Scandal-Plagued Ted Stevens Endorses Palin For VP, Says He’s ‘Known And Worked’ With Her ‘For Over A Decade’

stevenspalinbig.jpgIn a statement announcing the choice of Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, Sen. John McCain’s campaign emphasized that “in Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system.” But that claim was undermined today when Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), who was indicted last month for not reporting gifts from an Alaskan oil company, endorsed her as McCain’s vice president. Stevens said that he had “known and worked” with Palin for “over a decade”:

Senator Stevens said: “It’s a great day for the nation and Alaskans. Governor Palin has proven herself as a bright, energetic leader for our State and will bring the same energy to the Vice Presidency. She will serve our country with distinction – the first Alaskan and first woman on the Republican ticket. I share in the pride of all Alaskans.

I have known and worked with Sarah for over a decade – from her service as Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, in her role as president of the Alaska Conference of Mayors, and most recently as our Governor. She is attentive to her job and family, brings people together, and is able to make tough decisions.

But Palin was unable to make a “tough decision” after Stevens, who had supported her run for governor, was indicted. In July, she told reporters that it “would be premature” to call for his resignation. She just wants him to give “a fuller accounting” of his relationship with VECO Corp., the oil services company that gave him unreported gifts.

Palin also has ties to VECO. When she ran for lieutenant governor in 2002, “she gathered $5,000 — or about 10 percent of her campaign fund — from Veco officials or their wives,” including $500 from CEO Bill Allen. Allen gave Stevens expensive gifts over the years, including “a new Viking gas grill and a new tool shed full of tools.”

Update TPM's Greg Sargent notes that Palin's website has now been scrubbed of Stevens' endorsement ad.

An endorsement from Ted Stevens for a candidate who bills herself as a “clean-government” person. No wonder Palin looks like that in the picture.

This is like a vegetarian getting an endorsement from Jeffrey Dahmer…

Democrats should be dancing in the streets over McCain royal SNAFU.

It seems that the GOP has completely given up and greeted the Demcrats as liberators. Maybe they don’t want to waste their money on their convention and will just punt – they should.

McCain should have asked Hilary to be his running mate; at least they would then have one qualified candidate running on the GOP ticket; which is not just scrap paper.

  6. dbadass says:

  7. nofltwlt says:

There is already talk of a Biden/Palin debate. Joe Biden should just state that Palin is totally unqualified to be VP and such a debate would be frivilous. If the GOP persists, then Biden should go ahead and debate McCain’s horrible choice as VP.

  9. Tim43 says:

Palin is an excellent choice for McCain.

She has more experience in Executive leadership than the democrats number one guy, Obama. She was already a mayor when Obama kicked off his political career at William Ayers house.

She represents real change, unlike Obama’s choice in Biden who has been in politics since 1972 … when Nixon was president.

She’s a governor who has run a state … unlike Obama or Biden. And 80+ percent of the population of her state have a favorable opinion of her.

She has a proven record of stamping out the good ol boy network and government corruption. Like the kind that persists in Chicago … Obama’s stomping grounds.

Hey, I can’t even remember what Obama said in his speach last night. Looks like McCain/Palin has stolen the show :-)

  10. the east beast says:

    This just keeps getting better.

    She has negligible political experience.

    She’s a Christocrat wingnut.

She’s currently under investigation in AK.

And now she’s been endorsed by Ted Stevens, which certainly doesn’t lend much credibility to the “reformer” image the Repubs are currently spinning.

    Fun, fun, fun.

Funny. You REALLY think many of your troglodyte brethern are going to vote for a woman? Im sorry, part of the core idealogy involved in being a backwards, white trash bible humper (i.e. the GOP base) is beleiving that women shouldnt run things. Doesnt matter how much they agree with you. McCain, a man with 3000 pages of medical records PER DAY for the last 20 years, just picked a woman as someone who could be a heartbeat away from the presidencey should he win. Say whatever you want, for every hillary supporter this gets mccain, there will be two biblehumpers who will stay home because they will be totally unwilling to accept the concept that they’d very possibly be turning the country over to a woman, no matter how much they agree with her. this is about the equivalent of the klan letting a black guy enter their organization just because he doesnt like black people either..

when her kooky trogylytle views and connections to the indicted criminal ted stevens come out, this will be even worse.

right now, mccains only hope is a false flag attack or diebold. period. im pretty worried about the diebold one, if its close, they can cheat and get away with it..

I really despise all of this talk about which party is more racist or sexist — yada yada yada. Let’s call the pick what it is – a very shrewd move that will capitalize and bring attention to a major mistake made by Obama (and that was not picking HRC). Left-wing democrats are one segment. Tack on those of any party who hate George Bush, and you’d find through archive searches a number of them having posted here. Then, we have our jealous trolls, and that’s where you fit in.

Sarah Palin? She’s under investigation for corruption. (She said it was “cool.”) She doesn’t even understand what the veep does. She does business with Enron-affiliated Smith Barney (quite the zing from last night, huh troll?). Read the threads in full. Don’t make your ignorance my problem, troll.

Not to mention, her nomination cancels out your contention that Obama doesn’t have enough experience. They key experience: National issues, which she sorely lacks. Sorry Timmy, the ball is further in our court.

Not that we need to weaken (expose) her. The GOP is already going to shit.

What do you have to say for yourself for destroying America, Timmy?

Cut out the crying while you’re at it.

