Gustav overtopping Industrial Canal barrier in New Orleans.

MSNBC is reporting that waters from Hurricane Gustav, now a Category 2 storm, have overtopped the Industrial Canal barrier in New Orleans, and FEMA Deputy Director Harvey E. Johnson has warned that New Orleans will be “at least partially flood[ed].” Officials have evacuated 2 million people from Louisiana, but an estimated 10,000 remain in New Orleans. Hurricane-force winds also “slammed into oil terminals around Port Fourchon,” which is southwest of New Orleans and where “56 percent of the imported and Gulf of Mexico oil entering the United States passes.”

Update CNN is reporting that Gustav has made landfall near Cocodrie, LA, southwest of New Orleans.

    Hi John Kerry:
How about a nice iced tea and a little session or must you run off so quickly as usual. Damn you are a busy fellow.

  3. Cal Malenky says:

Now they have to worry about Hurricane McCain blowing through.
No calm in his eye, just a promise of more of the same.

  5. fletc3her says:

I think it’s a shame that the Republicans are trying to use a natural disaster for political gain. Unfortunately, with the Bush administration in power the political party of the leaders *is* important, but it shouldn’t be like this. The federal aid which is provided to those who suffer a natural disaster should not be dependent on the results of the last election.

The senator from Arizona has no role to play in the response to this natural disaster. He is using the hurricane as a political backdrop, but I hope Americans can see through his stunts. The federal response to Hurricane Katrina was a national humiliation. If FEMA responds well to Hurricane Gustav it will merely be the restoration of the agency to its pre-Bush competence.

    John Kerry Says:

Mc Cain etc showed that REAL LEADERSHIP is the answer!!
    ______________

Hmmm… McStain hasn’t done anything. He’s only a candidate and has no authority in this situation.

JK seems to have forgotten Bush is still in office…

You really need to lay off the Sterno, John, before the organic damage is irreversible.

  7. Cal Malenky says:

    Kerry-
A Rep WAS in charge of the presidency but he was too busy pretending to play a guitar and posing with a cake with John McCain (R- AZ) to get involved. He had his Rep friend’s Rep friend Brownie doin’ a heckuva job trying to be a fashion god while the city drowned.

    John Kerry Says:

Hi troll coward. Sure glad you weren’t in a battle situation with me and I had to depend on you for my life.

  9. Fred says:

Everyone knows they will behave correctly this year. It’s an election year. Not so much when katrina hit…..connect the dots troll kerry.

  10. Krazny says:

To a certain extent the troll is right, had there been a republican gov Bush might have actually given a sh!t and done something useful instead of letting New Orleans drown.

  11. Fred says:

    John Kerry Says:
Despite Michael Moore and the libs trying to make Gustav into a political victory for them, Mc Cain etc showed that REAL LEADERSHIP is the answer!!

Yep, they have led us into war with no end, economic disaster, health care crises, de-regulated companies that are vital to the survival of our country, destroying our superpower status around the world, etc. aren’t we proud?

  12. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

To the ignorant troll going by the name of John Kerry. You are one stupid f**k! The difference between Katrina and Gustav is that Gustav is happening during an election year.

Oh and I am sure the people of New Orleans are put at ease knowing that George W. Bush and John McBush are closely monitoring the situation this time instead of sharing birthday cake together.

  13. Fred says:

I think you are idealistic but I respect that. I think it was thought out and decided intentionally….they had an agenda and it has worked out nicely for them.

What’s 1600 black Americans lives in comparison to taking over this city and turning it white?

    John Kerry:

Yes, Katrina was all the Democrats fault???

Fetal alcohol syndrome and meth addiction, what a bad combination. JK, you can do something about the meth addiction, the fetal alcohol syndrome, well that’s on your mother.

