Reuters reports that Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has said the United States asked the Iraqi government for permission to maintain a troop presence there to 2015 before negotiators finally agreed on a compromise to limit the authorization to 2011. “It was a U.S. proposal for the date which is 2015, and an Iraqi one which is 2010, then we agreed to make it 2011. Iraq has the right, if necessary, to extend the presence of these troops,” Talabani said in an interview with al-Hurra television. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki recently called for a “specific deadline” for U.S. troops to leave Iraq.
Excuse me, why does Iraq have “the right” to extend our troops? It’s time to leave, NOW!
PEACE
August 27th, 2008 at 9:51 amPerhaps that enormous embassy BotchCo built could be expanded a little more to cover the entire country. That way, we could just retreat to the embassy grounds and technically be gone but still control the oil…
Or perhaps it was intended to be the Middle East’s first and the world’s largest Walmart…
August 27th, 2008 at 9:54 amThe Neo-Conservatives want endless war for the profits of the military industrial complex and oil company executives. These people are war criminals.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:12 amObviously, the permanent political campaign calculated 2015 could mean the boys come home under a Republican Presidency. They sure didn’t want Obama bringing home our troops. I think they’re hoping for the Bush brother.
Come and listen to a story about a man named Jeb
A rich electioneer trying keep his family red
Then one day he was shooting at an Iranian fool
And up through the ground came a bubbling crude
Oil that is, Black Gold, Texas Tea
Well the first thing you know ole Jeb’s a kajillionaire
Kinfolk said Jeb move away from there
Said the Beltway is the place you want to be
So they loaded up their seven houses and moved to D.C.
The White House that is

Iraq for the Iraqis!
GET OUT OF IRAQ-NOW!
August 27th, 2008 at 10:16 ammcRAISING mcCAIN will have troops in Iran, Georgia, Ossetia, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Afghanistan and Pakistan by 2011.
That’s one good reason to not vote Republic in November.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:19 amLet’s see — 2008 plus 7 years = 2015. Setting thins up for the 2012 election? Blame the entire Iraq debacle on the Dems so we elect a rethug for president. I guess they think we all have memory issues. Keep telling lies until the public believes it? I don’t think so!
August 27th, 2008 at 10:19 amAnd a McCain Administration would seek to extend it until as much as 2109?
August 27th, 2008 at 10:20 am#7 sorry for math error. seiitng things up for the 2016 election.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:20 amAs Keith Olbermann says, “And the point of the war in Iraq is to make sure there is a war in Iraq.”
Every month spent in Iraq makes millions more for Haliburton, Black Water, oil companies, refineries and the War Machine. It boosts stock values for military contractors which in turn pads the stock portfolios of scores of politicians in both parties. All for the cost of 10 billion per month borrowed from China that will inevitably become a strenuous burden on the backs of generations of working class America.

