Sarah Palin announces her teenage daughter is pregnant.»

palin.jpgIn a statement released just as Hurricane Gustav was striking the Gulf Coast, Sarah Palin and her husband announced their 17-year old daughter is pregant and plans to keep the baby. “Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that, as parents, we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned,” the Palins wrote. “We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents.” McCain officials said the news of the daughter’s pregnancy was being released to rebut what one aide called “mud-slinging and lies” circulating on liberal blog sites.

UpdateThe Huffington Post recalls that in November 2006, then gubernatorial candidate Sarah Palin declared that she would not support an abortion for her own daughter even if she had been raped.
UpdateBen Smith notes that Palin has previously said she would not support "explicit sex-ed programs."
Update"Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter's pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way."

Perhaps Alaska’s Child Protective Services should be looking into the welfare of the kids in a family where a 17 years old child with ‘mono’, is having sex. Isn’t mono contagious? For eight months?

I missed the last three months of my freshman year in high school (I was 14) because of mono. The only thing I remember about it was sleeping 15 hours a day, and wanting to sleep the other 9.

  22. tom Says:

The McNumbNuts campaign better keep releasing BS like this so it can distract from the really funny stuff that’s surfacing about Failin’ Palin. Here’s a real side-splitter from a questionnaire she completed when running for Alaska governor in 2006:

Q: Are you offended by the phrase “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?

PALIN: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance

What a delightfully patriotic — but perfectly ignorant — response!

When McNumbNuts’ grandfather graduated from the Naval Academy in 1906, the Pledge of Allegiance, as first written, was only fourteen years old. It would not be made the official pledge of the United States until 1942, six years after McNumbNuts himself was born.

And, of course, the words “Under God” were not in the Pledge. They would not appear there until 1954, during McNumbNuts’ senior year of high school.

So, his own vice presidential candidate doesn’t know a stick of history — but still feels perfectly qualified to opine on it anyway. I guess that’s why he thinks she is a “soulmate”. Just like him, she is always wrong but never in doubt.

Totally agree, Tom. That’s how they think they can claim that the family is grieving and won’t discuss the issue further. Bet Sarah needs to drop off the ticket, too, to spend time with her family.

But this little smoke and mirrors trick will not keep the investigation from continuing. Medical records or DNA testing could put it all to rest, but won’t happen.

More and more teenagers are having unplanned pregnancies. This is a huge problem that conservatives are on the wrong side of. If conservatives really wanted to reduce abortion (and unplanned pregnancy) the would abandon abstinence only (that is a nice idea, that obviously doesn’t work) for a more realistic emphasis on sex education and birth control availability.

This pregnancy (as well as the alarmingly increasing number of others) could (should) be a catalyst for a change in that conservative approach.

like the Jerry Springer show around here.
    Bob Barr 2008

hope Bristol is doing okay and that she avoids the media spotlight. She must be terrified. I can’t imagine, though, why Palin would want to subject her daughter to so much public scrutiny when she knew this information would come out. But honestly, thinking about my own family…I do a pretty good job telling my own daughters to ignore the liberal hollywood culture and the “role models” like Britney Spears and LIndsay Lohan it produces. But what do I tell my daughter now if she asks why she should hold herself to a higher moral standard? Who can I point to to say: See, honey? This young lady chose to think about her education, her career, her future, and chose to wait. And how can a “strong feminist conservative mother” who can’t even instill conservative values in her own child hope to represent this country for all the world to see? God bless them, and help them.

Whew. That’s some kind of headfake. Now I’m not so sure about Palin.

  62. backup Says:

I just went home (Southern Illinois) for a vacation. What I found alarming was not necessarily the unplanned pregnancies - but planned pregnancies from unwed mothers.

We ran into several late teen and early twenty mother’s that were unwed. They had children from different father’s and were planning more (from either the same fathers or even different fathers).

I don’t really have a hang up with unwed mothers. Everybody’s circumstance is different. What I was concerned with was the reasoning. These were relatively educated women. The father’s had jobs and/or decent money from other sources. The women were deciding not to married because of significant government assistence that they would forego if they got married.

I’ve got no problem with women who have children without getting married. I do have a problem with a situation where women are planning families with the intent that it will be the government (you and me) and not the fathers, that will be supporting them.

It’s a calculated risk on her part. Which would be most damaging, a pregnant daughter or a very big lie with some laws broken? I do believe it is illegal to falsify a birth certificate. So which would you rather have, a VP with a pregnant daughter or a VP who tells very big lies and participates in coverups? They will say “would you say that about the father”. My reply is, yes. Someone needs to be home with that baby. If the father wants to take on the job, more power to him. But, apparently, the father’s job is more important than his new son, as is his mother’s.

  77. Crusty Old Bastard Says:

This story reminds me of the time two buddies and I were fishing off the coast near Channel Islands in California. The Fish and Game boat came along side and wanted to see our fishing licenses. After much tap dancing and flashing what we hoped would be taken as three licenses instead of two the warden said “I have seen three fishermen and three licenses now I am coming aboard to see all six at once.” Fortunately we got off with a lecture.

