President Bush is slated to appear at fundraisers for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in Oklahoma and Texas next month. “On the internal planning schedule, though, McCain aides are careful to point out McCain won’t be in attendance at either,” Politico reports.

U.S. forces have arrested a deputy of Ahmad Chalabi, who was once the Bush administration’s favorite Iraqi politician, “and implicated him in bombings that killed Americans and Iraqis.” The U.S. military says the deputy, Ali al-Lami, “was working with the ‘highest echelons‘ of the Iranian ’special groups’ criminals.”

As tropical storm Gustav approaches, “oil producers have begun to halt drilling and operations in the Gulf of Mexico” and are now “evacuating hundreds of workers from rigs and production platforms.”

As New Orleans prepares for another hurricane, a new report “presents the clearest picture yet of deaths from Katrina in Louisiana.” “Of the nearly 1,000 who died, almost half were 75 or older” and 51 percent were black, according to the study in the journal Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness. The researchers hope the findings “will aid public health and emergency preparedness efforts” in the future.

On the trail today: Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who is celebrating his 72nd birthday, will reportedly announce his vice presidential pick in Dayton, OH. Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and his vice presidential candidate Joseph Biden (D-DE) will launch their presidential campaign in Beaver, PA.

Five industry groups have sued the Interior Department over a rule to protect the polar bear that they say unfairly singles out business operations in Alaska for their contribution to global warming.” The oil and gas, mining, and manufacturing groups asked a judge to prevent laws designed to protect the bear from being used “to block projects that release heat-trapping gases in the state.”

The Bush administration is considering a new executive order that “would eliminate a union-preferred method of labor organizing at large government contractors.” The order would require such contractors “to use secret-ballot elections for union organizing” in place of the “card-check system in which workers can form a union if a majority of them sign a union-authorization card.”

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL) on Thursday named Charles T. Canady to the State Supreme Court. The move “drew praise from conservatives,” as Canady is a “a former congressman who played a major role in the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.”

Tax rebate checks and robust exports “helped the U.S. economy grow at a faster-than-expected rate in the second quarter.” But “economists warned that those two pillars couldn’t prop growth up for long” because the rebate checks’ “one-time boost to consumer spending is largely over.

And finally: Speaking last night at the Democratic convention in Denver, Barney Smith – a displaced manufacturing worker from Marion, IN — delivered the line of the night. “We need a president who puts Barney Smith before Smith Barney,” he said. (The brokerage firm Smith Barney “had its image tarnished for its financing of Enron Corp., the Houston-based energy company which had an epic collapse due to dodgy accounting procedures.”) Watch it here.

Accepting Democratic nomination, Obama unveils harshest attacks on McCain foreign policy

Barack Obama, accepting his party’s nomination after a campaign promising to bring change to Washington, unveiled some of his harshest attacks against his Republican opponent while fiercely defending himself from attacks on his patriotism.

Obama presented himself as having the “temperament and judgment” to lead America through a tumultuous world and accused John McCain of taking his eye off the No. 1 threat to national security. “John McCain likes to say he’ll follow bin Laden to the Gates of Hell — but he won’t even go to the cave where he lives,” Obama said, accusing the Arizona senator of supporting the Iraq war and losing focus on Afghanistan.

He further noted that his call for a timetable to leave Iraq has garnered support from Iraqi leaders and has even been entertained by the Bush administration, arguing that McCain “stands alone in his stubborn refusal to end a misguided war,” and calling for a new direction in foreign policy.

“You don’t defeat a terrorist network that operates in 80 countries by occupying Iraq,” Obama said. “If John McCain wants to follow George Bush with more tough talk and bad strategy, that is his choice — but it is not the change we need.”

“The men and women who serve in our battlefields may be Democrats and Republicans and Independents, but they have fought together and bled together and some died together under the same proud flag,” Obama said as thousands of American flags fluttered in the audience. “They have not served a Red America or a Blue America — they have served the United States of America.

“So I’ve got news for you, John McCain. We all put our country first.”

    http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Obama_McCain_not_judgement_we_need_0828.html

I thought I would put up a link for the video of Obama’s speech for anyone that didn’t get a chance, like myself, to see his speech. Al Gore rocked the house, I think it was truly one of his best and most inspiring speech to date. What a truly great line-up the DNC convention had this year. Kidney stones, a harrowing 48-hour period, and accompanied by a doctor and paramedics Ted Kennedy left his hospital bed determined to make his speech. It was great to hear the Lion roar. Hillary’s fiery speech with “No way, No How, No McCain” and “We’re not Quitters – Keep on Going’ outdid herself.

There is no way the GOP’s line-up for their convention can even compare.

Olbermann Rips AP Reporter’s Analysis of Obama Speech

In an unusually heated attack on a veteran political reporter by a cable news host, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann laced into the Associated Press’s Charles Babington an hour after Barack Obama had concluded his speech in Denver on Thursday night.

