Rove Flips On Qualifications For Vice Presidency, Says Palin Is Qualified For Same Reason Kaine Was Not

Earlier this month, Karl Rove repeatedly argued that Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) would not be “capable” of being Vice President. He complained that “he’s been a governor for three years” and said Kaine was mayor of only the “the 105th largest city in America,” referring to Kaine’s tenure as mayor of Richmond, VA. “It’s not a big town,” he quipped.

Yesterday, however, Rove argued just the opposite with regard to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R). He explained on Fox News that Palin was a good choice as McCain’s vice presidential nominee because she was “mayor of the second largest city in Alaska”:

ROVE: She’s a populist, she’s an economic and a social conservative, she’s a reformer, she took on the incumbent governor of the state Frank Murkowski — Republican — beat him in the primary, won an upset in the general election. She’s a former mayor. She’s the mayor of, I think, the second largest city in Alaska before she ran for governor.

Watch it:

Kaine was indeed mayor of the ‘the 105th largest city in America.’ While there, he governed nearly 200,000 people and managed a bureaucracy of over 8,000 employees. By contrast, Palin was mayor of Wasilla, AK, a town of just over 8,000 people that currently employs just over 100 individuals and — contrary to Rove’s claim — didn’t even make it into the 10 largest cities in AK while she was mayor.

Digg It!

McCain dying should be on the forefront of every American's mind. The sad situation is that if McCain is elected (legally or by voter fraud and caging), there is a VERY real possibility that we will have a President Palin. I really don't think that Failin' Palin will make it through this September. She lied about rejecting the Bridge to Nowhere money at her coming-out party yesterday. She's already putting her foot in her mouth about a variety of things including Iraq policy, etc.

She will either withdraw for "personal reasons" or she will remain on the ticket and become an overwhelming liability. Remember, Geraldine Ferrero gave the Mondale ticket a bump for all of one day and then her husband's questionable financial dealings surfaced.

Failin' Palin wasn't vetted. McNumbNuts had only met her once. She was just the first person deep down on his call list who was willing to commit a career-limiting act by accepting the VP slot.

Incredible , the republicans manage to find a woman to run with mccain which will appeal to both the christian right and perhaps even to those who had wished for a woman to run as president in this election cycle .
Incredible that in the 20th century it is still possible to find someone who doesn't believe in evolution or that humanity can not have any adverse effect on our environment through the endless burning of fossil fuels .Factored in with the fact ,I'm guessing ,as the governor of Alaska she believes we should open up the Arctic wildlife area to Big Oil and you have the perfect Rovian tool .
Now if they can just get a rise out of the Russians as our humanitarian aid to poor Georgia arrives in American destroyers off their coast and the Israeli's attack Iran , shazam .... Rigged elections or a state of nuclear emergency and NO elections at all !!!!
Winning is everything to these folks and brinkmanship is firmly on display in the party of no principles upon whose hands the deaths of more than a million people dries .

  18. Iolair Says:

This move shows that the Republican Party truly believes there are only two qualifications necessary to get elected: pro-life and anti-gay. Those are the "social conservative" issues, and their "base" will vote for them regardless of anything else. That's why they can change their position on everything else with impunity. No other issues matter.

  20. obsessed Says:

    Karl's logic:

    1) tell a blatant lie
    2) of the people who know you're lying - x% already hate your guts and y% think the ends justify the means
    3) if the percentage of people who believe the lie is greater than the percentage who stop believing your future lies because of the current one, then you go ahead and lie your ass off on national television.

By this point, Rove is so well known that the percentage who believe the lie is almost always higher than 100 - (x+y) so he no motivation not to lie every time his opens his mouth.

  22. tom Says:

Let's take Palin's supposed qualifications totally out of the equation for the moment and evaluate McNumbNuts' choice of her in terms of what it says about him. After all, this was his first "presidential" decision. How did he make it?

    1. McNumbNuts met Palin in February at a meeting of the National Governors Association. The one-on-one interaction between the two, according to the McNumbNuts campaign, lasted 15 minutes, at a reception after the meeting.

    2. McNumbNuts talked to Palin on the phone on Sunday, while she was at the Alaska State Fair. The conversation, according to Palin's press secretary, lasted five minutes.

    3. McNumbNuts had a brief meeting with Palin at one of his Arizona homes on Thursday morning, offering her a spot on the national ticket.

