Brooks: ‘Most of the delegates’ at the DNC sound like ‘a North Korean pep rally.’

On the PBS Newshour this evening, New York Times columnist David Brooks opined about the possibility of “unity at the Democratic National convention, claiming that while there are vocal supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) at the convention, “most of the delegates here have been fed these talking points here and they sound like a North Korean pep rally.” Watch it:

Yeah, and all those republibots at the repub 04 convention spontaneously showed up with flip flops and purple heart bandaids. Brooks makes friedman sound intelligent and thoughtful and makes kristol seem edgy by comparison.

Oh, Bobo, don't worry - most of the delegates at the Rethuglican convention will sound like a North Korea morgue.

They call it the enthusiasm gap. Or the senility gap.

  20. singe_101 Says:

Nothing says North Korea like diversity, opposition, a Katrina retrospective and call to action, benediction, and rallying against the executive.

Now when the GOP drones are worked into a frenzy about drilling and killing, hypocracy and idiocracy, they're just patriotic.

It's like their military health care plan is to just get every GOP-backer in gov't like Johnny Deranged.

  21. livelongandprosper Says:

And you don’t get that there are HILLARY supporters

Go for it. Support Hillary. I'm sure she will need some support for whatever she does next year. Everybody needs support.

At this point in American History, the Republicans must be shown the door. If you are saying that there are Hillary supporters that will vote for the Republicans, then THEY don't get it and are behaving like Republicans and so, go... go vote for McCain. But please remember, we (well at least I) support proper governance, and that has been missing for too long.

  22. Roket Says:

The Republic plants, a.k.a. PUMA, are not having the effect that the right wing was hoping for. This of course does not prevent them from reporting their own personal wishes as news. It’s getting pretty obvious that they are reduced to creating news that doesn’t even exist.

  23. ConcernedParent Says:

Why does anyone even pay attention to Brooks, he has never said anything remotely intelligent. Oh wait, now i see why repugs love him.

  24. pete Says:

I've said it before. Even when he tries to "tone it down" for PBS, he's a condescending gasbag. I'll have to catch the replay on local TV to see what else he said.

  25. Game of Life Says:

    HAHAHAHAHA

repugs are so pissed about the dems win they are loosing it even more. I LOVE IT.

  26. pete Says:

    Very true, livelongandprosper.

And I might add that the issues facing our country are not "Right/Left" issues. They are issues of right and wrong.

Historically, I don't give a rip about the letter after a politician's name. But the modern GOP has supported bad policy, in virtual lockstep, for so long that they need a good spanking, to put it lightly.

Balance be damned. They need to be thwarted and have their legacy reversed.

  27. Mr. Evil Says:

Well, Mr. Brooks, since you're such an expert on all things North Korean, why don't you explain to us how the convention qualifies. I'm so sick of republicans demonizing, at the very minimum, half of the American people. We're concerned, considerate, thoughtful, patriotic, hard working and love this country as what the founders intended it to be. But, since we're not boot-licking, brain-dead, automatons in subserviance to you and your masters, you consider us to be something less than a true citizen. I'd rather be anything than whatever it is that you are. And I wouldn't smell as bad either.

  28. pete Says:

BTW troll. Our comments may appear childish, to a child. But, what you detect is our utter contempt for a Reichwing apologist of the most snide and insinuating nature. He deserves no response of more wit than hoots and catcalls. Though it's not my style.

I prefer to just expand on the apparent faults of idiots who continue to carry water for the worst generation of politicians in American history. I ridicule their ignorance and spit at their hypocrisy.

So? Please forgive me for not stopping by to provide a response to a group of people who would find great difficulty in proving that they are worth the resources they consume. I hope you find it mature, reflective, and honest...

When one of the leaders of this pro-Hillary group says on Hardball that McCain is a "moderate" and that she still hasn't made up her mind, this leads me to think that these people either want the process to favor them or they'll act like an undecided bloc that is...IMO...acting like a bunch of spoiled whiners, trying to hijack the system for their own selfish whims. Sometimes when people like this think they are doing the right thing, they are actually being the one thing they hate most, i.e. G.W. Bush circa Florida 2000.

  41. pete Says:

I think it's safe to say that a great many Americans haven't yet given serious thought to their vote. They don't develop much political fervor before the head to head contest. Many have not yet decided to vote, and many who intend to vote will stay home.

There are going to be an unknown number of Americans who will, when alone in the booth, vote for the white guy. That number will be significant either way and it would be foolish to deny it. Also significant will be the unknown number of unaffiliated voters who only know that Chimpy sucks and they will vote Dem to show their disaffection.

I do not honestly believe that many will vote for McSpin out of spite or for Hillary's sake. I think that, by election day, most people will be pissed-off enough to vote for the better candidate. It's just a hunch but that's where I would place my bet.

Her supporters already heed her vision, that's why they have reservations about Obama. If Obama heeds her vision and comes out clearly stating how he's going to deliver it instead of waffling on FISA, abortion rights, religious charity spending and every other 'right-leaning' tendency he exhibits - then her supporters will see he's a democrat instead of another McCain pretending to be a democrat which is what he comes across as right now. If he sounds like McCain, then these voters say why not vote for McCain since McCain and his minions didn't just s**t over Hillary for the last 9 months with vitriol, smears and demonizing...

If Obama wants to win, he needs to win over Hillary supporters as opposed to 'beating them down' the way the Zooniacs and assorted lunatics have tried to do over the last few months...