    ““““““““““““““““““““““““““`
Yet another ignorant comment by the clueless troll! It seems to me it’s been John McBush who has been using hurricane Gustav as a possible republican victory as it’s been him shown all over the TV channels briefing America that he and his running mate Peggy Hill will be in the Gulf area. Hmmm it sounds to me like McBush is looking for a photo op session to use for his faltering campaign!

  16. leftcoast says:

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis attacked Obama for criticizing McCain and Palin. “So he attacks us while there’s a hurricane going on and John McCain suspends his convention basically,” Davis said in an interview with the Politico. “What bigger contrast can you have about putting your country first?”

Mctakeadvantage didn’t suspend his convention. He simply moved it to the Gulf Coast.
And as far as putting country first; how so? His selection of a VP, the person a heartbeat away from the presidency, who’s claim to foreign policy experience is governing a state that’s close to Russia, is simply pandering for votes and definitely putting country last.

  17. gummitch says:

The biggest difference between Katrina and Gustav is Katrina. If everyone hadn’t seen the utter devastation wreaked by Katrina, most people wouldn’t believe how bad it could get, and many would refuse to evacuate. As it is, something like 2 million people have been evacuated from the area and only 10,000 diehards remain.

The population believes in hurricanes now, the government organized buses better this time because they’ve learned better, and people are allowed to take their pets with them on buses and into shelters. Something on the order of half the people who stayed through Katrina said it was because they wouldn’t abandon their pets.

  18. EugeneDebs says:

John Kerry says, something really ignorant as is his wont. I am sure it seems that way JK to ALL the incredibly ignorant brainwashed hiveminders like you. The last time you had an original thought was when it told you to turn on the AM Radio

  19. McWars says:

When will troll Kerry STOP HATING AMERICA?

  20. dbadass says:

John Kerry is long gone. John is sort of afraid to actually engage in a discussion. You might call him a pussy that way. Anyway…

  21. tom says:

While there are still significant threats on the Gustav horizon, I am relieved that it has weakened to Cat 3 and may spare the Gulf Coast. A couple of observations:

    1. it is really unfortunate that the federal response and the security and support this time is somehow being hailed as remarkable when it just simply is what should be expected from a competent and effective government

    2. once the threat fully subsides within the next 24 hours, let us all hope that the republicans can return to their convention and get their message out to America; I think it’s important for them to communicate what they have to offer — zip, zilch, nada

  22. McWars says:

“John Kerry” is a pansy 4 eternity.

  23. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

John McCin puts America first!?! Bah ha ha ha ha!

He puts Iraq first over his own country:
1-We spend billions of dolars to rebuild Iraq’s infrastructure
leaving our country near bankrupt so that we are unable to rebuild our own dteriorating infrastructure.

2-He puts the security of Iraq first over the security of his own country by wanting to leave our military stretched dangerously thin in Iraq for 10, 20, 50, 100 years.

3-Continues to support Bush’s failed war in Iraq which has created more enemies for our country.

  24. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Nothing new here. The republicans politicized 9/11, they politicize the war and now they are politicizing a hurricane.

  25. barfly says:

Bob Geiger details the failings of McCain during Katrina:

    [snip]

Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Joe Biden jumped immediately to the aid of hurricane victims in the week after the 2005 disaster, authoring S.Amdt. 1661 “…to provide emergency funding for victims of Hurricane Katrina.”

Biden’s legislation would have provided many things including money to purchase
interoperable communications equipment to help first-responders dealing with the disaster, $10 million “to find, unite, and transport children impacted by Hurricane Katrina to their parents, legal guardian, or next of kin” and funding to assist victims of domestic violence in affected areas.

“The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina has revealed the best and the worst about our great Nation. It has revealed a great economic divide that exists among our citizens, while it demonstrated as well the capacity of the majority of our citizens to be compassionate and even heroic during times of great need,” said Biden in arguing for his bill. “It also exposed the demons of some who will use any opportunity to prey on the weak.”

