Via Matt Yglesias, MSNBC pundits this morning discussed potential running mates for John Mccain and whether there is a “glass ceiling” for unmarried individuals in politics. After Andrea Mitchell floated Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL) as an example, Joe Scarborough noted that Crist is engaged. Chuck Todd suggested the engagement may be staged so Crist can be Vice President:
SCARBOROUGH: Did he get married? I thought he was engaged. Is he engaged or did he get married?
TODD: After Friday the engagement might be off if he’s not the running mate., right? … I don’t know!
(Laughter)
Watch it:
As the group laughed, Andrea Mitchell remarked, “That is so mean.” “Wow,” said Scarborough.
Todd is a terrible, just terrible replacement for Russert.
August 27th, 2008 at 12:22 pmMeeeeow!!
August 27th, 2008 at 12:23 pmHow the FCUK does anyone watch that shit without their head collapsing like an empty balloon?
August 27th, 2008 at 12:23 pmMcWars, I completely agree.
Todd gets way too much airtime to fill with empty headed jabs. He reminds me of David Brooks. Not in looks, but content.
Andrea Mitchell? Isn’t she married to Henry ‘I could phuck up any economy’ Paulson?
August 27th, 2008 at 12:24 pmI still haven’t figured out why Joe is even on MSNBC.
August 27th, 2008 at 12:25 pmRespect marriage… unless you’re McCain, Giuliani, Craig… not just a GOP issue but it is one.
Besides, if I were Gov of Florida I’d love to be unattached.
August 27th, 2008 at 12:26 pmRight on, Zimzone.
I think you meant Alan Greenspan. You could give him the same middle name. Maybe tweak it: ‘I defend phucking up any economy’.
August 27th, 2008 at 12:27 pmgee thanks for “reporting” this…..
i think i’ll have to keep away from TP until they stop posting this kind of nonsense…..

It never seems to occur to these yahoos to pick someone (for anything) based on their qualifications.

August 27th, 2008 at 12:38 pmAnd this segment is news because… why?
I thought you told us a few days ago that you were “off to cover the convention in Denver”, TP. And so far I’ve seen nothing.
I’m heading over the TPM where perhaps I can get some actual convention coverage and dialogue, not these vapid, homophobic headlines.
PEACE
August 27th, 2008 at 12:40 pmIt will be a great day in American politics when our media focus more on what a candidate (or potential candidate) would do if elected, and what his/her qualifications FOR THE OFFICE are — instead of zeroing in on their religion, their marital status/history, whether or not they wear a flag pin, quotes and YouTubes of everybody they have ever known in their lives, and how much they spend on haircuts, shoes, and clothing, and how many houses they have.
I didn’t catch Morning Joe (because I never watch it) — as long as Charlie Christ was being discussed, did anybody actually say anything of substance about him? Like his stance on issues, for example? THAT would have been refreshing.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:00 pmIf Chuck Todd is suggesting that sun tanned Charlie Crist is gay, don’t you think that that is something that the Reich wing voters should know?

August 27th, 2008 at 1:01 pmHow funny. Republicans have been winning elections essentially by being nasty a-holes for decades now. Let one pundit get nasty to a republican and our delicate sensibilities as liberals are viciously assulted. We want NO part in this winning elections thing!
August 27th, 2008 at 1:02 pmIt’s not that Crist is gay. It’s that he’s another vicious GOP hypocrite, living privately as a gay man while in public life doing everything he can go keep gay people as second-class citizens (or worse). Meanwhile, everyone in the MSM knows that Crist is gay but goes along with his charade so he can keep his facade of propriety as he smears gay people everywhere. So much hypocrisy and dishonesty makes my head spin.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:02 pmIt is pretty well known by most people here in Florida that Crist is a closeted gay man. Most people do not care either way. The sad part is how Crist has to lie because the pathetic right-wing base cannot openly support any gay person for any position. It makes you wonder why any gay person would ever support their party under any circumstances.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:11 pmIf Charlie Crist is gay, not that there’s anything wrong with that, why would we want to help McCain NOT pick him.

My point, exactly.

