The Rocky Mountain News reports that the Secret Service, ATF, and the U.S. Attorney’s office are investigating a possible plot to assassinate Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL). Details of the efforts by the Denver-area police so far:
Aurora police arrested a longtime drug user Sunday afternoon during a routine traffic stop where the man was seen “weaving,” sources said. Two possible other accomplices also were arrested, according to police. Police found four weapons, including two rifles and two handguns, in a rented pickup.
That arrest then led authorities to a second man staying at the Cherry Creek Hotel at 600 South Colorado Blvd in Glendale. When authorities knocked on the man’s door, they say he jumped out of his sixth floor window, landing on an awning and running from the scene. They say they soon found him with a broken ankle. He too was arrested. [...]
Police found a rifle in the man’s pickup and methamphetamine. The man allegedly made comments about Sen. Obama, but sources wouldn’t say what they were. It was enough, however, to make police believe the man might have been plotting to somehow harm Obama.
Well, now we know what good_golly and daryll have been up to.
Three hots and a cot for them now and the foreseeable future.
August 25th, 2008 at 9:53 pmYeah, Darryl said a couple of days ago that he would “not allow Hussein Obama to become president”
August 25th, 2008 at 10:00 pmI was in Boulder this weekend, flew back to New York today, and the local news mentioned last night this guy was arrested with guns, nothing about Obama. But what they did say was he was from Wyoming, a right wing freak show state (obviously not everyone there, apologies to Wyoming progressives) that produced Cheney.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:03 pmFrankly, it just sounds like a couple of drug pushers to me. Guns and meth. Having lived in Denver for the majority of my life, I also wouldn’t be surprised if the Aurora police dept. (suburb of Denver) there isn’t trying to get a little publicity for themselves.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:06 pmLets not jump to conclusions here people. Let the Law Enforcement people at the State and Federal levels do their jobs.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:07 pmUpdateNote to our readers: In case you are wondering why we aren’t covering more of the convention, please keep in mind that we are restricted as to what types of content we can publish due to our 501(c)(4) tax status. We will bring you as much as we are legally allowed to.
Any chance of a hint as to what that might be…?
August 25th, 2008 at 10:08 pmI was in Springfield Saturday and have to say the Secret Service people are amazing. You don’t even notice them and then somebody does something strange and they swarm in from all over. It’s great to know they’re looking out for Obama because there are plenty of angry right wingers out there as witnessed by the trolls here.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:09 pmI think their designation (the (4) ) means that they can’t be seen as advocating for a political party. If thats the case, then it explains why they are restricted.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:11 pmI have to check that Zooey, I’m only versed with the 501(c) rules were it concerns performing arts groups Not so sure about the other rules.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:13 pmREALLY Cal??? someone actually said a couple of days ago that he would “not allow Hussein Obama to become president”
if so, this should have been reported to the TP staff.
…
i hope TP can find a way to highlight the appearance of ted kennedy at the convention…
caroline’s video tribute and then his speech – outstanding…
August 25th, 2008 at 10:14 pmvery emotional… heartwarming and inspirational!
Hi katy, it was very touching and that video was beautiful. Ted Kennedy looked great tonight though he’s a trooper.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:19 pmA quick definition from the IRS states that 501(c)4s are “Organized for the benefit of the Community or the Social Welfare of the Community” How that restricts TP, I don’t know but apparently it does.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:21 pmas for the yahoos and the “possible plot” – like cockroaches, you see one, there are more hiding…
tremendous kudos to law enforcement and investigtive personel -
do what you gotta do…
at the OBAMA-BIDEN event in springfield on saturday, the security was obvious and pervasive… and everybody appreciated it… and everybody knew why…
August 25th, 2008 at 10:24 pmThanks, Jim. :)
I guess it just means they can post bad stuff about McCain, and little if any good stuff (or even bad stuff) about Obama.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:25 pmOkay, time to watch Michelle.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:39 pmI hope the Low Information Voters turned over from Monday Night Football long enough to hear this.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:50 pmGreat F—ing speech.
August 25th, 2008 at 10:56 pmWe need a persistent President…!
ha ha
Best line I’ve ever heard from Obama. He has QUITE the sense of humor. Unlike Little Boots, who is accustomed to CANNED laughter in response…
August 25th, 2008 at 10:58 pmMichelle melted Juan Williams’ heart, maybe even softened Britt Humes’. Bill Kristol remains unmoved, surprise surprise.
August 25th, 2008 at 11:03 pmw o w.
“case, i think, closed” said keith o. when michelle finished.
and again, after barack spoke with michelle and the girls and the crowd via closed circuit.
fantastic… and again, emotional and inspiring…
(even tweety sounds like he might cry!)
and across the bottom of the screen, the cyron:
“cindy mccain is on her way to the country of georgia to assess the civilian casualties”
WTF???
sorry, lady, you can’t hold a candle to michelle.
no contest.
August 25th, 2008 at 11:04 pmhey, shane – you make a good point…
i stated how obvious the law enforcement was in springfield on saturday… what i DIDN’T notice were secret service…
but i knew they were there!
August 25th, 2008 at 11:08 pmIsn’t it “presumptuous” for a Presidential candidate to send his wife to a war zone?
August 25th, 2008 at 11:11 pmMichelle Obama was outstanding. An A+. Over all after a slow start I gave night one a B. It was not a great start but Kennedy was great, Leech and McCaskill were fine and Michelle Obama was outstanding.
August 25th, 2008 at 11:11 pmhi shayne!
sorry… i’m just now reading the comments, after my first…
how ’bout that 1/2 a head of hair! and he still looked great!
well, all things considered!
i don’t pray much, but i’m praying that he can keep that promise to be there in january!
how great will THAT be??!?!!!

