Maddow on Palin: ‘It is becoming less likely by the hour that she will be McCain’s nominee.’

In an interview with ThinkProgress earlier today in St. Paul, progressive radio (and soon-to-be-TV) host Rachel Maddow called the decision-making process for John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin “shocking.” “Nobody can quite believe that John McCain picked her,” she said, adding, “I think the question right now is whether or not the choice is going to be withdrawn.” The decision to replace her needs to happen “very quickly,” Maddow said, “before it gets very complicated with the rules of the RNC“:

And I think that that’s actually what people are thinking about, rather than what will Sarah Palin mean for the country. I don’t get the sense that anybody is totally committed to the idea that she is going to be vice president, or even the vice presidential nominee.

This has been greeted with such shock — and with every salacious detail about stuff that wasn’t vetted coming to the floor seemingly with each hour of the news cycle — it is becoming less likely by the hour that Palin will still be John McCain’s nominee even by the end of the week.

Watch it:

    – - Well, yeah Rachel. Is there a third option? That’s like saying, “she’ll either stay on the ticket or go.”

The right insight at the right time, Rachel.

I LOVE RACHEL! and i would almost be willing to get gender reassignment to get a date with her. almost.

again, to the chicken-counters, there is a deranged brilliance to picking Palin, which would decrease the chance her name will be withdrawn. besides which, what are people like Graham, etc. going to do when they’ve been putting themselves on the line talking about what a great choice she is?

oh yeah, nothing. i keep forgetting that for a conservative, espousing two mutually exclusive views is only a contradiction if you’re holding them at the same time.

though if you’re a liberal and espouse one view, it’s contradictory by your nature as a liberal.

  4. Above the Clouds says:

This is what happens when a “maverick” lets the media and bloggers vet his cabinet. At least people aren’t talking about all of McCain’s houses.

  5. stjack says:

aside from which, if they were going to throw her under the bus, would they be trying to stall the alaska legislature’s investigation of troopergate?

  6. Daddy-O says:

The question is now, if or when she should withdraw?

No one could have predicted–until McCain introduced her, that is.

I’m giving 30-70, but she’ll have to wait until next Friday night to do it…she can’t do it NOW, right in the middle of the convention.

The longer she waits, though, the slimmer the chances that she will withdraw before the election. We win, either way!

    This election is SO over.

Withdrawing Palin’s candidacy would require at least the tacit admission that the decision was a mistake. As we know Republicans never do that, preferring to sail directly into the iceberg. Let the McTitanic ticket sail on!

However, the Oregon Republican Party is deeply in debt and had to move into offices in a strip mall. Maybe that’s what you were “thinking” about.

But if Palin withdraws due to family circumstances… in the eyes of the GOPers she would still be a saint and they’d think they got out smelling like a rose.

    Exactly…
In a few days she’ll ‘withdraw’ because she can’t stand to see her family ‘ripped apart’ by these vicious liberal ‘blogs and they will look around for a ’savior’ and, finding none, settle for Rudy and do all kinds of commercials about the humble little mayor who saved New York on 9/11 and the jet pilot who saved ‘Merica by single handedly removing the warhead from a North Vietnamese SAM…

  17. hanshiro says:

    Palin is a Half-Baked Alaskan:

Stein says that as mayor, Palin continued to inject religious beliefs into her policy at times. “She asked the library how she could go about banning books,” he says, because some voters thought they had inappropriate language in them. “The librarian was aghast.” That woman, Mary Ellen Baker, couldn’t be reached for comment, but news reports from the time show that Palin had threatened to fire Baker for not giving “full support” to the mayor.

My personal opinion is that if Palklin wanyts to use her daughter as a campaign issue “we are pro-life, we are encouraging our daugter to have the baby etc…” and their son “we are pro-life we had a babay we knew was going to have problems…” then they are fair game in the election. Fair game in that as long as they are used to win votes they can be used to expose bad policy and hypocracy. I don’t think that mean spirited personal attacks like the republicans liked to launch against Chelsea CLinton and Amy Carter are waranted but the kids should reflect the policies of the parents if they are going to be on the campaign trail.