There's no personal relationship. There's no sense of how the two might work together running the executive branch. There's no way for McCain to know how she thinks, how she processes information, and how she responds when the pressures on. There's just nothing.

McNumbNuts doesn't know Sarah Palin, but he wants the nation to trust her. We are, of course, also supposed to trust him, despite the fact that he just picked someone to help him lead the nation who he barely knows anything about. Indeed, when introducing Palin at an event yesterday, McNumbNuts had to carefully read from a script, as if he wasn't sure what what his running mate's name was.

So how did McNumbNuts do? He made a cynical and entirely political decision based upon virtually no information. Is that the kind of decision process we need in the Oval Office? I don't think so.

  23. unbelievable Says:

    From Daily Kos:

Sarah Palin left the finances of her town Wasilla in tatters when she moved on in 2002 (h/t xgz). She wanted a legacy as mayor, it seems, and pushed hard for the town to build a hyper-expensive sports complex. But Palin screwed the process up badly. Instead of buying the land for the complex when it was offered, her administration allowed a developer named Gary Lundgren to snap it up. Then Wasilla tried to seize the land from Lundgren through eminent domain. In the end, what with court costs Wasilla paid at least $ 1.7 million for land it could have bought for less than one tenth that sum - if the purchase had been handled properly. For this incompetence, Wasilla is still paying a steep price: higher taxes and cutbacks in services. In other words Palin is about as efficient as Michael Brown, onetime head of FEMA.

On the single most debated issue of our times, the Iraq war, Sarah Palin similarly was out to lunch until as recently as last spring. Shortly after becoming governor, she was asked her views on the surge.

Alaska Business Monthly: We've lost a lot of Alaska's military members to the war in Iraq. How do you feel about sending more troops into battle, as President Bush is suggesting?

Palin: I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place; I want assurances that we are doing all we can to keep our troops safe. Every life lost is such a tragedy.

John McCain would have us believe that Iraq is the central battle in the war on terror, and yet he selects as his running mate somebody who was paying almost no attention to the Iraq war for 4 long years after the invasion.
So what was Palin focused on?

Alaska Business Monthly: It's extremely early to ask this, but when your tenure as governor is over, what would you like to have accomplished? How would you like to be remembered?

Palin: I want people to remember me as having always conducted the state's business in an upright and honest manner. I want them to understand that I put Alaska first in every decision I made.

Try to square that with the troopergate scandal, in which Palin allegedly misused her power as governor by bringing inappropriate pressure for two employees to be fired. What's perhaps most interesting is that Palin appears to have begun misusing power almost as soon as she got any real power.

Speaking of inconsistencies, earlier this month Palin praised Barack Obama's energy plan (h/t Excelscior1). The original document has been scrubbed sometime during the last day (since Aug. 28). I wonder if that could have anything to do with McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate?

  28. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

It's not semantics (study of meanings) or framing (the deliberate construction of sentences to influence the scope of discussion). It's just plain old Fat Bastard Lying. The fact that he interjects the words "I think" do not give him cover. How many of you have ever heard of Wasilla, AK, before you heard that its former mayor would be nominated to be vice president? Wasilla, AK, barely qualifies as a "city" (if it does at all), let alone as the second largest one in Alaska. And Rove knew that perfectly well. So he wasn't "mistaken" (how could he possibly be?), he was flat out lying like the Fat Bastard he is. After all, how could someone who is supposed to be such an electoral genius make such a mistake about a state that has been one of his party's most fervent supporters since it joined the Union?

While I'm thinking of it, why don't we all write into Fox News and tell them to "correct the record" and say to their audience that Karl Rove was wrong. We know the real word is "lying", but let them say "mistaken". But we shouldn't let them keep doing it unchallenged. Because if they don't get complaints, they'll just keep doing it.

Why is it that you right-wingers believe that a person who wanted to vote for Hillary Clinton to be president would want to vote for anyone else whose political views were not at least somewhat close to hers? That is precisely correct, Bobwurst. Today's Republican Party is headed by people who do not believe in government, do not understand its purpose, and do not wish to employ it for the benefit of the people. Their entire approach to government is not only flawed, but in some cases highly illegal and unethical. Remember "pay for play"? Lobbying firms were told not only to fire their liberal and Democratic lobbyists, but that if they didn't contribute big money to the Republicans, they wouldn't be allowed to help write the nation's laws. So, the lobbyists paid up, and the Republicans let them write the laws. I can't tell you how much I wish I was making that up, but it's the absolute truth.

