McCain’s GOP platform contains ‘caveats about the uncertainty’ of climate science.

The Washington Times reports today that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will “run on the final version” of the Republican Party’s election platform, a draft of which the GOP’s 112-delegate platform committee is debating today and tomorrow. The staff-written draft contains a number of hard line conservative positions with which McCain supposedly disagrees:

- “The platform draft calls for constitutional bans on abortion and gay marriage, two steps McCain does not support.”

- Despite McCain’s claims that he believes global warming is real, “the platform is loaded with caveats about the uncertainty of science and the need to ‘resist no-growth radicalism’ in taking on climate change.”

- Despite McCain’s previous support for “a path to citizenship” for illegal immigrants, “the draft platform also retains tough language against illegal immigration and a flat statement of opposition to amnesty for illegal immigrants.”

Additionally, despite his flip-flop on offshore drilling, McCain has thus far maintained his opposition to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve. But the National Review’s Stephen Spruiell reports that the GOP platform endorses “drilling” in the “onshore fields” in Alaska.

Update Spruiell indicates at The Corner that references to "global warming" have now been removed from the platform: "The section was titled, 'Global Warming and Environmental Protection.' Now it's just, 'Environmental Protection.'"

There’s also uncertainty about his position on issues, much less his longevity…

All the Global Warming deniers should be relocated to the North Pole. After it melts in the next few months, then let’s see what they think about the crisis.

Mccain would rather lose our coastline to flooding than lose an election.

I’m not questioning his patriotism mind you.

  4. impeachcheneythenbush says:

Let’s not forget that he abstained from helping create the Republican platform. I think it’s called “believable deniability.” Another example of McCain’s Straight Talk being, in reality, a flapping split tongue. Native Americans used to refer to the White Man speaking with split tongue (saying one thing and doing another). There’s a good reason Satan is represented as a snake in Genesis, an animal with a split tongue. Satan is also called “the father of lies.”

So McCain, once again, is letting his staff run the show – not much of an authoritarian is he?

And just who are these “no-growth radicals” that McCain and the science deniers are constantly talking about? Groups like Greenpeace usually talk about the economic gains we will realize from investment in renewable resources and energy efficiency. I haven’t seen any environmental group suggesting that we revert to the preindustrial age.

Geez, I thought grampy Mcwars was smart enough not to believe in the Reich Wing Noble Lie about Global Warming? It just goes to show that the Re-puke party and it`s values comes before the country`s needs.

This should be taken as a warning sign. Shortly after Ronnie RayGun was elected, his diminished capacity enabled Nancy and her astrologer to run the country. The RayGun years were prelude to the disasters of Poppy and GDumbya’s regimes.

Do we really want Cindy McNumbNuts as our next de facto presi-dunce?

Now, now, let’s believe the best about McSame. He’s just an addled old man entering senility without a clue. That’s the best I can believe about him. He has caveats about pretty much everything.

The ostrich-like GOPers should tell it to the polar bears, who are quickly losing their ancestral homes on the polar ice cap, which is rapidly shrinking, day by day. What could possibly be more stupid than a Republican? Two Republicans…

  11. shoeless says:

Well that explains it. A lot more Republicans would believe in global warming if it didn’t involve all that icky science stuff.

  12. hussein toasterhead says:

I also like how the caveat is not restricted to climate science. It’s a caveat about the uncertainty of ALL science. Does this mean we can expect high-level debates this fall over the quantum model of gravity?

  13. 49erDem says:

See people? McCain is NOTHING like Bush. Bush is certain it’s not a problem and McCain is uncertain that there is a problem. Veerrrrrrrrry different!

    My friends,

John McCain spent five and a half years as a POW and didn’t have a platform to ignore when pandering to independent voters.

Perhaps the reason why we continue to fall behind other nations when it comes to techological expertise is the continued politicization and ‘dumbing down’ of science to meet party needs rather than educating and enlightening.

The future is about science and technology. McStain knows about neither. Watch for more pushes for the “science” of intelligent design.

I see no mention about stem cell research, but I’m sure McStain is fully prepared to renounce his position on that, too.

Or try in this context: The EVIL European/Anti-American Scientists v. American Jobs/American Security/No Gays/All English

No way I’m siding with EVIL!

    Xisithrus Says:

Theories are uncertain, and to say all science is uncertain is itself a theory.

Most people are confused about the meanings of scientific laws, theories and hypothesis.
New theories can actually invalidate previously established scientific laws.

For example the original Newtonian laws of motion were inaccurate because they did not incorporate the theory of relativity later observed by Einstein.

When the theory of relativity is taken into account when calculating problems using the laws of motion then the calculations are much more accurate.

  31. A Patriot Acting says:

McCrappedmypants is going to have quite a juggling act to pull off in the coming weeks. His neocon and lobbyist masters are demanding that he back their regressive platforms on key issues that McPow has been trying to use to woo Independents. Quite a conundrum trying to convince the public that you support Roe v. Wade and want to place Supreme Court Justices who will overturn it. He’s had relative success to date supporting both sides of an issue when dealing with small audiences around the country. However, when the Republican Convention and the debates begin, McSame will need a to make a final mass public decision as to which side he will actually stand on on the issues. Does he appeal to the base or the Independents? Kinda tough that he needs both group’s support to even have a fighting chance. Then there is that one word which could spell a rapid and decisive defeat for McGrampa…”draft”. It will be tough to flip-flop once you’ve stated your position in a debate or in front of America during the Convention. Stay tuned for the implosion of the John McCain Presidential Campaign…

  38. 49erDem says:

mk3872, I would argue that the number of Clinton supporters who will vote for McCain is much less than the story the media is selling. Compare the number of signers at the PUMA site to the 18 million who voted for Clinton. Make it a fraction. What does that tell you?

True! It all depends on altitude and air pressure and any chemicals that may be dissolved in the water. With all these uncertainties in the science of water boiling, we should wait for further years of testing before attempting to make pasta.