Guess which component is at the convention, making a stink? These folk are there, looking for political concessions, not political niceties. To them, respect is measured in power, and they are not above stroking their politically unlearned cohort to achieve it.

"Infighting"? I think not. Just an odd-ball in need of a spanking. RHF is quite famous for a offensive style. Crud and boorish from the start and, usually, easy to ignore. But, sometimes certain untruths are said which need to be confronted with equal portions of wit and venom. And I must concede a certain lack of patience with liars and fools.

I’m not so sure MCM. I think that laughter, even if it’s a bit grim, is quite often the healthiest response to horrific things. Laugh, scream, or cry. They all help, but, when you get it out of your system you gotta move on and make reasoned decisions.

    Point(s) taken , understood and accepted ..........

I'm merely frustated , like I'm sure you both are , as well as almost everyone that posts here ; fighting amongst ourselves (even though we all do not agree implicitly on many things ; and that's a good thing) , is not what any of us , or this country , really needs right now.

I'm merely irritated at how a moronic mental furball like Brooks , is constantly given a platform to spew inane remarks , that are so obviously partisan.

It bothers me further that it seems no one , outside of forums such as TP and those who post here and similar settings , are concerned about freedoms , rights , or even general decent governance ; much less , speaking for the over 1 million Iraqis who have already been slaughtered .............It's sad.

GREED, in this day and age ...........

  105. pete Says:

Well, it's trite but true that "things are seldom as good as one hopes, or as bad as one fears". Though I stipulate that A LOT is bad.

However, on good days, I can share the excitement that so much, both urgent and extraneous, can be changed in the near future. Frankly, it's been decades since our country was so agitated/excited/moyivated, and, historically that's has made things happen very quickly. Good things can snowball as well as bad.

All that being said, I'm frustrated, impatient and apprehensive as well. But that's just common sense.

It goes beyond one's exploitation ; the influence you have on others.

    August 27th, 2008 at 2:08 am

I'll take a quick stab at that, before I retire. Frustration is as much a product of impatience as it is disaffection. And it, like humor, is a perfectly healthy response. The challenge is to avoid becoming invested in frustration or allowing it to feed apathy and despair.

As unsatisfying as Convention stumping can be there is still a sense of the strengths inherent in our society. As I said earlier, it's been a long time since We The People really exercised our will. And if we do as good a job with our, legitimate, internal enemies as we have, historically, done with legitimate external enemies.

    G'night again.

  150. jkd7854 Says:

The whole planet weather systems are screwed up. Al Gore is right. They are actually opening up new shipping lanes in the Artic Sea, becuase during the summer, ships will be able to travel across the North Pole without breaking ice.

    Its called precession.

  153. jkd7854 Says:

I don't think it's a question of whether I prefer La Nina or El Nino. It's just that each one causes a disruption in the normal weather patterns and somewhere they are going to suffer. Whether it be drought or excessive rain. For instance, we need rain here in So. Calif. but too much would cause a lot of trouble.

  155. Xisithrus Says:

    jkd7854

Where do you think cold water, from melting ice, goes?

  156. jkd7854 Says:

I agree with that. There is precession of the the equinoxes. But that takes 10,000 years. Once, Vega was the North Star instead of Polaris. This is like a top spinning. What is more immediate might be a polar shift or a sudden change in the earrhs magnetic field.

  157. Xisithrus Says:

I agree with that. There is precession of the the equinoxes. But that takes 10,000 years

The precession cycle is 26,ooo years. The next house, after Jesus piscean one is the House of aquarius, IE pouring water.

  158. jkd7854 Says:

Cold water from melting ice changes the alkalinity of the oceans and causes drastic changes in temperatures and current drives. For instance, a sudden even partial melting of Greenland would alter the Gulf Stream current which warms up the Atlantic and Great Britain and Europe could go through a mini ice age. And we're talking years, not centuries.

  159. jkd7854 Says:

Brooks is a rich celebrity bloviator that is terrified of loosing his position of power and priviledge afforded him as one of the village elders. Obama should freeze out these shills for the Republican Party and the status quo. No access will mean their careers are finished and America can get on with repairing the damage.

  164. jpopphan Says:

Heh.... After almost eight long years of "Dear Leader"-style adoration of George W. Bush - who can do no wrong, according to the GOP - this wingnut has the nerve to describe the genuine enthusiasm that Democrats have for Obama as a "North Korean pep rally"?

Last time I checked, no one forced the people attending the Democratic National Convention to fly to Denver and show up at the convention center. There were no armed men standing at the door, preventing people from leaving and making sure that everyone is cheering.

I think that the GOP has candidate-envy. They can't stand their candidate, and they're just jealous that we love our's. Sheesh.

  165. kpaul Says:

This kind of nonsense would evaporate if the media would just do their jobs by asking questions like "How are you familiar with North Korean pep rallies?" "Exactly what goes on at one?" "How do you know these things when most of the Western world does not?" "What exactly are the similarities between these two apparently disparate events?"

But it never occurs to the "media" to ask even these simple questions. Incredible. I am continually perplexed as to what qualifications or intellect makes one suitable to go into the profession of journalism these days.

I thought PBS did a wonderful job at the convention... we kept switching from the major channels to see who was covering what, and if you really want to see and hear ALL of the other speekers, without the mindless and endless talkover, then PBS is the place to watch.

With that said, however, Brooks seemed incredibly twitchy, and uncomfortable, and I was uncomfortable watching him. It also seems that the other show hosts and guests have sharpened their claws and tongues. I'm waiting for a brawl.