With rare exception, nearly all of the top commentators and reporters on the three cable news networks had hailed Obama’s speech as something new and powerful, and filled with specifics, and predicted it would have a positive effect on his chances vs. John McCain. This hallelujah chorus included conservatives such as Bill Kristol and Pat Buchanan and the longtime Republican David Gergen, as well as Tom Brokaw and Brian Williams. Buchanan called it the best and most important political convention speech he had ever heard, going back 48 years.

So Olbermann was outraged that the AP’s Babington had written, in his analysis of the speech, just off the wire, that Obama had tried nothing new and that his speech was lacking in specifics. He read the first few paragraphs on the air, lamented that it would be printed in hundred of newspapers on Friday, and concluded, “It is analysis that strikes me as having born no resemblance to the speech you and I just watched. None whatsoever. And for it to be distributed by the lone national news organization in terms of wire copy to newspapers around the country and web sites is a remarkable failure of that news organization.

“Charles Babington, find a new line of work.”

    http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003844063

It’s bad enough that AP’s Washington Bureau Chief, Ron Fournier, and other AP reporters have been writing slanted articles, now there is another AP reporter to add to the list. I expect more integrity and unbiased reporting from the AP than this. Especially considering that Pat Buchanan, whom I would not expect to give a positive point of view, “called it the best political speech going back 48 years.” Too many reporters from the AP have shown they are just political henchmen for McCain.

U.S. District Judge Samuel Kent indicted in sex case

U.S. District Judge Samuel Kent was indicted Thursday on charges of abusive sexual contact and attempted aggravated sexual abuse of a female employee, making him the first federal judge to be charged with federal sex crimes and the first in Texas indicted in recent history.

The federal criminal investigation was launched in November 2007 after Kent’s former case manager, Cathy McBroom, complained that the judge physically touched her under her clothing twice and often made obscene suggestions during the six years she worked for him.

In the indictment, he is accused of making unwanted sexual contact “with an intent to abuse, humiliate, harass (and) degrade.”

The Chronicle does not normally identify sexual abuse victims, but McBroom, referred to as “Person A” in the indictment, previously authorized her attorney to speak about the allegations and on Thursday released her own written statement.

The three-count indictment against Kent comes nearly five years after the date of the first alleged incident, during which the judge is accused of attacking McBroom in a little-used exercise room at the Galveston courthouse in August 2003.

    http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102×3459212

This by the way is an appointee of George HW Bush, I found in my research. What makes this even worse is that McBroom made the accusations 5 YEARS AGO in 2003, Kent’s been getting paid and it was kept secret til November of last year when “Chronicle published details.” The Texas FBI never took the allegations seriously. The judge faces an additional charge of attempted aggravated sexual abuse related to his alleged attempt during the March 2007 incident to force McBroom’s mouth toward his groin. Here we go again, another Republican caught in a sex scandal who can’t keep his hands to himself.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see. I know that ABC has reported that Palin is still at home.

Here’s what I read this morning:

Fox News reported that Palin’s family departed hastily from Anchorage, Alaska, aboard a Gulfstream jet that landed near Dayton, Ohio, site of McCain’s planned vice presidential announcement. They cited the website Change&Experience.com, which also had correctly leaked travel details for Senator Joseph Biden to Springfield, Illinois, for Barack Obama’s announcement. The report cited two men, a woman and two teenage boys, were seen departing the plane, in “the most secretive flight we have ever had” at this particular airport.

    _______

I’m amazed at how easy it is to get people to fear an abstract concept like “terrorism” or “communism” or “socialism” or “secularism.” I think it’s something in the human brain’s preference for stereotype and categorization – we’re not wired for complexity and nuance, we’re wired for simplicity. But it’s possible to rewire the brain, through lots of education to understand these concepts past the point of fear. It’s easy to fear “terrorism,” but it’s much easier to overcome this fear when you understand that terrorism is just a technique used by disparate and varied groups to achieve selected and specific political aims.

This is typical of you, goon. No women were “snubbed” by the Democratic party (although, credit to you for getting the name right, at least). One candidate who happened to be a woman, failed to get enough votes to win the nomination. For whatever reasons (and there are many excellent reasons), she also wasn’t chosen as nominee for VP. August 29th, 2008 at 10:28 am

I’m from New York and I can tell you Lazio was an idiot, brought in at the last minute (as gummitch correctly pointed out) to replace Giuliani after the latter was diagnosed with prostate cancer and dropped out of the race. And as much as I despise Rudy (he’s not everyone’s hero), I’m glad he was able to overcome that. Nevertheless, comparing Biden to Lazio in an attempt to make the ridiculous point that Biden couldn’t do well against a woman in a debate is completely baseless. They were/are running for two completely different offices. The voters’ standards will be different. There really is no valid comparison there. And Lazio is still an idiot.

  139. indyjones says:

Geraldine Ferraro, calling Barack Obama “sexist,” may not back him
Might fully one-third of the six surviving Democratic vice presidential nominees end up opposing their party’s national ticket this November?

That possibility arose today based on comments Geraldine Ferraro, the 1984 Democratic veep candidate, made to The New York Times.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, who occupied the No. 2 slot for the Democrats in 2000, months ago declared for presumptive Republican White House nominee John McCain.

