McCain Surrogate Falsely Suggests McCain Does Not Want To Overturn Roe

In a new ad for John McCain, Debra Bartoshevich, a self-described “proud Hillary Clinton Democrat,” announces that she opposes Barack Obama and will vote for John McCain. At a press conference this afternoon, Bartoschevich made this puzzling statement:

Going back to 1999, John McCain did an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle saying that overturning Roe v. Wade would not make any sense, because then women would have to have illegal abortions.

Michael Scherer writes, “Was she going off message? Or are Republicans engaging in some cagey multi-messaging?” In 1999, McCain did indeed tell reporters that he “would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade.” But in recent years, McCain has repeatedly said Roe “should be overturned.” Here’s what his own campaign website says:

mac.gif

At the Saddleback Forum just a couple of weeks ago, McCain left no doubt about his position: “I have a 25-year pro-life record in the Congress, in the Senate. And as President of the United States, I will be a pro-life president and this presidency will have pro-life policies. That’s my commitment, that’s my commitment to you.”

Update McCain surrogate Carly Fiorina – who also attended today’s press conference with Bartoshevich – has misrepresented McCain’s position on choice in the past. “Newsweek magazine reported, she told women in Columbus, Ohio, that McCain ‘has never signed on to efforts to overturn Roe vs. Wade,’ the landmark Supreme Court decision confirming the right to abortion.”

It is way past time for government to get out of personal decisions, abortion, right to choose when to die, marriage. These choices should be voted on state by state by popular vote. I agree. But when Obama makes statements like “Abortion is never a good thing”, and “I think some restrictions of abortions make sense”, it’s hard for many people to get excited that this is going to happen under his watch. I get so sick of this ’swing to the right’ of male politicians in particular to try to get the ‘indie’ votes. It’s really damaging to the party and to the country to give lip service to this nonsense the way Obama has.

RHF, why would Obama go into the election saying things that potentially completely polarize him (as if he doesn’t have enough people trying to do that to him anyway)? Abortion is never a GOOD thing. It’s a difficult choice to make, and it isn’t something anyone looks forward to. That’s a politically expedient answer. “Some restrictions” in abortion DO make sense – like determining the time frame that so-called “abortion on demand” can occur. Do you think it would be feasible if a woman CHOSE an abortion in her third term because she and her husband lost their house? Not saying anyone WOULD do that, but there are restrictions that make sense that shouldn’t impact the overall right of a woman to choose.

  13. texaslady says:

I agree abortion is in many cases a sad situation and when it occurs some restrictions need to apply. So, what is the issue? The wisest choice is to obtain information and contraceptives to avoid pregnancy. This idea of abstinence only is a sad joke. Just doesn’t work people.

The Republican party has become the greatest threat to the continued existence of the United States at anytime in its history.

    1. The Republican party literally knows no bounds. They will lie, cheat, steal and do whatever else it takes to maintain and increase the power of the party.

    2. The Republicans have never hidden the fact that they are attempting to create a permanent Republican majority or one party state. We have seen the attempt to politicize all of government, to tie the wealthy and corporate interests to THE PARTY, and to destroy the Democratic party through the use of the executive as an organ of the party and the use of selective prosecution to gain political advantage.

    3. The Republicans have assisted in the corporate take over of the public airwaves and other media so that a clear right wing bias is now displayed in the majority of media outlets. We have seen the FCC used as a tool to further assist in consolidation of the media into the hands of a few.

No, it is time to go after these people and expose McCain and others for the human dung that they are. It is time for the people to take back the country. It is time for all Democrats and progressives to understand that this is war.

How? Learn from the Shit Head Republicans. Organize boycotts, flood papers and networks with protests, go after the sponsors. How the hell do you think that they ended up creating the myth of liberal bias. The same tactics will work to expose the truth.

    good_golly7 Says:
McCain’s stance is clear. He will appoint judges that he hopes will not legislate from the bench

Only problem is, “legislate from the bench” is nothing more than a code word for “decisions we don’t like”.

