Bush equates ‘angry Left’ with North Vietnamese torturers.

Tonight in his address via satellite to the Republican National Convention, President Bush blasted Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) critics. Invoking McCain’s time as a POW in a North Vietnamese prison, Bush compared these torturers to members of the “angry Left”:

If the Hanoi Hilton could not break John McCain’s resolve to do what is best for his country, you can be sure the angry Left never will.

Bush received a loud, standing ovation. Watch it:

I'm listening to Fred Thompson now tell us what a great Navy officer McCain was during his POW confinement. I don't care about his trials and tribulations -- after the way Kerry and Cleland had their military reputations trashed, the truth doesn't matter -- where the hell is "POW Veterans for Truth"?

Damn right (pardon the pun) the left is angry.

  7. EugeneDebs Says:

The angry LEFT? After a couple of decades of Limbaugh, Hannity, the Weinerdog Savage and Ann Coulter they have the NERVE to talk about the angry left????? These psychos are disgusting. They have their irony genes removed at birth. They are shameless and consistantly blame the left for what they are doing except ten times WORSE. The capacity for self delusion these subhuman idiots display is simply astonishing.

  8. tom Says:

I just wish the "angry left" in Congress had had the balls to file articles impeachment on that little tin cowboy and his boss, Darth Cheney. The both of them would have folded like cheap suits and resigned immediately.

The last thing we can possibly afford at this juncture is to allow their failed party to hold onto the White House for another four years with the likes of McNumbNuts and Failin' Palin.

  9. Chocolate Jesus Says:

keep talking bush, if the dems are smart every good word you say about john mccain will end up in an obama commercial, played right alongside several of the million other stupid, ridiculous, blatantly false things you've said..

  10. 1st Republic 14th Star Says:

Thompson is telling about McCain's POW experience and just told the story about McCain giving up the names of the offensive linemen of the Green Bay Packers when he was tortured to give up the names of the pilots in his squadron. Since McCain has only recently telling that story, and since he has also said it was the Steelers (when addressing a Pittsburgh audience), it's clear to me that the GOP doesn't think his lies will be held against him -- if they were worried, they'd tell Thompson to stay away from that story.

funny thing about all this is that bush has made more of an effort to negotiate with and deal on friendly terms with the North Vietnamese than he has the half of THIS country who doesnt agree with him on every single issue..

Your point is well taken though, McCain is no more likely to heed working Americans anymore than you did.

    (1) Arnold Schwartzenegger was "uninvited" tonight after he threw his support behind Obama

    (2) Smokin' Joe specifically requested Thompson for his "fluffer" -- er, warm-up act

    (3) Giuliani got pulled from the schedule either because (a) even the republicans are tired of "noun/verb/9-11" or (b) he's being held back as a designated hitter when Failin' Palin withdraws from the race "for personal reasons"

  76. And the beat goes on Says:

“. . .two weeks into his stay at the Vietnamese hospital, the Hanoi press began quoting him. It was not ‘name rank and serial number, or kill me’. as specified by the military code of conduct. McCain divulged specific military information: he gave the name of the aircraft carrier on which he was based, the number of U.S. pilots that had been lost, the number of aircraft in his flight formation, as well as information about the location of rescue ships.”

“…McCain was held for five and half years. The first two weeks’ behavior might have been pragmatism, but McCain soon became North Vietnam’s go-to collaborator…..McCain cooperated with the North Vietnamese for a period of three years. His situation isn’t as innocuous as that of the French barber who cuts the hair of the German occupier. McCain was repaying his captors for their kindness and mercy.

    http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn04192008.html

    and

    McCain Aviation Career

McCain crashed 5 jets, plus was responsible for the Forrestal fire. Something made the plane behind McCain fired a rocket,
which hit McCain's external center fuel tank, and caused a fire. McCain panicked, and dropped two bombs into the fire.

Did He Start The USS Forrestal Fire?

