Palin is seemingly unaware of McCain’s Iraq plan.

In an August 14 interview with Time Magazine, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK), now Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) running mate, suggested that McCain had not shared his plan for Iraq with her. Palin, who has not been to Iraq, said she does not know “what the plan is to ever end the war.” She later said its “tough” to “talk about the plan for the war” because her son will be deployed to Iraq this September. “Let’s make sure we have a plan here,” she said. Palin then added, “respecting McCain’s position on that too though.” Listen here:

Matt Duss notes that by trying to “make news with an unknown, stunt VP pick, McCain has shortchanged the issue which he himself insists is the most important — national security.”

Digg It!

It’s okay people, it’s okay. She was runner up in a beauty pageant. She’s qualified.

  3. misshusseinmolly says:

McCain’s handlers should know better than to allow their veep pick to face the press without a script. If she knows what’s good for her, she’ll learn all the official talking points and regurgitate them on demand. Just like her running mate — although she looks like she has a better memory.

  4. texaslady says:

Will be interesting to hear her opinion when her son is in harms way. I know mccain’s boys are in the military but no one seems to know where they were exactly.

  5. dasm says:

The most stunning remark by delusional McCain is that he says she’s “ready to be president”, while saying Obama is not. This must be the definitive proof that McCain is an idiot.

  6. Briseadh na Faire says:

Is she ready to lead from day one?

After all, she’d be only a heartbeat away from the Presidency.

  7. barkleyg says:

One good piece of news for McSHAME: She probably has NO foreign policy opinions, so there will be no Previous position she can be accused of flip fllopping from. You give this woman enough kool-aid, and she will probably spout anything you want!

  8. spencers mom says:

In all fairness to poor Sarah, how can she be expected to know John’s positions on issues when even he doesn’t seem to know from one day to the next?

What will be interesting is to see if he flip flops on this choice. After all, he’s changed his stance on virtually everything!

    Based upon what ?

You believe running a state with a population that has less individuals living in it than SIXTEEN US CITIES , gives this dope any type of insight into the economy (a subject McDepends has shown zero aptitude in) , along with her having exposure zero national issues ?

    Good luck selling that ………..

I agree all mccain wanted was a female, but look she is a lifetime member of the NRA and has 5 children one who is disabled. Sounds good to me. All she has to do is cut ribbons, and agree with mccain. How hard can it be ? bushie has done it for 8 years.

  16. Above the Clouds says:

McCain clearly knows more about Biden than his own pick, Palin. Is she really the pick Limbaugh and Rove vetted and approved?

  17. tom says:

I was glad to hear that Obama and Biden issued a joint statement describing Palin as an impressive person and a fresh voice (I am paraphrasing). The first “campaign statements” questioning her experience were unfortunate and apparently not official.

It is much smarter to just welcome her into the race. Give her a week or two and it will be abundantly clear that she is not up to the task.

From looking into Palin’s being investigated for her attempts to have her ex-brother-in-law fired as a state trooper, using her clout as governor, well, Palin invoked the Alaska version of executive privilege to withhold emails dealing with the case.

    http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?S=8802680

You certainly do have low expectations. Let’s see here:

A person who graduated first in his class at Harvard Law, a Constitutional law professor for 10 years, a community organizer, 8 years in a state legislature with one city with a population larger than the state of Alaska. Then 4 years as a Senator (he was elected in 2004 and it is now 2008).

    vs.

A former beauty queen who graduated from a generic college with a degree in Journalism who went on to spend four years as the mayor of a town with a population of 6,000 and then two years as Governor of a state with a population of 600,000+.

Yep, that beauty queen sure has it over the Harvard law guy.

Second year, served as President of Harvard Law Review
Taught Constitutional Law at University of Chicago for 12 years
    Illinois State Senate, 1997-2004
    US Senate 2005-2008

    Palin: Runner-up for Miss Alaska
BA from University of Idaho in journalism
    Wasila city Council 1992-1996
    Wasila mayor 1996-2002
Unsuccessful candidate for Lt. Governor 2002

The wingnuts have been claiming for some time that there is no “official” birth certificate from Hawaii and that he’d actually been born in some foreign country, with the fake certificate cobbled up recently. In order to believe this, of course, you have to ignore the fact that the State of Hawaii has confirmed that the certificate is real and legal.

