Bush ‘unlikely’ to attend GOP convention.

This morning, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said that it is “unlikely the president will travel to Minnesota on Monday” because of concerns about Hurricane Gustav. “We are currently preparing alternate plans.” Gustav is expected to make landfall along the Gulf Coast as early as Monday, the same day that President Bush, Laura Bush, and Dick Cheney are scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Cindy McCain, and Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) are planning to travel to Jackson, MS, today, to receive a Gustav briefing at the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

Update CNN's John King is reporting that neither Bush nor Cheney will be attending the convention.

    Dear God,

The other night, the Rev. James Dobson’s ministry asked all believers to pray for a storm on Thursday night so that the Obama acceptance speech outdoors in Denver would have to be cancelled.

**I just read this in my email. Powerful and to the point. Similar to my thoughts and prayers. Thanks for sharing.

All the Gulf Coast needs is for Bush or McCain to come and set up to make political points. We need action not words. I know cause I am in Alabama. Keep the hoop la in MN. Please and thank you.

  7. tom says:

I think it’s fair to say that GDumbya’s prayers have been answered — “Dear God, please make it possible for me to stay in Washington for some good reason. I don’t want to face all those people in St. Paul and lie about my failed presi-dunce-y again.”

And LaLa Bu$h’s prayers have been answered as well — “Dear Lord, please give Georgie a reason to stay away from all those crowds and TV cameras in St. Paul. His drinking is totally out of hand and I am afraid that he will embarrass himself the way he did in Beijing.”

  8. tarazan says:

Confused Republicans do not know whether this is good or bad decision for Bush not to attend the Convention.

  9. stateofthedivision says:

Bush gave his “deer in the headlights” speech from a drowned New Orleans. He promised to make things right, to do a robust investigation. The ex-Ranger part owner went 0 for 2.

Who writes a Katrina Lessons Learned report and leaves out the hospital with the largest number of patient deaths? News footage (the day Katrina struck) showed George W. asking Mike Brown about hospital and nursing home patients. So why omit LifeCare’s 24 patient deaths? Was it a favor to new owner, The Carlyle Group?

As for Gustav, my guess is some hospital patients remain in New Orleans. With some 2,000 patient beds, it is a mammoth task to transfer all those sick patients, many critically ill. Once again my heart will be with hospital staff and patients as they ride out the coming storm.

Propaganda is a very powerful tool .! Speeches and film to promote a cause or a candidate appeal to emotionalism .Propaganda has come a long way since triumph of the will was made, which makes it even more dangerous today. This film is so powerful that you will want , knowing everything you know today, to run down and sign up at your nearest Nazi party headquarters.
    Zeig heil .

  11. Bob says:

    God clearly loves the democrats.

The GOP shuldn’t postpone their convention because of a little rain. They should cancel it altogher. They cannot handle more than one disaster at a time, even when they are warned beforehand. Heck, they can’t even handle one disater at a time. The ticket is a real joke, haha, very funny, but the grown-ups have some serious business to attend to. Play time is over so they might as well stop pretending they have a strong ticket and a legitimate chance at the White House.

  12. desertflower1 says:

I’m guessing that GWB staying away from the Repugnant Convention was the answer to McCain’s prayers! Think he’ll have his huge face up on a jumbo tron from the White House extolling the virtues of the guy he can’t stand? All the while, John and Sarah will be using this unfortunate, catastaphic event for political gain…makes me want to puke!

  14. McWars says:

    Right on, Dr. Matt.

I suspect that one of Dr. Dobson’s assistants faxed his prayers to the wrong campaign. Pesky clerical errors.

  15. McWars says:

    good_golly8 Says:

Gustav is not a political event. Let’s focus on helping the people and the animals of the Northern Gulf Coast.

So…you just now read the fax, dated 08/29/2005?

  16. Bob says:

McCain will be delivering his acceptance speech from the disater area no matter what the geographic location happens to be. It’ll come after bush and be surrounded by republicans, so there’s really no way around it.

  17. McWars says:

    Darryl, any comment?

  18. WaltinTexas says:

What a convenient reason to keep the Miserable Failure away from the convention. Without his face to remind folks of reich-wing lies and failed policies, the propaganda will work better.

  19. unbelievable says:

So, if, according to Rev. Fallwell, Katrina was the Christian god’s wrath for gays and abortions, what does he think Gustav says about Republicans and their campaign?

We need hands working, not praying.

  20. Badger says:

Michael Moore is a much better writer than he is an “off the cuff” speaker.

I cringed when he made that remark about God, Gustav, and the Republican Convention. Even Mr. Moore caught himself in the middle of his comment, and quickly added that the Hurricane was a Bad thing for the People effected. Not Funny.

