Wallace Defends McCain’s POW Dodge On Houses Gaffe: ‘It’s Not A Talking Point, It’s A Fact’

On the Tonight Show last night, host Jay Leno asked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) about his inability to say how many houses he owns. Before giving an answer, McCain turned to an unrelated subject, his years as a prisoner of war:

LENO: For $1 million, how many houses do you own?

MCCAIN: You know, could I just mention to you Jay, in a moment of seriousness, I spent five and a half years in a prison cell. I didn’t have house. I didn’t have a kitchen table. I didn’t have a table. I didn’t have a chair. And I spent those five and a half years because — not because I wanted to get a house when I got out. … I’m proud of my record of service to this country, and it has nothing to do with houses. It has to do with putting Americans in houses and keeping them in their homes.

On Morning Joe today, Mika Brzezinski called it “an awkward moment” and Joe Scarborough said it reflected Maureen Dowd’s point that McCain’s “going to the well a bit too often.” But McCain spokesperson Nicole Wallace disagreed, saying, “it’s not a talking point, it’s a fact.” “It’s not thrown out there in anything other than an explanation,” said Wallace. Watch it:

The problem with McCain’s housing gaffe is that it highlights how he is running a campaign of the rich, by the rich, and for the rich:

– Asked to “define rich” recently, McCain joked, “How about $5 million.” Asked to refine that answer, McCain later said that some people “are poor if they’re billionaires.”

– McCain’s is proposing a tax policy that primarily benefits the rich. Under his tax plan, McCain’s family would get a $300,000 tax break while middle class Americans would save only $319.

– One of his top economic advisers, Phil Gramm, who has been called McCain’s “econ brain,” recently said that America has “become a nation of whiners” when it comes to what he deems “a mental recession.”

– As recently as last week, McCain said, “I still believe the fundamentals of our economy are strong.”

In his interview with Leno, McCain said his “service to this country” has “nothing to do with houses,” but with “putting Americans in houses and keeping them in their homes.” But this ignores the fact that he has a record of denying assistance to homeowners.

UpdateNBC’s First Read reported yesterday that the McCain campaign “will be prepared to show McCain's ‘home’ in Hanoi by using images of his cell. They claim they have not overused the POW element and insist they have ‘underused it.’”

    Noun, Verb, POW.

  2. Badmoodman Says:

John McCain was not only a P.O.W. but he is a former Prisoner of War!!

  3. unbelievable Says:

Fine, it's a fact that John McCain has brain damage that causes his verbal incontinence.

Now, explain to me why I want someone that mentally deficient to be President!

  4. RUCerious Says:

    This is real interesting.

Imagine that every time I say something stupid in front of my boss (happens way too frequently), I just say, Hey! I'm a Viet Nam Vet. Cut me some slack!

Maybe the first or second time it might work, after that, it's just lucking fame.

  5. Badmoodman Says:

LENO: For $1 million, how many houses do you own? (And Leno laughed and smirked).

"Seriously," McCain intones..... Ummm, Johnny Mac, seriously, you're getting tight around the collar and have lost your sense of humor.

  6. RUCerious Says:

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I have ONE house.

  7. Fan of Man Says:

yeah? fact is bush IS a war criminal...

    John McInsane = a noun, a verb, a pow

    Ouch

  9. Musk Says:

Eveytime MaCain shamelessly mentions being a POW, the more insulted i get . . . which, in turn, makes me feel more confidant about Obama's election

  10. Paul W Says:

I’m proud of my record of service to this country, and it has nothing to do with houses. It has to do with putting Americans in houses and keeping them in their homes.

How does he plan on doing that given that he's in complete denial about what hard working American families are facing today.

  11. Badmoodman Says:

Bush devalued a Yale education. McCain is devaluing P.O.W.s.

  12. paleolib Says:

Funny how the same people who made fun of John Kerry's Purple Hearts now rally behind a single (non)issue candidate.