  70. tom says:

I am asking WHY, EXACTLY, you think Palin is qualified.

Well that’s easy to answer — she has a vagina (or a c*nt as McNumbNuts would say.

Why, I even heard someone say on the radio today that she hoped Palin would be pictured breast-feeding her newborn. She just really thought that would send a powerful message.

After delivering five kids, that vagina of hers is probably somewhere between the size of a catcher’s mitt and the Al-Can highway. If she needs to show her qualifications, perhaps she can just pull a Britney Spears and go commando. When she is ignored in campaign planning meetings or stumped in a VP debate, she can just raise her skirt and flash her credentials.

It’s not about ANY female, it’s about Hillery…no matter what you think of her, she earned her way there in Washington and had the support of women that felt like she does on the issues. THIS WOMAN IS IS NO HILLERY!!!!Her choice by McCain to be VP shows not only bad judgement on his part, but is yet another slap in the face to women..there were many other much more qualified women to choose from that would have benefited him. This is a joke, and he’s made a mockery of the office. McShame is right!

  76. stateofthedivision says:

There’s NOTHING bad you all can dig up about this woman?

Might one expect the Governor of Alaska, an ex-mayor and long time resident to know the size of the ExxonValdez oil spill? On CSPAN’s Washington Journal she declared the ship spilled 11,000 gallons of fuel.

She missed the mark in two ways. It spilled 10.8 million gallons of crude oil, not fuel. The spill eventually covered 11,000 square miles of ocean.

Purposeful or accident? Only she knows. But recall she’s a fan of big oil.

And made the statement around the time of the Supreme Court decision on damages. Might an Alaska governor want to bone up on the details of the case before going on Washington Journal?

And it looks like the findings from the investigation into Palin’s influence in removing Walt Monegan from his position because he refused to fire Palin’s ex-bro-in-law will be released on October 31st. Unless the Alaska GOP is successful in scuttling the entire process.

As always in cases like this, the question is whether anyone can prove it. There are a couple investigations — one under the auspices of the state legislature and another of the state Attorney General, which she either supported or ‘requested’. That latter investigation already surfaced taped phone calls that forced Palin walk back her original denials and admit that her aides had pressed for the firings, just without her knowledge.”

I’ve asked before, but I’ll ask again, just who vetted this woman? If bloggers can dig up all of this in less than 7 hours, what the heck did the vetters do?

Not long for the ticket, not long at all…

    PEACE

  98. Shayne says:

Palin was a big supporter of Pat Buchanan in a year when he gave his most offensive speech ever against women and homosexuals. Chris Matthews said how could somebody have supported you when you made that insulting speech. Looks like there lots to dig up on her. Maybe that’s why the campaign is being pretty quiet today, hopefully they’re doing their homework.

  101. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I have to say that it has been a lot of fun today watching the trolls scramble for something to use re. Palin as VP. The best they can do is to say she is “more qualified than Obama”. That confuses me because she is not running for President. Shouldn’t they be comparing her experience to Biden? Or has the right given up on McBush and now considers Palin to be their presidential candidate? It’s all so confusing but also a lot of fun!

  102. Shayne says:

Chris Matthews is amazed she was one of Pat Buchanan’s Pitch Fork People, does anybody know what that means. He said he can’t believe any woman would support him after the things he said that year.

  110. stjack says:

hmm…will she be more katherine harris or more harriet meyers, that’s my question.

this has got to be one of the dumbest things mccain’s done, and that’s saying something. even if mccain thought he’d get some pumas by picking a woman, there’s no way this helps his chances. first of all, of course, pumas fundamentally disagree with mccain’s positions, and from what i’ve heard about them so far, palin’s positions. secondly, pumas are certainly not going to vote for a candidate who called hillary clinton a whiner and not a good representative of women in politics.

besides which, if mccain doesn’t speak for his campaign, and isn’t involved in finalizing the party’s platform, and disagrees with most of the major planks of the platform, then how likely is it that *he* made this decision himself? so then, how on earth could his campaign’s and advisors’ choice of a *woman* for a running mate reflect positively on mccain?

finally, we’re still learning about the nefarious and sundry ways cheney has manipulated the administration to benefit the industries with which he had connections. what connections does palin have *right now* that would be looking for a handout? she accepted campaign money from veco and bill allen, for one thing. her explanation of the whole state trooper firing rang very hollow; she practically admits guilt. besides, if it really were that simple, would her legislature still be investigating?

one the one hand, i think this choice was last-minute; either that, or they wanted to keep it *such* a surprise that they didn’t do any vetting or meet with her, to avoid raising suspicion. but then again, she’s known that she was in the running for a while at least.

