DeLay: ‘It’s Unfortunate That We’re Not Going To Be Able To Have The Convention That They Planned’»

This morning on Fox News, former House Speaker Tom DeLay tried telling host Megyn Kelly how Republicans are focused on Hurricane Gustav, rather than their convention. He said that for President Bush, “politics is the least part of what he’s thinking about right now.” Regarding Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), DeLay said that he has “shifted his mindset away from the politics.”

Yet just a few seconds later, when Kelly again asked him about the convention, DeLay couldn’t help but let his true feelings show:

KELLY: As somebody who’s a party faithful, who’s a deep conservative, do you worry about how this will affect . . . the RNC this week, how it will affect people perceptions of the Republicans if it doesn’t go well. Help give us an idea of how you’re looking at it.

DELAY: Well, what we’re looking at is, it’s unfortunate that we’re not going to be able to have the convention that they planned, but that’s not what’s important right now.

Watch it:

Hurricane Katrina killed more than 1,600 people along the Gulf Coast. Gustav has now made landfall southwest of New Orleans as a category 2 storm, but approximately 10,000 people remain in the city.

Transcript:

MEGYN KELLY: Obviously, everyone from President Bush to Mayor Ray Nagin of New Orleans . . . are most concerned with the loss of life . . . they’ve already converted what were to be parties into fundraisers . . . here in St. Paul. But there was some politics to worry about, with respect to this storm and how the federal government helps handle it . . . because of what happened with Katrina.

TOM DELAY: Well, I know George W. Bush and politics is the least part of that he’s thinking about right now.

KELLY: What about John McCain?

DELAY: I think the same thing. John McCain’s a no-nonsense type guy and he has immediately, at lest from what I’ve seen in the last 24 hours, shifted his mindset away from the politics and the concern for the people on the Gulf Coast and it’s quite evident.

What??? No drunken carousing and endless whoring???

  2. Badmoodman Says:

Unless a Tom DeLay story involves jail time, it’s a non-story. Especially this one.

  3. Alejandro Says:

I mean, it’s not like he said that God was on the Democrats side.
    http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/ 2008/ 08/ 31/ dem-apologizes-for-joking-about-hurricane/

    That would be Don Fowler.
    And Michael Moore.

  4. cavjam Says:

Ask yourself this: Had there been no Katrina, would there be any alteration to the festival? No, there wouldn’t, IMO. It’s a “Jeez, let’s not remind people of our tone-deafness” thing. This is all about appearances. That, and any excuse to keep America from seeing Georgie get booed by his own party.

  5. Bob Says:

What’s important right now is helping people directly in path of the storm (like The Woodlands, TX) and not turning this into a political specticle, right tom?

  6. miatch Says:

    @Alejandro:
It was the REPUBLICANS that were praying for rain on Obama’s speech, led by Focus on the Family.

Moore was making fun of them for that. Republicans brought God into this, dummy.

  7. scytherius Says:

What is unfortunate was that DeLay wasn’t in a canoe in the Gulf when the storm hit.

  8. Alejandro Says:

Republicans did bring God into this and the Democrats followed suit.
They are no different, after all.

    dems and reps
They are no different, after all.

No they’re not. How can you even allude to that after what we’ve seen in the last 20 years.

  11. Bob Says:

It’s funny: polititians trying to make anything ‘not about politics’. That’s without being indicted and not during the week of their national convention. What a joke. It’d be a lot funnier if they didn’t keep getting elected (or appointed), though.

    __________

The GOOPers are serious when they bring “God” into affairs like this. Moore and Fowler were joking. That is a BIG difference.

  13. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre Says:

What is really unfortunate is that the convicted criminal Tom DeLay (former TX - Greed) has not yet been locked up…

Somewhere on a tarmac at the Phoenix Airport in Arizona there sits a three-year-old McCain birthday cake that is looking for its mother…

  14. kasinca Says:

Tom DeLay knows that he may be in prison the next time around and he wanted one last hooray!

  15. sectionop92 Says:

The Republicans think an invisible, omnipotent being will rein down on anyone whom is against them.

Thing is, God has a permanent voice mail and it really doesn’t check it…or play favorites. Just ask all the athletes who invoke Jesus’ name in the postgame, on the field interviews.