I was so glad to read his well written Clarification

  21. unbelievable says:

good_golly8 Says: Correction, unbelievable: We need hands working and minds praying. Even you might find a prayer in your heart if it were your home in the path of Gustav.

No. Prayer doesn’t work. It never works. There are Christian studies that show it doesn’t help. It’s an utter waste of time when you could be DOING something.

However, actions always work. It’s why the hard work of one is worth more than the prayers of a million.

  22. unbelievable says:

    Here gg:

Mayo Clinic researchers found that their study of intercessory prayer had no significant effect on patients’ medical outcomes after hospitalization in a coronary care unit.

    http://www.mayoclinic.org/news2001-rst/921.html

In fact, the study showed that if you tell people you will pray for them, they actually do worse than those who either don’t get prayer or don’t know about prayers for them.

So stop ‘thinking’ wishful thoughts and start doing something useful.

  23. Fred says:

    good_golly8 Says:
Correction, unbelievable: We need hands working and minds praying. Even you might find a prayer in your heart if it were your home in the path of Gustav.

gg you seem to be the perfect candidate to answer to me exactly why if no one could predict the disaster that Katrina brought to NO as bush says then why should everyone have needed to evacuate?

  24. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I’m hoping that Gustov peters out before it hits the USA for two reasons. The first is so that the poor people in NO don’t have to go through that horror again and the second to take it away from the Republicans as a PR prop.

  25. Badger says:

    So Good Golly8..

Do you think Sen. Obama is the AntiChrist, and if so…isn’t his Election Inevitable.???

  26. unbelievable says:

good_golly8 Says: Unbelievable: Can you walk and chew gum at the same time? If so, you can probably work and pray at the same time. Not all liberals are religion haters like you.

WTF? You’re ridiculous. You can believe in all the invisible sky wizards you want and delude yourself, but don’t insult my intelligence because I believe in hard work rather than the laziness of ‘let someone else take care of it’ like you right wing religious nuts.

Religion is ignorance. Ignorance is destroying our country. If you think that’s something to love, you’re even more worthless than you’ve already demonstrated yourself to be.

Why don’t you go write a letter to Santa Claus and stop wasting space here with your slavering nonsense.

  27. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    good_golly8 Says:
Gustav is not a political event. Let’s focus on helping the people and the animals of the Northern Gulf Coast.

Perhaps you should tell that to your candidate George McCain. He and his sidekick Palin are down there now using it as a political prop. And, he may deliver his acceptance speech from somewhere in the hurricane, again to use it as a political prop.

  28. zenster666 says:

This is how the Republicans are stealing the thunder from a historic and very well run convention. They scheduled and promoted theirs within the same news cycle as the democrats. Now they have made hurricane Gustav their special guest. Of course you probably won’t hear that angle discussed during the regular discussion on the Sunday morning shows.

  29. Kay says:

We all know where Bush and Cheney are:

planning the 2008 Great Election Robbery and Bombing The October Surpise in September (bombing Iran?)

  30. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

If you guys would like a good laugh, go over to redstate.com and see how they are spinning the Palin pick. I really would like some of what those people are smoking, they are so delusional. Make sure you read their comparison of her qualifications to Obamas. It’s a real hoot. Besides, why are they comparing her to Obama and not to Biden. Is she running for President?

  31. unbelievable says:

Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says: I’m hoping that Gustov peters out before it hits the USA for two reasons. The first is so that the poor people in NO don’t have to go through that horror again and the second to take it away from the Republicans as a PR prop.

That would be ideal, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Based on the Science of hurricanes and warm water, I think the best we can hope for is that it will downgrade to a 3 rather than the 4 that was predicted to hit.

Sad for those poor people who live there. NO is a historical and beautiful city unlike any other in America. I’d hate to lose it because we won’t stop Global Warming.

  32. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    good_golly8 Says:
    Matt, your bigotry is showing.

Goony, your lack of critical thinking skills are showing.

I have to admit that I love the Republican fear that is in the air. There is a slight edge of hysteria in the troll posts these days.

  33. Fred says:

    Dr. Hussein Matt Says:
gig, we know you reich-wingers cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. We know you can probably pray,

Yeah, and they, in their self-delustion think that God would answer their prayers for more death and destruction and torture…..right on….

    good_golly8 Says:
The focus should be on Gustav, not on petty politics. McCain/Palin are doing the right thing, preparing for their next jobs as President/Vice-President which will include clean-up from Gustav and working with the Gulf Coast governors with whome they have been talking, and with whom they will be meeting. Meanwhile, Obama and Biden……

It would have been nice if bush had done that when it actually his job…..it aint johnny’s responsibility yet. It’s just a photo opt…exactly what you accuse Obama of so you really should brush up on your talking points because as usual, you look like a fool.