“The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has reported that over 1,000 children have been displaced by this storm — that means they are not with their parents or guardians — and in this amendment we provide $10 million for that effort,” Biden continued. “We also provide $9 million to support domestic violence victims impacted by the storms. We all heard of the reports of sexual assaults in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and we will support those victims who have not been moved to new shelters.”

But with John McCain’s help, the Republican-led Senate shot down the funding on a 41-56 vote with McCain voting against, while Biden and Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama voted for the funding.

When Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) proposed the creation of a Congressional Commission to “examine the Federal, State, and local response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina.. and make immediate corrective measures to improve such responses in the future,” John McCain was once again exactly where George W. Bush wanted him to be: On the “nay” side of a straight party-line vote (44-54 ) that killed that legislation.

And lest you think it was McCain taking a stand against what might become a Democratic witch hunt on the failures of his bosses in the White House, the bill called for a wholly bipartisan panel, stating specifically of the 10-member group that “not more than 5 members of the Commission shall be from the same political party.”

Unlike McCain, Barack Obama was one of the cosponsors of that bill and both he and Biden voted for immediate oversight on the bungled Katrina response.

    But that’s not all…

The most heinous troll JK who steals the name of the honorable Viet Nam War hero better add something to his diet of lead paint chips, he’s down to the last few brain cells he was born with.

  27. leftcoast says:

    McCain on Katrina
Forty Senators and 100 members of Congress visited New Orleans before he did; he finally got there in March 2006.

He voted against establishing a Congressional commission to examine the Federal, State, and local responses to Katrina in med-September 2005.

He voted against allowing up to 52 weeks of unemployment benefits to people affected by the hurricane.

Voted against appropriating $109 billion in supplemental emergency funding, including $28 billion for hurricane relief.

    Oh, he shows leadership, alright.

  28. freeman says:

The flood waters are overtopping the constitutional barriers of our democracy as well !!! Pray we weather this storm as a nation !

  29. McWars says:

Pretty sad, huh? The coordination in reponse to the threat of a major hurricane to Republicans is about learning from their political mistakes, having their sights set on regaining political capital lost three years ago.

I’ve never seen government leaders with shorter learning curves.

  30. Krazny says:

    Fred,

Perhaps I am an idealist. I don’t think the color of the skin of residents had anything to do with Bush’s apathy towards New Orleans in 2005, I think it had more to do with the amount of money in their wallets.

I don’t think Bush is a racist, but he does hate poor people.

  34. Shayne says:

I have to agree pretty much with Karzny. With the addition that they were happy to see old people done in early. Bushco certainly had no problem watching old white poor people die a horrible death that would make most of us ill to see happen to a dog.

  38. Shayne says:

To play Devil’s Advocate – if we want Obama to stand up to McCain’s lies, then should we stand up to all Conservative lies?

I do think that the years that we’ve been debunking the right-wing trash talk is one of the reasons that Obama is going to be our next President.

Keeping silent hurt Al Gore and the real John Kerry.

  45. McWars says:

  47. spencers mom says:

Hey all, sorry to post OT, but I found a very interesting, and very scary, article about Palin and her being part of the Dominionists.

Now, I’ve never heard that phrase before, but in reading the article, this sounds like the rightest of the right, the wingnuttiest of the wingnuts of the Christofascists.

It seems that several folks, knowing that Palin hadn’t been actually vetted, decided to apply the same vetting standards the media has taken with Barack, and they did some “pastor vetting” of their own.

I don’t normally link to Kos, but it’s worth a read:

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/8/29/163234/559/495/579213

Also, there seems to be evidence that Palin is associated with the “Alaska Independence” party, which advocates for succession and total ownership of Alaskan resources.

    Scary chick. Just sayin’…

    Hi McWars!

And the so-called moral majority had a problem with Bill Clinton? But why are they so silent on McCain’s degradation of women?

Yesterday, I watched part of a focus group on C-SPAN of undecided voters. After they were shown part of that speech, their opinion of Palin went down. At the end of the group, which was run by nutzoid Frank Luntz, 8 favored McCain and 16 favored Obama.