Fantastic post. Really spells it out. just a recommend didn’t seem like enough.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:25 amHow irresponsible of the Bushies — isn’t it bad enough they have allowed this GD War on Iraq to fester for almost eight years. Now they want to make sure it extends out past their administration for another almost eight years? They got us into this frickin’ mess and they should get us out of it BEFORE they mercifully HAVE to leave office. Anything less than that is obscenely irresponsible and reprehensible. I do “hate” these asshats.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:28 amThanks Fred (blushing)
I am confident that President Obama will be more open to accomodating Maliki’s original request for a 2010 withdrawal.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:29 amHey OT but the posters here ,present company excluded ( I hope)are posting more personal insults , thinly veiled profanity and name calling then anything of substance .
August 27th, 2008 at 10:31 amPerhaps it’s the conventions and fast approaching elections but it seems to me civil discourse will win a lot more converts than adolescent pissing matches which that will do very little to unify democrats around the presidential candidate . Other democrats and left leaning posters are routinely insulted for having differing opinions .
Clean up the site TP ,the quality of the posts here is slipping .
freeman Says:
You’re right, it’s off topic and out of line. We don’t need a hall monitor. People posting here that draw fire are usually posting for that exact reason…..what is your motive?
August 27th, 2008 at 10:36 amWar started March 2003, let’s see:
2015-2003 = 12 years of a war and spending…which was supposed to be a cakewalk, costing us only 30 billion dollars, payed by Iraq oil revenues,as we were told.
May be McWar was right when he talked about 100 years in Iraq.
If it took that long to stay in Iraq, how long will it take us to stay in Iran after we have a war with Iranians ?
August 27th, 2008 at 10:36 amMcCain has no answer to that. How could he, when he does not know how many homes he owns.
Fred , I think therefore I am . .sorry.
ps. just put my Obama sign out on the front lawn , even though I find the democrats thoroughly disappointing .I guess I’m worthy of insulting and name calling now , for not toting the party line well enough and falling in ,lockstep ,behind the candidates who are partying tonight with the telecommunications and energy lobbyists, but it’s the best you’ll get from me .
I recently had a conversation with a conservative who told me that I should leave the country and questioned both my sources and my patriotism .Here because I do not believe in a government which is owned outright by AT&T and Exxon I am labeled a troll , despite my being a poster here for 2 1/2 years .
Your either with us or against us , is that really your opinion Fred ? Then I submit ,you have more in common with conservatives than you would like to admit .
Intolerance for anyone who doesn’t tow the party line COMPLETELY !
Where everybody thinks the same , no one thinks very much .
August 27th, 2008 at 10:37 amTry reading down the brooks thread a little while back if you can stomach it and tell me that the likes of a Bill oreilly can’t use such garbage against the democratic party and the progressive community.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:40 amOh and I beg to differ apparently a hall monitor is exactly whats needed here .
Or manners.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:41 amfreeman Says:
Well, your first post here was about people throwing insults instead of in depth discussion. I found your posts so far to fit your own description to a T.
Got anything relevant to add to the discussion? save your party line whining, it doesn’t count.
What do you think about why and for how long we are destined to be in Iraq? Did you read A Patriot Acting’s post @ 10? I found it to be exactly what you describe as missing from this forum.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:42 amFreeman, perhaps there are some (many?) posters here who cross the line on occasion. But that’s the beauty of TP – they don’t have to moderate the discussion and suppress free speech like the rightwing blogs.
Many lifelong and loyal Dems are working through issues right now. Some think the Obama campaign has been too passive, some think Obama’s platform is too centrist. I doubt there are many hard core Dems who agree with everything Obama (or Hillary, for that matter) says or does.
As I tell my kid, you can’t control what others say or do, but you can control how you react to it.
PEACE
August 27th, 2008 at 10:44 amPunch up my name on the little search bar on the top of this page and tell me why I’ve been a regular poster here for years , Fred .
August 27th, 2008 at 10:44 amWhats my motive ? Are you questioning my integrity friend ?
You seem to corelate unity with intolerance. There is much more diversity in our party than there is in the republican party. If you have a real point I wish you would make it because so far you just sound like someone who is bitter and is lashing out.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:46 amThas all right, freeman… TP is a big place… allus enough room for a little self-pity early in the day.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:47 amNo, I’m questioning your motive. What do you hope to accomplish by coming into the thread on the attack and then when somone responds in a reasonable way you increase the intensity of your attack and then finally fall back into defensive mode.
Do you want to discuss matters or not. So far you have done nothing constructive for this thread. You have just driven up the post count to try to appease your bruised ego.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:49 amThanx bro but it has more to do with the effectiveness of the site than with self pity .

**FLAGGED** CONCERN TROLL
Republicans lecturing others on manners – THAT’S RICH.
You repubs are so civil in the most dangerous way.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:55 amOk freeman, if it has to do with the effectiveness of the site then why is this site so sucessful just the way it is?
I would add that the right does not need to use our own words against us, they will make up what they want to use anyway and the media will help them get it out there so that’s not really an issue.