  34. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    good_golly8 Says:
which is far more important to them as their Denver rock concert didn’t provide them with the 10-15 point bump they had hoped.

It wasn’t the Democrats who were hoping for a 10-15 point boost, it was the Republicans pushing that canard. Besides that 8 point boost was before Obama gave his speech. I haven’t seen any poll that has been taken after he gave his speech.

  35. unbelievable says:

good_golly8 Says: The focus should be on Gustav, not on petty politics. McCain/Palin are doing the right thing, preparing for their next jobs as President/Vice-President

If you actually believed that, you wouldn’t be posting about Gustav on a political website.

McCain will not be the next President. You seem to be missing the state-by-state polls, the Bob barr factor, and the obvious fact of the 84,000 people who packed a football stadium to attend his acceptance speech versus the joke that was McCain’s venue. He’s probably thrilled for the diversion from that.

  36. Kay says:

of course, we all know if McStain dies one day after taking the oath, SP will be prez.

    She won’t running the show.
She’ll be the moose burger eating, hockey mom, creatitionist Puppet of the Right.

She’ll only be a puppet. But a puppet to be feared, nevertheless.

  37. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    good_golly8 Says:
Obama and Biden will be pandering for campaign contributions in swing states, which is far more important to them as their Denver rock concert didn’t provide them with the 10-15 point bump they had hoped.

What Obama and Biden WILL NOT be doing is getting in the way of an effort to help the people in the area where the Hurricane will hit. Can you tell us how having McBush and Palin there isn’t going to be causing a total nightmare for the people planning assistance. I’m sure they will find it helpful to have Secret Service people all over the place and have their roads and businesses closed because McBush is in the vicinity.

  38. Kay says:

I wonder how many people are “computer generated” at McGeezer’s events?

  39. unbelievable says:

Kay Says: of course, we all know if McStain dies one day after taking the oath, SP will be prez.

Are you still planning on voting for McKinney knowing it will indirectly be a vote for that incompentent McCain /Palin ticket?

  40. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    good_golly8 Says:
    Desperate?

If you are going to quote a pollster, try doing it with one that isn’t a right wing outfit. The only more skewed polls than Zogby are Faux Noise polls.

But you are correct Goony, the Republicans are desperate and its showing.

  41. Kay says:

No. I’m voting for Obama (with reservations)

  42. Fred says:

Unbelievable, I think Kay understands what is at stake and is re-evaluating where we are in the world today…..Kay knows the danger that the republicans pose to our nation.

I think gg got her ass kicked again and has run away to re-arrange her post it’s and try again later with some other lie.

  43. Kay says:

I think by picking SP shows signs of desperation. (plus, that awful, awful speaking voice she has)

  44. McWars says:

A day in the life of Vice President Sarah Palin..

Gettin up early in the morning, gettin’ four kids and her daughter’s kid ready for school, loading up the SUV, namecalling by boss McCain on the way out, drive-in at Micky D’s on the way to school, arriving at work, sitting the office from 8AM-2PM wondering “What is my job?”, advising boss McCain to fire her sister’s ex who now works for Homeland Security after he lost his gig as an Alaska trooper, pickin’ up the little ones from school, brushing off some advances from boss McCain, then calling it a night.

  45. robbez_92107 says:

Honestly, you Rethuglicans keep forgetting that past actions and words are the best judge of your character, not today’s talking points.

Good luck with that Grampy McSame/Alaska 8,000 population town mayor ticket. I’m sure you’ll do great.

  48. Kay says:

No in this election every vote counts and I would like to vote for McKinney but I think as the election day looms, I want SO BADLY a McStain/Pale defeat that I am going to vote for Obama.

Like I said with reservations, but nevertheless a vote for Obama.

  49. Kay says:

  51. Fred says:

    tokin librul Says:

na, we can’t allow her to spout her lies unchallenged. The mistake we make is engaging in her conversation and letting her run the discussion…..it’s a little tricky but we can’t just allow them to go totally unchallenged.

No rule states that one has to vote with enthusiasm, Kay. You’re a big step ahead of RHF.

If McShitstain should succumb to the rigors of his ‘election,’ I’d fully anticipate she’d name Dick Cheney as her VP, then resign to spend more time with her and her daughter’s children.

I have sorta expected this scenario to play out, prior to McShitstains demise, and actually in advance of the convention.

  54. unbelievable says:

Kay Says: No. I’m voting for Obama (with reservations)

    I’m glad to here that.

I have reservations too – it’s the skepticism of government that he talked about in his speech.

