CNN Thinks Only The Top Five Percent Of America’s Income Earners Count

In an interview with former NBA star Charles Barkley today, CNN host Wolf Blitzer discussed the respective tax plans being offered by Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain. This is the on-screen graphic that CNN displayed during the interview, which the network represented as the “average tax bill change”:

cnn.jpg

The graphic above only displays the “average tax change” on incomes above $161,000 – the top five percent of income earners in the nation. The graphic is therefore deceptive and misleading, as it suggests that McCain’s tax plan offers a greater benefit than Obama’s. In reality, for most Americans, Obama’s tax plan would offer three times the benefit.

Here’s the impact of McCain and Obama’s tax plan on incomes below $161,000 – the part that CNN left out:

  MCCAIN OBAMA
Income Avg. tax bill Avg. tax bill
$112K-$161K -$2,614 -$2,204
$66K-$112K -$1,009 -$1,290
$38K-$66K -$319 -$1,042
$19K-$38K -$113 -$892
Under $19K -$19 -$567

Using his deceptive chart, Blizter tried – but failed – to get Barkley to voice his opposition to an increase in taxes on the wealthiest Americans to pay for national priorities:

BLITZER: If Obama has his way, you would spend another $701,885 in taxes. $700,000 above and beyond – you pay a lot of taxes right now if you’re making millions of dollars a year as you are. How do you feel about that?

BARKLEY: Well, I think that if you’re rich — I thank God I’ve been very successful — if you’re rich, you’re always going to be rich. If we pay more in taxes, I got no problem with that. If you’re making that kind of money, a couple hundred thousand dollars here or there are not going to change your life.

Let’s be realistic. I’ve been very fortunate and blessed. I did a great job of saving my money. But I got no problem if I’m making that type of money, paying more in taxes to be honest with you.

Watch it:

Update "Barack Obama said he plans to focus on the struggles of middle-class Americans, including their tax burden, in his Thursday night speech accepting the Democratic nomination for president."

Not sure how a graphic showing McFiveAndaHalfYears offering a quartermil+ tax break to people earning over $2.9 mil a year helps the Republicans but the concept of asking Sir Charles about it is priceless. I assume they will balance this out by asking Michael Jordan to assess the candidates’ energy plans.

  4. j swift says:

Serves him right, wtf was he asking Charles Barkley about this anyway.

Since when does being a sports star and having the almost obligatory money that goes with it have anything to do with being an expert on the tax policy of Presidential candidates.

So it’s now obvious Blitzer demeans, even hates anyone earning under $161,000 a year, and panders to the rich. Why does Blitzer hate middle class & poor Americans? Someone needs to confront him with this. With this garbage from Blitzer, plus the CNN innuendo this morning– “did Michelle Obama really mean what she said??” CNN is revealing itself to be REpub friendly, McCain friendly, and totally out of touch with most Americans. Sad to see CNN go down the tubes like this, trying to be another Fox, the epitome of trash opinionated lies.

  23. tanglewood says:

CNN’s coverage has been abyssmal–it is unwatchable to me. I have found PBS with Jim Lehrer and Mark Shields to be fair and informative. MSNBC is like an insane asylum and all the anchors (except Rachel and Keith) have major issues! Talk about fragile egos.

  24. stateofthedivision says:

I highly recommend George Lakoff’s latest book. He contrasts the Strict Father model Republican Party vs. the Nurturing Parent Democratic Party.

Those who want the illusion of firm structure and strict rules go for the Republicans, regardless of family income. If they’re poor they may ended up hating themselves, as effort always equates into success and poor results are due to individual failings. As the Strict Father knows how to get his way, Republicans understand marketing. They know how to get their message across.

George encourages Democrats to use empathy and collaboration to address problems systemically. He clearly calls for new frames, new narratives to engage the public. There’s much more to his message, well worth checking out.

My only problem with more taxes is more wasteful spending. Which the government is more than capable of performing this task with ease.

If the Government ran health care if would be a disaster in the area of the Titanic or the Great Flood.

I wish one candidate would introduce a flat tax. Everyone pays 10%. All corporations would pay 15%.

But No we have a tax system they can not even understand, Sounds like a great idea to give them more of are money and let them decide what they should spend it on, Like maybe $6000.00 Toilet seats.

  26. pete says:

I’ll second the recommendation of PBS, tanglewood. Personally, I don’t subscribe to cable so it’s my main tv news source anyway. Heck! Even that condescending gasbag Brooks can sound, relatively, rational when he’s on with Lehrer.

  27. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Good for Charles Barkley. That must have been frustrating for poor Blitzer. It’s too bad that Barkley didn’t ask where the rest of the taxpaying citizens were.