  16. Keith Says:

DeLay, when you get out of jail—-go back to bug extermination!

  17. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

I mean… just think about all those poor working girls, and boys, who’ll be stranded in Minneapolis, w/out the necessary funds to get home…

I wonder, will the GOOP have a telethon for them?

Will there be half price sales?

  18. flex Says:

Tom DeLay, evil Republican extremist, should be in jail and should not be allowed to spew his hate and bigoted stupidity in public.
Better hide DeLay, your vengeful god is gonna get ya!

Its UNFORTUNATE that Delay isn’t in jail or overdosed on bug spray.

  24. Krazny Says:

Given that so many of the right wing fundies were praying for a storm to break up Obama’s acceptance speech, I don’t really think that dems should have to apologize.

WYSIWYG (Whay You See Is What You Get)is an acronym for a computer programming method that is essentially just that–what you see will be the final product. It may work fine in computer programming but in Rethuglican Politics it just ain’t so. They are so afraid that you will see what is really there they consistently paint word pictures to change what you see. While it may be true that the hand is quicker than they eye, the Repukes always ignore that old adage that states: “A Rethuglican’s mouth is NEVER quicker than a Democrat’s brain.”

With great skill, dexterity, profound insight, and anti Rethuglican. Being polite to all but trolls and always recommending my comments will help.

Secondly, you did just fine above. Just cut, paste, and change it at will in the next comment box.

We are having a triple-decker triple-disaster triple-layer sandwich this week: Gustuv/GOP-RNC/Hanna. Tasty, huh?

It sounds like Mrs. McMoosekiller should be staying home full time to be with her kids. A four-mouth-old baby with Down’s syndrome? And her daughter is pregnant? Her family is a very complicated mess and she is busy preaching right-wing “family values?” And she wants to spend the next two months campaigning in the Lower 48? Oy veh.

  29. spencers mom Says:

On topic, Delay, blah blah blah, who cares.

OT, there is a new CBS poll that has Obama/Biden eight points ahead of McStain/Palin (poll is 48 - 40)

    http://www.cbsnews.com/ stories/ 2008/ 09/ 01/ opinion/ polls/ main4405106.shtml

This is the first poll out that includes both veeps. Most interesting number, to me, is that support from Independents went from McStain +12 to Obama +6 (now 43 - 37) which is a full 18 point flip.

I seriously doubt that, hurricane or not, the GOP convention was poised to flip these numbers back to McStain.

    PEACE

  30. spencers mom Says:

On another front, Palin has just hired a private attorney to defend herself and members of her staff in the investigation of the abuse of power charges.

Let’s see, this is Day 4 on the national scene, and we are drowning in Palin scandals!

I’m thinking someone handed J. Sydney the wrong list to choose from.

    PEACE

  31. questioneverything Says:

What is really unfortunate for the USA is that people like DeLay and Rove and their ilk are never called into question by the media. They are radicals–not Republicans. But even Democrats make no distinctions in their public statements. We give them far too much validity. And that is just how they plan to take over the country. Elections–how quaint.

  32. wizard2000 Says:

Why isn’t Karl Rove in jail?

In 2003, he participated in the outing of a covert CIA officer, putting him in the same traitorous criminal class as Aldrich Ames and Robert Hansen.

After New Orleans flooded following Hurricane Katrina’s landfall in late 2005, Bush, Cheney and Gonzales put Karl Rove in charge of the Republican political response to the disaster.

Karl Rove immediately launched a smear campaign against both the Democratic governor of Lousiana and the Democratic mayor of New Orleans…while at the same time he worked with DHS director Michael Chertoff in withholding federal disaster relief from the dying in the New Orleans.

Michael Brown, head of FEMA, and the FEMA disaster coordinator in Baton Rouge LA, were cut out of the loop. They tried to get desperately-needed disaster relief supplies and personnel to the dying in New Orleans, but they were blocked by higher-ups in the Bush administration.

We now know that Karl Rove, along with Bush, Cheney, Gonzales, Chertoff and probably even Rumsfeld, were trying to blackmail Democratic Louisiana Gov. Blanco into turning over to them control of her state’s national guard units, federalizing the disaster relief effort in Louisiana, with the Bushites handling security, and no doubt awarding Blackwater, and their pal Eric Prince, with lucrative, no-bid security contracts.