Case in point: the California Supreme Court decision that threw out the “marriage is between a man and a woman” ballot initiative.

McSame gave that as an example of “legislating from the bench”. This just shows McSame has no understanding of the case, or its interpretation of the state Constitution:

The majority opinion, by Chief Justice Ronald M. George, declared that any law that discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation will from this point on be constitutionally suspect in California in the same way as laws that discriminate by race or gender, making the state’s high court the first in the nation to adopt such a stringent standard.

The decision was a bold surprise from a moderately conservative, Republican-dominated court that legal scholars have long dubbed “cautious,” and experts said it was likely to influence other courts around the country.

“Strict constructionist” is code-word crap that means less than the word of any Republican.

    good_golly7,

Wayne answered my question in post #31. McCain plans to nominate judges that will overturn Roe v Wade. After that it will be left up to the individual states.

  31. realist says:

This is from an interesting Slate story in 2005, two days after the Roe v. Wade anniversary:

Abortion is “a sad, even tragic choice to many, many women,” said Clinton. Then she went further: “There is no reason why government cannot do more to educate and inform and provide assistance so that the choice guaranteed under our constitution either does not ever have to be exercised or only in very rare circumstances.”

Does not ever have to be exercised. I searched Google and Nexis for parts of that sentence tonight and got no hits. Is the press corps asleep? Hillary Clinton just endorsed a goal I’ve never heard a pro-choice leader endorse. Not safe, legal, and rare. Safe, legal, and never.

Once you embrace that truth — that the ideal number of abortions is zero — voters open their ears.

  32. Tweedster says:

    good_golly7 Says:

The continual sexism raised against Hillary and particularly her female followers is exactly why Obama (and you) are not making any friends or influencing any people. The reality is that Obama has not addressed many of the issues these voters care about yet and even seems to be hostile to some of them. So instead of just dismissing them as ’scorned women’ and making sexist remarks like this. It’s time for you and Obama to actually address the platform issues and sexism that is causing this backlash. Otherwise the Democrats will do what the Democrats do too often and sabotage ourselves out of yet another election…

For your information, I’m almost 61 years old. I experienced alot of “sexism” in my life, but I didn’t whine about it. I punched a boss out once who grabbed my breast, and threatened to sue a bank loan office who didn’t want to give me an $800 loan for a used car because I wasn’t married. The boss didn’t fire me and I got the loan. Those are only two of many examples I could give you. I also had an abortion 23 years ago, which I still wish I hadn’t had to do. But felt then, and still do, that I had no choice. So don’t you dare call me sexist!

What I strongly object to is this meme from the Clinton supporters that “She and her supporters weren’t respected.” It’s an extremely weak and whiny position to take, and as far as I’m concerned, makes women look like wimps. If you can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen!!

How can one claim to be in favor of human rights, yet not be willing to answer the question, “when do human rights begin?”

    F**KING HYPOCRITES!

    (there, fixed it for you)

So, please tell me. When do human rights begin, and why?

    Gigi, you gigantic fu(king doosh.

You have asked this question dozens of times in the past couple of weeks, and gotten several answers. I told you I would answer, as soon as you addressed the question I put to you, and you have refused to answer it. I repeated it above in post 25, but to save you the trouble, I’ll reiterate it here:

given that you would define the deliberate termination of a pregnancy as abortion, how you would you propose treating a woman who might otherwise get a legal abortion, but instead suffers a miscarriage, given the possibility that she took steps to induce said miscarriage?

Wouldn’t that be murder under your rules?

How would you deal with the perpetrator?

All you have to do is answer it.

    Why won’t you answer it?

  69. Frosty Cupcake says:

“Rights” begin at conception and end at birth. Easy peasy for the GOP.

  70. ralph the wonder llama says:

TK, thanks for the effort, but sending me links from “priestsforlife.com” and insisting that “Yes, live birth abortions are a problem” doesn’t answer the specific, fact-based question I put to you.