In further proof that Republicans are immune to irony, today's wingnut talking point is that the Dems are stuck in the '60s. This from a party running a candidate whose alleged qualification for the presidency is having been a POW in . . . the '60s and whose current attack ad accuses Obama of being too close to a radical from . . . the '60s.

  13. Doc Rock Says:

Wasn't it also John McBush who said that he told Kerry not to mention his Vietnam service? Now it is the apple pie and flag in which he will wrap himself to hide his pandering to the right and selling of his political soul to the rich at the cost of the weak, the poor, and voiceless. Creeps me out!

  14. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Ms. Wallace is correct in that it IS a fact that john McCain was a POW.

It is a fact that has NOTHING to do with McCain's inability to recall how many houses he owns, but it is a fact nonetheless.

He would have done just as well to say something like,

You know, could I just mention to you Jay, in a moment of seriousness, ABBA cut their first record in the mid seventies. This explains why my musical tastes stopped evolving when I was a POW.

See? That's a fact, too. And it has just as much to do with the question.

  15. unbelievable Says:

UpdateNBC’s First Read reported yesterday that the McCain campaign “will be prepared to show McCain's ‘home’ in Hanoi by using images of his cell.

It was 35 years ago! Of course it's going to look worse!

The Democrats should immediately counter with images of his 10 houses NOW.

  16. raynman Says:

"Senator McCain, your fly is open."

"Well, you know, when I was a POW in Viet Nam, I didn't even have a fly."

  17. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    Doc Rock Says:
Wasn’t it also John McBush who said that he told Kerry not to mention his Vietnam service?

Of course. It wouldn't do for McSame to have another war hero exploiting HIS service record to get elected in '04 when McSame was planning on using that gimmick in '08.

  18. 5th Estate Says:

So, Senator McCain, what would be your priorities in your first 100 days as President?

McCain: Well first of all I’d recover from my wounds and dream of escaping.

  19. Bob Says:

He forgot to mention that he had to walk five miles in the snow and it was uphill both ways. Looks like that will be his answer to everything even though it doesn't answer anything. There's a fine line between sympathetic and pathetic, and John's pushing hard for the latter. So you were a POW, it doesn't qualify you to be President.

  20. dasm Says:

Another fact for Wallace: being a POW does not mean you are fit to be president. And that seems to be all McCain has to offer, at least when you look at the fact (another one) that he brings it up constantly to deflect from real issues or from answering questions.

  21. DRxJ Says:

So, McSame has taken a page from Rudy's 9/11 playbook?
    Seriously?

If I may be so bold, and encourage a reasonable response from someone on the right, please explain to me how a senior moment about ownership of houses equates to having no home 35 years ago, to wanting to make sure everyone has a home now?

  22. Alecto Says:

    I say:
McCain got shot down ON PURPOSE. He knew he would get a soft cushy spot being the son of an Admiral, so he figured he set the plane down "roughly" after shouting Mayday a few times, and voila, he is a "bonfide" hero, unto himself.
He is a traitor par excelleance, just like boooooosh and dead eye dick chezey.

    Hnag them all!!

  23. 5th Estate Says:

So, Senator McCain, what do you plan to do about the housing crisis?

McCain: “If I’m elected I will promote a program of affordable housing which I call my “Tiger Cage” program/ I think every American family deserves to own a bamboo shack rather than having to rent one. “

  24. Alecto Says:

Bob Says: There’s a fine line between sympathetic and pathetic"

    You mean psychotic don't you.

  25. DRxJ Says:

Reporter: McCain, how do you plan on helping the economic crisis the middle class is currently facing?

McSame: Woah! Look! Over there! I was a P.O.W.!
    Thank you. No further questions.

  26. unbelievable Says:

Alecto Says: McCain got shot down ON PURPOSE. He knew he would get a soft cushy spot being the son of an Admiral, so he figured he set the plane down “roughly” after shouting Mayday a few times, and voila, he is a “bonfide” hero, unto himself.

The Democrats could point out that he was safe from combat where others lives were at risk from bullets and bombs.

