Rove ‘Waffles’ On Whether He Asked Lieberman To Drop Out Of VP Consideration

Politico’s Jonathan Martin reports that Karl Rove called Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) “late last week and urged him to contact John McCain to withdraw his name from vice presidential consideration.” Citing three unnamed sources, Martin writes that Lieberman “dismissed the request” from Rove.

This morning on Fox News, host Megyn Kelly asked Rove to confirm the Politico’s report. Rove responded, “Sen. Lieberman’s camp denied it and so did my camp last night, so I guess Politico.com was wrong.” “Is that a non-denial denial?” Kelly asked. Rove said the Politico story “is not right,” but he refused to say whether he did indeed call Lieberman and what they talked about:

KELLY: Did you call him [Lieberman]?

ROVE: Uh, uh, the report is absolutely incorrect.

KELLY: Now you’re waffling. Did you call him?

ROVE: Uh. Look, I’m not going to get into who I call and don’t call. But this report that I called Senator Lieberman and told him, you call Senator McCain and withdraw from the vice presidential, is incorrect.

Growing more uncomfortable by the moment, Rove refused to answer Kelly’s repeated question about whether he talked to Lieberman. “Okay, not gonna go there,” Kelly finally conceded. Watch it:

Rove repeated throughout the interview that the Politico story was “incorrect,” but he never explained what those inaccuracies were.

Yesterday, columnist Robert Novak, one of Rove’s long-running propaganda peddlers, reported that “influential McCain backers, plus McCain himself, would pick the pro-choice liberal from Connecticut if they thought they could get away with it. But they can’t get away with it — and this has been made clear to McCain by none other than Joe Lieberman himself. ”

“Rove is pushing Romney so aggressively some folks are beginning to wonder what’s going on,” grumbled one veteran Republican strategist.

UpdateJonathan Martin says "Rove is incorrect" when he claims that both camps have denied the story. He says Lieberman's office has not denied it, adding: "I'm not sure what Rove means by 'my camp,' but I have not heard anything from him, others in Bushworld or McCain's campaign denying the story."

So, porky is pushing for HOT STUFF to run with McCain?

Good, Joe Biden could use a well-done, thicker, juicer steak.

  6. spencers mom Says:

And just how is Rove going to spin Romney's previous positions on choice, gay rights, universal healthcare, etc.?

If Rove is pushing Romney, you can bet that Romney paid him to do so. For Romney, money is the answer to any question. Well, that, and his magic undies.

  8. stjack Says:

so lemme get this straight. the first 'executive' decision a candidate makes, selecting a running mate, is too important to be left to mccain to decide, so rove is putting in his 2 cents. and the platform is too important to be left to mccain to write, so party staffers are writing it.

are there any questions he is qualified to decide?

Chuck Todd said on MSNBC yesterday morning that, if Crist isn't picked, the "engagement" will probably be off. The rest of the panel was shocked that he stated "what dare not be said."

It was actually pretty funny... you could see Todd trying to figure out how to get those words back in his mouth.

Face it. Whomever the GOP VP candidate is, that person is going to wind up POTUS. McCain would never make it four years. McCain's VP selection needs to be closely watched. This isn't simply a Veep...this is very realistically the (2nd) next POTUS.

  16. McWars Says:

Some people are out there shouting for Romney to get back into the fray. This is out of sheer regret. He "looked" presidential, but came unglued (remember that?) when a random reporter questioned his ties to lobbyists. And they think he can take Joe Biden?

You're better off going on tour with Rod Stewart, Mittens.

  17. MapleStreet Says:

    Dumb Question:

If Rove is acting and influencing Repub strategy behind the scenes (and lets face it, being in the middle of the vetting process is a pretty big position):

Then, wouldn't that mar his credentials as an **ahem** independent journalist on Faux ?

  19. spencers mom Says:

These non-answer answers and non-denial denials are exactly why Rove refuses to appear before congress. He, and his attorneys, know he would be held in contempt within his first five minute.

Rove wouldn't know a straight answer if he tripped over it. Straight is not his strong suit.

KKKarl is the new star of the Republican Kabuki Theater of the Absurd. I don't know which would be more fatal for McNumbNuts -- (1) picking Lieberman as a running-mate or (2) taking any advice that RoverBoy is peddling.

  25. Patty Says:

I think the lovely, syrup-slurping Mr. Rove is pushing an unexpected VP candidate: Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Romney's only plus -- besides that he could strap McCain on top of the station wagon before they head out on the campaign trail -- is that he's been "an executive," skills they see lacking not only in Sen. McCain but in both of the Democratic ticket members.

I think Rove would consider it amazingly trail-blazing to have a woman candidate, hoping to woo the three Sen. Clinton supporters who still don't see the light of day.

  26. McWars Says:

Sorry, Romney, the vp suite has one bed, big enough for only one wife.

  27. jpopphan Says:

Someone needs to keep an eye out for Megyn Kelly. I would bet that her days at Faux News are numbered, since she dared to question the great Karl Rove. She actually followed up on a question! No Faux News host does that!! Especially with Turdblossom!!!

Karl Rove.... is there any greater symbol of what's wrong with our democracy?

  28. VerbalKint Says:

The good news is that Lieberman won't listen to Rove. Not surprising, considering that these lowlifes are both traitorous scum.

It's astounding Rove is allowed to speak anywhere, given that he thumbed his nose at Congress & refused to show up. He should be arrested, not spewing his smears & being paid for it.

  41. LibertyLover Says:

Rove is the direct result of allowing a political dirty tricks guy to have power. He turns into a constitutional law-breaker with no sense of right or wrong. Everything is only a means to an end. And that end is winning for the elite few. Rove's vision of a permanent Republican majority was never going to be a reality, because the collective memory of the American people is that of justice, fairness and equality.

Rove is a traitor to the ideals that this country was founded on. He sold his soul long ago. Ultimately he is a weakling who will be relegated to the trash heap of history. His tactics may have succeeded in the past for the short term, but in the long term, his tactics will not be sustained.

  42. techsong Says:

Rove Is the biggest liar in politics. Why even bother asking him. He never tells the truth. If he denies it,I'm should it's true.

Lieberman is not a very attractive candidate. He comes across and an extreme opportunist. Wasn't he just the VP candidate on the democrat side with Gore? Talk about flip flopper. Changing parties for the same slot,,,Come on. Who does he think he's fooling.

  43. Paul W Says:

The only reason Rove doesn't want Lieberman on the ticket is because his pro choice stance has angered religious conservatives. But I'm sure if they asked him nicely to switch positions, Lieberman would oblige, it's not like he has any principles.

  44. A Patriot Acting Says:

I find it hilarious that the GOP (Fox and McCain's people)still puts so much stock in what the traitor says. Political mastermind? His biggest role to date has been involved in practically every criminal aspect of the disaterous Bush Administration! He may have succeeded in stealing two elections but at what cost to our Country? Permanent majority? How'd that work out Karl? This bufoon should be the laughing stock of the GOP for what he personally has done to their "brand name" but instead they hold him up as some kind of Svengali of politcal strategy. He destroyed McCain's political aspirations in 2000 and now is embraced as though he were McCain's long lost bastard son. This "genius" will eventually be proven to be the criminal that most of the Nation allready sees him as. I say keep on keepin' on FOX and McCain! This devisive traitorous criminal is just what the GOP goons deserve for themselves. Karl Rove, poster boy for everything that is wrong with the 21st century GOP!
