Conservatives unconcerned about Palin and McCain’s ‘cognitive dissonance’ on climate change.»

During a Politico panel discussion this morning on the “Risks and Rewards” of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, ThinkProgress asked the panelists if there was “cognitive dissonance” between McCain’s belief in global warming and Palin’s denial that it’s “man-made.” Neither Rep. Candice Miller (R-MI) nor Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) thought it was an issue, instead choosing to talk about Palin and McCain’s agreement on drilling. “I think most people generally agree that climate change is happening,” said Miller. “There’s probably more of the the nuance of how much of it — how much is the human race is responsible.” Watch it:

Yesterday, former New York governor George Pataki said that he was “not concerned” about Palin’s skepticism because she is an “energy expert.” He also chose to talk more about drilling instead of climate change when asked about McCain and Palin’s differences.

Transcript:

CORLEY: My name is Matt Corley, I’m also from the Center for American Progress. Sen. McCain has made one of the central parts of his campaign and his political persona that he believes that climate change is real and that it has to be addressed and I’m curious if you think that there is a cognitive dissonance between his position and Gov. Palin’s position on climate change. She’s said she’s not sure that its man-made and I’m curious how you think that would work out between them as a governing coalition and just how the issue would place between them having such a divide between them.

REP. CANDICE MILLER (R-MI): I think in regards to climate change. I think most people generally agree that climate change is happening. There’s probably more of the the nuance of how much of it — how much is the human race is responsible. There’s clearly something happening with the weather patterns, etc. I do think its of note, that Sen. McCain because of energy prices has changed his stance on the Outer Continental Shelf, I think that is to his advantage. In fact, talking about Colorado, that’s what’s happened with the Senate races there, which was about a 12 point spread and its now even up just because of the energy issue. Because Udall has been opposed to drilling.

REP. KEVIN MCCARTHY (R-CA): So I’m hoping that Sarah Palin can recommend to the senator, get him to change his mind if it’s possible about drilling in the ANWR. Quite frankly I think we’re crazy not to be advantaging ourselves of our own domestic energy supplies. But I think on the climate change issue I think McCain’s — the things that he’s said and his record on that has been very good. I don’t think environmentalists should be afraid of a McCain presidency. On the other hand I think you will find that his standard will be reasonable which is really where most people are at.

And if your question is how do you have a VP and a presidential candidate who has differences. I mean you’ve got Biden who’s said he would have been glad to run with McCain and that Barack Obama is inexperienced. So, I mean you’re going to have the differences as you go forward, and the one thing I see that Candice has been talking about. John McCain has been very open about where the world is today and where do you have to go forward.

And the way to slow that process is by drilling for oil ?

Or does the fact that she governs a state where oil is being drilled make her an expert — sort of like having Russia just across the Bering Strait makes her a foreign policy expert?

First Maria Bartiromo, now George Pataki. What “energy expert” claims the Exxon Valdez spilled “11,000 gallons of fuel”?

Only an Exxon shill would leave out those 10.8 million gallons of crude oil that fouled 11,000 square miles of ocean. Palin’s fishy, to say the least

Add this one to the list of the many things over which cognitive dissonance is not an issue for conservatives.

Otherwise their heads would explode, trying to conciliate their literal belief in the Bible with the world we actually live in.

For evidence, read the post by the troll who dismisses a scientific theory as being “just a theory”. These people are ignorant and proud of it, as someone more famous than me put it.

    ACME_FASCIST,

We don’t need to prove your hypothesis.

It is quite an intellectually dishonest claim to assert a hypothesis and then make people prove you right and when they can’t because your claim is a dishonest one, AT BEST, you chide them for not proving your claim in the first place.

Sort of like how Bush claimed Iraq had WMD’s and that Saddam needed to PROVE that there were WMD’s ready and waiting and since Saddam failed to prove Bush’s WMD claim, that justified Bush’s illegal aggression.

    It’s called a triple negative…

It’s a “Have YOU stopped beating your wife,” argument.
You made it… NOW PROVE IT!

  24. Gregor Samsa Says:

[…]former New York governor George Pataki said that he was “not concerned” about Palin’s skepticism because she is an “energy expert.”

Well, obviously. If she has experience in foreign policy because Alaska and Russia are in the same general area, it follows she should be an energy expert because she lives a few hundred miles away from oil fields.

Which would also make anyone living in a border state an expert on immigration issues. These people apparently have no idea how idiotic they sound. Duh.

  25. mary Says:

said Miller. “There’s probably more of the the nuance of how much of it — how much is the human race is responsible.”

I want to see an ad put out in which shots of traffic jams and spewing smokestacks get interspersed with Miller’s quote (awful english and all)! Throw in a shot of some airline jets powering up and then some steam coming out of some nuclear power plants interspersed with shots of melting glaciers!