  27. Alecto Says:

I wonder if he has one bedroom in the 7 houses that is made up like his cage? Hmmm inquiring minds want to know, I guess I will get a "NEWS" paper like the enquirer to get on that. It seems, just like the rest of the neo-con world up is down, and the tabloids are the real news sources.

  28. DRxJ Says:

McPutz: When I was a guest at the Hanoi Hilton, I didn't even have a home.

    Leno: About your music preferences;
McPutz: I heard that Woodstock was quite a musical and pharmaceutical experience, but I was tied up at the time.

Leno: You said social security is a disgrace. What do you plan to do about it.
McPutz: I didn't even collect my pay let alone social security when I was a POW.

Leno: How do you see the economy.
McPutz: I had no one to teach me economics when I was a POW.

Leno: How do we deal with Iran?
Mcputz: I would bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran. I learned how to win wars when I was a POW.

    snark

McCain: "Let me cut you off right there and start by saying, my friends, that I was a p.o.w. for five years...(trails off incoherently)

    Reporter: "Mr. President..."

Chief of staff Lieberman: "Shh, the President is sleeping now, this press conference is over"

  37. LividLib Says:

Anyone who whines and complains about how bad matters are now, should shut up and contemplate four or more years of this buffoon and his mindless blathering. Yuck. My oatmeal is cold now.

All while ignoring veterans that are homeless ( they know how many houses they own, Zero ) and have to currently live under bridges, begging for handouts on the street corners. McCain has ignored todays plight of veterans, from the abuses of the VA, to those who are currently homeless, while McCain has too many houses to remember how many he has.

You know, McCain is not the first or last POW. (My uncle was captured at the Battle of the Bulge by the Germans. I loved him, but it didn't qualify him to be president). I honor all of their service.

The question is this: many Americans are having difficulty maintaining ONE home, so if you have so many that you can't count them, how do you relate and do something about the current economic crisis we are in?

McCain is the son of an admiral and married a heiress. He is out of touch with the rest of us.

Oh, I forgot. He was a POW, so I should vote for him, right?

  48. McWars Says:

    Right on, Wayne.

McCain should become president because he's a POW, but other POWs/vets should go ignored because they're homeless. Maybe they could have pulled themselves from under if they married a rich wo/man!

For a party that has a history of denigrating the service of Vietnam veterans (Kerry, Max Cleland, etc.) it is odd to me that they would now spend so much time reminding the country of yet another senseless war promoted by Republicans.

The gentleman from Arizona's "I done scratched crosses in the dirt while the homos beated my plane-crashing booty and busted me arms" line along with the bulging volume of drivel from the current drooler-in-chief ensure that future history books will be written by caricaturists and read by no one. John McCain's campaign is reviving the most famous political commercial of the Democratic primary cycle, launching a new 30-second spot Tuesday that uses footage from Hillary Clinton's original ad and declares "Hillary's

The ad, set to run in key battleground states and specifically in Denver this week, also goes a step further than the New York senator's original ad, explicitly detailing the national security threats America faces.

"Uncertainty. Dangerous aggression. Rogue nations. Radicalism," the ad's narrator states as images of tanks and launching missiles flash on screen.

The ad also includes Clinton's attack on Barack Obama in March 2008 in which she declared "I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience that he will bring to the White House. And, Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002."

She was NEVER interested in party "unity".

She's a selfish, political whore who'd just as soon switch parties if it was in her best interests.

    I hate that b*tch.

  89. Alecto Says:

    From the video:

"The North Vietname shot down roughly 60% more U.S. Aircraft based on the information John Sydney McCain voluntarily gave to the North Vietnamese.

  90. JMOHR Says:

No, this will be the defining moment in this election. Until recently, Obama has given McCain an absolutely free ride on his character. McCain has pummeled Obama unmercifully with ads full of invective, lies (tax position) and subtle racism. Indeed, McCain has brought on a full court press with the Karl Rove team.

There will be a tendency on the left to slack off on the attack ads. You hear that we are to be running a positive campaign. Forget it. It will not work. Never has and cannot work. The press is giving McCain a free ride. The comparison will become very easy, even Obama can say no bad about McCain. Hillary and Biden said McCain was qualified. So why would you not vote for McCain. Even Obama praises him.