The point: Tap Dancing doesn’t work. The public should see two Mommas and two babies—all at once—together—NOW—not six months from now. The Birth Certificates would help but would not be proof since the State issues the certificates and the Governor may have used some influence—again. There are many ways of proving parenthood and saying so isn’t one of them.

This is not intended to be a moral judgement concerning the baby or babies, as the case may be, because I really don’t give a damn either way. It is, however, intended to be a judgement of the Republican morals that make such a fiasco possible. And even worse is the thought that the Repukes think that we, the general public, are dumb enough to believe them.

  86. JMOHR Says:

First, even the later posts at the Daily Kos tend to agree that there is photographic evidence supporting that the Governor was indeed pregnant at the time of her Dallas speech and totally irresponsible actions as a mother who was going into delivery. This is the point that should be pressed. Second, not only does the mother show absolutely irresponsible care for her own child; she also backs a form of sex education that increases the likelihood of unwed pregnancies. Her views on sex education must be pressed in public.

Yes, this is the Jerry Springer world of politics.

The legal age of consent in Alaska is 16, but weirdly only if the other person is 18 (at least that’s how it appears to me) The minimum age to marry in Alaska is 18. People under the age of 18 can marry with the consent of both parents.

Alaskan law recognizes statutory rape only in cases involving an age difference of more than 3 years. A 17 year old male who has consensual sex with a 15 year old girl is not guilty of statutory rape.

Personally I think 16 is a practical arbitrary choice for the age of consent but with the caveat that 16 year old’s should be thoroughly educated about contraception, the perils of STD’s and the responsibilities and impact of pregnancy, birth and parenting (and about actual–not just statutory–rape.

  106. JMOHR Says:

This should go to the very heart of the conservative and Republican values debate. The theme must be constant. Palin is not qualified to be president. She took undue risks with the birth of her last child and stands behind a form of sex education that has a proven track record of failing and creating more teenage unwed mothers. (Do not even have to mention her child. What will she do? Claim that the liberals are attacking her personally? Let them. Our answer should simply be that there are too many unwed pregnancies resulting in abortions [legal choice, but easily avoided by contraception}. Then ask if the daughter’s pregnancy was one of choice or ignorance.)

For Palin to condemn valid sex education, but then wind up with a preganant daughter demonstrates that she lacks the integrity to tell other people how they should raise their children on a diet of ignorance and denial.

Palin chose to step into the spotlight. If she cannot live up to her own ideals, then how can you expect us to see her as a person of high integrity as you were demanding yesterday?

-Why does no one care about the Keating 5 scandal?
Now with Palin? This is just too much.
George Bush/John McCain republicans do not care about women’s issues or rights - they’ve sacrificed Sarah Palin - a perfect distraction, all the while Bush/McCain/Palin are trying to be the Gustav heroes…anything to make us forget about their convention no one wants to attend. I agree that as Sarah Palin is pro abstinence-only education and now her teenage daughter is pregnant she should maybe address this but, I wont hold my breath - I’m sure corporate media’s message on this will have to do with respecting THEIR privacy, blah, blah, blah. Corporate Media is allowed to be selectively respectful.
This site is smarter than these tabloid distractions - In addition to the the article below, I also remember seeing something online about Cheney possibly going to Georgia - any news on that? Should we really be ignoring Cheney?

“As the nation focuses on Sen. John McCain’s choice of running mate, President Bush has quietly moved to expand the reach of presidential power by ensuring that America remains in a state of permanent war.”
    —————————————————————
I just want to remind the smart people, you guys - the ones that can retain news and history - the ones that are immune(?) to these distractions and political ploys meant to divide us - we are not so many - there are far too many voters out there just now tuning in. This site does a good job cataloging McCain’s hypocrisy but the way CNN paints it, there are actually poor people out there who think McCain is a good idea.
“Some people say” Americans are stupid and that we have let this happen, apathy and such - I’ll admit this is about all I’ve done (typing) & gave some $$ to Ron Paul but I can’t afford to go anywhere, just to work. Corporate Media did this to us - it’s their job to make us care and make us aware instead, they’ve funneled $$$ and technology into propaganda and distraction. Until Corporate Media is held accountable, they will be the ones scripting our futures.

Unbelievable. I accept your point about Palin promoting abstinence and her daughter getting pregnant as weaking her argument on the issue. I don’t think that it is an integrity issue, because her daughter’s actions aren’t her actions. Embarrassing in light of her position? Yes. A question of integrity. I don’t think so.

  151. Innocent Bystander Says:

“Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter’s pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.”

So POW Guy decides to take on a VP with a Down’s syndrome baby and a 16YO pregnant daughter? How focused is she going to be on the country’s business? If this is true…and I doubt that McCain was appraised of all of this in advance…this reflects a profound like of judgment by McCain. I suspect that the campaign was totally blindsided by this and now thinks it has no choice but to pretend that they knew and accepted it. Otherwise, she’s off the ticket. No good out for McSame.

