As a supporter of gay rights but at the same time pragmatic enough to see there’s gotta be some compromise on both sides- I say give them all the RIGHTS that come with marriage, leave it up to the states whether or not they want to call it that. If two people love each other and have a ceremony, you’re married, no matter what the state says about it. It’s the rights and protections which are the key issue in my opinion. Understand that some change takes time, soon enough there will be a generation in power who grew up in a land where being gay was no big deal. It really isn’t. Once that attitude is pervasive in our society, there you go. 50 years ago you’d be ostracized- or worse- just about anywhere in America. These days you’ve got gay TV stars dressing straight men. Go figure.

That’s not exactly true. An incredibly large number of them are homosexuals. However, there are a couple of rules any gay Republican must follow:

1. Stay in the closet, and never, ever admit you are a homosexual, even if you are caught redhanded.

2. Denounce open gays and work feverishly to deny their rights as American citizens.

As for Crist, didn’t we all think that his engagement was a farce? Reminded me of Elton John years ago. Or Rock Hudson.
Repugs will not tolerate a homosexual – that is one area in particular where they want all the government intervention and scrutiny they can muster — in your bedroom.

That is basically the entire Democratic Party’s position though. They don’t support a religious ceremony for a “gay marriage”, but they support a legal recognition, aka gay civil unions.

That doesn’t make Obama a “Manchurian candidate”, a DINO, or “unprogressive”. It makes him a mainstream Democrat.

Point taken, but if he IS gay it would be fun to watch all those evangelical heads explode.

My answer to that question would be because Crist is a very good politician, and could possibly help deliver Florida for McCain. He’s known for being a very moderate Republican (so would help McCain present himself as the centrist choice), and on social issues, Crist is pretty liberal. He’s a “Republican” in the Arnold Schwarzenegger mold (much more pro-environment compared to the average Repub, more liberal when it comes to issues like gay marriage, gay adoption, or abortion).

I’d much rather see McCain pick someone like Romney personally. Picking Giuliani, Pawlenty, or Rob Portman would be even better for Democrats.

She’s married to Alan Greenspan. But same thing.