Besides, many of the people in their tax bracket pay no tax at all because of all the income sheltering schemes they are involved in. Just like the 63% of corporations that pay no income tax. Think of what we could do with all the money we are NOT collecting from corporations.

Actually I read something recently that if corporations paid the same tax now they paid in the 60’s (when they were doing quite well and growing by leaps and bounds), we could pay off the national debt in a little more than a year. I wonder why the Democrats don’t hammer on how little the corporations pay in taxes. McCain likes to say that corporations take their business over seas because they are taxed to death here. Then how can he account for the 65% of corporations who pay no taxes.

  32. AngryOne says:

Oh really. Then how can you account for the fact that Medicare is run with 5% overhead and the for-profit health insurance companies run with a 50% overhead? Also, do you hear our Senators and Congress people complaining about their health care? No? It’s government run health care.

    Joewarmer, here’s a hint;

we have plenty of genuine right-wing trolls who are more than capable of making their side look foolish.

We don’t need your amateurish efforts to discredit them.

  37. pete says:

I really wish this new troll would get with the program.

First of all, troll, it’s kind of stupid to assume a program which hasn’t reached a final configuration is a “disaster”. Such an assumption means that one would reject a “perfect” plan. Also stupid.

Second. It’s funny you should use the example of the “$6,000.00 toilet seat” as an example since, like most trollish gibberish, that particular story was debunked. The “toilet seat” in question was a component of a bathroom for a zero gee environment.

The problem with a bathroom in a space vehicle is that if it doesn’t work, everybody dies and the space vehicle crashes or carries the frozen crew for all eternity. So, a seemingly “wasteful” expenditure is really nothing of the sort.

That being said, there are plenty of examples of government waste. And, just off the top of my head, I would offer Social Security as an example of a competently designed government service. Despite the worst efforts of generations of greedy, incompetent, politicians; it continues to provide it’s services.

Let’s start by abolishing the Dept. of Homeland Security and Bush Jr’s Faith-Based Initiatives office & personnel, places where corruption, mismanagement and spectacular incompetence reign supreme.

And since corruption is something the Bush Jr Administration doesn’t worry about when it comes to raping the taxpayers and US treasury, let’s also focus on every single “no bid” contract this Administration has signed.

No doubt, you’ll favor aggressive criminal sanctions against the war profiteers and those who profited off of the Katrina response, but have so few positive results to show for their malignant responses.

  54. mjvpi says:

The problem with all of these charts is that they don’t reflect what is happening to the national debt. We should look at that as if each citizen owes a part of it. Tax “breaks” are, in essence, borrowed money. During eight years of Bush Tax breaks, my share of the national debt went up $20,000. My family nets $75,000 a year. A family of 4 had a debt increase of $80,000. In our tax bracket, looking at it from the stand point of my children’s generation and as a middle class American, all of these tax cuts are BS in terms of the future. Taxes are our responsibility as citizens. I’m tired of them being used as a false statement of how much a candidate loves us. Give me some reality please!

  58. aarrgghh says:

poor wolfie needs to get himself some new research monkeys. otherwise he should have known better than to ask charles barkley of all people about republicans and the economy — and not because barkley ain’t no guru:

july 20, 2006 — the reverb is still echoing over dan quayle’s walkout in the middle of a john mellencamp concert in lake tahoe last weekend. the singer-songwriter introduced his tune “wall talk” by announcing, “this next one is for all the poor people who’ve been ignored by the current administration.” as quayle exited, the former veep explained, “i didn’t appreciate the comment, and besides, i didn’t think the show was very good.” but mellencamp said he couldn’t care less that quayle got his knickers in a twist: “i certainly wouldn’t have changed a word.” nba hall of famer charles barkley backed mellencamp, saying, “he’s right.” while that may sound odd coming from a former conservative, barkley told a local reporter, “i was a republican — until they lost their minds.” quayle, known for his great golf game, served as veep under president bush’s father from 1989-’93.

  59. aarrgghh says:

    more from barkley:

suprisingly, long-time conservative and nba star charles barkley, who for years has suggested he may run for alabama governor as a republican, took mellencamp’s side:

“he’s right,” charles barkley said of mellencamp. “the word conservative means discriminatory practically. it’s a form of political discrimination. [conservatives are] against gay marriage and for a war that makes no sense. a war that was based on faulty intelligence. that’s all they ever talk about. that and immigration. another discriminatory argument for political gain.”

barkley’s shift against conservatism may also have something to do with his interest in poverty. “my no. 1 priority is to help poor people,” barkley has said. “in this country, 90% of the money is controlled by 10% of the people, and that’s not right.”