I just remind myself what Bill Clinton did with a Republican Congress, and hope that with a Democratic Congress Obama will be able to make an even bigger difference.

Even if he does one tenth of what we would like to see him do, it will still be far better than what McCain would do to us.

    Hang in there. :)

Bush and Co are so scared of the storm, they’re ‘cutting and running’. Where was their concern for the thousands of people in NO in 05 before Katrina made landfall? you’re misunderestimating ‘em, dahlin…
they’ve got all the way til Jan 19, 2009 to phucque the pooch, which I for one expect them to enthusiastically to do, at every event and occasion. I would NOT be surprised to see a new military adventure launched sometime between now and Jan 20: after the ‘election’ like Daddy Boooosh did in Somalia, if the Pukes lose; before it if it looks like they’re gonna lose…

  57. Tawdry says:

Good God Good Golly, it really is a shame that we’re all so BAD and you’re so GOOD. Preachy, preachy. Can you tell me why god brings so much disaster and suffering to the world? 59. unbelievable says:

Fred Says: Unbelievable, I think Kay understands what is at stake and is re-evaluating where we are in the world today…..Kay knows the danger that the republicans pose to our nation

It seems that he’s finally won over most of the Clinton supporters who were undecided. I’m pretty certain it didn’t help that McCain picked anti-woman Sarah Palin.

His choice is actually doing the opposite of what he intended. My 64-year-old mother supported Clinton and now she is so anti-McCain because of Palin that she’s carping to everyone she knows about how much Palin hurts the women’s movement.

    And then there’s this:

For the past 24 hours, the pages and web sites of the two leading papers up there have raised all sorts of issues surrounding Palin, from her ethics problems to general lack of readiness for this big step up. Right now the top story on the Anchorage Daily News web site looks at new info in what it calls “troopergate” and opens: “Alaska’s former commissioner of public safety says Gov. Sarah Palin, John McCain’s pick to be vice president, personally talked him on two occasions about a state trooper who was locked in a bitter custody battle with the governor’s sister.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/greg-mitchell/2-top-alaska-newspapers-q_b_122625.html

  60. unbelievable says:

Oops – I pasted the wrong paragraph from teh article. here’s the right one:

A reporter for the Anchorage daily, Gregg Erickson, even did an online chat with the Washington Post, in which he revealed that Palin’s approval rating in the state was not the much-touted 80%, but 65% and sinking — and that among journalists who followed her it might be in the “teens.” He added: “I have a hard time seeing how her qualifications stack up against the duties and responsibilities of being president…. I expect her to stick with simple truths. When asked about continued American troop presence in Iraq, she said she knows only one thing about that (I paraphrase): no one has attacked the American homeland since George Bush took the war to Iraq.”

That might be the real reason the site is down.

  64. Wayne says:

Why don’t they call Dobson, who was praying for it to rain on Obama’s speech, to pray away the big bad hurricane?

Instead McCain will try to use the Hurricane as a photo op, by showing up in the area, using the police for security, when they will be needed for recovery and rescue efforts.

  65. Bob says:

Does anyone that hoped or prayed or maybe just thought it would be funny if it rained in Denver last Thursday see this as a lesson in Karama, aka The Golden Rule? People who literally wanted it to rain on someone else’s parade are considering calling their parade on account of rain. Unfortunately, I’m afraid it’s lost on them.

  66. stateofthedivision says:

Cheney goes on his last war tour. The planning has been in play for months, but may need some fine tuning. Expect lots of propaganda from everybody but Cheney. He slinks around in the background.

I bet Bush calls Congress back early to work on energy and does so live via satellite from Camp David. He’ll cite Gustav’s devastation to oil rigs in the Gulf and high gas prices as a result of the storm.

And of course, Sarah Palin will be the energy Goddess. If anyone heard runner up Tim Pawlenty on Grease the Press, she’s intended to be the leech that drains Obama in the experience arena. I’d like a parasite free government for a change…

  67. Gregor Samsa says:

Why is the GOP putting so much distance between Bush/Cheney and themselves? Wasn’t Bush the very bestest president ever?

You’d think that, if they really believed their own alternate version of reality (Bush is the best president ever, the US economy is in great shape, Iraq is a shining example of democracy, etc.) they’d be parading those two like contestants at a beauty pageant.

Only the bottom of the barrel -that’d be the “conservative” visitors at ThinkProgress- can believe Pres Bush’s policies have been anything but an absolute disaster.

As long as only poor people were dying a couple million of them could get wiped out by Gustov and it wouldnt make Bush change his breakfast plans. The GOP knows he is political poison and they dont want him any where NEAR the convention. Once he is ex president if he is lucky enough to stay out of prison no republican will want his endorsements or him speaking for them
