McCain: Iraq Is ‘A Peaceful And Stable Country Now’

madmccainweb2.jpgToday, Time Magazine published an interview with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) that it conducted aboard McCain’s campaign airplane. Reporters James Carney and Michael Scherer described McCain as “prickly” and “at times, abrasive” during the course of the interview.

Carney and Scherer noted to McCain that the Iraqi government is calling for a deadline for U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq even though McCain’s previously stated definition of “victory” — “a peaceful, stable, prosperous democratic state” — has not been achieved. The Arizona senator dismissed their characterization of the situation, saying that Iraq is “a peaceful and stable country now”:

Q: Some members of the [Iraqi] government have made it clear in the last month or two that they might want to withdraw before complete stability, before totally secure borders, before some of the completeness of victory as you described. Is there any change, do you think there is some wiggle room there because what you described with Petraeus was an end point that was rather complete — a peaceful, stable country.

MCCAIN: Its a peaceful and stable country now.

Listen here:

Here are some examples (from just this month) of McCain’s so-called “peaceful and stable” Iraq:

August 9: A suicide car bomb in Tal Afar killed at least 25 people.

August 24: A suicide bomber killed 25 people, including women and children, in Baghdad’s Abu Ghraib district.

August 27: A suicide bomber killed 28 and wounded 45 in Iraq’s Diyala province.

Moreover, while U.S. troop deaths in Iraq reached their lowest point since the beginning of the war last month, they are on the rise again. According to icasulaties.org, 20 U.S. military personnel have been killed so far this month in Iraq — up from 13 in July.

But this isn’t the first time McCain’s assessment of the security situation in Iraq has been off. Last May he said the northern city of Mosul was “quiet” despite the fact that a car bomb had killed three and wounded nine there the very same day.

Digg It!

And by the looks of that picture, one could add “unstable”.

Whoops, another ad hominem attack to ruffle DaleW’s feathers.

  4. KingCranky says:

Well then, it should be no problem for McCain to wander around in Baghdad, outside the Green Zone, lightly armed and with no security detail, just like the Iraqis themselves.

And if he doesn’t get kidnapped, or “disappeared”, and if he’s able to do so freely, with no threats of any kind, then McCain’s blather will be proven correct.

But if he’s not willing to do the above, then obviously, McCain’s words are, once again, just meaningless, easily-debunked, hollow drivel.

  18. Chris LeJeune says:

So, if McCain feels that Iraq is safe and stable, and that we can agree with the Iraqi requests for a timeline of pulling all of our troops out of Iraq – how is his Iraq policy any different now than Obama’s has been all along? It sounds to me like he is doing nothing more than agreeing with Obama?

Since Iraq is now a peaceful and stable place, Bush has more democracy to spread.

Here’s the logic tree in the Jerusalem Post:

Barack Obama-”The world must press diplomacy, otherwise Israel will feel need to strike Iran”

Condi Rice-”Diplomacy is dead, due to Russia Georgia crisis”

Therefore, Israel should act on their need and strike Iran.

George Bush-”We will defend Israel at any cost. Did I mention my freedom via war agenda?”

  23. COProgressive says:

Great! I’m happy to hear it!

Now, let pull our troops out of Baghdad and start bring them home. Their no longer needed and the Iraqis can handle their own security.

Bring the troops home and let’s see how well the “Surge” has done when there isn’t a platoon of soldiers on each block with gunships flying overhead.

    For more of the same,

McCain’s website claims that he hates war. A lie. He loves war. McCain was a war criminal in Vietnam: he bombed civilians. McCain has been a cheerleader for Bush aggession in the war on Iraq. He supports imperial US occupation of Afghanistan. He has chanted, “Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.” He supports Saakashvili’s slaughter of the South Ossetians: an act of Georgian genocide.

I figured McNumbNuts would use his little butt-buddy this way and attempt to step all over tonight’s speech at Investco. It is the ultimate sign of the desperation he is feeling right now as he watches the democrats unite behind Obama and p*sses his pants over the coming presidential and VP debates where he and his running-mate are going to get crucified.

Suicide bombers in Iraq are more about Sunni vs. Shiite than with AQ in Iraq (if they even exist). Once we leave Iraq, the Iraqi’s will take care of any AQ that may be there because they hate foreigners in their country and AQ is not there at their invitation. They may have used AQ for a while when they were fighting us, but once we are gone, so will AQ be gone.

You need to get on the new right wing band wagon and start spreading the word that we have achieved victory in Iraq and can now safely bring our troops home. If you don’t, it will look like you guys lost and are being kicked out of Iraq by the Iraqi government and the people of Iraq.

That all depends. If the Shi’ite-led government continues to crack down on Sunni frenemy groups such as the Sons of Iraq, it may drive these former insurgents back to groups such as AQI and ISI. So a strong majority government may actually be helpful to AQI rather than hurtful.

    McCain: A Question of Temperament

    By Michael Leahy
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Sunday, April 20, 2008; Page A01

John McCain cupped a fist and began pumping it, up and down, along the side of his body. It was a gesture familiar to a participant in the closed-door meeting of the Senate committee who hoped that it merely signaled, as it sometimes had in the past, McCain’s mounting frustration with one of his colleagues.

