Biden: McCain has to ‘figure out which of the 7 kitchen tables to sit at.’

In a speech accepting his role as Barack Obama’s running mate this afternoon in Springfield, IL, Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) argued the American Dream has slipped away under eight years of Bush administration policies. He added that while Americans sit at their kitchen tables worrying about bills, McCain has to “figure out which of the 7 kitchen tables to sit at”:

I don’t have to tell you that. You see it in your shrinking wages. … We cannot afford to keep giving tax cuts after tax cuts to big corporations and wealthiest Americans, while middle class families are falling behind. [...]

Ladies and gentlemen, your kitchen table is like mine. You sit there every night after you put the kids to bed and you talk, you talk about what you need. You talk about how much you’re worried about being able to pay the bills. Well ladies and gentlemen, that’s not a worry that John McCain has to worry about. It’s a pretty hard experience — he’ll have to figure out which of the seven kitchen tables to sit at.

As Biden says, McCain’s plan would give America’s 200 largest corporations $45 billion in tax breaks, $4 billion to the top five oil companies, and $2 billion to the top 10 health insurance companies. And as the Tax Policy Center reported, McCain’s plan has no benefit for the poorest taxpayers.

  1. Red Pill Says:

And THAT is where Biden is going to prove valuable--Obama will present the cerebral, young, energetic visionary, while Biden will assert his dealmaking and foreign policy bona fides with a rhetorical sledgehammer.

It may not be perfect, but it ought to be fun.

  2. spencers mom Says:

    Fun, indeed!

Well, I guess not for McStain.

Biden kicked ass with his speech ; and the blue tie Joe sported while Obama donned a red one , complimented the other's beautifully...

Plus , when their wives joined the candidates , it made for quite an attractive group pic .............

  4. And the beat goes on Says:

I am lovin' me some Joe Biden! At first I wasn't thrilled but I spent a few hours researching his background and became more and more impressed. The little bit they (repukes) have thrown out there against Biden is pretty pathetic. He is a real guy with a real life and real family values. He is also a real fighter for what he believes in.

Right now I am listening to a McInsane surrogate whine on about the "not ready to lead comment." These a$$hoiles are such a sorry lot.

    Obama/Biden 08!!!!

  5. sectionop92 Says:

McCain better come up with some great swiftboating and some fanciful lies that could merit some Academy Award nominations, because the standard stuff he's been spouting just got shoved back into his endocrine system by Biden.

I think Karl Rove's bank account just added a nice eight figures to save the GOP's old maid.

    I second that emotion.

If we have to beat on somebody, do it to the troll population.

Watching this Jim Vandehei from the Politico on C-Span try to spin today for McSame. He's a putz.

  7. nofltwlt Says:

The long and short of McCain's comment regarding his homes is that it showed incredible lack of presidential acumen. He is more like a punk-ass, wise-cracking adolescent - you know, like Bush.

  8. rogerD Says:

The righties comeback is that Biden has been INSIDE seven houses before. Therefore, HE's the elitist.

  9. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

Loved Biden! I felt that energy all over again! House of Roberts - I watched Vandhei also.....very poor choice for C-Span after the rally.

  10. nigel Says:

I'm pretty sure the right will be pointing out that Joe Biden doesn't sit at the kitchen table wondering how to pay the bills, but he makes a very powerful case.

    He's a good choice.

  11. muzz Says:

like the infamous words from the movie Animal House - "THIS IS GREAT". The free ride from the media is over for McSame. The questions that they should be asking but won't will be put center stage by Joe Biden, and if the repukes do nothing but try to spin everything - they are toast. I am excited by what I've seen so far.

  16. Bob Says:

It'll be nice listening to two people that can speak in public with eloquence and intelligence. Biden and Obama speak with respect, and I'm tired of idiots speaking to us as if we are all four-year olds. Biden can be verbose, but that'll be good for rebublican regurgitation points. Joe can attack while Obama reiterates his stance in context. Good choice, but I admit that Barack would've had to pick a Manson worshiper for me not to vote for him. It hasn't taken long for the current admin to follow Obama's foreign policy suggestions. In some cases, mere weeks go by and they're doing exactly what he has said. Please, let's move the inauguration back a couple months, have Obama sworn in on Nov 20 so he can officially start getting us out of this hole. If not, I'm fine with him leading from the back seat until January. We can only improve.

