Fox News flack hides behind anonymity to attack Jon Stewart.

The Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz reports that during a gathering with reporters in Denver yesterday, Daily Show host Jon Stewart ripped Fox News, saying the network’s “‘fair and balanced’ slogan is an insult ‘to people with brains’” and that “Barack Obama could cure cancer and they’d figure out a way to frame it as an economic disaster.” In response, a Fox News spokesman attacked Stewart, but he refused to give his name:

stewartweb2.jpgA Fox News spokesman, who was authorized to give the network’s response to Stewart’s comments but declined to be named, replied that “Jon’s clearly out of touch,” citing a Pew Research Center study showing the network has the most balanced audience in cable news, 39 percent Republicans and 33 percent Democrats. “But being out of touch with mainstream America is nothing new to Jon, as evidenced by the crash-and-burn ratings of this year’s Oscars telecast.”

Media Matters’ new blog County Fair notes that allowing the Fox spokesman anonymity in this case is against the Post’s attribution policy.

Digg It!

    Priceless.

  5. Bobwurst says:

So, faux news has fallen to the point of getting into a pissing contest with a comedy show? What’s next, challenging Sponge Bob to an arm wrestling contest?

  6. stateofthedivision says:

Now that’s bold, from an anonymous spokesman!

I guess they’re in touch with Jon Stewart’s popularity and didn’t want the corresponding blowback.

  7. upside99 says:

Jon Stewart is more informative as a comedy show than anything Faux has ever thrown against the tv screen.

I wouldn’t be too worried about it, Jon. Just proves your point when they can’t even name their source. Heh Heh.

  8. Tweedster says:

Oooooooooo, that Oscar ratings remark must’ve really stung!

Anyway, the composition of the audience does nothing to indicate the content of the channel. Most “liberals” I know who watch FAUX do so to be informed about how moronic the channel is. Sometimes it is fun to tune into O’Reilly and make falafel jokes – that is, when Moyers isn’t airing on PBS…

Yes, who would ever question a “news” channel run by a GOP campaign strategist?

  10. tom says:

FoxSnooze fails to understand the motives of its audience segments.

Reactionaries (read: Republicans) tune in to confirm their own ignorance.

Progressives (read: Democrats and moderates) tune in for the pure entertainment value of watching a bunch of meatheads display their ignorance.

When a “news” organization feels compelled to rebut the criticism of a comedian who anchors a satire of the nighly news it says far more about the “news” network than about the comedian. Do the FoxBots actually think their geriatric viewers listen to John Stewart’s opinions or is Fox simply such a toxic, reactive entity that it must reflexively strike out like an invertibrate predator at anything that brushes against it? I’ll leave that question to the philosophers.

  14. tom says:

Do the FoxBots actually think their geriatric viewers listen to John Stewart’s opinions

FoxSnooze is so out of touch with reality that they actually think Stephen Colbert’s show pays homage to Bildo and the rest of its rant-jockeys.

Goodie, more material for Jon and Colbert.

    No really, what????

Great idea, Faux — pick a fight over who’s got more credibility in delivering the news — you, or a comedian.

  20. stateofthedivision says:

Tang, you just clued the American people into the corporatocracy.

Main news feed from FOX for the DNC? How’s that fair and balanced.

Jon’s point becomes even more important. Only a tool like you would cheer…

Can’t have it both ways.

So Tank is as much as admitting that Faux used its access to sabotage the “Fair and Balanced™” coverage of the Democratic National Convention?

And what is this “both ways” that you can’t have it, Tanky?

Your comment obviously wasn’t subjected to proper vetting.

  22. dickdata42 says:

The occasions when the Washington Post or the NYT follow their rules are probably more newsworthy than those when they don’t. I watch 4 Faux News programs every week. I suggest that liberals are interested in all points of view, while conservatives only want to hear their viewpoint reflected.

  23. upside99 says:

    Hey Tanq,

I bet you were as surprised as the rest of the Repugs when Colbert did his nuking of Dubya and the rest of you Righties at the WH Press Corps dinner, right?

That will go down as the best work ever by Jon Stewart and his band of Merry men.

Just shows what more intelligence, education and humor can do for you.

  24. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Did you know that Fox News is controlling the feed from the Democratic convention? Someone said “it was their turn”. Where did this “turn” come from and why did the Democrats agree to turn over the filming of their convention to Fox. According to Thom Hartmann, they are filming the convention to make it look bad for the Democrats. Last night while filming Michele Obama’s speech, they would pan to the audience. But, they chose who they panned to. When they panned to a white member of the audience, they chose people who were either not paying attention by talking to each other or looking bored. But when they panned to black members of the audience, they were always engaged and rowdy members of the audience. They are also controlling the sound that comes through on the TV. At one point when there was thunderous applause for Michele Obama, all the home audience heard was a few people clapping.