Surviving crewmen and those who investigated the Forrestal fire case reported that McCain deliberately 'wet-started' his A-4E Skyhawk to shake up the guy in the F-4 Phantom behind his plane.
    Incompetence Or A Stunt

'Wet-starts', done either deliberately (the starter motor switch allowed kerosene to pool in the engine and give a wet start) or accidentally, shoot a large flame from the tail of the aircraft. 'Wet starting' was a common practice among young 'hot-dog' pilots.

    Zuni Rockets Were Volatile Design

In McCain's case, the 'wet-start' 'cooked off' and launched the M34 Zuni rocket from the rear F-4 that punctured the Skyhawk's fueltank, knocked the M-65 1000 lb bomb off it's 500 lb rated mount, and touched off the explosions and massive fire.

    The Carrier Oriskany

The USS Oriskany came along side to treat the wounded.

    Wounded Flown Out

They were transferred to other ships.

    McCain Left With The Wounded

When the carrier Oriskany came along side, and McCain was put in a chopper and whisked away. McCain was the only Forrestal crewman to be immediately transferred.
    The Forrestal Crew

I have a hunch McCain left for his own safety, because the crew wanted blood.
    http://judicial-inc.biz/82jjohn_mccain_and_the_uss_forresta.htm

So, Bush lied tonight (gasp) and so did Fred Thompson (yawn.) McInsane was not injured. Daddy flew him out with the wounded to protect Wetstart Songbird McInsane. Sad part is, even if confronted with the truth, these koolaid drinkers wouldn't believe it.

Sorry, but that story is not true. The fire was caused by an electrical surge which caused one of the Zuni rockets to fire on the deck of the Forestall, tearing open a fuel tank on one or two jets waiting to take off, causing the fire. Things went seriously downhill from there, as we all know.

McCain has done enough shit, let's stop spreading this fairy tale.

  92. And the beat goes on Says:

    Zooey,

I happen to believe the Wayne Madsen Report rather than the "shit" you claimed.

"November 20, 2007 -- More details emerge on McCain carrier incident.

WMR has learned additional details regarding the deadly fire aboard the Navy aircraft carrier, the USS Forrestal, on July 19, 1967 in the Gulf of Tonkin. The additional details point to then-Lieut. Commander John McCain playing more of a role in triggering the fire and explosions than previously reported.

On January 16, 2006, WMR reported that according to a U.S. Navy sailor who was aboard the Forrestal on the fateful day of the fire, 'McCain and the Forrestal's skipper, Capt. John K. Beling, were warned about the danger of using M-65 1000-lb. bombs manufactured in 1935, which were deemed too dangerous to use during World War II and, later, on B-52 bombers. The fire from the Zuni misfire resulted in the heavy 1000 pounders being knocked loose from the pylons of McCain's A-4, which were only designed to hold 500-pound bombs.' WMR further reported, 'The unstable bombs had a 60-second cook-off threshold in a fire situation and this warning was known to both Beling and McCain prior to the disaster.'

WMR also cited the potential that McCain's Navy records were used against him by the neocons in control of the Pentagon, 'The neo-cons, who have had five years to examine every file within the Department of Defense, have likely accessed documents that could prove embarrassing to McCain, who was on board the USS Forrestal on July 29, 1967, and whose A-4 Skyhawk was struck by an air-to-ground Zuni missile that had misfired from an F-4 Phantom.'

WMR has been informed that crewmen aboard the Forrestal have provided additional information about the Forrestal incident. It is believed by many crewmen and those who have investigated the case that McCain deliberately 'wet-started' his A-4E to shake up the guy in the plane behind his A-4. 'Wet-starts', done either deliberately or accidentally, shoot a large flame from the tail of the aircraft.

In McCain's case, the 'wet-start' apparently 'cooked off' and launched the Zuni rocket from the rear F-4 that touched off the explosions and massive fire. The F-4 pilot was reportedly killed in the conflagration.