From what other Senators have said, the madder he gets the faster the fist pumps lol

Heh. Turns out that the only thing I regret about Hillary Clinton not getting the nomination is that, inevitably, John McObscenity would lose his temper at the debate and call her a “c*nt”…

Now, I’ll just have to imagine it. ;o)

  78. fletc3her says:

I think by any measure the amount of violence in Iraq is still far out of line. For example, the last car bomb with significant casualties detonated in the United States was in Oklahoma City in 1995.

  79. EugeneDebs says:

    robert verdi Says:

You should really think about the fact that suicide bomber after suicide bomber is attempting to destroy the people and nation of Iraq. AQI and company know the stakes and the existential threat majority government is to their very existence. Do you?
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I know more about this situation than a hivemind dittobot is ever likely to. I was saying AQ was never a threat to have any real power in Iraq back when THAT was you guys talking point. YOU should think about the FACT that there had never been a suicide bombing in Iraqi HISTORY before the invasion.

If the Nuremberg trial standards were applied Bush and Cheney would be HANGED. There was NEVER a morally justifyable reason to invade Iraq, the Iraqis want us gone and have for quite a while, its long past time to bring the troops home.

  80. stateofthedivision says:

CSPAN is talking about McCain’s VP declaration from Ivesco Field. Mike Allen from Politico said if McCain did it before the speech was over, it would be political malpractice.

He thinks they’ll reveal the name as soon as Obama’s speech is over.

  81. EugeneDebs says:

The agenda of the rightwing Neocons is trasparent. They will try to rewrite history like they did with Vietnam. They will STAY as long as they can then when a Democratic President brings the troops home they will start whining that we were just about to WIN in Iraq, whatever that is supposed to mean, as if you can WIN an occupation.

  82. scytherius says:

Hmm. then any chance we could send McCain back over on a fact finding tour without a guard or body armor?

  83. mark_scism says:

Republican doublespeak has been especially obvious over the last year or so… What’s up with that?

  84. desertflower1 says:

Well, good..Senator! Then what’s your rational for staying at all if it’s so peaceful and stable?? Time to bring them HOME!!

  85. IBTunion4obama says:

Oh, I’m so glad. That means we can withdraw all the troops and leave Iraq.

  86. stateofthedivision says:

Johnny boy wants them to head to Iran, since they’re in the neighborhood and all. Check out his latest attack ad against Barack. Iran is front and center.

  87. Winski says:

Humm, let’s see…is Iraq on ….don’t tell me let me think….duh…duh…duh…. Saturn??..Nope that’s not right….let me think….no, please don’t give me a hint…duh..duh…duh…another solar system?…no, thanks not right, dang it…uh..let me think…no…. I’ll have my staff get back to you with an answer for that…Next!!

This information is current as of today, Thu Aug 28 17:14:09 2008.
    IRAQ
    June 13, 2008

This Travel Warning updates the current security situation and reiterates the dangers of the use of civilian aircraft and of road travel within Iraq. This supersedes the Travel Warning of July 23, 2007.

The Department of State continues to strongly warn U.S. citizens against travel to Iraq, which remains very dangerous.
Despite recent improvements in the security environment, Iraq remains dangerous, volatile and unpredictable. Attacks against military and civilian targets throughout Iraq continue, including in the International (or “Green”) Zone.

  90. drago says:

Wow, if you listen closely to that recording McCain really seems out of it. He apparently is showing symptoms of senility. He needs medical attention. Kind of sad, really.

Yes John and everyone knows that after “pacification”, so was Vietnam, and German occupation, so was the USSR and etc etc…….

  92. mikeriley says:

I had actually heard that McCain is in the early stages of Parkinsons, but taking medication to hide the effects sometimes. In some ways I feel like that is just a rumor floating around, but when I see speeches like this I think about it.

  93. samemccain says:

John McCain continues to be more of the same and just as deluded as Geroge W Bush. Of course Baghdad markets are safe when you travel with 2 tanks, 50 troops and 2 helicopters …

This is another example that the “old world jounalism of Murrow, Cronkite and Rather is dead and buried. In the case of the Time Magazine reporter Ms Tumulty, she seems to think the finding out the who, what, where, when and how have been replaced with a steno pad, which she records what ABC said in rebuttle to the complaint of Congressman Kucinich. There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC. She takes what is handed to her and repeats it vebatim and then calls that reporting. I call is stenography. Lida Sohbet sohbet sesli chat Gelinlik Modelleri

Just checked out the “National Journal”. Just what I thought. It’s owned by a right winger, so no, it is not a credible source.

Besides, the last it reported on McCain was in 2006. No reporting in 2007 or 2008. I wonder why? Could it be because of all his pandering?

If you’re referring to Karl Schwarz’ articles, if they are true, how will we ever know unless the news media gets involved without bias? The military under orders not to speak out may never convey Karl Scharz’ expose’. Sesli Sohbet If Cheney was truly involved in 9/11 and protected in some way, then he’s being protected by what may be going on in the Caspian Sea area as well. That pre-9/11 August 10, 2000 article drives the point home to me that Cheney had a vested interest in the oil at the Caspian Sea area (before 9/11). Fx15 From all I’ve read in Schwarz’ articles, he claims the Taliban was working on a deal with Argentina with that pipeline in the Caspian Sea area and UNOCOL wanted the deal instead.