  114. Bob says:

Two years is an awfully short time to be involved in two ethics scandals. She’d be replacing dick cheney? That’s really scary. FT

They’re going for the religious extremist vote. Abortion and ‘gays’ will suddenly be the only important issues. Oh, and flag burning. I think McCain will come out next week flat-out saying he’ll appoint ‘constitutional’ judges and will overturn RvW. Oh, and keep the ds from taking our guns.

  115. Shayne says:

I wouldn’t say she’d be replacing Dick Cheney, she’d probably be more like a marionette and he’d be pulling the stings but he’s going to be busy working both McCain and her.

  116. Crusty Old Bastard says:

I usually don’t stay awake long enough to comment this far down on a thread but after watching, reading, listening, and, I admit, laughing and yawning I have come to a conclusion. A happenstance that does sometimes occur rapidly and, in some cases, prematurely but nevertheless is always significant, if only of my ignorance. To state it simply, the GOPERs have led us all down the rosy path. The Dems have shot their wad; they have no more surprises. What we see–Obama/Biden–is what we are going to get. Not to complain at all because the ticket is as close to the best that we are going to get. But just think a moment, the GOPERs haven’t really lost all contact with reality, they haven’t played all their cards. They are still looking for the river card to add a little poker suspense. And, GUESS WHAT! Their convention doesn’t start until next week. I will venture to say that the McOld/McHo ticket is just a bunch of fooling around (pun intended) and when the real Mr. GOP Presidential Candidate and GOP Vice-Presidential Candidate stand up McSenile and McDrill are nowhere around. I would offer my usual odds of $20 to a glass of warm pee but I just can’t afford to win all that stuff.

  117. Zooey says:

Expanding on stjack @ 114, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Palin is the “new Harriet Miers.” Throw out the name of the least qualified woman you can possibly think of — to give yourself more time in Veepstakes — wait for the outrage of the left AND the right, and then she’ll pull her name from consideration “for the good of her family.”

After that, McDizzy could pick ANY old white Republican dude, and at least the right would heave a sigh of relief.

  118. Alecto says:

    Crusty Old Bastard,
And there is also the question of Ron Paul which I think will be the reason they postpone teh convention if they do. To just screw with their plans. Ron Paul ain’t going quietly into that good night.

The PUMAs are really only Operation Chaos Rush followers. Their Anti-Obama vitriole is only the Reichwing having a new venue through which to spew their bile and hate.

TRUE “Hillary” supporters ONLY WANTED HILLARY. They wanted her as Pres, and then when conssession was on the table, they wanted her as VP. NONE of the true DEM Hillarists would vote gender specific. It is anathema to the whole Hillary mantra. It was not HER gender, it was her capabilities, IN SPITE OF HER GENDER. To now think that these Hillarists would flock to a poor excuse for a Repuikkkicant Hillary, is laughable. To do so, is totally opposite of Hillary’s message and policies.

It is not the PERSON, it is the POLICIES for which the person stands.

We don’t care for Palin BECAUSE she is a woman, we don’t like her for her policies IN SPITE Of being a woman.

This will show the Hillarists of the true deperate straits the GOP is in.

Support Hillary for Supreme Court, and SCREW THE GOP for the next 20-30 years.

  119. Shayne says:

And the trolls think there aren’t any juicy scandals on McDrill. Should we make them wait Zooey?

  120. Bob says:

Knowing what I do of the BAC mentality, I can’t see them as getting excited at the prospects of having a woman as potential president and CiC. Hell, they don’t even allow women to become pastors, believing that a woman should submit to and obey her man.

