, since I don't read it. DailyKos and ThinkProgress are progressive blog sites and present themselves as such (however, they DO back up their blog items with sources from the MSM, for the most part).

No, when I say "objective news source", I'm talking about mainstream media outlets that are NOT op-ed columns or pundits. I exclude blog sites of any ideology, unless they have sourced material from an objective source, and even then it tends to get spun (even TP has been known to do this, and when they do I call them on it). I also exclude media such as Fox News and anything Murdoch owns, the Moonie -- oops, Washington Times, and any other medium with an obvious political agenda.

But one thing I would never do is go into RedState, post an item from a source like a Michael Moore column, and expect them to take me seriously. Yet, that's essentially what you're doing here.

I personally go out of my way to avoid referencing sources like The Nation or Mother Jones, not because they don't do good work, but because they're clearly partisan in their approach and too easily dismissed as a result. You, on the other hand, do nothing but quote clearly Right Wing or simply non-credible sources; when you do occasionally point to another source, you either cite an editorial, or you cherry-pick through the article hoping no one else will check up on you (or perhaps you don't bother to actually read them).

Hey, I'm trying to help you here, and all you're doing is whining like a petulant child.

What I am saying (and have been saying) is that your posts have a greater chance of being taken seriously if you cite sources others find credible. Just as you are more likely to take me seriously if I cite sources you have at least a modicum of respect for.

Yet you are blowing what I am trying to tell you into some congflagration of double-standards and restrictions, which I have NEVER said or even implied. You are certainly entitled to use whatever sources you want to make your points. Just don't be surprised when you get ignored, laughed at, or eventually flagged when you become too annoying.

It basically boils down to what role you want to play here. A conservative contributor who presents thoughtful and intelligent opposing rebuttal, bolstered by sources that carry some weight? Or a troll? I had hoped you might want to be the former, and I'm trying to help you become that. But if it's your goal to be the latter, you are only worthy of being flagged and removed.

Oh, and I know one of your favorite points -- where you feel you have "scored" somehow, is that I have not given you a list of objective news sources. I haven't, because others have already done so, and I stand by their choices. Gummitch had a pretty good list up at post #139.

  147. Saint Augustine Says:

Why doesn't McSame know how many houses he and Cindy own? Maybe Cindy hasn't told him about all of them because she uses one or two of them to get away from her husband. This is a really good way to keep extra-marital affairs from your spouse (men are not the only ones cheating on their spouses).

Hell, Cindy knew very early on that Johnny boy was married, so she probably knew he would never be faithful to her and decided she would enjoy herself, and probably with a man younger that her.

Then there is the possibility that Cindy's father sent Cindy out to find a potential politician that he could buy an office for in exchange for that politician's protection. That might be the reason Cindy got the bulk of her father's money and businesses.

Are you going to be in the free speach cage the Democrats have set up for you?
    __________

Well, seeing as that bloated, drug-addled sack of porcine offal from hell Limbaugh was using his national radio platform to urge his mindless followers to go to Denver en masse and cause trouble, having some sort of security measures in place would appear to be a necessity.

I mean, where else are you going to hold mobs of drunken, unwashed, unruly GOOPer stooges bent on disrupting the convention?

Don’t get me wrong, Syayne. I love Chicago as a City and Metropolitan area. I just don’t like its dirty Democratic politics and dirty Democratic politicians.

You really do have reading comprehension problems. Zion and Waukegan politics have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Chicago. They're in Lake County while Chicago is in Cook County. BUT there are many strictly Republican towns within Cook County. The dirty politics Chicago was known for are basically gone. You complain about Obama helping pass legislation for low income housing. This scattered site housing was to get people out of the projects so they can advance themselves in better communities. The projects were an advantage because there was a high concentration of Democratic votes in a smaller area. How does working for scattered site housing dispersing these votes show Obama's corruption. And really if that's not what your getting at what is your freakin' point.

Wrigley Field ; one of only 3 stadiums/arenas that are actually cathedrals ...........And Chicago pizza kicks ass ...

Really McMetal can you believe GiGi dissing Chicago. I was born in Chicago, both my parents were born in Chicago. And I love the city. And people like GiGi who have a problem with it are welcome to stay away.

The New York post has posted a summary of BARACK’S FAVORS FOR CORRUPT CRONY, Tony Rezco.
    August 22nd, 2008 at 9:59 am

    * Obama cosponsored the Illinois Housing Initiative Act of 2003, which required the governor to develop a plan for more low-income housing and "provide[d] for funding for housing construction and rehabilitation and supportive services."

    * In 2003, Obama voted for the Affordable Housing Planning and Appeal Act, which required Illinois municipalities to make 10 percent of their housing units "affordable" (by definition, this included subsidized housing). This forced 46 communities just outside of Chicago to create more than 7,000 new "affordable" units - a huge boost in demand for area developers. The bill also provided loopholes for developers to circumvent local ordinances and regulations.

It really is the 2nd best city I've been lucky to have visited.

Sorry ; I'm a Jerseyite , and still nothing can compare to NYC for a degenerate like myself................

  155. Shayne Says:

You are such a child Gigi. I wish the Bushco style of politics was half as clean as the Chicago style politics. Don't tell me, you watched the Untouchables and you believe that people in Chicago still ride around in Model Ts with machine guns ablaze. Get a grip.

  156. Shayne Says:

I can't argue with that MCMetal. I personally have spent a lot of time in Los Angeles. And while I love it there and would be happy to move there any time it's not the same kind of city. My daughter wants to work on Broadway when she's old enough so I suspect I'll eventually get to spend time in NYC. I can't wait.

And a finish..........Pizza is an expendable commodity to me ; the GOP and their backers believe that of dark-skinned people with "funny" names...........

Your comment really doesn't pertain to people being able to choose which services they will provide. But, as long as you wish to change the subject, I've never seen any data on which, if any, medical inventors invented for profit. Data on which medical inventions are patented would give you a clue. I'd be interested in the seeing the results if you choose to research it.