Until the Republican Party cleans up its act and once again returns to the principles championed by their alleged hero, Abraham Lincoln, they should not be allowed to govern again. They don't know how to do it legally, ethically, or properly, and they've already shown they don't want to.

Well, I understand that her husband is back to work at BP (although I imagine his life is changing radically again right now). Failin' Palin has four older children -- of course, one of them will be "fighting for our freedom" in Iraq soon). So that leaves three kids to take care of their little brother. I'm thinking that's the way it's heading.

As for the second largest city in Alaska, Karl searched for one statistic where Wasilla was #2. It might have been the second highest number of morbidly overweight, blowhard Republican males.

“I don’t think you ever kill any political party. Political parties kill themselves, or are killed, not by the other political party but by their failure to adapt to new circumstances. But do you weaken a political party, either by turning what they see as assets into liabilities, and/or by taking issues they consider to be theirs, and raiding them?” The thought brought to his round, unlined, guileless face a boyish look of pure delight. “Absolutely!” -Karl Rove, The New Yorker, May 12, 2003

There are a lot of canny foxes out there and many of them get caught in thier own web of lies and wind up in prison. Let's hope this is rove's eventual destiny.

    Brain From Planet Arous Says:

I'm feeling a little better about things than you. I have some hope that things might just change directions soon.

Some people would be happy with more of the same.

  74. Marie Says:

Someone will have to explain to me the Jewish publication endorsing Palin with her history of anti-semitism.

Ralph, you may be on to something. Everyone in McCain's campaign would have seen through such a hoax, but McCain, operating on his own, may have fallen for it.

  75. McWars Says:

I wonder if repubs would impeach McCain for the affair?

Eh, nevermind. They wouldn't dare set up a republican to perjure himself by popping the question in the first place.

    Impeachment is so for demlibs.

  76. Uncle Fester Lurks Says:

As for McCain did anyone watch when he took the stage to announce his VP pick? The crowd cheered and cheered as he stood there with his robotic, plastic looking wife and daughter and then he burst out the most demented and deranged chuckle I have ever heard.

Think of the laugh of the deranged criminal who hijacks a school bus full of children in the movie Dirty Harry who lets out that demented laugh just before Clint Eastwood shots his ass right off of a pier. It was creepy as hell!

The classic of course was during McCains introduction of M.I.L.F. Palin, I swear to God he said "she stands for priviledge over responsibility." See she truly is the perfect candidate. I just wonder when McCain will make her bleach her hair?

  77. McWars Says:

    McCain/3rd Wife 2008!

  78. Fred Says:

    Brain From Planet Arous Says:

You have your opinion now here's my contrast of the choices. I posted this on another thread but brain has prompted me to duplicate it....sorry

    Contrast Obama/Biden with mcccain/palin

Two very intelligent and dedicated leaders with pedigrees to prove it. Not only that, they look and act like leaders. They look like the kind of people I want to represent me and our country.

They look you in the eye and address every issue that they know is bothering us….re fisa and the war were addressed directly by obama in his speech.

    Honest and open how refreshing.

mcain/palin on the other hand are just more of the same last 8 years. Clearly mccain cannot distance himself from bush with anyone.

His deceptiveness and different stories depending on who he is talking to are transparent and even those people must be noticing it by now.

He would represent us as a dottering old gw bush. She is as one poster has already noted, just dan quayle in drag. Not very impressive as statesmen, mccain hardly knows what to say unless it is well scripted and the audience is chosen for thier guaranteed acceptance of whatever he says.

Contrast that with all of the democratic speeches at the convention. They all were so intelligent and engaging. Not lecturing and telling us how we have failed them as mccain’s group does…..you know, the imaginary recession and the whining folks who have lost everything after working thier lives to get ahead…

    unbelievable says:
Speaking of inconsistencies, earlier this month Palin praised Barack Obama’s energy plan (h/t Excelscior1). The original document has been scrubbed sometime during the last day (since Aug. 28).

if that's the same document i was looking at, i think it was on the official website of the governor's office. i wonder if scrubbing official documents from that site for personal political gain is an abuse of the gubernatorial power.

    What an election!!!!????