'Wet starting' was apparently a common practice among young 'hot-dog' pilots. McCain was quickly transferred to the USS Oriskany (the only Forrestal crewman to be immediately transferred). After the disaster, McCain was shot down over North Vietnam on October 26, 1967.
As WMR previously reported, at the time of the Forrestal disaster, McCain's father, Admiral John McCain, Jr., was Commander-in-Chief of US Naval Forces Europe (CINCUSNAVEUR) and was busy covering up the details of the deadly and pre-meditated June 8, 1967, Israeli attack on the NSA spy ship, the USS Liberty. The fact that both McCains were involved in two incidents just weeks apart that resulted in a total death count of 168 on the Forrestal and the Liberty, with an additional injury count of 234 on both ships (with a number of them later dying from their wounds) with an accompanying classified paper trail inside the Pentagon, may be all that was needed to hold a Sword of Damocles over the head of the 'family honor'-oriented McCain by the neocons.

The Excel Center is supposed to be a pretty big place (primary tenant is the Minnesota Wild of the NHL), I think it holds more than the Pepsi Center.

I agree with your sentiment, however, the capacity for these venues is as follows:

    Xcel Center: official capacity 18,064
Pepsy Center: capacity 17,600 - 20,100 depending on the event

So, I don't think the GOPers can argue that the abundance of empty seats is the result of the size of their venue.

I think Bush was talking about you guys when he spoke of the angry left. This blog is a magnet for the most vicious, unhappy bunch of crybabies. Why don't YOU do something to make this country better instead of blaming the President. The congress has a Democratic majority. Write you congressman with your valid complaints. See you doctor about getting Prozac, but do something constructive and stop whinning.

Suit yourself. You're deluding yourself. Here's a map of the flight deck of the USS Forestall. Any "wet start" would have blown out to sea.

  102. pete Says:

After the love fest, and the wholehearted worship of virtually every dubious "accomplishment" of the Worst President Ever, they won't be able to separate McSpin from Chimpy with crowbars and explosives.

Record disapproval has become an issue, once again, and the McSpin campaign orchestrated it. Does anyone still think they are making an honest effort to present a strong, "independent" candidate?

  103. dbadass Says:

  111. barfly Says:

If the Hanoi Hilton could not break John McCain’s resolve to do what is best for his country, you can be sure the angry Left never will.

    We won't have to.

The guy is so politically ham-handed, he'll pilot his own defeat.

Crashing is really the only thing he's good at.

  112. Fred Says:

And he obviously lied for political gain. Didn't he say he was going to be a uniter not a divider, didn't he say he was going to bring respect and accountability to Washington?

Ok, but none of his people have to answer to anyone, see..

  113. Fred Says:

    good_golly8 Says:

How about it gg, will you admit that it's god's will if Obama gets elected?

  114. pete Says:

Well jeepers Gigi. Maybe I'm not outraged because Sen. Biden hasn't claimed that military service is an excuse for lying our country into war? Not to mention all the other character flaws the Reichwhiners want us to ignore?

Here's the deal. What Chimpy did, with McSpin's duplicity, is unforgivable. Period. It's not negotiable. The GOP is damaged goods and I will do everything in my limited power to strip them of any vestige of power.

I will vote for, campaign for, and contribute to any half-way respectable candidate who doesn't have an (R) after their name. And the only thing that could change that is if GOP prosecutors and judges lock up every last member of the Bush administration for the rest of their cursed days. Or my demise.

And even then I will never support a member of any party which counts the criminals, who have destroyed our nation's honor, among it's guiding lights. So, you see, the only thing that could possibly shut me up would be a new generation of authentic conservatives who wholly denounce every aspect of their parents miserable reign.

But, I can't imagine that such people would continue the tainted legacy of the GOP by retaining the dishonored name.

How exactly was McCain "doing what was best for his country in Vietnam"? Pretty f'n crystal clear Vietnam was not "the best for our country" Not like crash test dummy TX air national guard would know anyway.

  123. pete Says:

    "Well run convention"? Hahahahahahaha.

They canceled the first day because of a weather forecast, dis-invited the Chimp in Chief and anyone who displayed disloyalty. Then the other half of the Republican elite canceled because of conflicting court dates. Add that to the fact that they chose an unvetted wacko as vp white their candidate is afraid to do interviews.

Then, just to top it off, they devote much of the second/first night to worshiping the dis-invited Chimp and managed to indelibly imprint the fact that McSpin is a Bush clone in the American lexicon.