Maybe that thing with Vicky Iseman (?) isn’t really over after all…

August 25th, 2008 at 11:15 pmGreat speech by Michelle! Topped off by the little girls coming out on the stage and then Barack on the screen talking to them and us all. Truly great. I also really loved the Ted Kennedy video and was so enormously pleased he was able to appear and give his speech. I know it was touch and go, so great for him. I also really enjoyed the Jimmy Carter video, but was sorry he wasn’t invited to speak as well. I watched most of the opening night of the convention on C-Span so also saw some of the other speakers. Jessie Jackson, Jr. was also inspiring. I think we’ll see a good deal more of him in the future.
Just an aside, saw a crawl on MSNBC that the Denver Police sprayed protesters with pepper spray. Didn’t say why, of course.
August 25th, 2008 at 11:18 pmCan I just say I love Michelle? And how perfect that they ended her speech with Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”!
PEACE
August 25th, 2008 at 11:18 pmMichael ? on PBS said: “…What was important was in conveying what kind of a human being Barack Obama is. This is a real family. She loves her husband, he loves her. These daughters are these elegant, delightful loving kids. You can’t fake that kind of stuff.”
August 25th, 2008 at 11:20 pmThe guys at PBS were very enthusiastic about Michelle Obama and the kids!
Makes me wonder… last week, Arizona Barbie snapped like a twig after a vigorous handshake, and now McStain sends her into a war zone?
Absolutely hilarious image you created. Thanks for the hearty laugh!!

Probably just hoping. With a face like hers she could stop the war with one look.
August 25th, 2008 at 11:23 pmObama made the Jerusalem Post:
Barack Obama declared Monday that the world must press Iran through sanctions and diplomacy to stop its nuclear program, so that Israel does not feel its “back is against the wall” and that it therefore has no choice but to attack.
This is a setup. The JP reported diplomacy will bog down due to the Russia-Georgia conflict. The U.S. and Israel supplied Georgia with weapons and training.
Dead diplomacy = Israeli attack, at least according to Barack Obama.
Also, Cheney will head to Georgia after sliming the Repugnicant National Convention.
August 25th, 2008 at 11:24 pmjeez… look what i found on the google search page (looking for the story about cindy’s wrist “accident” that i saw mentioned at C&L)… sorry if it conjurs up bad memories… it’s probably still around, though not sure which guise this time… remember this one?

August 25th, 2008 at 11:31 pmAnother thing. I swear I saw Paul Wolfowitz in the audience at the convention tonight (on C-Span). Not looking very happy either. I saw him when they panned the audience during Michelle’s speech.
August 25th, 2008 at 11:35 pmWhat, neocon Wolfowitz at the DNC. The State Department employee is charged with Controlling WMD’s.
Barack Obama did support the neocon line with his remark at an Iowa townhall meeting. He said Israel might be forced to attack Iran (if diplomacy stalls).
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1015132.html
Guess what, diplomacy stalled with the Russia-Georgia conflict. Paul Wolfowitz might get his neocon war, after all.

All of the above.
State of the Division: Barack Obama did support the neocon line with his remark at an Iowa townhall meeting. He said Israel might be forced to attack Iran (if diplomacy stalls).
Stating the likelihood of something happening if diplomacy fails is NOT supporting the idea. It IS a statement of fact as well as a warning.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:08 amBTW, McCaskill’s speech was excellent.
August 26th, 2008 at 12:11 amKennedy’s speech was soaring and thrilling.
Michelle’s speech was perfect; warm, sensitive, cheerful, encouraging, and a grand slam home run!
What will Cindy McCain talk about?
August 26th, 2008 at 12:14 amHow she stole her husband from another woman?
Her convicted felon,father?
Her drug addiction?
How she ostracized her half sisters?
katy, one lady saw somebody had water bottles and all of a sudden there were secret service guys swarming in. Then some weird looking guy in a bike helmet with a big backpack showed up and he was surrounded.