  71. Badger says:

John McCain’s Website doesn’t say Roe v. Wade SHOULD be overturned…it says Roe v. Wade MUST be overturned.

I agree with previous posters…the Republicans had their OPPORTUNITY, when they controlled Congress and the Presidency…and not only did Abortions NOT GO Down, but they didn’t even propose legislation to overturn Roe v. Wade.

    Republicans want the ISSUE.

Here’s what Obama should do. Agree that Abortions are Never a Good thing. Unwaveringly support Roe v. Wade

AND…set as his GOAL , the yearly Reduction in the Number of Abortions for EVERY Year of his presidency…by lowereing the number of UNINTENDED Pregnancies through EDUCATION, Easy access to birth control , HEALTHCARE for ALL, and Progressive Adoption Policies.

Not by Overturning Roe.v. Wade and returning to Back alley Abortions and the COATHANGER.

How is it that the first 2 years of Bush provided more abortions than the first 2 years of Clinton?

A bigger question, why did Bush help his girlfriend get an abortion in 1970? In 1970 abortions were illegal in Texas, yet the Bush family arranged it.

With all due respect, the question is poorly worded. Nonetheless, my answer is simple. I suggest allowing the legislatures of each invididual state to debate and decide on such issues.

Perhaps it is poorly worded. What do you find confusing? Perhaps I could clear it up for you.

But to be clear: I didn’t ask you to whom you would give jurisdiction.

I asked you how you would deal with this possibility if your rules were in place.

You have no problem opining that “Human rights start in the womb”, so why the shyness about laying out your opinion on what to do with sneaky baby-murdering mothers in such a circumstance?

I find your reticence a bit cowardly.

  74. Badger says:

Here is my problem with letting the STATES Decide:

from Anna Quindlen’s excellent article in Newsweek:
    http://www.newsweek.com/id/48339?tid=relatedcl

There is now only a single abortion clinic in Mississippi. Once there were seven. There are nearly 3 million people living in the state. No other state with only one abortion clinic has as many residents. Mississippi has enacted every restriction on abortion possible within the limits set by the Supreme Court.

In 2000, researchers published a study of the effects of the waiting period. It showed that the number of later abortions INCREASED SHARPLY among Mississippi residents who relied on local clinics but not among those able to travel to neighboring states. The study showed that after the waiting period went into effect the number of second-trimester procedures in the state ROSE from 7.5 percent of all abortions to 11.5 percent.

    good_golly7 Says:
O.k. Ralph I’ve answered your question. Now, will you answer mine, or will you continue to dodge it?

Progressives claim to be in favor of human rights. When do human rights begin, and why?

As I pointed out above, Gigi, no, you haven’t answered my question. You made up a different question and answered THAT as if it had been the one I asked.

Are conservatives not in favor of human rights?

  76. ralph the wonder llama says:

Badger, the flip side of your post equation is Mississippi’s disturbing corresponding growth in infant mortality.

More evidence that Republicans confer “human rights” from conception until birth, and then, you’re on your own, kid.

  77. Leftside Annie says:

Tell ya what, goony – WHEN YOU CAN GET PREGNANT, you can choose.

    Until then, STFU.

  78. DRxJ says:

Okay, here’s a brain teaser for good_goony 7.0, but since she’s ignoring me, I’ll make it for everyone.
My wife, on our trip to her brother’s wedding this past weekend, was just a little concerned as she was a few days late (she had her “visitor” while we were in Erie, thank goodness). But, it got me thinking. Because she has had 4 kids via c-section, and her interior uterine wall is scarred, the doctors recommended we no longer have anymore kids. Let’s take this one step further, let’s say her condition is life threatening with bearing one more child. Let’s say she became pregnant.
What should we do? Terminate the developing embryonic cells, or do we take the chance of 4 or 5 kids being raised without their mother?
Intersting, eh? Especially the good_goony7.0 response.