Recently, former Louisiana Gov. Blanco revealed that a full five days after Katrina hit and New Orleans flooded, on Friday, she was escorted onto Air Force One to see President George W. Bush. He demanded, once again, that she turn over control of her state’s national guard to him and his administration. She refused, again.

A year after this insidious blackmail attempt of the Louisiana governor, the Bush administration got the Republican-controlled Congress to enact legislation giving Bush the sole authority, following his declaration of an emergency, over any state’s security apparatus.

All fifty state governors, both Republicans and Democrats, protested vigorously against this legislation as it was being considered, but to no avail. It passed.

Now, the imperial (and criminal) President Bush, after declaring an emergency, can send in federal troops (and Blackwater) into any state, completely bypassing that state’s governor or any locally-elected officials.

Hooray! Mission Accomplished! Er, that is, Fascist Mission Accomplished!

BTW, are we still a Republic?

  33. wizard2000 Says:

Oh, and I have a new pledge of allegiance:

“I pledge allegiance to the Republican Flag of the Republican States of America, and the Republican Fascist Police State for which it stands, one nation under Republican Fascism, with liberty and justice for only Fascist Republicans….amen.”

“DeLay: ‘It’s Unfortunate That I’m Not Going To Be Able To Have The Political Career That I Planned’”

See? You can take what some people say and paraphrase it to say something more truthful than their original words!

spencers mom Says: “This is the first poll out that includes both veeps. Most interesting number, to me, is that support from Independents went from McStain +12 to Obama +6 (now 43 - 37) which is a full 18 point flip.”

    Mom,

You gotta understand that all the previous polls just asked Rethuglicans. The one you reference includes the “Independents” because so many of the Repukes changed registration the sample size got too small. Wait until the final poll on November 4. I Gay-ron-tee there won’t be a Repuke in sight.

  37. IBTunion4obama Says:

It’s probably best for the Re-thugs so they don’t embarrass themselves too much. I was just dying to her Bush and Cheney preach christian right-wing values and then me scratching my head thinking, “where are the strong right-wing family values on Palin’s unwed 17 yr old daughter?”

  38. Cal Malenky Says:

It’s unfortunate that DeLay isn’t in prison.

  39. Saint Augustine Says:

What a day this has been. Earlier I watched a discussion on C-SPAN where Tucker Carlson admits that newscasters should be more phony in order to be perceived as being fair and balanced. It is not that they should present the news without the slant of the prism that they look through, just that they are not doing a very good job of hiding their bias. What I got from Tucker is that it is OK to be biased, because he believes people expect it.

Then the announcement that the 16 or 17 year old daughter is pregnant and McLame knew about it. Unbelievable!

The republiscums are indeed scared of the appearance their convention would make compared to the Democratic Convention and have abandoned ship for a hurricane a thousand miles away.

Most recently during a commercial on MSNBC I surfed to Faux News to see Faux interviewing Emergency Management officials and Governors who all were spouting republiscum talking points about the “Republican Governors of these red states are…” It is sickening listeneng to these imbiciles anymore.

  40. Cats r Flyfishn Says:

To Tom Delay… just where did all that money go… to Abramoff then to the Republican Governors…
Looks like Sarah Palin has some ’splainin’ to do about some illegal campaign contributions during her run for governor.
    My2Bucks has the story.

  41. MapleStreet Says:

How many ethical censures and/or indictments are required before I can go on Faux ?

  42. Marie Says:

Why is anyone still interviewing this felon?

Many repugs are secretly grateful that attention is in LA now and not the RNC; it will help hide that so many of them were not going to attend anyway; that Bush/Cheney are a team-albatross around the necks of so many incumbents; that McCain is not their first choice for prez, but was chosen because he was the last one standing; now they can all stay home to devote their attention to the part of the country in need right now, and look like they are sacrificing for the greater good.

  43. jb Says:

What if the Republicans gave a convention and nobody came?

  44. tigger Says:

Sometimes you just have to go with the convention you have, not the convention you wish you had…

Jealous of the Democrats’ succesful convention much, DeLay?
