Why was Cheney aide in Georgia before the conflict?

The LA Times reports that Joseph R. Wood, Vice President Cheney’s deputy assistant for national security affairs, “was in Georgia shortly before the war began.” James Gerstenzang wonders what Wood was doing there. Sergei Markov — a senior political scientist who is close to Vladimir Putin — claimed recently that the war was “part of a plot by Dick Cheney” to help John McCain. But media reports indicate that a “parade” of U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, had warned Georgia President Mikheil Saakashvili not to instigate the conflict with Russia.

i remember that rove was in the neighborhood also…

he doesn’t look think the “beach” type either…

  2. Kay says:

    Correction:

Wood had asked Saakashvili to instigate the conflict with Russia. So glad I could help.

  3. katy says:

where did THAT come from? i’ll try again:

he doesn’t look like the “beach” type either…

    (he obviously doesn’t “think” it)

  4. raynman says:

it’s purely coincidence, not a smoking gun at all

did I mention that McCain is a POW?

  5. hussein toasterhead says:

Meh, probably nothing. Wood was just taking advantage of the Five Rugs for Five Lari sale at a market in T’bilisi.

Georgia and nearby Crimea seem to have suffered from a severe infestations of rank Republicans in the last few weeks…
Did bully Saakashvili order the slaughter of the South Ossetians on his own volition or was he egged on by the presence of Israelis, mercenaries, and American military trainers?

The Soviet dictator Joe Stalin supported the “territorial integrity of Georgia.” So why are Bush, Cheney, Rice and McCain following the imperial wishes of a Soviet dictator?

Hey, how ’bout that Georgian wine?!

  9. stateofthedivision says:

It’s an early chess move. Cheney needs Russia occupied on as many fronts as possible to minimize their interference after Israel’s attack on Iran and America’s containing the blow back.

As for saying one thing for public consumption and doing something different, we should all be familiar with the Condi wink. Summer of 2006 Iran, Lebanon?

Bush and Cheney want to kick Iran’s arse in the worst way. The multinationals want access to that Persian oil.

  10. Mr. Evil says:

And did anyone hear about Cindy McCain going to Georgia to assess the situation? WTF?!!!

  11. sacopenapa says:

Of course the WH’s criminals were behind Georgia’s agression on the separatist provinces! In Latin America, the US is arming the criminal Colonbian government of Uribe, which has conections with drugs production, in order to quash the new democraticly elected governments in South America! The Armament Industry hates Democracy and loves new conflicts so they can make more profits and the US can get hold on to the natural resources of these places. In the case of Georgia’s agression, energy and control of energy is behind Chenney and Rice strategies… They should be hanged for the War Crimes! Check on YOUTUBE “The Panama’s Deception” and you will see the true face of the US’s government. It is a very ugly face that has nothing to do with the American people!

  12. stateofthedivision says:

So, Cheney gets Wood to start war?

Naw, she is just going to christen a new Budweiser Distribution Center. Gotta keep those 8,9 or 10 homes up, ya know!

  15. mark_scism says:

I’m surprised an MSM outlet ran the story. Then again, it waited a few weeks after the event occurred. I wish Pelosi would impeach these thugs, but she won’t because she’s just as spineless as the Chickenhawks

Like powell was in afganistan in july before 9/11….just routine, right?

  17. stateofthedivision says:

Mr. Evil, to continue the theme:

While Dick gets Wood at the prospect of waging war, do you think George will pull a Harry at the RNC? (Harry Truman called his do nothing Congress back into session at the 1948 DNC)

  18. Marie says:

Were this another time, I would be skeptical of such information, but we are talking about Dick Cheney — we also know that Karl Rove was nearby in the week before the fighting began — so I fully expect that this is entirely possible — in fact, probable.

The neocons, for their long-planned program to turn us into a one-party nation, dominate the rest of the world by defeating them militarily and economically, there is every reason to believe that they would stop at nothing to keep their present status well on the path toward their ultimate goal.

  19. Styve says:

Why is Cheney being allowed to go to Georgia unescorted?

  20. Marie says:

Cindy McCain is headed there for a photo op with wounded Georgian soldiers.
Cheney is flying there on Labor Day so he will be conveniently out of town for the convention, and will be able to advise Georgia on its next steps in keeping this fired up so McCain can claim some kind of upper hand.

Trust no one in this administration. No one. Look for ulterior motives, personal gain. Do not believe what they say.

come on gigi 8, post your name and mailing address, and include your phone no. You don’t want to be an anonymous blogger do you?

I emailed this little twerp and told it you had challenged it to post its real name, etc., bobwurst. I told gg that I would post its real email address here and encourage you all to write messages directly and load up its inbox.

Gave it some time to come clean here but it’s a big chicken.

So here is the email address for gg –

    goodgolly2008a@yahoo.com

I will cut and paste this message into the next couple of threads just to make sure that it gets good exposure and then we can start sending endearing messages to this putrid, cowardly little troll.

photo op with the troops sounds apropos…

“and now, from the wildwest, Miss. Buffolo. CHIP!” yay!