I agree with others here who say that something else is going on behind the scenes. There is just no way that there will be a “McCain/Palin” ticket on the ballot on November 4th.

It appears that Palin was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it. Fancy that!

And even though she said “thanks but no thanks”, Washington sent her the money without requiring that it be spent on the bridge.

This year, she grudgingly scaled back the state’s earmark requests from over 54 to 31. Some “reformer”, huh? Not really. They’re not going to pay much attention to her feeble resume or that she’s a tool of the oil industry. She used her authority to harass her sister’s ex-husband? Yay! Good for her!

After decades of observation of the American voting public, I am convinced that most people vote purely on an emotional level — how else do you account for working class people voting Republican? If the Democrats make too much of this selection, it will backfire, because it will focus too much attention on a youngish woman rather than the mean old bastid who is actually running for president. Obama has apparently already figured this out, because he’s distanced himself from his campaign team’s criticism of Palin. McCain’s crew has artfully distracted everyone from the Democratic convention by offering up an obscure female candidate, just as everyone is on the convention high in Denver. If the Democrats pay a lot of attention to her, it only serves the Republicans. Best just to snicker and move on.

Other than her anti-choice beliefs and her clear lamprey-like attachment to the oil industry, she is a refreshing choice for the Republicans. She has virtually no baggage, no record, and, well, she’s a “she.”

What should be supremely scary is that the person who is one heartbeat from the Presidency is so obviously and completely unprepared for the job and that McCain has one foot in the grave. The Democrats need to find a way to remind voters of that while at the same time refusing to buy in to her 15 minutes of fame.

    I disagree.

After two terms of Cheney, and his unaccountable vice-presidency, it would be politically effective to ask voters if their interests would be well served with an inexperienced boutique candidate being given that kind of power?

Not Ready For Prime Time should be the general Palin theme.

It was quite humorous, He said he was so scared for the country that he was going to send McCain vitamins to try and keep him going in fear of her.

And, if the Palin stench rises to the national GOP level, they might decide to try a do-over, and get her to resign her nomination for the good of the party.

With all due respect, that’s because you see Cheney as Beezelbub, lord of the flies. I don’t think most voters are as conscious of Cheney’s influence as you are, nor that most voters are aware of Cheney’s weird interpretation of that annoying piece of paper. They do not understand how much power Cheney has usurped and it’s because they haven’t been beaten around the head with it. People knew about Agnew because he was much more public and because his crimes were widely publicized. Ditto, obviously, Nixon. Cheney? What news media have expended the effort to tell Americans about Cheney and his unitary executive?

Which is why, less than 12 hours after her name was announced, she’s already being referred to as the next Harriet Meiers.

I seriously doubt there will be a McCain/Palin ticket on Nov. 4th. The GOPers are playing some kind of game, and if I were McStain, I’d be watching my back big time right now.

    PEACE

The guy she fired said he didn’t immediately fire the brother inlaw because all the charges they brought up against him were old charges that had happened year before and weren’t relevant to his current behavior. And he said he been involved in police work and had seen families go over board like this all the time. He sounded really reasonable which is why I’m sure the state was willing to pay $100,000 to invetigate her abuse of power and the fact that she lied about the details.

  201. texaslady says:

Notice that none of the repub talking heads will answer Larry King or Anderson when they are asked if this is the best of republicans to pick for V.P. ? Interesting.
Unfortunately there are women that will vote for mccain just because of Palin…just like there are people who won’t vote for Obama because he is black. Disgusting but true.

  202. Moderation says:

It also appears she just might have edited her Wikipedia entry:

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/29/21034/4861/159/579549

Note the name of the use that edited it…a one-time user, never posted before, with the name YoungTrigg. Guess what her new baby’s name is? Trig. The edits are pretty damned specific in tone, and just so happen to mesh perfectly with her new role as VP candidate, editing out anything that might be used against her. Too bad Republican politicians don’t seem to be very imaginative, nor do they seem to be very tech savvy, else they’d know a Wiki edit does not cause the previous info to disappear.

Gosh, I sure do hope someone can track down the IP of this YoungTrigg person, and see if it came from the Alaskan Governors office, Palin’s home address, or the IP of a McCain worker, or, best of all, Karl Rove’s IP. That would be bloody awesome.