And all the while, the police have been engaged in preemptive strikes against peaceful protesters and the Press personalities who dare to share their story.

All I can say is that the convention is being run as smoothly as Bushco has run the affairs of state.

  124. Xisithrus Says:

It’s refreshing to see a real convention instead of the orchestrated version of ObamaChrist SuperStar from last week.-Good_Golly

I dont recall Obama saying he talked to God, as George did.

Please stop repeating hypocritical talking points.

  125. pete Says:

Though I must admit I enjoy the increasingly strident cries of the Reichwhiners. Desperation can do that. You see, it's finally starting to dawn on them that they have pissed off about 80% of the planet.

And all he caged votes, and suspect machines, money can buy can't overwhelm the will of the People when you piss them off. Just ask any of the countless tyrants who ended up dancing on a rope.

  126. Xisithrus Says:

The sad fact is they hoped Gustav would be worse than it wad to score political points. Once again fate denied them.

  127. barfly Says:

Sorry to go off-topic, but this is one of the most cynical, blatantly-hypocritical endorsements for McCain so far (from Raw Story:

    Log Cabin Republicans Endorse McCain

Ignoring his calls to pass an anti-gay marriage amendment in his home state and his positions on a number of gay and lesbian issues, the Log Cabin Republicans today endorsed Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for president of the United States.

Issuing a statement from the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis, Log Cabin Republicans president Patrick Sammon that "on the most important issue that LGBT Americans faced in the last decade-the federal marriage amendment-Sen. John McCain stood with us. Now we stand with him."

The organization also praised the Senator's pick of Sarah Palin for Vice President, despite her anti-gay stands on issues such as hate crimes extensions and employment protection. The group said the pick shows McCain is committed to living up to his reputation as a "maverick." [. . .]

Typical republicans. Playing both sides of the street. They endorse McCain, even though he worked against their interests in the past - and when Obama is elected, they'll be right there with their hands out, expecting to be given the same respect as the Stonewall Dems, who are organizing gay voters against McCain.

    Freakin' weasels.

  128. Fred Says:

    Zed Lefflin Says:

Don't ever expect us to go as low as you guys. It doesnt get any lower than what you did to Max Cleland.

  129. barfly Says:

And latest polling has Obama over the 50% mark.

    Sweet.

  130. pete Says:

That's odd Zed. I live in the Twin Cities, and most of the national press is here, so I guess you are telling a bedtime story.

And I can't understand why anyone would be in a hurry to dig up more negatives on Palin. So far she's a joke which tells itself. Though I did read that the McSpin campaign has sent a team to, preemptivly, dig up the dirt on their own. It seems a bit late to start worrying about vetting and damage control now.

Personally, I knew all that I needed to know within the first line of the first story I read about her. Unqualified is unqualified.

  134. Shayne Says:

The white trash in Palin family has left dirt all over Facebook and My Space. Nobody needs to go to Alaska to dig up dirt on Sarah. Miss Barracuda did so much dirt to so many people that they're swarming out of the woodwark to tell all. And the first one to sell the story will be baby daddy Levi's sleazy looking sister who claims to just love Bristol. Flash a $50 and she'll be squealing like a pig. Too funny.

  136. sectionop92 Says:

Glenn Beck is trying to make Sarah Palin into "Sarah plain, tall and the mother America needs" and that McCain's thoughtless vetting process is the internet's fault. All this with a whole two questions to a Huffington Post blogger, with Jonah Goldberg running his finger between his lips once he got the green light.

Ah, the "golly gee" spin machine is a funny thing. I wonder what Beck thinks of "Macho Man" Larry King's newly found punch? He is his idol and all...or was that spin to host his show?

  137. Xisithrus Says:

Sarah plain, tall and the mother America needs”

Sounds like Glenn Beck is pro-nanny state.

    Fact: Obama leads.
    Fact: the lead is increasing.
Fact: McSpin's fall has accelerated since the Palin announcement.
Fact: Most of the Reichwhiners are shocked at the choice.

Conclusion: McSpin's campaign is not being run by geniuses.