Yeah, i was wondering about that. I flagged bo, that is wrong no matter how much gigi is a pain.

  31. Shayne says:

I suspect he’s just trying to gather our emails Bobwurst.

  32. Styve says:

Hadn’t thought about his attire, but a muzzle sounds appropriate! If Rumsfeld risked international arrest for war crimes, one would think that Cheney would be afforded the same respect.

  33. tanglewood says:

This further demonstrates how lazy, moronic, and frightened our press is here in the US. This whole story broke 2 weeks ago and was published in The Times of London (of all places, as it is owned by none other than Ruppert Murdoch). Yet the lazy asshats in the media here never touched this or picked up on it.

Further, I read a snarky piece over at Wonkette and thought it was a joke until I saw the source was TTOL–when I clicked to the article I couldn’t believe what I was reading–but since it was Cheney, I wasn’t surprised…talk about evil and sick!

    Liberal media, my arse.

  34. katy says:

    hiya shayne…

what do you mean “gather our emails”?

    what’s going on?

  35. Zimzone says:

    Cheney’s response…SO?

  36. Shayne says:

Really though Bobwurst, we don’t even want to talk to Gigi here, why would we email him?

  37. LibertyLover says:

I seem to remember Rove making a very public statement that Iraq wouldn’t be an issue in the 2008 elections. Perhaps PNAC and Cheney’s minions had other plans?

  38. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Why has the Georgian military budget increase from $15M in 2002 to $900M in 2008. Were the Georgians getting ready for some tiddly-winks with South Ossetia and Abkhazia? What were the Israeli military forces and the American military forces training the Georgians for anyway? More games of tiddly-winks?

Is Saakashvili the grandson of Joseph Stalin? Or does he just like to strut around like our bully-boy Bush?

The Soviet dictator Joe Stalin supported the “territorial integrity of Georgia.” So why are Bush, Cheney, Rice and McCain following the imperial wishes of a Soviet dictator?

    P. S. the cold war with the Soviet Union is over; let’s leave it over…Russia is just another capitalist country, with a heavy-handed leadership, kind of like the USofA, but no as bad in the 21st century. The Russians have merely responded to Georgian aggression against South Ossetians and Russian peacekeepers stationed there.

  39. 49erDem says:

    Bushie: “Cue the conspiracy theorists…”

Right. That’s what the Bushies said five years ago when people suggested that the anthrax was created by our own government.

  40. stateofthedivision says:

As usual, the government threat was compartmentalized to a rogue employee.

Nothing systemic going on here. You people move away…

  41. stateofthedivision says:

How many days did Georgia shell the capital os South Ossettia before Russia responded in force?

Note: Russia obviously was ready. You can’t move that kind of manpower and armaments on super short notice.

  42. k says:

Yeah, Cheney & McCain REALLY want to play war with Russia next – that’s obvious – what scares me the most regarding Russia/Georgia is the business as usual attitude of Nancy and the rest of our useless tax dollar sucking reps in DC. Yes, I know the DNC & GOP corporate funded lobby love fests are super important to our freedoms but this shit Bushco’s pulling in Poland kinda sorta seems like something that our “experienced” politicians should be dealing with…like NOW. – ooops sorry folks, am I being too devisive? Also I saw an article online the other day and now I’m completely confused-

(It is common for the White House to send security, policy, communications and press aides to each site the president and vice president will visit ahead of the trip, to begin making arrangements and planning the agenda.)

Unfortunately, there were no dates given on this chance encounter.

    However…

Rove went to the Yalta Suumment and meet with foreign dignitaries in July of 2008…

  44. A Patriot Acting says:

Cheney was also involved in talks with Musharaff in the weeks before Mushy suspended the Pakistani Constitution and had political rivals arrested. He was also in close discussions with Musharaff prior to the assasination of Benazir Bhutto. This scumbags fingerprints are all over so many criminal acts from illegal military aggressions to the plundering of the US Treasury and dividing it up with his Haliburton and oil buddies and meddling in internaional conflicts not in a diplomatic vein but as a divisive influence in war and death for his own personal reasons and at the behest of the neoconservative agenda. This criminal does not act in the interests of America and it’s people. He is a traitor to this Country and deserves the ultimate consequences for his treasonous acts. Nancy Pelosi deserves to rot in prison for the rest of her pathetic life as well for her complicity in his crimes by not bringing impeachment charges against him despite the volume of evidence against him. Her job is to protect the Constitution and this nation from international AND DOMESTIC THREATS. HAS THERE EVER BEEN A MORE DIRE OR CREDIBLE THREAT FROM WITHIN THIS NATION AS THE VICE PRESIDENCY OF RICHARD BRUCE CHENEY?

  45. desertflower1 says:

And why did Rove take a “vacation” to Crimea in July??????????