Thanx bro but it has more to do with the effectiveness of the site than with self pity.
No thanks bro, our site is very effective, and you are a pollutant. Satisfy your ego elsewhere. You seem to be at ease with the massive problems this country is facing to fail to understand where we’re coming from.
August 27th, 2008 at 10:58 amTrolls ?
August 27th, 2008 at 11:00 amPerhaps filling a thread with profanities, personal insults and name calling are good debating skills but to any other observer they appear as what they are ,rude adolecent bullying .
Whose the troll ?
I’m afraid McWars is right, you are. I am through playing tiddlewinks wit ya bro. Get real or get flagged.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:04 amGood advice mom , thanx for the kindness , the world could use a lot more of it . Peace
August 27th, 2008 at 11:06 amFreeman, I read down the thread to where you posted your concern and could find nothing offensive.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:06 amAs long as the official US military stays in Irzq, so too will the contractors and mercenaries (as in KBR is a contractor, Blackwater is a mercenary outfit). I wonder how they will be managed by Obama, assuming the 16-month plan goes into action.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:07 amWill they draw dawn with the rest of the regular troops or will they actually be needed more, as it were, to support the draw-down? Tricky.

August 27th, 2008 at 11:14 amThe wholesale contracting of the military, other than the fighting soldier, will take decades to undo.
They can’t even recruit the warrior, much less the plethora of support positions that would be needed to bring those functions back inside the military.
Parts of the AirForce are next for privatization. BlackWater is building its own private air force. General Dynamics just announced the purchase of a private fleet in Europe.
If principled people inside the Air Force are holding up the Bush/Cheney tactical nuke hand, then they’ll do a run around.
It’s much easier to get a profit oriented entity to pull the nuclear trigger as “they’re just pleasing the customer and making money for shareholders”.
Hopefully we can make it through the next five months without another Bush/Cheney war, but getting contractors out of the U.S. military? That’s a very long term prospect.

I’m not sure what you are asking. I am an anonymous poster who recently found this site. I havent posted here before I used to post a lot at Media Matters under the nick solon. I obviously know who those people are may Joe Hills murdered soul rest in peace his IWW never had a chance mores the pity. Is that what you were asking? I am a seriously lefty liberal, I advocate taking the gloves off with the wingnuts and giving them back what they dish out. If a conservative wants to be reasonable and talk I hope that is encouraged. Reruns of the Rush Limbaugh show and attacks on Liberals and Dems (unfortunatly not the same thing) ought to be met with fierce treatment. Its time we fought back. If they want to talk good, we have the better ideas if they want to take the conversation into the mud I say we follow them there. Thats just MY take.

I know I have read it. Feel free to be however you WANT to be. We TOOK the rightwing venom for a decade and tried the high road. It got us seen as weak. That may be a decent way to live life in GENERAL, but when ATTACKED by someone who isnt going to stop as in todays rightwingnuts. That is a prescription for taking an ongoing beating. Take whatever beatings you want. That is YOUR choice. When you begin to denigrate me for MY choice that will be a different matter.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:30 amIraq has the right, if necessary, to extend the presence of these troops,”
WOW!, where’s the wingnuts’ heads exploding and blowing lunch all over the media over foreigners having control over what US troops do? IOKIYAR rules!!
August 27th, 2008 at 11:31 amEugene Debs
All were great union advocates at a time when brute force was used freely against them. Many were inprisoned or killed. Bill Haywood for one was killed publicly to make their point.
These men and their efforts usered in the sucessful union era that followed.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:33 amAm I missing something here?
August 27th, 2008 at 11:38 amWTF does last night’s Brooks thread and subsequent RHF spewing vile posts (surprise) have to do with the fact that Bush wanted to extend the troops until 2015???

What’s weird about this is there haven’t been any trolls here ***cough…*** this morning, and most of the language has been pretty clean. Last night?? That thread w/ RHF on it… I usually just split when the food fights break out.
Free speech is a strange and mysterious thing, and far from perfected.
August 27th, 2008 at 11:38 amTrue Haywood and Hill were murdered. Gompers I believe died of old age but was I believe President of the AFL, Haywood and Hill were in the dirt organizing and it got them killed. Been a UTU, that is Transportation Union member for 31 years. We need more brave union men like them and Harry Bridges of the ILWU though that was much later.

I like what Aaron Sorkin wrote about that in the speech at the end of the movie An American President. He said America aint easy its ADVANCED citizenship. If you believe in free speech you have to be willing to support someone advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend your life opposing at the top of yours, or as Chomsky said even Hilter and Staling supported speech they agreed with.
