Gustav growing into ‘monster Category 5 storm.’

Hurricane Gustav is growing into “a monster Category 5 storm” as it heads towards the Gulf Coast. The storm is moving into the Loop Current, a deep bed of hot water in the Gulf of Mexico that is helping to intensify the storm. In May, climatologists reported that the Gulf has been experiencing warmer waters than usual:

Off St. Petersburg, water temperatures have been 2 to 4 degrees above the 80-degree average for this time of year. In Fort Myers, temperatures have been similar. If that warm water continues to deepen and spread, it could be disastrous if a hurricane enters the gulf. … The gulf, with its loop current of deep, warm-water pools, is a hurricane minefield. If the water heats up enough, it can send storms spinning headlong into the coast.

ABC News writes, “Many scientists predict over the next decade we’ll see stronger hurricanes — Category 4 and 5 hurricanes even more violent than Katrina. The cause, some argue, is rising sea surface temperatures caused by global warming.”

Update The White House is "reevaluating the President's plans to attend the Republican National Convention" in order to monitor the relief efforts.
Update "A senior McCain source tells CNN they are considering turning the convention into a service event — a massive telethon to raise money for the Red Cross and other agencies to help with the hurricane."
Update John McCain and Sarah Palin are traveling to Mississippi on Sunday, at the invitation of Gov. Haley Barbour (R), "to check on people getting prepared for Hurricane Gustav."

Please, I hope those who can evacuate do so, plus please, oh, please, help those who cannot help themselves get out of the way. For example, how about emptying the nursing homes now, instead of waiting?

  3. Chocolate Jesus says:

Does anyone who beleives god controls the weather have ANYTHING to say about god timing a devastasting storm to hit the united states during the republican convention??

wow, a natural disaster may very well turn out to be a good excuse to cancel a man-made one.. I’d love to hear how Palins lines gushing about Clinton would go over at the RNC..

  4. tom says:

We should all hope and pray that Gustav falls apart before its projected landfall on the Gulf Coast.

The expected path is very worrisome and the amount of rain and flooding it could bring to populated areas in and around New Orleans would be devastating.

  5. zuch says:

I note the New Orleans is in the right front quarter of the expected track. That’s the most dangerous part….

I’ll try and refrain from my normal cynical self and just say that they are acting in good faith.

  8. livelongandprosper says:

Tom. The worst news is the increased temperature of the water in the Gulf. It’s like having a bellow to heat up the flames.

Just checked the Weather Channel radar. Pretty steady course to the Northwest. Not good. Expect a spike in Oil and Gasoline at the Futures and Retail level next week.
Good help and keep the people of New Orleans.

  11. Chocolate Jesus says:

how abotu this RNC’ers? cancel it and donate the money youd spend on it to the victims of the hurricanne. no wait, that wouldnt be grossly exploitative enough for them….they’re the type of people who, if a bus wrecked on the way to the RNC, they’d use the footage in a campaign commercial somehow..

  12. samsuncle says:

It’s looking like Katrina all over again here in Louisiana. School buses, families, campers, buses loaded with prisoners heading north. Convoys of National Guardsmen heading south. Gas prices jumped 16 cents from thursday to friday and most stations are sold out today. Lowe’s, Home Depot, and all the grocery stores are doing a great business. Bottled water and batteries are scarce. But, LSU won today so its not all bad.

  13. Chocolate Jesus says:

if god controls the weather, my take on this is that he’s telling us “if you let these idiots keep running the show, then get used to disasters like this…”

I’m agnostic so im not ruling out the possibilty. Any other takes on this by people who beleive its possible that a divine being controls the weather?

  14. tom says:

They should continue with the business of the convention but all companies and lobbyists should cancel their parties and donate the money they would have spent on them to the relief efforts.

  15. Bobwurst says:

My thoughts are with you Samsuncle take care of yourself and your family, and don’t forget the dog.

How about if we focus on helping the people and animals of New Orleans and the surrounding area instead of trying to turn this into a political event?

Sounds good, can you hold your Republicans friends to it? Oh wait, no – see update number 2.