  79. Frosty Cupcake says:

I would like to second Annie’s “STFU”.

    Thanks.

  80. ralph the wonder llama says:

I would like to see Annie’s “STFU” motion passed, but only after Gigi answers my question.

    THEN she can STFU.

And what kind of “democracy” will we have when the govt can tell nothing but lies ?

Its a question of Obama’s judgement. Regarding the BAIPA act, Obama voted not to provide care for babies who were born alive after a failed abortion. Obama’s vote is coming home, to roost.

You, like most trolls, are dishonest to a fault. Obama voted against one version of the bill because it had a provision he and many others objected to. Once that provision was removed, he then voted for the bill. His vote will only come home to roost with dishonest right wingers like you who would never vote for him in the first place.

  85. BlueRidge says:

I would like to know by what process or authority the SCOTUS has to ‘overturn’ an amendment to the constitution. The 18th amendment was repealed by the 21st; which I believe had to be ratified by popular vote garnering 35% of the states. Someone please explain to me how this process outlined in the constitution of the USA may be skirted by the SCOTUS. Is there a lawyer out there that can answer this, please?

  86. texaslady says:

Mccain was a weekend dad coming home weekends only per Cindy. So, pretty easy to appease the right to lifers. Just what does he have experience in, never paid a bill, lived with a budget, had servants and staff to pick up his $540 pair of shoes. He has skated on the coatails of dad, wife and friends. Oh, did I mention he was 5th from the bottom of a class of 899. WE NEED INTELLIGENCE IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

A lying corporatist raider responsible for 18,000 Americans losing well-paying grey and white-collar jobs and destroying two large companies before getting dumped is running her game with women.

All any of them have to do to know Carly Fiorina is lying in their faces is to go to the McCain site and see for themselves. That’s how stupid Carly Fiorina thinks people are.

  89. 49erDem says:

Texas Lady: “Just what does he have experience in, never paid a bill, lived with a budget, had servants and staff to pick up his $540 pair of shoes.”

Times are tough for the McCain family. Records show their budget for servants went from $178K in 2006 to about $240K in 2007. A McCain spokesperson said it was because they needed more personnel because they had more houses, not that they were paying people more – glad they cleared that up!

Meanwhile, over at The National Review, they’re hoppin’ mad about that $200K salary Michelle Obama got. It had to be special favors from Illinois legislator Barak Obama. No way would anyone just decide to give a graduate of Harvard Law School $200K per year, right?

  90. 49erDem says:

DrXJ: “What should we do? Terminate the developing embryonic cells, or do we take the chance of 4 or 5 kids being raised without their mother?”

The logical conclusion, if we lived in a world crafted by right-wing religious fanatics, would be that she would be remanded to a government “birthing center” where she would be forced to carry a baby to term. I’m guessing there would be no government compensation if you ended up having to take care of your 4 or 5 kids by yourself without a Mother.

Whereas Obama was obviously floundering and tap dancing and said some nonsense about it being above his pay grade to answer the question specifically. Then he went on to lie about his immoral position on late term, born-alive “botched” abortions. It was so pathetic.

You are so stupid it must hurt. So ignorant I dont know how you feed yourself. To the congenitally ignorant like YOU a thoughtful answer anything that wont fit on a bumper sticker is tap dancing instead of aknowleging the complexities. Studies say 18,000 lives would be saved every year in the US by switching to what two-thirds of Americans want: single-payer healthcare.
Sociologists say the main reason for the big drop in crime under Clinton was due to Roe v Wade.
One in eight Iraqi children now die before the age of five, a 35% increase since our invasion. A major cause of deaths before our invasion was our sanctions. Sec of State Madeliene Albright said the deaths of 500,000 children caused by our sanctions was worth it.
One in four Afghanis now die before the age of five.
While we were killing 3.2 million Vietnamese, I never heard any pro-lifers complain.