  17. texaslady Says:

Obama/Biden will be a hard combo to beat...experience plus vision of change. Biden has had the backbone to speak out against bushie/cheney for quite awhile while everyone else kissed the hem of the robes.
Re: Biden's income his last IRS statement had him in the hole not outstandingly wealthy as most politicians, guess the lobbyists didn't buy him many lunches.
mccain/rover will be scratching hard to find some dirt for the koolaide drinkers to lap against two fine people. repubs won't know how to deal with honesty and integrity.

I just have one question. Does McCain even own a house? I thought it all belonged to sweet Cindy. Or am I misremembering McCain declaring nothing because everything is in her name?

I've said it before but it bears repeating: It does not matter whose name these McCain homes are under because, according to the State of Arizona community property laws, any property acquired during the course of a marriage are considered joint property in the eyes of the law.

The houses that are owned by Arizona Barbie's corporation(s) are another matter, but that is clearly not the case for four, five, six, seven (oh, who the heck knows!) of these houses.

The Obama ad says "Seven. Seven houses." and the only way McCain disputes that is to say "He's lying! It's really eight!" (or nine, ten, oh, why bother)

    PEACE

  20. McWars Says:

I'd rather the right hurry up and blow their load with the talking points while Biden is on the honeymoon, so Biden can return home and clean house.

Definitely a winning ticket, both for the Democratic Party and for our nation.

Republicans religiously believe in the death penalty. Most conservatives, if not all conservatives, religiously believe in the death penalty. Two thousand years ago, those people who crucified Jesus Christ religiously believed in the death penalty...and scourging.

Over the past eight years, similar-minded simple-minded conservatives, who religiously believe in the death penalty (and scourging/torture), have done everything they can to crucify our nation, cripple our liberal democracy, castigate our Constitution, destroy it. For eight long, long years, Bush, Cheney and all the conservative neo-con Republicans have been chanting "Death to America," driving up deficits, selling out our children's future, subverting the rule of law, promoting the "death penalty" for U.S. citizens (Katrina) and other men, women and children overseas (Iraq), while lying about all that they've been doing to destroy America, to crucify the "liberal" in our liberal democracy.

    I like Obama.

    I like Biden.

Definitely a winning ticket, both for the Democratic Party and for our nation.

  31. McWars Says:

    So THIS IS CHANGE?????????????????????????????

Well, the trash pickup of America would be scheduled at any time during a McCain presidency, so yes, it would be a positive change at any rate. As a failure in life, an understatement, you're afraid of progress, and therefore afraid of democrats.

May be repeating here, but Zed Lefflin has clearly forgotten the first Bush and his lovely wife, Babs.

  39. stjack Says:

i was a little surprised by the restraint showed in the article.

A senior Obama adviser, speaking on condition of anonymity, said his boss has expressed impatience with what he calls a “reverence” inside his campaign for his message of change and new politics. In other words, Obama is willing - even eager - to risk what got him this far if it gets him to the White House.

i mean, this is logically a non-sequitur, and dishonestly incendiary, but they didn't even take the opportunity to call him a nazi or the antichrist. where's the drama?

imho, all that paragraph means is that he's going to run an actual realistic campaign aimed at winning the presidency. i think biden will do a good job on that front, despite his faux pas in the past. hurrah, i say. could have been worse. gotta remember that the repubs are going to have an ad campaign prepared for every possible outcome of every decision Obama and Biden make from here on out, before he makes it.

  40. Patty Says:

a little OT and a few minutes delayed, but I had to stop laughing in order to type:

Fox News Somebody With a Microphone was just blasting into NBC's Andrea Mitchell, who -- six days ago -- brought up the Obama camp's dissatisfaction with the premise that John McCain was in a "cone of silence."
"Reporters are supposed to just say things; they're supposed to verify them first," the Fox guy said. ... of course, this brings up the "terrorist fist jab" incident, followed by Fox's daily modus operandi.
    Puh-leeze.
    Go, Obama/Biden!!!