No, we see that this will degenerate into nothing more than a popularity contest for a war hero that the Democrats will lose unless we de-construct the myth. This means going after his record with lobbyists, the Keating 5 and every other negative political or ethical issue.

  91. Alecto Says:

From 3:29 to 3:40 in the video.

    McTRAITOR

  92. Alecto Says:

"She was NEVER interested in party “unity”.

She’s a selfish, political whore who’d just as soon switch parties if it was in her best interests."

Clinton is a DLCer. The DLC will kill the DNC.

  93. Alecto Says:

If there is nothing to hide, why is McTraitor's war record sealed?

  94. Alecto Says:

So, it is clear, McTraitor is the reason we still have MIAs from Vietnam.

  95. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

The ad also includes Clinton’s attack on Barack Obama in March 2008 in which she declared “I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience that he will bring to the White House. And, Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002.”

I was never a Hillary supporter, but my sister was. I told her about what Hillary had said about Obama vs. McCain in that attack, and she didn't believe it at first. I showed her a video and she switched to supporting Obama immediately. Her comment to me: You were right not to trust Hillary.

  96. Fred Says:

    Alecto Says:
If there is nothing to hide, why is McTraitor’s war record sealed?

Same reason that bush's was sealed. Remember the gop has allies in the military. Most lifers are republicans and they lie. See: Colin Powell

  97. 49erDem Says:

Senator McCain, your position on healthcare? "In Hanoi, I had no healthcare!"

Your position on the housing crisis? "I had only one little room.... in Hanoi!"

Your position on the stress put on our military in Iraq and Afganistan? "In Hanoi, they put me in stress positions!"

Your position on the collapse of the dollar? "I didn't have any dollars in that Hanoi prison cell!"

Your position on the government's response to Katrina? "I was in a prison cell in Hanoi!"

Why have you filled your campaign staff with corporate lobbyists? "There were no lobbyists in that Hanoi prison cell!"

    And so on...

  98. Game of Life Says:

    mcchimpy what's your favorite color?

You know when I was captured I didn't have a favorite color.

mcchimpy what's your view on viagra?

    You know when I was a POW, I didn't have a hard-on for 5 yrs.

    This is just bs.

  99. islander Says:

Someone should have asked how many videos McCain recalls making for Hanoi not how many houses he owns? Did "songbird" McCain make more than 30 videos plus additional radio broadcasts for the North Viets when he was a POW?.
Records and transcripts are in the custody of the CIA, Voice of America and Vietnam War Museum in Hanoi. Why doesn't McCain want his military records unsealed?

  100. Game of Life Says:

    Alecto Says:

    Innocent Bystander,
I think you have the number of houses a little high. Last count it was 7, not 11.
    Just keeping it real.

It would be 10 with Mitt's houses though. Which would be an interesting fact. How much does the Group Of Perverts ticket spend per year on houses compared to Obama/Biden?

Well it's a fact that mcchimpy...er his wife pays household help over 270K per year. mcchimpy has 12 houses.

  101. Uncle Fester Lurks Says:

Reporter: Senator McCain, if you are elected president would you try to privatize social security?

McCain: My friend, social security is a disgrace as a former POW I should be getting more benefits because I have given up 5 and a half years of my freedom to my country as a prisoner.

Reporter Senator McCain, some would say that you received preferentual treatment while in the Navy due to your father and grandfather both being admirals.

McCain: My friend, let me tell you about the time that I was a POW for five and a half years and was savagely beaten because I was a son of an admiral.

Reporter: Mr. McCain, you have made the claim that you know how to win wars, can you tell us where you acquired this valuable knowledge and what war have you ever won?

McCain: My friend, as a POW I had a lot of time thinking and contemplating war for five and a half years. We would have won the war in Vietnam if my text messages to General Westmoreland hadn't been intercepted by my prison guards.

Reporter: John...Without you mentioning that you are a former POW, a war hero and a legend in your own mind, what makes a befuddled, confused, angry, senile old man like you believe that you even have the mental capacity or the qualifications to be our next president?