  56. misshusseinmolly says:

I hope the trolls don’t hurt themselves tying themselves in logic knots. It’s amazing what happens when Republicans start spinning on the “experience” theme.

When Bill Clinton ran against Bush41 in 1992, he was roundly dissed by the GOP for being inexperienced because he was merely a governor, with no experience on the national or international stage. Never mind that several of our presidents had been governors (with no “national” experience) before being elected president, including Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, and Franklin Roosevelt.

Then when Bush43 ran against Gore in 2000, all of a sudden the GOP claimed his credentials as a governor trumped Gore’s experience as a senator and a vice president. Because Bush had “executive” experience. Which, apparently, was now more important than “national” experience.

When Obama announced his candidacy, the GOP called him inexperienced because he was still in his first term as a U.S. senator, and pointed to his political experience in the Illinois legislature as irrelevant.

But now that Palin is on the stage (who’s still in her first term as governor), her experience as a city council member and mayor of a city of 5,400 people is important because it’s “executive” experience.

This takes IOKIYAR to extreme levels. Are we really supposed to swallow all this hypocrisy?

Excuse me, dickhead. You’re not telling me anything I don’t already know. Spitting out a factoid from 40 years back, when anarchy was the norm, doesn’t change the fact that your insights are flawed.

You only care because he’s one of the few anarchists from that era who are publicized. He went on to realize professional success in the field of Education. What do you have to your name?

Not that I’d expect you understand the field of Higher Ed, being spoon-fed your perspective by Sean Hannity while on your guilt-by-association road trip, but university professors, teaching at the same institutions or different ones close by, have an obligation to civic engagement. Obama interacted with plenty of professors while fulfilling his duties as a lecturer and senior lecturer at the University of Chicago. Dr. Ayers taught nearby at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

what would give women any reason to vote for her?

McCain/Palin.. wow..the tag blended together sounds so much
like “McPain” it doesnst even need to be parodied. Your ticket sounds like a poorly packaged mcdonalds Happy Meal meant to appeal to S+M freaks. Which, actually, pretty much sums up the G.O.P these days

An “experienced” mummy whose claim to fame is not being able to dodge anti-aircraft fire, and who doesnt seem to know the difference between a sunni and shia, and a woman who thinks other women were created from a man’s rib.

    Good luck with that…

What about being unable to dodge anti-aircraft fire and geting shot down?

John McCain has done both of those.. heckuva ticket ya got there..

Er’ a professor? Big deal. Anyone who claims to be a liberal democrat and protested during the 60’s can achieve that position. ESPECIALLY if they demonstrated against America during the 60’s.

For some reason, demonstrating against America in the 60s elevates liberal hippies to hero status. And, the one’s who told kids to kill there parents get an even higher status.

William Ayers quote… “Kill all the rich people. … Bring the revolution home. Kill your parents.”

William Ayers distinguished? The guy never even apologized for the stuff that he did. If he at least apologized I would consede your point that it happened 40 years ago.

I beleive beck, limbaugh, malkin, savage, and several people involved in writing white house press releases have actually wasted their time and energy complaining about us TP’ers, actually. So while I dont pretend these guys actually READ or otherwise bother to learn about the things they complain about, we must be getting under some of thier underlings skin..

    Something is seriously wrong here.

The Bridge to NoWhere is the Brainchild of Alask’a only Representative, Don Young.

Funding legislation originates in the House of Representatives.

Sen. Stevens may have liked the Bridge to Nowhere, but it isn’t really fair to call it “His Bridge”.

In any case…due to a large dose of Scrutinty, this Bridge Proposal IS actually going NOWHERE.

  80. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Need I remind you that Ayers admitted to committing >terrorist acts against his own country?

Blah blah blah. The highest levels of our own government contemplated terrorists attacks against our own populace in order to advance their agenda. Its documented. Its undisputed.

Google “operation northwoods” and tell me what you discover.

You support people with more blood on their hands than can be imagined and yet you cling to these trivialities about random associates of obama and support people who are giving our taxpayer money to terrorists in iraq and asking them politely to stop killing our troops.

Always nice to see the trolls never taking the blinders off.

Where does anyone here or elsewhere say that they ‘love’ William Ayres? And do you have statistics as to how many people actually killed their parents at his request?

Something is seriously wrong here, but it’s your lack of any common sense or reflective thought.

  83. Marie says:

Why do repugs and trolls expect Obama to have never met anyone with a checkered past? They are the party of criminals, indicted and not-yet-indicted, yet are all those who shared a Senate with them, or met them at the gym, or served on a committee with them also to be condemned for even knowing the criminals?
That would be anyone who ever visited Bush/Cheney/Rove/ Libby/ et al. Round everyone up and make them defend that they even know these criminals.
For the record, William Ayers has led an exemplary life at the University, worked for schools, charities and causes to benefit the community, and is otherwise well-regarded. Obama served on a committee with him and once met him at a house party.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

And Obama was WHAT 10 when the Weather Underground set off bombs that killed NO ONE but themselves? No there isnt ANYTHING to this story by the time Obama even met the guy he was a respected professor. He was someone in the chicago political machine and he had a small fundraiser at his apartment. Its not like they were best friends or like Obama is touting him to be his Secretary of State. If you want to run for office you go to whichever fundraisers the political machine makes available. Why does this whole guilt by association thing apply only to Democrats? Bushs Grandfather had his assets siezed for trading with the Nazis under the trading with the enemy act. He was good friends with Kenny Lay. McCain was one of the Keating 5.
