One Year Ago Today, Alberto Gonzales Resigned

bushgonzo.jpgOne year ago today, Alberto Gonzales resigned as Attorney General of the United States amid questions of his “competence to run the Justice Department” and “accusations of perjury.” As the Washington Post reported at the time, Gonzales was “one of the nation’s most controversial attorneys general since the Watergate era”:

[Gonzales's] resignation, submitted Sunday to President Bush and disclosed yesterday, removes one of the nation’s most controversial attorneys general since the Watergate era. He will leave behind a Justice Department battered by allegations that partisan politics has infected its law enforcement mission.

Gonzales’ departure from the Bush administration has done little to reverse the well-documented politicization of the Justice Department.

In recent months, his replacement — Micheal Mukasey — has refused to say whether he believes Gonzales politicized the department, has promised not to investigate officials who authorized the use of torture on detainees of the U.S. government, and has refused to review the qualifications of career employees hired by former loyal Bushie Monica Goodling. Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) said recently, Mukasey “hasn’t provided the balance that I had hoped for.”

In April, the New York Times reported that Gonzales “has been unable to interest law firms in adding his name to their roster” as a result of his performance as Attorney General. Gonzales found work — at least temporarily — in June, when he was hired to “provide assistance to a special master on a patent case.”

Gonzo may have resigned, but just when does his war crimes trial begin?

  2. Doc Rock says:

And he’s still not under indictment and still has a license to practice law!

  3. stateofthedivision says:

I’m surprised anybody recalled. Things are so hazy…

  4. Zimzone says:

    Gonzo like the Wind.

    Frankly, TP, I don’t give a damn!

Special Master? Ye gods… is Gonzo now, officially working for… Satan, Inc?

  6. scytherius says:

And with any luck a yaer from now he’ll be indicted for treason.

  7. Zooey says:

The best thing Gonzo ever did…

In other words, Gonezos departure has had no effect on the corruption of the Justice Dept, and now career employees are in place to wreak havoc for years to come. Mission Accomplished: there is no Justice.

There needs to be a house cleaning to replace everyone hired by MG. Since she was not only unqualified but also broke the law, none of those hired by her should be allowed to stay. If they are qualified, they should have to reapply and be accepted within the law.

  9. upside99 says:

I heard he is running second in the race to be Justice of the Peace in Crawford, TX. A busy job with all thise DUI and Spousal Abuse cases to work.

  10. QUALAR says:

Unfortunately, there isn’t a limit on the number presidential pardons, but there’s not enough ink in Washington to cover all of the criminals in the Bush Administration. By the way, can Sir Lies-A-Lot of Crawford pardon himself?

  11. Marie says:

My, my — look how far we’ve come.
Good-by to the old boss, hello to the new boss = same as your old boss – he just doesn’t look as stupid.

  12. Keith H. says:

I think that when you say ‘i don’t recall’ or ‘i don’t remember’ when in fact you do know and remember, is lying.

Indeed. Having been hired illegally they are technically working illegally.

  14. JMOHR says:

This is absolutely amazing considering how well other corrupt and fallen Republicans have fared after being forced out. Wonder why it is so different for Gonzales?

And yet nothing has changed. Mukasey has proven himself to be just as much of a Bush toady as Gonzales was.

A former AG should be able to interest any law firm. Maybe shrub could put in a good word for his former employee, but no one would take that to mean shit, and rightfully so.

    Good riddance to bad rubbish

If a president can “self-pardon” I think Nixon would have done so. My question is, can the president blanket pardon anyone and everyone, regardless of whether or not they’ve been charged with a crime?

    PEACE

There’s been a name change. It’s no longer the Justice Department, it’s the “Just Us” Club.

And it’s wielded to smack non-members.

    ___________

Unfortunately, I believe the answer to that is Yes.

This came up sometime in the last few months and some of us actually did a little research. I believe Nixon was blanket-pardoned by Ford, even though he had never been charged w/ anything after he resiged.

  21. Bob says:

Pardoned or not, anyone can be labeled an enemy combatant, imprisoned indefinately, and never be charged with a crime.

Now there would be some justice.

  22. Uncle Ho says:

Indeed, Ford granted a blanket pardon for any crimes committed or may have been committed by Nixon.

Which is why I voted FOR Carter.

  23. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

How many pardons can be handed out? I hope they come on a roll.

Providing assistance to a master in an arbitration case.

Perfect, as long as the service involves waiting tables.

  25. freeman says:

This man should be retiring in jail .He signed off on torture , domestic spying , extraordinary rendition , signing statements and the erosion of habeas corpus .All of which amount to treason !

  26. Anne says:

Is it wrong of me to want to ask Joe Biden if he still “loves” Gonzo…does he still think he’s “the real deal?”