A slippery AIPAC puppet who lies about the Russian-Georgian conflict and has no problem ripping the 4th Amendment for “political reasons”

His VP who claims “I am a Zionist”, who lies about the Russian-Georgian conflict, stopped Scott Ritter from testifying before Iraq invasion, was advocating invasion of Iraq BEFORE Bush and Cheney, is all for increased surveillance of all AMericans, and wrote the onerous “Rave Act”

A POW who dropped napalm and bombs on innocent villagers, sang like a songbird when tortured, has the memory of Reagen, lies about the Russian-Georgian conflict, and wants to take on Russia itself.

His VP who is a crazed Religious fanatic, lied about the Russian-Georgian conflict, used her power to settle personal score, and has Zero experience in national affairs. William Kristol’s favorite.

Keep looking at that prize, as snakes and jackals keep biting and gnawing at you.
    .....................................................
Fred I am soooooooooo hoping that you are right but I am worried that the aroused brain is telling it as it is . Help....
My obama sign is still in the front yard but it's very windy here today and I do not believe a third party challenge has any chance of winning this election at present unless it's the libertarians helping the democrats into office by carving out a new party and splintering the republicans .This wouldn't be bad for AMerica if the republicans hav a 3rd party to contend with it might be actually possible to challenge the democrats in the next election cycle on the left .
I will vote democrat as far as I can see in this election but fear it is only as the lesser of 2 evils.

  81. DidHeJustSayThat Says:

Think Progess: Rove DID NOT contradict himself!

I love that each time these guys talk people take their words at face value. This is a bad approach to understanding republic party talking points.

Now I don't suggest listening to the comments backwards - You know the devil would have a message there - but rather inverse the meaning of what they're saying. The opposite!

E.g.: McCain (for the record, McCain is an interesting case study because he has only recently joined the republic.)

"I always put country first." "My opponent would rather lose a war to win an election."

    Translation:

"Yes, yes, my precious. Mine, mine. White House all mine!" "Obama has the integrity and grit, the wisdom and judgment that have failed me, I only wish I were as prescient as he; we might not have gotten into this mess if I, a respected longtime member off Congress had the courage and fortitude to stand up and demand accountability for what was clearly a rush to war."

PROTECT THE CONSTITUTION AS YOU WERE SWORN TO DO AGAINST ALL ENEMIES FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC , IF YOU DO NOT YOU WILL BE COMPLICIT IN THE WORST CRIMES EVER COMMITTED AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN OUR HISTORY AS A NATION !!!!

  84. Uncle Fester Lurks Says:

So why did McCain pick the inexperienced Palin? Was this a gamble? Was it because she is a maverick just like Johnny?
Was it to try and sway disenfranchised Hillary supporters and swing voters to support? Was it very poor judgement? Probably all of the above but there is one more sad, darker reason people are over looking.

John McCain is 72 years old. He is in denial of this fact. He is in the twilight of his life. His health and looks have deteriotated, his trophy wife is whithering before his very rapidly blinking eyes, his glory days are long gone but St. Johnny doesn't want to come to grips with this brutal reality.

Soon St. Johnny will be irelevant, he will become a forgotten foot note in American politics as he rides off into the sunset, straight to a retirement home for the elite. This scares him. So he wants to go out in a blaze of glory just like in his Navy pilot days.

He wants to be glorified, applauded, loved, idolized one last time just as he was when he returned from a prison cell in Vietnam in his past. He wants to do it his way. He is a maverick, he chose a female maverick, never mind her inexperience because that didn't even enter the equation. As I said John is in denial over his age. He doesn't want to deal with that. So he picks a young, vibrant woman to be at his side during the campaign and there will be cheers and adolation.

This campaign is all about John McCain "the maverick" it's not about anything or anyone else. Did anyone notice how he remained on the stage during Palins speech. It should have been her spotlight, her time of glory but old St. Johnny wouldn't have none of that. It's his time, his glory.

Sadly the old maverick will be out done by his own maverickiness. In Novemeber the disenfranchised Hillary supporters, the swing voters will see a 72 year old man with a 43 year old inexperienced woman as his VP and they will intelligently vote for Obama & Biden.

Then old St. Johnny Of Hanoi will ride off into the sunset, dry up and fade away from our memories with the following epitaph engraved on his tombstone.

"Here lies the maverick whose maverickiness led to his own demise in 2008"

  85. Brain From Planet Arous Says:

Yeah, Fred, look at them...They have nice butts and LOOK like leaders. Don't pay attention to details now, that might make you think twice on the New NeoCon look....War Without End on Behalf of the Military-Industrial Complex and Israel with a Friendly Face. You and other hoodwinked Liberals, Democrats, Antiwar people, and Progressives are being taken and betrayed.

