Cheney’s too-clever-by-half endorsement of McCain.

cheneylegion.jpgIn a speech today at the American Legion, Vice President Cheney said:

I realize the Annual Convention of the American Legion is not a political event, and I will not speak this morning about the presidential campaign.

Moments later, he said:

President Bush stood firm, along with a number of notably courageous members of Congress, some of them from Arizona. They knew a surge of operations was our big chance to get things right.

In 2001, McCain said he would have picked Cheney as Vice President had he been elected. Cheney told McCain he would have agreed to the job.

Update Note: The reason for Cheney’s coyness is because, had he endorsed McCain by name, he may not have been able to fully-fund his trip with taxpayer dollars.

whatb should have happened already is investigations should have already started and and surged these criminals into a court of law and convicted of crimes against the untited states…thanks a friggin heap pelosi for ur ur valient service to the bush administration

Given the disaffection of such a (allegedly) large fraction of Hilary supporters, McStain could win the battle of the snark by naming Condi as his Veep.

She’d have strong appeal. “White” voters could vote for McSame and at the same time assuage their ‘racial fairness’ paradoxes. Women, pissed at Obama, might also flock to the ticket with the notable woman Veep candidate, figgering (rightly) only a heartbeat, and he’s an old man…
It would be an enormous propaganda coup for the GOP for it to happen that the first woman AND the first non-White preznint were both the SAME, incompetent, gap-toothed bumbler, Condi Rice, a Republican?

Karl Rove only WISHES he’d thought of it…

As a Vietnam vet, I have to feel sad that the American legion will buy into ANYTHING said by BushCo. This has been the worst administration in supporting the veteran and that is the AL’s reason to exist!

  4. RUCerious says:

Would the Vice President please go huck fimself?

Thank you in advance, you gasbaggyprick.

  5. Bushie says:

McSame and Cheney for 2000! A match made in ???????????. At least the last seven years (if 9/11 happened under McSame) would have been more entertaining. I can see them now, standing at the urinal, trying to out distance the other in a pissing contest, or using a 0-1 in. micrometer to measure who’s was longer!

  6. dumbstruck says:

What’s going to happen to this clever infection when his term is over?

Is he just going to drift from American Legion Convention to American Legion Convention giving his clever speeches until he’s too insane to be out in public?

  7. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Ah, nothing like a surge of fascist, imperial aggression to make things right, in the colonies… Worked for the mad King George III of England, back in 1776, right, with his Red Coats trying to put down the separatists of the 13 Royal Colonies? Worked for the French colonialists occupying Vietnam, back in the early 1950s, can you say Dien Bien Phu? (The French troops were surrounded there and under siege from the Vietnamese).

Don’t bother mentioning the financial cost of two imperial occupations to the American taxpayers. Only some $3,000,000,000.oo per week, a bargain, huh? And what exactly do we get out of this? The knowledge that we are pouring $3,000,000,000.00 down a infinite rathole, with no end in sight. Bloody brilliant…

  8. sectionop92 says:

If the taxpayers won’t foot Cheney’s bill, I’m sure Haliburton, some big oil/energy outfit, Blackwater, a telecom giant or numerous other special interests would be willing to do it off the books. Because it’s not like anyone is going to impeach him at this point.

  9. stewarjt says:

They knew a surge of operations was our big chance to get things right.

That is to say, we, me completely screwed things up until now and it was our last chance to salvage anything. Thank you and look out I’m going hunting again.

  10. stateofthedivision says:

Ah, but the President stood firm, as he touched the backside of beach volleyball players at the Beijing Olympics. He was not so firm on the Russia retaliation against Georgia. And he was downright flaccid on Chevron’s gas field in Burma.

Did Cheney remind us of any ex-POW Arizona Senators?

  11. ignatov says:

It’s not at all clear that the surged “worked,” as McCain likes to say, or “is working,” as McCain says at other times. I hope he’s right. Let’s turn Iraq over to the Iraqis, bring the soldiers home, and tax the hell out of the oil companies.

    Up,

As a Vet and an ex-member of the Legion I feel as you do. However, all the members of the Legion are not as astute as we would like to believe. I lost my younger Brother and my best friend, both Bushco supporters, to the real Legionnaire’s Disease, commonly called “Another round, Sarge!” (And they weren’t referring to a shot for their pistol). It was not the fault of the Legion it was the weakness of the individuals involved. The point is that the Legion is not necessarily in bed with Bushco. As with any organization it is the individual that makes the whole, either good or bad.

  13. spencers mom says:

God forbid that Think Progress would stop this breaking Cheney speech news, but…

If there are any Democrats or Progressives or Liberals or Independents or disaffected Republicans who care, there actually is some news worth reporting:

Hillary Clinton just concluded the nomination of Barack Obama as the Democratic Party’s candidate for President of the United States of America.

Okay, now we can all go back to the big story of the day – Dick Cheney being a dick at the American Legion.

    PEACE

  14. Bob says:

Yeah, I’m sure he’s real scared of being accused of illegally using the office for promoting his party.

If you needed a chance to get things right, don’t you see that there was something wrong to begin with? The chance you had to get it right was a long three or four, maybe five years before that, dick.

  15. Buckie Boy says:

Darth Dick is a liar? So what else is new?

  16. Tenebrae says:

Same argument as when they outted Valerie Plame by saying “Joe Wilson’s wife” — perhaps technically correct, but totally corrupting and contorting the spirit of the law.

  17. MapleStreet says:

So he politicized a non-political event. And by his own admission, he knew that was wrong. SOP.

But did he bring some cookies ?

  18. Doc Rock says:

I think he was already over the line of the spirit of the law.

  19. CitiDC says:

    @Doc Rock

Something tells me that Dick could care less about following the rules – particularly over something so trite as political vs official events. Hell, he’s the Fourth Branch. What’s gonna happen, Scott Bloch going to intervene?

  20. Fool Zero says:

What the [expletive deleted] is Cheney, of all people, doing addressing a veterans’ organization? He, after all, is famous for having had “other priorities” than becoming a veteran himself.

  21. BlueProteus says:

“Note: The reason for Cheney’s coyness is because, had he endorsed McCain by name, he may not have been able to fully-fund his trip with taxpayer dollars.”

Golly, I sure am glad that some of my taxes are going towards this $hitheel’s travel, so he can spew even more idiocy.

  22. OleHippieChick says:

It’s to the Legion’s everlasting shame that they 1. invite DICK to speak anywhere, and 2. AL members don’t run DICK’s ass out the door wherever he shows up. What’s he done for you lately, boys? What’s he done for you ever? Nevermind. Have another shot and a beer.

  23. trollsbwild says:

Why do I picture the three of them in a circle with their heads up each others asses?

  24. Art says:

Gee! How can the republicans be sure who he endorses unless he mentions him by name?