It won’t surprise me in the least if this new ‘pregnancy’ is to divert the attention away from the questions on Trig’s birth. What are the odds that such a rumor could blossom within days and then have this announcement that Bristol is 5 MONTHS Pregnant? It’s too damn coincidental and I’m going to follow this story with great interest. This story only has to hold up until 11/4/08.

The wonders of faith-based birth control. I mean, poor kid, leave her alone. But she is going to NOT be advised to avoid getting married at 17. Who among us knew a goddamned thing at 17? She wasn’t advised to use birth control so her life wouldn’t be ruined. Abortion aside (as I can certainly understand why she might decide not to get one) the extreme right wing approach to life flat ruins lives. How sad

Does this not send your mind into overload??Values? What values? The hypocracy is just breathtaking! How did she get pregnant…17 years old..how old is the guy? My daughter’s 17..but we certainly have had conversations about responsibility and character…Things happen, I understand that. But she has a mother that supports abstinence only, no sex ed, no condoms, no birth control. What does she have to say about the spread of AIDS? AND, if the daughter got raped, (not saying she did in this case)she wouldn’t accept abortion as an alternative. This woman would put ALL women back in the Dark Ages!!! Since when do THEY get to tell ME what I get to do with myself OR my daughter?? That’s way they call it CHOICE! Not right for you, then don’t do it!Nobody’s making you…this is archaic! I’m angry, resentful and I have a voice with my vote…This whole thing is a disgrace to the American public…Thanks, McCain. Your “judgement” speaks VOLUMES!

Despite their selection of names, the Palin family is more like redneck/Alaska. No clue about the outside world fom their own little town, just hunt, fish, ride snowmobiles, shoot moose and bear, get married young and have babies. Oh, and go to church.

  158. desertflower1 Says:

Oh yeah…I guess that “absinence” thingy doesn’t work so well as the only method!! Give me a break.

She didn’t do her job as a parent and teach her daughter how to avoid becoming pregnant. She is against the school’s teaching her daughter the same. How does she have any integrity, her daughter has been victimized by her ignorance.

Remember, she is running on “Family Values”.

Weren’t there a bunch of goopers who were up in arms about teen pregnancy rates after the movie Juno?

Did anyone see Bella? A similar take on an unplanned pregnancy resulting in adoption as a human kindness. A sweet film, but the message was too much for me: give birth to your illegitimate baby and give it to someone who needs to raise a child to redeem or save him/herself as a human.

  161. backup Says:

The question of whether Palin is qualified to be President? Unbelievable, you told me that Obama is as qualified as Lincoln was when he became president. I took that to mean that experience doesn’t necessarily equate to good performance.

I’ll have to go back and look at the threads from yesterday, but I still have the impression that Obama’s experience is relatively similar to Palin’s. Palin has not been vetted by the election process, but she’s also 2nd on the ticket, while Obama is leading the Democrat ticket.

Here’s my take on each candidates experience.

Obama went and was a professor at law school and was a state senator from Illinois for some period of time. He was then elected to the U.S. Senate and has been a Senator for 3 years. He has been campaigning for President for 2 years and shown up for only half the votes (McCain’s record is worse). He’s the member of several committees and the chair of a couple. He has been the co-sponsor of over 600 bills (his involvement as co-sponsor, I don’t know). He has also been the sponsor of 2 bills that actually made it to law. The significance of those laws, I’m not sure. He’s the sponsor of two laws.

I not as confident about Palin but I’m working on it. She started at the PTA (mother of 5, 4 if you prefer). Elected to small town mayor. Lost a run for Lt. Governor. Elected to Governor on reform platform. Apparently worked with democrats to raise tax on oil companies. Also headed bi-partisan effort for successful natural gas pipeline. Sold the governors jet (fought excess government waste). Pushed thru a $1200 rebate per capita to help Alaskans with high energy costs. Fought corruption within republican party (I need to get more detail). Opposed bridge to nowhere (this is in dispute).

Relatively, the experience of the two are similar. Both relatively inexperienced to be President. Obama’s on the top of the ticket. (He’ll be President day one). Palin’s the number 2 (McCain would have to die or leave). Obama’s been vetted. Palin has not. (Aside: Biden has also been vetted and overlooked by the American people in the primary).

    Yep……… hypocrisy much???

  163. backup Says:

Fred, I agree with you. Assuming she did not want to get pregnant, Palin’s daughter is a victim of a lack of sex education and availability of birth control.

I disagree with Palin’s support for abstinence only and opposition to sex education.

  164. CitizenE Says:

Senator Obama’s response: perhaps this will do something to ameliorate this adolescent outburst on the left and get us back to the task at hand:

I have heard some of the news on this and so let me be as clear as possible. I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people’s families are off limits, and people’s children are especially off limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics, it has no relevance to governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18. And how family deals with issues and teenage children that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that is off limits.”

Of course, in Botch’s case, no amount of experience in the world would equate w/ good performance.