To me this right now smacks of Harriet Meirs remember when she was the best choice Bush could find for the SC, at least until he found the next choice.

  30. BillinChicago says:

So let me see if I understand this correctly:

    1. Bristol Palin is now five months pregnant.
    2. The father has now been identified as Levi Johnston, a young aspiring hockey star.
    3. The two make quite a photogenic couple, and have been identified by locals as high school sweethearts.
    4. Along with announcing the pregnancy, the Palins’ announced that Bristol intends to wed the father. No time frame is given.

So, my question is, what the hell is taking them so long? Pure speculation, sure, but could it be that Levi (self-proclaimed redneck though he is) is holding out for a paternity test? Could there be a role for Maury Povich in the McCain administration?

  31. Jay11 says:

I think the lefty blogs should stay on the “Trig is Bristol’s child” part of this fiasco. That is at the root of the news that Bristol is preggers now. The McCainiacs came right out and said that they were announcing the news of Bristol’s (current) pregnancy to prove that it was Sarah’s child.

Anyone that has followed this story from the start knows for sure that the Palin’s told a HUGE LIE so they wouldn’t look like hypocrites in light of their Dark Ages dogma. How’d that work out for them?

Fred Says: “Will they say it is god’s will when Barrack Obama is elected to be our next president?”

    Fred,

The fools have put themselves between the proverbials. When Obama is elected President they cannot say it is God’s will because God would not select a non-believer and they have proclaimed Obama to be a Muslim. When Obama is elected President, since he is a Muslim according to the Repukes, it must be Allah’s will. That my friend is known as being on the horns of a dilemma: having to make a choice between two equally distasteful selections.

    They must admit they lied and Obama is a man of God after-all;
    or
They must admit that Allah is the true God after-all.

    Damn!!! That hurts so good!!!

Plus the fact that there are successful liberal radio systems being bought out for what? More Christian talk…

Oh, Tim, you should be so proud. Mike Malloy reported receiving death threats for his daughter.

“We get e-mails,” he told RAW STORY. “I’ve turned them over to the FBI. They threatened to kill her, to beat her up, to rape her.” Malloy says he has previously received threats from the religious right, adding that Atlanta police once advised him to get a permit and carry a gun.

Such Christian and family values from those people you hold so dear…

Recently, conservatives have purchased several stations broadcasting Air America broadcasts and changed the programming. In Phoenix and West Virginia, right-wing Christian groups bought out Air America affiliate stations and converted to Christian formats. In Missoula, Montana, a station switched from Air America to music programming “because advertisers were being intimidated by the right wing,” Malloy said.

    There goes your argument, TROLL…

  81. Tim43 says:

Wait, I know why Air America flopped like a dead fish requiring George Soros to write a fat bail-out check…

1990’s – Clinton started cutting welfare forcing people back to work.
2000′w – Bush continued cutting welfare.

That double wammy caused Air America’s customer base to sharply cut their spending habits. They could no longer spend on Liquor, condoms and bail bonds.

Because these welfare recipients lost their cash flow, Air America’s advertisers (Liquor, Condoms and Chico’s Bail Bonds) essentially lost their customer base. Therefore the advertising dollars were scaled back dramatically thus leaving Air America without cash flow and eventually bankrupt.

Not to fear people… Obama will reinstate welfare state on a grand scale. Liquor, Condoms and Bail Bonds will once again be in great demand. Advertising dollars will flow back into Air America to reach the customer base.

    Life will be good.

she may look out of place or unqualified to us, but to the fundamentalist rightwing christianist base (the GOP that votes) she talks their talk and walls their walk…. being a mother who doesn’t believe in birth control DOES qualify her from their POV, because she is a “believer”.
we will make a fatal mistake if we dismiss her out of hand or make fun of her family. in my part of the country, there are thousands of people like Palin, and they were hesitating over whether or not to vote for McSame.
    now they have a reason.
scary, i know, but it is the reality we have to deal with.