McCain: um....chirp*chirp*chirp*....ahh.....did I tell you that I was a POW?

  102. southrnbelle Says:

The FACT is that he is a senile old man who has no business running for president!!!

  103. Johnbo Says:

By McInsane's own admission he doesn't understand economics - only enough to know that he's doing fine and has more houses than he can keep track of - and so he relies on the hero of lazzie-faire economics and de-regulation, former Texas Senator Phil Gramm, to guide him.

NO ONE is more responsible for the economic disasters of the past 10 years than Gramm. He was the one that snuck a rider written by Enron into a bill just as the Senate broke for the holidays in 2000 that allowed Enron to trade energy contracts on an unregulated market and led to Enron gaming the energy markets and led to the west coast energy crisis that cost businesses and individuals $30-$40 BILLION dollars. And the banking/credit crisis that has dragged down the world markets and cost an estimated $800 BILLION dollars? That can be traced back to the banking de-regulation legislation pushed by Gramm and aided and abetted by the hands-off, Libertarian approach to the resulting housing bubble by Alan Greenspan.

McSame just promises more government by the rich and for the rich.

  104. kwaayesnama Says:

    Are you a democrat? test

Would a Democrat vote for a man who voted against raising the minimum wage in, 1989, 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2006?

Would a Democrat vote to kill our bravest young people for 100 years looking for weapons of mass destruction that do not exist?

Would a Democrat vote for a man who does not know that 9-11 was caused by Osama Bin Laden not Sedam Hussein?

Would a Democrat vote the man who does not know if the Sunnis or Sheits are our enemies?

Would a Democrat vote for the man who voted against increasing
benefits for the military that he sends in harm’s way?

Would a Democrat vote to keep putting our government on the China, Saudi Arabia credit card?

Would a Democrat vote for tax cuts only for the wealthy?

Would a Democrat vote for opposition to SCHIP?

Would a Democrat vote for tax credits for health care instead of a
    nation health care system?

Would a Democrat vote to overturn Roe v. Wade?

Would a Democrat vote for a right-wing Supreme Court?

Would a Democrat vote for a third Bush term?

Would a Democrat vote for a man who says the economic downturn is psychological?

Would a Democrat vote for a man who says you are better off under George Bush?

Would a Democrat vote for a man who says irresponsible, undeserving homeowners are losing their homes? But is fortunate to own 8 homes!

  105. dbadass Says:

Still hawking that film I see. Is there any polyandry going on as well?

  106. 5150 Says:

Goldilocks asks, which of my seven houses has a faucet?

  107. desertflower1 Says:

The FACT is...McCain DID HAVE A HOUSE AND A KITCHEN TABLE...WITH HIS WIFE SITTING THERE, AND THEIR CHILD, WAITING FOR HIM TO COME HOME.This guy is such a BS'er...since he doesn't know how to use the internet, maybe that's why he thinks the rest of us can't. Stuffs not that hard to find! So, when he came home, from being a victim in, an illegal war, he found a young sweet thing, and dumped the sick wife and kid. NOW THAT'S SOME GREAT PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL (NOT).Anyone that votes for this guy ought to have their head examined.

  108. desertflower1 Says:

Sorry...but I'm going to put this everywhere I can ...We need to have Karl Rove held in contempt, and he and his cronies need to be held accountable for their actions...once one starts talking, they'll ALL start talking because they won't want to go to jail for him....WWW.contemptforrove.com. Sign the petition. Thanks, and spread the word!

  109. nycbassist Says:

Clearly, if he is incapable of doing so many things right, incapable of recalling important details, incapable of remembering who are enemies are, then it is only logical he is unfit to lead our country! At this point, it doesn't MATTER what his reason for being so incompetent is. He is unfit as a leader and that's all there is to it.

When he blunders hugely on the economy, or on our defense, (offense, really) we aren't going to want to hear that excuse then. It's time that someone points this out every time he uses it as a defense. EVERY TIME!