But, what’s this about ACME being his wife?

  26. Max-1 Says:

ACME opens mouth and removed all doubt on “cognitive dissonance”.

  27. Bobwurst Says:

mccain/Palin don’t have cognitive dissonance, they aren’t capable of cognition. mccain just says whatever pops into his head without thinking, and palin assumes that whatever she wants is what god wants, so why think about that?

  28. Doc Rock Says:

I’m sure the Repugs are no more concerned about a “cognitive dissonance” between McBush and Palin than they would be about one between McBush and a vase of flowers on his desk.

  29. Fred Says:

Here’s why they don’t care, they have already lost and they know it. This poll shows Obama 68.5/ mccain 31.5 win percentage.

It also shows Obama with 303.9 electoral votes and mccain with 234.1

popular vote is closer but with Obama still ahead.

These are at least closer to what is really going on.

I am just using the same level of intellect… NO?

    _____________________________________________________

There is plenty of evidence, including many peer-reviewed studies, accepted by the scientific community — all pointing to the conclusion that global warming exists, and it’s a man-made condition. I could regale you with links, but it’s obvious nothing will change your mind.

There are still people on this planet who believe there is no “concrete evidence” that our planet is round, and there are probably still people working for the tobacco companies who believe that nicotine is not addictive and smoking cigarettes is not harmful to one’s health. But that doesn’t disprove what the rest of us take to be common knowledge. It also doesn’t mean there is any valid debate remaining on these issues. And so it is for global warming.

Oh, one more thing — you will look less ignorant if you use the words “hypothesis” and “hypotheses” correctly. The former is singular; the latter is plural.

Did anyone notice the North Pole is now an island? Supposedly so for the first time in history. Also, a few years ago enough permafrost melted off of Iceland, and it was discovered Iceland is actually made up of three seperate islands, not one continual land mass.
How much of this is from global warming? Since I’m fairly intelligent, I’d say all of it. If I were Republican, first I’d deny climate change, then I’d say we had nothing to do with it.
The Republican party has it’s collective heads in the sand. This issue not only affects the U.S. but the entire human race.

  36. Bobwurst Says:

    mary Says:
But, what’s this about ACME being his wife?

Well, it’s kind of complicated. Technically it’s a common law marriage. ACME has a split personality, and since he’s from West Virgina, and the two personalities have lived in his head since he was 14, they’re technically married. Please don’t ask about their honeymoon, it involves a lot of vasoline, and a goat…If more personalites emerge ACME will be moving to southern Utah. If you’re unsure about what that, wait a few minutes, some numbnut keeps posting off topic about a documentary about poligamy and john mccain…

  37. Shayne Says:

100 years ago scientist hypothesized that global warming would occur due to carbon omissions. Data was collected and the research confirmed the hypothesis and that’s how you end up with a theory. If one of the criteria proved false the theory wouldn’t stand. Acme Idiot. What proof do you have other than the lies paid for by the fossil fuel industry? None. Aren’y you worried you’ll fall off the edge of the flat earth you live on.

  38. Bob Says:

She’s an expert on drilling. I’ll give her that. What beauty queen (or runner-up) isn’t?

As far as oil drilling goes, what percentage of Alaskan oil is heavy oil, and how does that affect the projected production? What levels of sulphur content can be expected at various depths and what effect does that have on equipment and transportation? How would drillig and subsequent production be affected by rivers and lakes that no longer freeze solid or year-round, due to global warming?

These are easy, ‘non-technical’ questions that I would think an Alaskan would know, nevermind being an expert. I’m waiting for an intelligent address to these questions, but I’m not holding my breath.

    _______

You’re right. It’s a theory based on reams of solid evidence that a consensus of scientists has deemed valid with a 95% degree of confidence.

Know what else is a hypothesis? Gravity.

Scientists don’t know if it’s a particle or a force or a quantum unit. Since there’s no consensus on the nature of gravity and further research is needed, I strongly suggest you superglue yourself to the floor, just in case gravity stops working.

When did they discover what dark matter is? And in what book did you find without a doubt how the universe was formed?

    September 2nd, 2008 at 2:38 pm

Background radiation detected by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe provides some extremely conclusive evidence that the Big Bang theory is correct, and that the universe we know came into existence from a singularity that occurred 13.7 billion years ago. We also know based on other evidence that our Sun and its eight planets formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago from a protoplanetary disk, and that the earliest forms of life began on this planet at least 3 billion years ago.

There is abolutely zero scientific evidence to indicate that the Earth and Universe formed over a period of six days some 6,000 years ago. Thus, Creationism has no place in science class.