In any event, Katrina turned Louisiana into an indisputably Rep state. So what are you squawking about?

  50. freeman says:

    Hey no worries Mac ,

I bet this would have been swept under the carpet were it not for the rumors about her infant. I expect the baby will be premature:

The Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has announced that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

It reached landfall as a Category 2, which obviously will be less destructive than a five, but it will undoubtably be touted as ‘lessons learned’ and ‘Oh, look how effective we can be given a second chance.’

Effective leadership is getting it right the first time with the ability to correct for the unexpected, but without the unexpected being an excuse for not overcoming. Pretty much every major disaster during this prez is justified by saying that it was a surprize that could not be accounted for. Just like the issue of responsibility for 9/11, taken by itself is one thing, but there is a whole string of things like that, including the response to Katrina and other natural disasters.

  66. unbelievable says:

spencers mom Says: I hope there are millions of Americans paying attention to J. Sydney’s judgement.

I’m irritated to the point of numbness with the MSM. Obama showed class in assuming there are large numbers of voters still on the fence, voters waiting until October to make up their minds (watched the segment on 60 minutes). Obama is doing the right thing by putting in a hard day’s work non-stop, no contest there. I’m not saying he should relax, but the MSM isn’t doing enough to recognize his voter base as being a lot more about the national issues and a lot less about “experience.” Voters during the primaries were routinely rejecting former governers — Romney, Richardson, Huckabee, others.

At least we have hidden-gem coverage like C-SPAN, which gives us more proof that we are RIGHT about the misleading polls!

  71. spencers mom says:

Well, here’s BushCo’s and Palin’s “abstinence only” education in practice, right before our eyes!

So let me understand this. Bristol, who had to miss 4 – 8 months (depending where you read) of school because of contagious mono, got pregnant last spring and therefore couldn’t be the mother of Trig?

Poor kid, I see a very convenient miscarriage in her near future. Or a very late delivery next spring!

    Try again, spinmiesters!

    PEACE

  72. dbadass says:

Bristol? Trig? These names have got to be the result of lax marijuana laws…

  73. unbelievable says:

McWars Says: At least we have hidden-gem coverage like C-SPAN, which gives us more proof that we are RIGHT about the misleading polls!

    Excellent points.

I watched the entire convention on CSPAN and PBS. It was nice to be an adult who decided who I wanted to hear and then could decide what I thought about what I’d just head without some conservative talking head telling me what to hear and what to think about it.

  74. spencers mom says:

    Here’s an interesting question:

If it wasn’t for the weekend of online rumors about the “baby mama” quesion, when exactly were the Family Values ticket going to announce the upcoming blessed event?

This new info is not going to stop those investigating just who gave birth in April!

BUT, this is the excuse that will be used when Palin is removed from the ticket by the weekend. She needs to “spend more time with her family.”

    PEACE

  75. RUCerious says:

Even if this is true, there’s still the issue of what kind of judgement does it display when, after your water breaks with your FIFTH child, instead of having the baby delivered in a safe environment, you spend eight hours on a flight, then instead of going to a hospital in Anchorage, you spend additional time going to Bumfuk, AK to have the delivery, by a doctor who’s no longer on staff, or perhaps on the planet.

  76. McWars says:

I couldn’t agree more, freeman. We’re stronger with criticism from our own, which is labeled by the neonuts as “party division.” If people can’t clearly view our party as one willing to improve its delivery, they will feel comfortable going back-and-forth to republicans because they would see nothing to lose. Once we’ve finished our work to get Obama elected we must be welcoming, at the same time critical.

  77. barfly says:

    ucsbclassics53 Says:

Example “a,” for why responding to trolls like JK is a waste of keystrokes. JK’s been yanked from the thread, and all the responses to him just look silly, hanging there by themselves.

  78. RUCerious says:

Why is her daughter having sex whilst ill with Mononucleosis for eight months>?
What kind of family values are those?
