In a book he co-authored in 2006, Time Magazine’s Mark Halperin — speaking for traditional media — wrote that the Drudge Report “rules our world.” During a media panel hosted by the Politico this afternoon in St. Paul, a questioner asked the reporters what websites they turned to first every morning to get their news. Nearly all the reporters said Drudge still rules their world. Fox News contributor and Fortune Magazine journalist Nina Easton had lavish praise for Drudge:
NINA EASTON: I use Drudge. I think Drudge is really, really useful on keeping up on things. If I have to go on-air in 10 minutes, and I need to make sure I’m not missing something, something didn’t break. I just click on Drudge. I think Drudge has gotten less partisan, or you know, whatever it was at the beginning. I think it really is, if you want to know what’s in the water table of the news, you gotta click on it several times a day.
Watch it:
Only Politico’s Jim Vandehei mentioned a liberal site. “Almost every day, I start by going to Drudge and then Huffington,” he said, to get an idea of “what people are popping on both the left and the right.”
The Beltway ain’t called an echo chamber for nothing.
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:22 pmDrudge is the Mickey Rourke of the bloggasphere, he may not always act bad, but he is always scuzzy.
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:23 pmI think the term that applies is ‘circle jerk’…
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:24 pmWow.
Just…wow…
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:24 pmImus wears a stupid hat as well but I don’t give a shit what he thinks either
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:29 pmWho?
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:35 pmDrudge sure is a ‘non-partisan’ site! Just to the left of RedState, maybe. But then Politico is just to the left of RedState as well.
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:36 pmGeez, they could use a toilet instead…just sayin..
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:52 pmbut, news is news…
why are newspeople looking anywhere but a straight news site?
drudge’s bias might eliminate a relevant story…
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:52 pmoh… well THAT explains a lot…
“… has gotten less partisan, or you know, whatever it was
at the beginning.”
you’re right… you had it… “partisan” works… still.
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:55 pmstrange that… he’s never lied to me…
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:01 pmNo wonder they all sing the same song when they write their columns or go on TV – they are all using the same sources – Republican.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:18 pmZed, can you stick to being a semi-humorous hit-and-run troll?
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:18 pmI have suspected that Olbermann checks out TP during the day.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:18 pmI repeat Lefflin 4 is grossly over rated
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:19 pmPolitico, when it was launched, touted itself as being non-partisan, but it has been very right-wing. Token columnist in Ben Smith, but the headlines, the stories, etc. are all slanted toward the right – they can’t deny it.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:24 pmHarris, Vanderhei, Allen, Simon. These guys claim they are independent – yeah, and I am Wonder Woman.
They are independent in that they are not Hannity, O’Reilly, Hume, Wallace; after them comes the Politico guys.
When Olbermann makes a mistake, he always comes back to correct it. He even made himself worst person once.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:26 pmWhat are you talking about Zed?
Too bad that more journalists don’t look at both the left and the right. That is the only way you can get a complete picture. To say that Drudge isn’t partisan is a joke.
I wonder if it’s already too late to regain our fourth estate and make it somewhat non-partisan. As long as a few corporations own most of our media outlets the news is going to be slanted to the conservative side of the aisle.
BTW, I know there are rich people on the left. Why don’t they buy up Media outlets?
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:31 pmZed Lefflin Says:
katy if you only watch Keith as I do then we would never know if he was lying or not would we….. I dont know but I have been told…..
http://www.olbermannwatch.com/ archives/ 2008/ 01/ new_record_olbe.php
Sending a liberal to olbermannwatch.com is a little like sending a conservative to SweetJesusIhateBillOreilly.com.
A little biased are we Zed.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:34 pmOn the other hand, having a Fortune writer admit she gets her news from Drudge sends a clear signal to all Fortune subscribers that they are wasting their money reading Fortune when they can get Fortune’s sources for free.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:00 pmOften I find I am most interested in the “afterthought” comments that these people make. It seems to me those remarks frequently betray their bias or motivation. For instance:
I just click on Drudge. I think Drudge has gotten less partisan, or you know, whatever it was at the beginning.
What does that mean? Is it that hard to characterize Drudge’s perspective? Why is the second clause necessary? It’s like she realizes she’s not supposed to criticize Drudge as partisan so she attempts to trivialize that comment
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:14 pmI used to go to Drudge first thing after logging on. Alright maybe the NYT, then Drudge. But I haven’t clicked his site for maybe a year now. And I don’t miss it. I do come here to Think Progress.
Remember when no self-respecting journalist would even mention Drudge? Now they’re all over there? It’s like with argot. By the time the petty bourgeois squares from Squaresville start slinging what they believe in cutting edge slang around it’s already passé. So it is with Drudge. I hope he’s saved his money. His heyday (and maybe his payday) isn’t anywhere near over yet, but it may very well be the beginning of the end of Drudgedom.
BTW — Initially I thought just the concept of someone like Drudge making end runs around Big Media a fine thing indeed. Then as time went by it became evident where Drudge was politically. In the same hole as Sweet Annie Coulter. (Where’s she been lately? Has she been hanging out at the RNC? I don’t know. And I don’t really want to know.)
GOP Mess America!