  203. AngryAfrican says:

Okay. Let’s never throw the “Obama isn’t experienced” card out there again. She became governor in 2006… She answered a question on the rumors of her becoming VP with the answer “What does a VP do?” Just a month ago… She is being investigated right now… Go do some searches. You’ll see she flip-flopped on why she fired the guy. First she said it was because she wanted him in a new job to focus on alcohol abuse in Alaska. And then, less than a month later, she said she fired him because she didn’t believe that he could control alcohol abuse in Alaska. And she replaced him a guy with a sexual harrassment and letter of reprimand against him. And she knew about it. She has been in charge of a state with more reindeer than people. There is a big different in pushing the button to switch on the lights in a god-forsaken town in Alaska and having your finger on the red flashing button. What happens, God forbid, if something happens to McCain (if he becomes President) and she becomes President. The sad thing is that there are many more competent women he could have chosen from. But he took this decision because he will do everything to become President. He did it because it is good for him. Not what is good for this country. It is a sexist decision trying to play “women” to get their vote. Shame on McCain.

Does a Romney/Huckabee ticket seem too wierd at this point?

  207. leftcoast says:

McCain met Palin once in February. McCain says he followed her “career” over the next six months. After she met with some campaign folks and the CEO of Hensley Inc. she met McCain.
McCain then says to America…”when you get to know her, you’re going to be as impressed as I am.”
It’s like Bush looking into Putin’s eyes and “seeing his soul”.

This is not sound judgment. This is a campaign decision with his campaign wonks sitting around a table and trying to determine how to shake things up, get people to talk about her rather than the real issues and just win at all costs. Winning has replaced judgment.

Actually…as I just pointed out, someone using the username YoungTrigg (the name of Palin’s new baby) has been editing the crap out of that entry. It no longer looks like it did 24 hours ago, in a very specific manner. Hopefully, the IP of the person who did this will be tracked down, so we can see if it was Palin, an aide, a member of McCain’s staff, Rove, or whomever.

Actually, I’ve been suspecting this for quite some time now as well. The nomination has not been confirmed. This is precisely the kind of dirty pool I would expect from snake-oil salesmen such as those in the modern GOP.

There is a question as to whether she was really vetted – McCain met her once and spoke to her on the phone once when he offered her the job.
Quite irresponsible behavior for a guy who wants to be a president with good judgment.

  214. Marie says:

Biden could have trouble debating her – she’s a pretty woman, so she will have a head start there – if he’s too tough on her, she will be his victim.

Maybe McCain’s choice is purely cynical.

  215. Marie says:

Several earlier posts here are talking about Obama’s birthplace — he was born in Hawaii, of course, and it was even a state! 225. RUCerious says:

Marie, My hope is that he gently, warmly, slices her liver out during the debate.

  226. Badger says:

Pot is legal in Alaska, and Gov. Palin has Admitted to Smoking it.

Gov. Palin’s son did enlist in the Army on Sept. 11 (coincidence?) but it was on Sept. 11 2007. He is set to deploy to Iraq on, (you guessed it)Sept. 11. May he be safe, and return safe and soon to his family.

Larry Mahnken has a thoughtfull approach to Gov. Palin, which is worth checking out:

The Right Way To Approach Palin’s Inexperience

    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/30/55459/0337/792/579925

Obama needs to apply the same criteria to Governor Palin that he applies to himself, namely, that it’s not how much experience you have, but whether you have the judgment and knowledge to do the job better than your opponent. He should come out very explicitly say that Governor Palin’s experience is irrelevant, what matters is her ability to be the leader of the free world.

It will take the issue off the table not just for Palin, but for Obama. The election will have to take a different direction, and at this point that looks like a definite positive for Senator Obama.

Not only that, but dismissing her inexperience actually raises the bar for her, while calling her inexperienced lowers it. If she were to come out in the debate and actually appears reasonably knowledgeable about foreign policy to the average American, calling her inexperienced beforehand would help her. But if you say it doesn’t matter, then she’s going to be compared to Joe Biden, not a low expectation.

it’s sourced to an August 6, 2006 article in the Anchorage Daily News.