August 27th, 2008 at 1:15 pmAndrea Mitchell? Isn’t she married to Henry ‘I could phuck up any economy’ Paulson?
She’s married to Alan Greenspan. But same thing.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:18 pmMean?!? fkuk that… we’re living in a time that it’s “mean” to suggest that someone may be gay, but perfectly acceptable to suggest that a US Senator & wife are “terrorists.”
August 27th, 2008 at 1:29 pmwell that’s some shtt.
Shayne,
My answer to that question would be because Crist is a very good politician, and could possibly help deliver Florida for McCain. He’s known for being a very moderate Republican (so would help McCain present himself as the centrist choice), and on social issues, Crist is pretty liberal. He’s a “Republican” in the Arnold Schwarzenegger mold (much more pro-environment compared to the average Repub, more liberal when it comes to issues like gay marriage, gay adoption, or abortion).
I’d much rather see McCain pick someone like Romney personally. Picking Giuliani, Pawlenty, or Rob Portman would be even better for Democrats.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:29 pmTodd is suggesting that engagement of Crist is conditional to being seleceted as VP nominee.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:35 pmI feel sorry for the girl that got herself such a sour political deal, unless she is compensated for being part of the deal making process, and the total engagement camouflage.
Somebody should tell Crist that he doesn’t have to get engaged. He could just become a Democrat instead.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:45 pmBrianFL Says:
Point taken, but if he IS gay it would be fun to watch all those evangelical heads explode.
August 27th, 2008 at 1:49 pmWhy isn’t Daryll on this thread?
August 27th, 2008 at 1:50 pmCharlie Christ’s engagement is a sham……He’s a homo ppl!Pls Charlie, come of out the closet. Not only would it shock Florida into the 21st century to deal with it’s own lack of diversity and bigotry, but he would also be doing the gay community a favor….moving in a positive direction. His fiance is the heiress to the largest Halloween Costume Co., and apparently the division she oversee’s are the naughty costumes…mmmmmmmmmm Yum!
August 27th, 2008 at 2:37 pm“Republicans hate facts”,
That is basically the entire Democratic Party’s position though. They don’t support a religious ceremony for a “gay marriage”, but they support a legal recognition, aka gay civil unions.
That doesn’t make Obama a “Manchurian candidate”, a DINO, or “unprogressive”. It makes him a mainstream Democrat.
August 27th, 2008 at 2:59 pmHow come when I think of RHF, I also think of Pavlov’s dog?
August 27th, 2008 at 3:32 pmI don’t think Todd is so bad — I was not a fan of Russert, not at all. And his son is proving to be even worse as he gets his seat with the pundits at the convention.
As for Crist, didn’t we all think that his engagement was a farce? Reminded me of Elton John years ago. Or Rock Hudson.
August 27th, 2008 at 4:18 pmRepugs will not tolerate a homosexual – that is one area in particular where they want all the government intervention and scrutiny they can muster — in your bedroom.
I agree that Andrea Mitchell may be correct in expressing displeasure at the schoolboy discussion, but she did not wrinkle her nose at the stench of repugs calling Obama a terrorist.
August 27th, 2008 at 4:19 pmI think Andrea is especially sensitive because of the rumors about her marriage to Alan Greenspan.
August 27th, 2008 at 4:27 pmMarie Says:
————————————————————-
Repugs will not tolerate a homosexual
That’s not exactly true. An incredibly large number of them are homosexuals. However, there are a couple of rules any gay Republican must follow:
1. Stay in the closet, and never, ever admit you are a homosexual, even if you are caught redhanded.
2. Denounce open gays and work feverishly to deny their rights as American citizens.
August 27th, 2008 at 5:16 pmHave to agree with those that state the clear hypocrisy here..what’s worse..to be tagged as gay or to be tagged as a terrorist? I’m getting so tired of the right wings hypocrisy such as Fox (faux) news complaining about biased coverage by the MSNBC..nearly knocked me out since O’really and Shananah are the worst biased newscasters I have ever seen! Seems like if you criticize MCcan’t or any Republican the whining starts but CNN, Faux News and MSNBC (with the exception of Keith Olberman)are all anti-Obama and you don’t hear his campaign whining…
August 28th, 2008 at 9:02 amNow, we all know that Crist is widely believed to be gay, but that’s not the only reason someone might announce a sham marriage and then call it off when it was no longer necessary. There could be all manner of kinks in the man’s plumbing that have nothing to do with being gay.
August 28th, 2008 at 5:12 pmMagic Dog- are you suggesting there may ACTUALLY be some other reason for his sham engagement? Like what? It’s beyond obvious what’s going on, and it’s infuriating to see another so-called conservative, republican politician who is a closeted gay man working to limit gay rights. I’m also of the opinion that remaining closeted and denying your nature leads to mental problems and deviant behavior. Like wide stances in public bathrooms. As for the civil rights issue…
As a supporter of gay rights but at the same time pragmatic enough to see there’s gotta be some compromise on both sides- I say give them all the RIGHTS that come with marriage, leave it up to the states whether or not they want to call it that. If two people love each other and have a ceremony, you’re married, no matter what the state says about it. It’s the rights and protections which are the key issue in my opinion. Understand that some change takes time, soon enough there will be a generation in power who grew up in a land where being gay was no big deal. It really isn’t. Once that attitude is pervasive in our society, there you go. 50 years ago you’d be ostracized- or worse- just about anywhere in America. These days you’ve got gay TV stars dressing straight men. Go figure.