  90. ucsbclassics53 says:

I concur, 91. The Religious Right’s tendency to forgive and forget the so-called “moral failings” of their darlings in Washington coupled with their equal tendency to always condemn those that belong to their political opponents are too great to ignore.

  91. Fred says:

    Tim43 Says:

Tim’s just doing what he thinks is right, obediently repeating the things he has been told are true.

If he had a thought of his own it wouldn’t have sounded anything like the post above.

I just hope he does the right thing and never accepts any social security benifits.

  92. pete says:

It appears as though the “vetting” ceased as soon as it was established Ms. Palin doesn’t have worms or mange.

And I don’t think she will gain a single voter outside the doomed 20%ers who managed to outnumber a complacent majority and give us Bushco.

Will she bring back a few psychochristians who were considering voting for Barr, or staying home, because McSpin isn’t delusional enough? Perhaps. But the moderate majority, far from being complacent, are mad as Hell. And the “True Christian” idiots simply don’t have the numbers this time around.

  93. Tim43 says:

    Shayne Says:
    ——————————————————————————–

Hey Timmy. Rachel Maddow just got an hour long show on MSNBC. I guess she replaces the spot left when Tucker Carlson got fired.

What left wing liberal couldn’t get a job at Obama’s primary network, MSNBC? MSNBC’s ratings are in the tank … just like Air America. Soon George Soros will need to them out as well.

So, Rachel Maddow will be present when another left wing liberal media station dies a long slow painful death.

    MSNBC…

    More
    Snot
    Nosed
    Bull
    Crap

  94. Fred says:

    Tim43
    Truly ignorant moron

    hey that’s fun!

  95. dbadass says:

That shit about snot nosed bull crap seems to exist somewhere between absurd and just plan zany. Are there still stores which sell Wranglers?

  96. Fred says:

    dbadass Says:

Tim sounds like he is from my neck of the woods. He is proud to call himself a redneck and doesn’t understand why people think it is odd.

  97. pbg says:

The Obama campaign has been very wisely focusing on McCain’s bad judgement rather than Sarah’s failings, which means that even if she withdraws they can still use the episode as a prime example of McCain screwing up.
This is the Perot meltdown whether she stays or goes.

  98. Tim43 says:

    Fred Says:
    ——————————————————————————–

I just hope he does the right thing and never accepts any social security benifits.

Yeah, like there will be anything left in Social Security after Obama and the baby boomers get through with it. And, as long as democrats like Biden and Kennedy, vote to give illegal immigrants our social security benefits I don’t expect anything to be left when I get there.

401k’s, IRA’s and other investments are the only hope that us gen-X’ers have for a good retirement after Obama and the baby boomers get a hold of social security.

Just imagine the hand outs that Obama has in store for you folks. Fairly certain that he will open up the coffers to everyone regardless of whether they paid into the system and actually earned it.

  99. Shayne says:

Look at Timmy the Fox Snooze guy making fun of MSNBC. Got irony, loser?

  100. Fred says:

    Tim43 Says

It’ll be fine if we can keep the gop’s sticky fingers out of it but it’s not for you, right, I mean you don’t believe in that shit, right?

  101. Tim43 says:

    pbg Says:

    Sarah’s meltdowns?

I guess you folks would call her a brave hero if she advised her daughter to get an abortion, right?

You’d probably think highly of her if she aborted her disabled child when she found out the baby had downsyndrome, right?

Palin is everything that the femenists want a woman to be. She is a mother and a career woman who sets her goals high. She has juggled being a PTA mom, Mayor, Governor, mother, wife all while staying involved in her community. Palin has demonstrated that she does not take crap from either side of the aisle, republican or democrat.

Yet, because she is not a left wing liberal, you folks discount her.

    Go figure.

I guess that if she got abortions, divorced her husband and turned democrat you would hold her in high esteem.