Of course, McNuts is worse, and Obama will most likely win. The reason for people like myself is to keep starry-eyed individuals like Fred from getting sucked into the Obama Void, and overlook the fact that he will continue perpetual war, albeit in Afghanistan, looking for the already dead Osama Emmanuel Bin Goldstein.

  86. Brain From Planet Arous Says:

    Marie Says:

Someone will have to explain to me the Jewish publication endorsing Palin with her history of anti-semitism.

Ralph, you may be on to something. Everyone in McCain’s campaign would have seen through such a hoax, but McCain, operating on his own, may have fallen for it.

Marie, this whole election is a PNAC/AIPAC creation. Whoever gets in, the Likud Party wins. This election is also a TV Special, a Sports Event, a "Love Fest", "Change", more war and surveillance, and militarization of the American culture. When Biden says, "I am a Zionist", Obama runs to AIPAC the day after getting the nomination, William Kristol calling for Palin to be put in as VP, and the simple fact of multiple wars being fought with all the enemies of the NeoCoNaZionist Conglomeration. Before and during WW2, the Zionists and traitors to Jewish people, who most were Jewish themselves, turned in people to the German/Nazis, to escape getting killed themselves. NeoCons do not give two hoots about "Anti-Semitism". Power is all they want, even to take over the Democrat Party next. They already took over the Republicans.

  87. tigger Says:

The Republicans have become America's Circus while the Democrats continue to try and get everyone Bread.

  88. tigger Says:

I'm also envisioning McCain in the clown outfit and Palin in showgirl garb riding the elephant....

  89. margerine Says:

Key example of what a shapeshifter this guy is. And that no one really questions him is the real shame, although that isn't surprising.

Picking Palin makes sense in the short term if they feel this choice is going to grab women voters, etc (although that's really an insult to women to begin with because it kind of just reeks of "oh, we're both women, so I'll vote her in!"). But in the long term it's non-sensical. She doesn't have any of the qualifications that make sense for this position.

So not only do I not know what McCain wants to do since he constantly alters his position, we have a woman here who also apparently just isn't INTERESTED in anything. Every last comment from her is to that effect and it comes off so poorly to me. I could respect her more if she had strong opinions that I just happened to disagree with, but she just doesn't seem to care at all.

Meanwhile her Wikipedia entries are all getting cleaned up, things involving points she was previously wishy-washy about are being brought up to speed to the Republican platform, etc.

You know, people used to try to claim that Bush was a puppet for Cheney or whatever else. I'm starting to wonder if McCain is Stage 2 of this. Between him completely altering his standpoints, selling out his veteran experiences and picking this VP... none of it adds up right to me. It's like they want two spineless people in there that some larger force can easily influence.

    RaptureReady Says:

No. She is the right pick for VP and will help Sen. McCain swipe the remaining Hillary voters.

That is delusional. Why would anyone who supported Hillary jump onto the McChimpclone bandwagon because he put a woman on the ticket who is pretty much diametrically opposed to Hillary's every position? Please tell me you dont think women are that stupid, or that they wont see this for the blatant, pandering, and manipulative attempt to do that VERY THING?

  93. stjack Says:

if this were poker, i think a minority on the ticket beats a woman on the ticket, generically speaking. what about two women?

let's say, god forbid, mccain announces next week that due to health reasons, he will not accept the nomination, but he endorses palin. palin then selects Michele Bachmann for a running mate. d'ya think hillary supporters would be tempted to vote for a 2-woman ticket?

i think people are being confused by pictures and video of her hanging out with soldiers in kuwait surfacing all over. there's nothing in either her pre-scrubbed or her post-scrubbed wiki pages about military service.

  96. SP Biloxi Says:

Rove: "She’s the mayor of, I think, the second largest city in Alaska before she ran for governor."

Yeah, Tubby, a mayor of about 8,000 people. This is going to be nothing but a weekend full of nauseating spin and fluff by the media on the Palin veep pick. Yet, Fox News and other media outlet are not touching on the fact that Miss Congeniality Palin is under investigation. We saw how the media salivated over the Rezko trial when Obama was connected in Tony Rezko's case. If Biden and/or Obama was being investigated in a criminal act, the media would focus on the criminal act rather than the nomination in this Presidential race.