  143. pete Says:

That was fun but, it's bedtime.

    G'night good people.
    You too trolls.

  144. Xisithrus Says:

Conclusion: McSpin’s campaign is not being run by geniuses.

McCains campaign is being run by smart people, what they, I think, have failed to realise that non-stop campaigning, in America, works to their disadvantage, rather than to their advantage. Americans, bless their hearts, are bombarded by adertisements, and after a while that advertisement no longer works. Such is the case with political propaganda.

  145. pete Says:

Oh! One last thought. I have noticed that even religious wackos aren't being very vocal in their support for Ms. Palin. Probably cause they "don't cotton to no womens who don't know their place".

    G'night again.

  146. Xisithrus Says:

  148. DallasNE Says:

So much for McCain's pledge to run a dignified campaign. Rove calls Sen. Biden a "big, blowhard doofus".

The most popular sign at the RNC says "America first" and is a direct challenge to Obama's patriotism. Then the crowd breaks out in a chant of "USA, USA" like the Democrats are a foreign nation.

Republicans have no shame. The meanness is overbearing. They certainly don't believe as Obama does that "there is no red America and there is no blue America. There is only the United States of America". An election should be a debate of ideas not brutal character assassination attacks. One cannot lead a nation based solely on fear and intimidation. It takes leadership to bring all of the people along. John McCain should be ashamed.

  149. Gregor Samsa Says:

Wait, torture is out of fashion in the White House again?

Or is torture bad only when the people being tortured is an American soldier, and not a dark-skinned "evildoer"?

And I thought waterboarding wasn't torture?

    Ugh... my head hurts...

  150. Uncle Fester Lurks Says:

  151. Xisithrus Says:

Anyone else notice the media blackout of the Ron Paul convention that was held across the river in Minneapolis on Monday?

    I did.

  152. spencers mom Says:

    OT, but I'm just curious...

How much money do you think the RNC and Team McStain has spent printing up "McCain/Palin" signs, t-shirts, buttons, bumper stickers, etc. already?

Other than the paper signs at the RNC, I'm wondering if anyone, anywhere has seen anything that has Palin's name on it.

And I'm wondering if Arizona Barbie is going to let them paint the name of her husband's "partner and soulmate" on her plane.

    Good times, good times...

    PEACE

  153. Uncle Fester Lurks Says:

Spencers mom, money is not a problem for McCain. Remember the evil Baron Rothschild has helped financed McCain's campaign and I'm sure a lot of that "lost" money in Iraq has helped his campaign also.

  154. Robt Says:

McCain didn't send the MEMO to the President ?

That they all took off their republican hats ?

Ever since you took office Mr president. You have proven you and your party place yourselves, personal profit, and your party's power first and America second. It has only been of what you can gain and not the welfare of the nation and its citizens.

Be the President's disdaining respect for my political party choice in calling me the " angry left ". I need to say, I too served my country.

Sir, Mccain has tried to tell Americans in this campaign that he is bi partisan. Speaking in McCain's behalf with his full prior knowledge. You tell the republican base & supporters to hate me? And other Americans? Hate from the President's mouth to his citizens?

    Thank you and good night.

  155. saywhatyouwill Says:

Of course, when you're somewhere to the right of Genghis Khan, everyone else will appear to be the member of the "angry Left" to you.

Just out of curiosity, didn't McSame give out pertinent info to North Vietnamese? Some much for not breaking the resolve of what's best for country, eh?

  166. georgia Says:

Unfortunately, they did break his resolve:

I held out for four days. Finally, I reached the lowest point of my 5½ years in North Vietnam. I was at the point of suicide, because I saw that I was reaching the end of my rope.

    I said, O.K., I'll write for them.

They took me up into one of the interrogation rooms, and for the next 12 hours we wrote and rewrote. The North Vietnamese interrogator, who was pretty stupid, wrote the final confession, and I signed it. It was in their language, and spoke about black crimes, and other generalities. It was unacceptable to them. But I felt just terrible about it. I kept saying to myself, "Oh, God, I really didn't have any choice." I had learned what we all learned over there: Every man has his breaking point. I had reached mine.