  102. Tim43 says:

    By the way…

This Maddow woman is about as f-ugly as they get. Why are there no hot liberal women? What is with the short hair?

  103. Fred says:

    Tim43 Says:

She has bad judgment. She chose not to educate or in any way prepare her daughter on how to avoid getting pregnant. Guess what?

People who push abstinance are really very naive. Not a good quality for leadership of a nation the size of the US.

  104. Fred says:

    Tim43 Says:
Why are there no hot liberal women?

Guess you haven’t see Mr. Obama’s wife, huh?
Guess you haven’t seen Chelsea Clinton huh?

I’m not going any further and listing any of the multitude of plastic and just plain homely republican women just to play your childish game.

Did you see all those old white women at the rep convention? I’ve never seen so many old white people in one place before. Republicans got old didn’t they?

  105. pete says:

No stupid trolls. Ms Palin is unqualified because she is a religious nut who, apparently, gives more than a passing thought to having her home state secede from the union and has demonstrated a consistent contempt for logic and science.

She’s a gobsmacked Crusader and we don’t need her within 1,000 miles of the chain of command.

  106. Shayne says:

I don’t know Timmy but the Republicans that know Sarah best all say she’s a back-stabbing barracuda, in short, typical Republican politician.

  107. Shayne says:

Sure Timmy and Cindy McCain looks like a 60 year old Barbie Doll and just as plastic. I think she had one too many tucks and she really isn’t a fish eyed evil witch, she just can’t move her face.

  108. jkd7854 says:

    Go Rachel:

As usual, Rachel Maddow makes the most sense. If John McCain doesn’t pick a replacement Vice President soon, he’s in trouble. Republicans should listen to her, but they won’t because they want to lose to all those “angry left” voters who will show up in droves to vote for Obama and against Bush III.

  109. jkd7854 says:

I can’t believe I have to explain to Tim43 about Rachel Maddow.
First thing, dude, she is ugly because she is being interviewed off camera. Haven’t you seen her all done up for Countdown. She is actually quite hot, even without a lot of makeup.

Second thing: If you haven’t figured out the short hair thing, I’m not going to try to explain it. Hmm..let’s see, a very intelligent woman Rhodes scholar with an adams apple who has stated that she is for Equal Rights regardless of sexual preference. Well…have you got it, yet?

  110. ChrisSEA says:

    “ACME_Democrat Says:
    ——————————————————————————–

Only the bleeding hearts would care what the bull dike Maddow says”

You know, Jesus was one of those ‘bleeding hearts’ types. All those poor people Jesus thought so little of… He didn’t have the sermon on the mount to tell them to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and stop whining.

It’s amazing to me how un-Christ-like so many conservatives are.

  111. jkd7854 says:

Even though Tim the Fixed News guy has left the room, I still have to call him on his blind acceptance of Palin. It’s not just her views on abortion that are scary. Or do you know that she has the same lobbyist as Jack Abramoff. She wants to drill, drill, drill. I guess her folks just love that Moose chili and if they continue and she becomes VP, Moose will be on the extinction list, no doubt. Then her parents will be eating endangered species moose chili. What’s next, “Bison Stew”?

  112. jkd7854 says:

It’s interesting how we have a man running for president who is half one color and half the other. We have plenty of people running for office or who are in responsible positions because of their principles, NOT their personal choices of life styles or what race they were born as.

Oh, the time’s they are a’changing….

  113. ChrisSEA says:

    “Tim43 Says:
By the way… This Maddow woman is about as f-ugly as they get.”

I’m going to guess by Tim43’s online demeanor he’s a conservative who goes to a Christian church and learns all about Jesus, judging by how Christlike he comes across…

    NOT.

  114. jkd7854 says:

Our friend, Tim is not as turned off by Rachel’s appearance as he is threatened by a female with brains and principles. That’s what’s f****ing ugly to him.