  17. spencers mom says:

God, I hope the government does a better job responding this time, and I do pray for the safety of those in the path of this storm.

Of course, having the National Guard and their transport vehicles here in the States probably would help. And having some semblance of competence in the FEMA management team would be a plus.

Now, let’s listen to the global warming deniers at the RNC next week. That means you, too, Palin, you Big Oil tool!

    PEACE

  18. wizard2000 says:

Now, if President Bush was a Real Man, he’d be like one of the hurricane reporters at the Weather Channel, get the White House camera crew, and actually go down to the Gulf Coast where Hurricane Gustav is expected to make landfall, and do a live report/telethon as the hurricane winds buffet him about, with hurricane-force wind-blown rain soaking his copy of My Pet Goat clutched in his hand.

Hmmmm, maybe Dick Cheney would join him, proving he, too, is a Real Man, clutching his shotgun, shooting into the eye of Hurricane Gustav, shrieking that Hurricane Gustav hitting during the Gulf Coast during the Republican National Convention is a Democratic Party plot…or that God is in league with the Democrats. Dick Cheney howling into the howling hurricane winds.

Hell, Tony Fratto and Dana Perino could join them and prove that they are Real Men, too. And John McCain. And Sarah Palin.

    Wussies.

  21. Georgette Orwell says:

I know things are getting bad, samsuncle, because they cancelled the after-game parties at LSU.

This creates such a terrible, sick feeling of helplessness. Several of my New Orleans friends are visiting here in New England, the remainder have evacuated, and I expect to reprise my Katrina stint of a week of eighteen hours a day/night on the computer watching weather radar and satellite, plus the ABC feed out of Baton Rouge. The timing, so close to the anniversary, is eerie.

Do you suppose we’ll ever figure out that it’s not nice to try to fool Mother Nature?

  28. muzz says:

I can’t help being cynical – governor of Mississippi is a republican – invites the republican canditates to ‘check on people’. /now, if they go down there without cameras for photo ops, and dragging reporters with them to show their “genuine” concern – it would be one thing. if they are looking at it to try to get a political edge (naw – they would never do that) then I hope the whole thing backfires in their faces.

OK, here we are on the edge of the French Quarter. Waiting.

Tomorrow morning we will make the final run to pick up my partners grandmother, who up until now has refused to evacuate the city. Hopefully we will be able to get up to his parents’ home in northern MS.

It’s all such a crap shoot now. Please keep you thoughts and prayers (if that’s the thing for you). It’s going to be more than a bumpy ride, and I – for one – have to tell you that we are scared sh1tless at what we are about to face.

No foxholes here, but still…we’ll take those good thoughts, vibes, prayers where we can.

    Peace – Ken

  38. clarkorwell says:

All I ask is for the federal, state, and local governments to do everything possible for the people affected by Gustav. Katrina was a shining example on how government can fail when government is needed. May no one suffer how they suffered only a few years ago.

Ken, best of luck to you, your family, and all in Gustav’s path. Stay safe.

  43. barracks9 says:

Thank you, jane and shayne and everyone.

We have seen the best response from the local and state government – people are being evacuated at a remarkable rate and this is such a difference from Katrina.

Time for me to try to sleep – I cannot thank TP enough (and all of you) for your good thoughts. It will be what it will be and we will remove ourselves from harm’s way as soon as we possibly can, but still…

I am trying not to break down.

I stayed through Katrina and I don’t know that I still have the reserves to get through Gustav

    I don’t know if I am that strong…

Neither John McCain and Sarah Pallin nor lobbyist Governor Haley Barbour need check on me. They have no idea what REALITY even is. Bush’s Homeland Security under Chertoff cannot even provide a bag of ice after a storm anymore. STAY AWAY FROM US… and Barbour diverting money left and right from Katrina funds instead of that funding going to individual housing. OH YES – Politics and those in power can do what they want it seems………………..

  45. Xisithrus says:

The people dont need politicians ‘checking’ on them. Stay out of the way, please.

  46. Keltoi at Night says:

“I was just thinking, this Gustav is proof that there is a God in heaven,” Moore said, laughing. “To have it planned at the same time – that it would actually be on its way to New Orleans for day one of the Republican Convention, up in the Twin Cities – at the top of the Mississippi River.”