I am furious that 1) Fox would do this and 2) that the Democrats allowed them to do it.

The “smackdown” stunk to high heaven and was so lame it had to be anonymously delivered. Boo.

  26. Bob says:

It’s funny too that Jon was probably the first to make a degrading comment about the Oscar show.

Attack the messenger, Faux. That shows real journalistic integrity. Also, it will help your network to watch The Daily Show since it is much closer to news than you’ve done.

  27. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

“..citing a Pew Research Center study showing the network has the most balanced audience in cable news, 39 percent Republicans and 33 percent Democrats”

Even if I believed this study (which I don’t), all that means is that Fox has a fairly balanced audience. It means nothing about how Fox reports the news and skews it’s reporting.

It’s interesting to hear you say that because, even with Fox’s crappy biased filming of the event, everyone I have talked to thought it was great and they were really inspired. That’s what I have also read in the blogs. So, my conclusion is that real people thought the first night was great, the MSM trying to manufacture controversy (their goal in life) reports that it was not so great. Unfortunately the MSM doesn’t realize that their opinion doesn’t mean anything to us. We are able to form our own opinions, thank you very much.

So is that the reason that the democrats looked like bumbling fools last night or not? More “they cheated” excuses.

First of all, they only looked like bumbling fools to you and your ilk, the rest of us could see quite well what was happening. We are not stupid. Did Fox really think that we would buy their biased filming of the event? The people who were there, in the building, saw something completely different from what Fox showed the home audience. So, where’s the “fair and balanced” in that idiot troll? Fortunately the people in the home audience were able to judge for themselves what they thought of the speeches and by and large they thought they were great. At least everyone other than you and your ilk thought they were great. And we really don’t care what you think.

  87. ralph the wonder llama says:

    katy Says:
oh, and, was it my local provider? or was THE DAILY SHOW another repeat last night?

katy, I generally catch the Daily Show’s previous day episode repeat in the early evening. Last night was the first new episode in over a week, so the show I caught was a repeat. maybe this is what happened to you.

Sooooooooooooooo Republicans are cowards. Tell me something I don’t know.

  89. sectionop92 says:

Some of these Republicans make Andy Dick look like Hercules.

I thought Andy’s Dick was in Rush’s mouth in the thread below…

  91. kscitydude says:

Jon forgot to mention new study by the Pew Research Study shows that viewers of the Daily Show and the Colbert Report have the highest knowledge of national and international affairs, while Fox News viewers rank nearly dead last. It’s easy to brainwash idiots.

  92. katy says:

and another thing – that “interview” with pelosi, after her openig speech – that’s the first time i’ve ever thought anything bad about ann curry… she just would not let up – all hillary all the time… all her questions were about the hillary thang.

convinced me that the biggest part of that is medai fabricated.
    again.

  93. sectionop92 says:

Rush already got in trouble for the Oxy, so he’ll go for some “Alberto” on his next Caribbean vacation. Rush can’t endanger the 400 million George Washington’s he has coming his way, due to the hate and trite cotton gin. Because we all know not even a mail-order bride from Russia will put up with his crap.

  94. dasm says:

2 studies have now shown that viewers of Stewart & Colbert are the best informed on factual news; Fox viewers came in as the least informed. So it’s really Fox that is completely out of touch.

  95. 49erDem says:

Hasn’t FOX tried not once but twice to develop a show which would be an “answer” to Jon Stewart’s Daily Show? And haven’t these two shows died ugly deaths within weeks of opening because they just were not funny?

Conservatives aren’t funny. Jon Stewart eats them for lunch.

  96. shoeless says:

Oh gawd, I saw about the first 10 minutes of the first episode and it was humiliatingly unfunny! I think they yanked it after only a couple of episodes because it was so embarrassing!

  97. Leftside Annie says:

Yeah, the GOP platform of more death, more war, more racism, more bigotry and more Christofascist religious fanaticism is just knee-slappingly hilarious.

  98. gummitch says:

Over and over again, we’ve heard the neocons and our trolls complain that the MSM uses “anonymous sources”, even if those sources are in political or military positions where they would clearly lose their jobs if their names were known.

But here? Suddenly the trolls think that an anonymous source is perfectly OK — and I’m sure this has nothing to do with the anonymous individual being with FoxSnooze.

  99. ohplease says:

did they REALLY just call jon stewart “out of touch”? REALLY fox, REALLY?

1am, my first LOL of the day. i hope i dont wake the neighbors up.

  100. jkd7854 says:

    FOX? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