  115. ucsbclassics53 says:

Perhaps he sees himself as inadequate when compared to her…it would make a lot of sense…

  116. saywhatyouwill says:

I guess he appointed her in a McZheimer moment.

MSNBC is a right-whining station? Wow! I wasn’t aware of that!

McIIIrd won’t boot Palin – doing so would make him look weak. And we all know that mavericks can never look weak – wrong, inept and unprincipled, but never weak.

  120. daveincolorado says:

No no no – keep her on the ticket!!! I want to see the debate with Joe Biden! That will be a hoot!

  121. colinjames says:

    Few things:

    1) Rachel Maddow is brilliant, talented, and beautiful. On video cam w/ no makeup, I’ve seen supermodels look not-so-hot. But it doesn’t MATTER! She’s ten-times more beautiful on the inside, which is what counts to me.

2)I agree w/ whoever said repub’s- who like to play the part of the church-going christian- act in direct opposition to the teachings of Jesus Christ through their opinions, statements, actions, and attitudes in general. It’s but one of many conservative hypocrisies. Many, many, many, so many it’d take weeks to sort it out.

    3) Tim43, man you are an ugly, ugly soul. Why spend your day spreading lies, rabble-rousing, launching personal attacks on fine people, and displaying your hatred of all things not-GOP-endorsed… I feel sorry for you. You got it ALL wrong in this life. I hope you’re getting paid, at least that would make sense.

    4) Sarah Palin is an awful pick for VP. I don’t yet know enough about her to criticize her personally, in detail, but this whole thing about the fired trooper stinks to high heaven, seems like abuse of power runs in the party. Not that a dem has never done something like that. That’s politics, and it sucks. But the GOP takes the cake in the abuse-of-power department.

  122. escapefrombushistan says:

They ALL lost my vote when they met with AIPAC.

  123. Tim43 says:

    Seriously,

Here are the things that Palin needs to do before she can woo any disenchanted hillary supporters

Got her hair cut in the shape of a mullet
Put on her best hilliary pantsuit
    Divorce her husband
    Move to San Francisco
Counsel her daughter to get an abortion
    Burn a flag
Meet with William Ayers (Obama’s terrorist friend)
Attend a racist church (Only black separatist like Obama’s)
Promise to tax those big evil oil companies

If Palin does these things, she can win over the democrats who have not been brainwashed by Obama. Those disenchanged Hillary supporters that see through Obama’s smokescreen of good speaches.

    yeah, colin…

Spreading lies??? Why doesn’t TP talk about all of Obama’s hidden little secrets?

You folks are more concerned with the pregnancy of Sarah Palin’s daugher than you are with Obama’s use of cocain 20 years ago. Or his attendance of a racist church for 20 years. Or his affiliation with a domestic terrorist.

Palin is an excellent pick. It is too bad all you see is what the left wing kooks on media matters and boards like this want you to see. While simultaneously sweeping Obama’s shortcomings under the rug.

My suggestion to you… If you want a fair and balanced understanding of our candidates, you need to go outside of TP, Media Matters and MSNBC.

  125. colinjames says:

“fair and Balanced” is what I’m all about, you don’t have any idea where I get my info, but I’ll tell ya- 1) Progressive Sites, usually Buzzflash, which has all the great links to stories from every kind of news org. I don’t visit Media Matters often, and TPM rarely; I read foreign papers, and domestic, watch cable news, broadcast news, read books, even watch Fox- til I need to throw up. But hey, I try! I even go to right wing sites, but since they censor comments from progressives- no matter how polite and tame- as long as the comment contains the actual truth, which scares the hellout of conservatives- they won’t publish it. That’s our Freedom-Lovin’ Right-Wing for ya! TrollboyTim, you’re snide, condescending, rude, mmand under-informed. You don’t get it. You’re just her to ruin people’s day or something, can’t you find a better use of your time at a place where your wanted? Go volunteer down at your local church. Plant a tree. Spread positivity instead of slander and lies. Really. Good luck. Aloha nui Loa motherf*%#r.