August 26th, 2008 at 12:41 amIn 1948, Jim and Eugene Hensley were indicted for falsifying liquor records to conceal illegal distribution of whiskey against post-war rationing regulations. Both men were convicted in U.S. District Court on federal charges of conspiracy and Jim Hensley was also convicted on seven counts of filing false liquor records. While Eugene was sentenced to one year in federal prison, Jim received a six-month suspended sentence.
In 1981, Hensley hired his new son-in-law, John McCain, as Vice President of Public Relations for Hensley & Company. It was Hensley’s money and influential ties throughout the state of Arizona that helped McCain win his first campaign for the U.S. Senate.
John McCain says he is proud of his father in law. He would be.

August 26th, 2008 at 12:56 amI have been at the convention or rather walking around Denver for two days. I give the Denver Police credit for using restraint. Today for instance, two protesters were dressed in black (with their faces covered Arab style), standing on a corner with a huge sign reading “Look around this is what a Police State looks like”. They were right smack in front of several cops and were taunting the cops. What did the cops do, they just pasted on big smiles and didn’t say a word. Then these social misfits wandered over to the MSNBC set and tried the same thing with the crowd, which weren’t as nice as the cops. Lots of shouting and screaming back and forth before the creeps departed.
Another group, Re-Create 68 wants conflict. They have tested the police since yesterday. Denver has made it very clear that protests must be confined to certain areas, Re-Create 68 isn’t happy about this and has tried on at least two previous times to push the limits. They got arrested tonight because they refused requests to disperse. I say good, these people are in Denver for one reason and one reason only, to create conflict. I don’t want my city to be ripped apart by civil disobedience.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:02 amUm. I wasn’t there but, there is quite a difference between “civil disobedience” and “ripping a city apart”. “Ripping a city apart” would be called vandalism or rioting. I have not seen any reports which define the protesters behavior in those terms.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:13 amWell. That’s all for me tonight.
G’night good people.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:14 amYou too trolls.
I don’t want to put on a tin foil hat or anything, but do we really think Daryl and Bubba would be able to put a “plan” together? Come on! Who heired these guys, really. As far as letting the cops do their work…yeah just like with Bobby Kennedy, John Lennon, Martin Luther King, etc, etc, etc, and many more recent plan crashes etc. yeah, right! Dream on

August 26th, 2008 at 1:31 amSorry,
I meant to say, at least in America, they provide protesters a “FREE SPEECH ZONE” fenced off from the American Tiananmen Square to protect the Nationalists from opinions.
.
August 26th, 2008 at 1:33 amaquarius2 – Below is the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Strangely enough, I don’t see any indication that the government has the right to confine protests to “certain areas.” I’d also like to point out that without civil disobedience, we wouldn’t be the United States of America. We’d still be colonies of England. The protesters weren’t violent, even if they were disrespectful to the authorities. Freedom of speech is NOT yet illegal in this country, but with people like you as citizens, it well may become so. “Land of the free and home of the brave,” indeed.
Bill of Rights
Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

August 26th, 2008 at 7:51 amSadly, this could be expected. There is a subtle agitation just under the surface of Limpball’s and Little Seanie’s rants these days — it’s called racism. And it means that Joe Biden will be only one heartbeat and one redneck away from the presidency.
August 26th, 2008 at 8:16 amWhat is really interesting about this is, The Times and various European newspapers, for that matter have this story as N E W S (sic). If you look at CNN and the other US media, nobody seems to care much. When McCain got sent some white powder, however, frantic reporting all over the place. This time, just four drug abusing hillbillys that’s all, no sweat. The point is: Chapman and Hinckley haven’t been rocket scientists either and succeeded in doing much damage. I am definitely not an alarmist, but this is assymetric reporting.

I believe in freedom of speech, I also believe in rules and laws established to maintain a peaceful society. Where does one begin and one end?? There were dozens of minor protests all over the city yesterday, there were no arrests, no conflicts and freedom of speech was not hampered by Denver. RE-Create 68 wants conflict, wants publicity. Their group falls into the same category as the Phelps family.

August 26th, 2008 at 12:41 pmSo because someone had some drugs and guns in their car and muttered something about Obama, this = assassination attempt?

August 26th, 2008 at 1:22 pmthe drugs have nothing to do with the assassination attempt al, it’s the guns the bulletproof vests, the detailed plans etc, that make it an assassintaion attempt.