I am sorry to keep posting this, but the quote belongs on every thread TP chooses to make into a Gustav vs RNC convention fest.

The comments here have been overwhelmingly decent. Good for the people who come here.

If Gustav were happening at any other time, would there be such posts? How many threads did Fay get, or are Hannah getting?

And yet…how many “far left loons” (shout out to you, Bilbo) are quietly rejoicing at this turn of events? Or in the case of Moore and Olberman, yukking it up on national TV?

Is it any wonder people believe the Dems root for bad news in Iraq, bad news for the economy, bad polls for the US in Europe?

In other words, either cut it out, Faiz, or throw in with that tub of lard Moore and laugh with glee at the misfortune of the people in the path of this natural disaster.

  47. barracks9 says:

No, man, it is Micheal Moore that is laughing at you. That quote is from the KO show. I am utterly pissed off that anyone, ANYONE, would be happy that a huge storm should hit the Big Easy, again.

But that is exactly what Moore was doing on Olberman.

Get safe if you aren’t already.

Anything for better poll numbers and viewership.

  55. samsuncle says:

McCain and Palin going to the Mississippi Gulf Coast today. WTF? Do they expect huge crowds of people waving signs and cheering for them? Residents don’t have time for that BS as they are packing their cars and vans trying to figure out where they are going to seek shelter and doing what they can to protect their property. Local law enforcement doesn’t need the distraction as they are directing traffic and preparing for landfall. Are McCain/Palin going for a photo op by standing in the surf on Biloxi beach wearing slicker suits like the weather channel people? They just need to stay out of the way. Barbour is probably hoping that Mississippi takes a dirct hit so he and his pals can make another fortune off of no bid contracts.

  56. wldj says:

As a survivor of Hurricane Charlie on Friday the 13th 2004 I can be called a Hurricane expert. This Gustav is no joke and is one huge storm and local residents need to get the hell out of it’s way. Here in Charlotte County Florida Charlie wasn’t supposed to hit us, it made an unwxpected turn through Boca Grande Pass and we had no chance to leave, just lay low and hope for the best. The only good thing about Charlie was the spped it was moving, approximately 20mph, with winds over 140 mph and gusts over 170 if it was moving slowly the damage would have been much worse than it was and the damage was devestating.

  57. fromthevalleyofdeath says:

McCain and Palin going to the Mississippi Gulf Coast today. WTF? Do they expect huge crowds of people waving signs and cheering for them?

Nah, they just want to look Presidential. If OB had done this, they would have called it presumptuous. How dare he go down there – who does he think he is?

I hope that everyone in NO and the surrounding region is safe or that Gustav misses.

  58. Mugsy says:

TP, I recommend going back and reviewing how the White House responded to criticism that the new levee system being built wouldn’t even withstand another Katrina (Cat-4 or above) storm.

They cited Katrina as an “anomaly”, a “once in a century storm”, citing the unlikelihood of another storm of such strength hitting New Orleans before they have a chance to make it stronger.

I’d also recommend going back to Drudge last year, who proclaimed on his website last Summer that the uneventful storm season of the past two years was “proof” Global Warming wasn’t real.

  59. stateofthedivision says:

Trent Lott needs help moving his valuables to the second floor. John McCain and Sarah Palin want to do their part to help the lobbyist prepare.

  60. bentley1 says:

All this hot air from Keito about Moore, who by the way explained it later in a letter.
And NO outragae about McCain turning a natural disaster into a ghoulish photo-op.
This is not about Micheal Moore, so knock it off. Your phoney selective outrage is ridiculous.
    tony andlido

  61. turnerj41 says:

I only hope the Republicans find it in themselves to help this time around; I don’t care about the timing, I don’t care if it is grandstanding…the president and the democrats also better be there. The Navy should be mobilized now to enter the region immediately after landfall, and the federal government should be preparing to take all the resources they need to provide safety to our gulf coast residents. The state of emergency has already begun and taking the lessons learned from a few years is a good time to show that politics doesn’t always have to be theater.