And Ferraro, a staunch Hillary Clinton supporter who sparked a brouhaha earlier this year over whether she made a racially dismissive remark about Barack Obama, apparently is no longer a reliable Democratic vote.

Ferraro, in the NYT story, terms Obama “terribly sexist.” And, as a result, she says she may not be able to cast her ballot for him if, as anticipated, he gains the Democratic presidential nod.

On the positive side for Democrats, no signs of apostasy are emanating from the four other one-time party veep candidates still alive — John Edwards (the ‘04 nominee who officially signed on with Obama last week), Al Gore (the nominee in 1992 and ‘96), Walter Mondale (the 1976 and 1980 nominee) and Sargent Shriver (George McGovern’s running mate in 1972 — they may have gotten trounced by the GOP’s Richard Nixon/Spiro Agnew pairing, but their longevity is impressive).

It doesn’t matter who McCain choses. He is a deeply flawed nominee and will be proven as such shortly after the Republican Convention and his first debate with Obama. McCain has been playing both sides of his supporters for fools so far but it has worked because he has been doing it in smaller gatherings. When playing to the Independents he says one thing and then conveniently poses the opposite as his policy to the Conservative base. He needs both I’s and R’s to stand any chance but he can’t have it both ways. The coming events are on a large scale and will receive national coverage. He will have to finally chose one side to stand on regarding each issue. Either way he will shun either the base or the Indies as they are diametrically opposed on most of the main issues. McJanus will need a miracle to pull this off and honestly, he is not up to the task. The wind was taken out of the GOP slime machine’s sails last night. That is ALL they had as they’re myopic and out of touch stands on the issues will not sustain them through the first debate.

    And “indy”

McDepends has been in the Senate for OVER a quarter of a century ; I’d prefer someone that is so-called “inexperienced” with new ideas and a fresh face and youthful exuberance , over the horseshit , crusty white old Christian male morons that the GOP keeps regurgitating……..

in theory, on the surface, this sounds great. But this is the Presidency of the US. There is too much at stake to simply hire on a good interview without taking a close look at the resume. If you have ever had to hire before, you will know what I mean.

This is sexist! Stop it now.

He’s sponsored several on healthcare for children, welfare to work, and education reform, but his last one was the education bill for GIs that passed and Bush signed into law.

Indeed there is too much at stake. Given the resume of the current President, I’d say that resume’s mean squat in a Presidential race and the results speak for themselves.

Yeah, stop imitating Republican’s base, it’s embarrassing.

    No, serious, it’s offensive.

Funny how Indy wants one set of rules to apply to his candidate, but an opposite set to apply to Obama.

mccains resume fails to get him hired. What’s your point. By the way your inane posts are starting to be offensive too.

Let’s get this straight – sexist language does not offend you but opposing viewpoints do…..right?

    indyjones,

Let’s get this strait – you have nothing to say, but you’re going to say it anyway…right?

You are free to flag whoever said it. I know that Republicans are hypocrites when it comes to sexism and the comment was pointing that out.

Only when it’s all you want to talk about. Everyone else has moved on. Why aren’t you upset with mccain for the same behaviour. Seems you want it both ways to your advantage.

If you want to discuss matters you would address the answers to your questions that cite Mr. Obama’s accomlishments which you brought up yourself but now choose to ignore in lieu of changing the subject to something you think you have the high road on since you got kicked to the pavement on the first attempt…..yes that offends me…too.

You mean like Americans did in 2000 and 2004 ?

    Now , you’re ready to peruse a candidate’s background/history ?

    Fine

McDepends : privilieged birth , far below average intellect , shitty pilot , adulterer , gold digger and a political history of over a quarter of a century in Congress , with not 1 meaningful or landmark legislation or Bill he wrote.

He bis unqualified for the job………..Next

If you notice and before you try to chastise me agian, I used the word too. You do understand and are well enough educated to know that that means inclusive, as in both cases aren’t you? Maybe not.

Don’t get all santimonious here and try to use it as a wedge issue, we are not right wing sheep.

  177. Tweedster says:

Hey indy, where is your list? it looks like 666lattes compiled some Obama’s accomplishments in the Senate.

I mean, Obama wasn’t involved in something as huge as the Keating 5 like McCain but – oh wait, that was a BAD thing…

Up yours. *sshat… sexist, like McStain’s rape jokes?

Or Glen “The Pillsbury Blowboy” Beck calling Hillary a b*tch?

Or the way Fox used endless “jiggly jiggly” to draw viewers?

Please explain… I’ll try to wait until you’re thru shooting yourself in the foot before I break down laughing…

Wonder what reason the Reverend Hagee is going to give about Gustaf when it hits the Gulf Coast, likely Louisiana on Monday? Might I remind him that we will not forget his asinine comments made about why Katrina hit New Orleans and Mississippi, nor the embrace given him by John McCain. Just as repulsive today as it was when then. The anniversary of Katrina certainly makes everyone remember these remarks.