  41. pete Says:

Is it not odd? I don't think anyone is surprised by the selection of Sen. Biden. He was high on my list of Presidential hopefuls before Sen. Obama came on and people are, at least, familiar with his name. Yet, by virtue of his very first statement, he's added an excitement to the race.

I'm not making any predictions but, I have a feeling that the desperate babble from the Reichwingers on Monday will be classic wingnuttery. And maybe, just maybe, the idiot psychochristian who hosts the show following the baseball games on local Reichradio will stop whining about Hillary confiscating his boat and truck to save the planet?

  42. Patty Says:

The Bidens and the Obamas on stage after the speeches today painted a lovely picture. Middle class clothing for the women, no suit coats for the men -- Biden's jabs at McCain are only the beginning -- I won't care if Biden makes a few verbal gaffes - as long as they are all against McSame.
Should McCain select Romney, they will have a huge PR job in convincing the average American that they "feel their pain."

Speaking of which -- where the heck is Bill Clinton?
I do not understand why they are in such low profile; her die-hards are planning stunts for the convention (I don't hear her telling them to knock it off) and Bill says he looks forward to campaigning for Barack -- well? I'm waiting!

the ONLY thing wrong about the event, and it was a biggie -
    not enough water...

i think it could be a story... they made everybody toss their bottled water... but you could buy big cups of water for $2... i passed a water stand because i couldn't get a bottle and didn't want to bother with a cup - which i think most everybody else felt the same... it didn't take long, in the hot sun to know that i had to go back and get some water - good people kept my spot in return for an extra cup... the press of the crowd made that trip near impossible... but i think it was a mistake to not allow bottled water - which is much more convenient to sip on and re-cap... many people were suffering... there was not enough water.

but, damn, it was a great event... at the spot where barack announced, the old capitol building...
i was there THAT day also - Feb 07, bitter cold... at least it was a georgeos sunny day...
today we were cheering the clouds! just glad it wasn't in the 90s or more!
Feb. and Aug. in Illinois - one extreme to the other!

  82. Beethoven Rules Says:

Maybe before Biden gets too vocal, he and Obama ought to figure out which one of them is running for president.

But with the latest revelation that the McCain women have a much tighter grasp on the finances than John or any of the other McCain men, wouldn't Cindy be the "real" president to John's "puppet"?

Biden's comment on the "good soldier" is a bit more telling now.

  85. clarkorwell Says:

I LOVED the comment by Mr. Biden about the 7 tables of McBush. It showed his humor, intelligence, and his knowledge about the issues that trouble us.

    rogerD Says:

The righties comeback is that Biden has been INSIDE seven houses before. Therefore, HE’s the elitist.

That is EXACTLY it. The wingnut brigade has worn that one out. If a Republican steals a car drives drunk and mows down ten people the GOP immediatly screams that Dems drive cars too.

  87. EugeneDebs Says:

I LOVE Media Matters even if they did ban me for being too mean to the conservatives

  88. tarazan Says:

McCain replying: "If you see a table with a 'tire gauge' on it, that's my table".

  89. Klem Kiddilehopper Says:

How about an ad showing Arlington Cemetery on Veterans Day, as each headstone has an American Flag placed in front of it, then a picure of Rommney's 5 son's, with Mitt's comment about "the boy's serving their country on the campaign trail!"

  90. one more clue Says:

Thank (several of) you for clearing that up about who actually owns McCain's seven (or whatever) houses. It was just that I had this mental image of the world's oldest American gigolo trying to get into the Whitehouse.

Here's a funny video that portrays John McCain's first day in office - should he win :-)

  92. Badger Says:

John McCain was interviewed by Katie Couric, and asked about his Inability to Recall the Number of Houses he Owned.

The Answer from this Candidate who does not want to politicize his Viet Nam War experience...

"There were many years when he had NO Kitchen Table at all."

When pressed, he suggested that he only lived in FOUR houses, The rest were investments.

  93. Nat Says:

“There were many years when he had NO Kitchen Table at all.”

    This is more reality-based:

"5 out of my 72 years (and counting) I didn't have a kitchen table."

Did Couric asked how many years was that?

  94. drago Says:

The McCain Social Security Plan: Marry Rich.
