Tonight in his address to the Republican National Convention, Giuliani criticized Democrats for refusing to use the term “Islamic terrorism”:
GIULIANI: For four days in Denver, the Democrats were afraid to use the term “Islamic terrorism.” I imagine they believe it is politically incorrect to say it. I think they believe they will insult someone. Please tell me, who they are insulting if they say, “Islamic terrorism.” They are insulting terrorists!
Not surprisingly, Giuliani also said he wanted Democrats to invoke the 9/11 terrorist attacks more often. Watch it:
Experts, including those in the Bush administration, disagree. The issue goes beyond just “insulting” someone. Such religious rhetoric is actually counterproductive in combating terrorism:
– Department of Homeland Security: U.S. officials may be “unintentionally portraying terrorists, who lack moral and religious legitimacy, as brave fighters, legitimate soldiers or spokesmen for ordinary Muslims.”
– National Counter Terrorism Center: “Avoid labeling everything ‘Muslim.’ It reinforces the ‘U.S. vs. Islam’ framework that Al-Qaeda promotes. Be specific (Egyptian, Pakistani) and descriptive (South Asian youth, Arab opinion leaders), where possible.”
– Ret. Gen. John Abizaid: “I mean, even adding the word Islamic extremism, or qualifying it to Sunni Islamic extremism, or qualifying it further to Sunni Islamic extermism as exemplified by government such as Bin Laden, all make it very, very difficult [to fight terrorism] because the battle of words is meaningful, especially in the Middle East to people.”
– Islamic Society of North America: “If it’s not our intent to paint everyone with the same brush, then certainly we should think seriously about just characterizing them as criminals, because that is what they are.”
Railing against “Islamic” extremists and terrorists is one of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) favorite talking points as well. “Senator McCain refers to it that way because that is what it is,” campaign adviser Steve Schmidt said in April, defending the rhetoric.
It's settled...she can read!
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:08 pmI notice they don't refer to say the IRA as "Christian" terrorists, or the Bast separatists as such either. I guess the sub text is be afraid of brown people and vote republican.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:11 pmWere the low expectations set for her even met? I thought McCain was in New Orleans holding the waters back by jamming his finger into the dike?
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:11 pmGooliani not afraid to insult anybody he can bully. Somebody ought to take a broomstick to him.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:11 pmNo, we just aren't trying to stereotype innocent Arabs, Muslims and other followers of Islam as "lunatic terrorists".
Then again, the Republicans like terrorizing abroad and at home.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:11 pmBtw, could the Palin family feature their children a little MORE before the cameras?? Christ, either your family is off limits or they aren't, and when you promote them shamelessly, all bets are off.

You know republicans aren't serious about fighting terror! They need terror, how else would they perpetuate an ongoing war to fuel the industrial military sector?
Giuliani is an ass. (But we know that...)

September 3rd, 2008 at 11:12 pmI like Palin's use of all the regurgitated republican'ts talking points.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:13 pmGiuliani: By Refusing To Use The Term ‘Islamic Terrorism, Liberals Are Trying To Avoid Insulting Terrorists.
Rudy, you forgot to put on your dress.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:15 pmWe know she can regurgitate and breed. I guess that's good enough for the GOP.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:15 pmWhen are the Republicans going to lay out...you know...their plans for what they'll do for their four years in office? Or are the talking points all I'm getting? I'm confused...I thought these were agents of "change".

They're brownish, have a misunderstood faith and sit on top of a lot of oil. Plus they made Rudy a made man, then he failed on his own after that. So, yeah...by hating them and wanting them dead, he looks cool to his GOP friends.

September 3rd, 2008 at 11:35 pmI posted this on the other thread, but it belongs here, too:
Oh, Rudy is being interviewed, and whether he realizes or not, he’s just slamming McCain time and again!
He said that Palin’s executive experience trumps the other ticket, and frankly makes up for Johh’s shortcoming, too. He also said that she has great domestic policy, and she’ll learn foreign policy and John will, too.
Josh Marshall over at TPM says that Rudy ran way over his time slot, so they didn’t have time to run Sarah’s bio. I think that by morning, the McStain campaign will realize that putting Rudy on teevee was a b-a-d choice.
Again, did anyone else notice that Palin, in saying at the end of her speech, “Join our cause, and help elect a great man as the next president of the United States” that she failed to mention McStain’s name???
PEACE

One could technically call the Bush Administration, "Christian Terrorists". History shows that The Inquisition, Communist Witch Hunts, Indian Christians, Abortion center bombers, The Crusades, and of course Hitler, used "God" to cause destruction. The current "creationism" argument is another chapter of crazed religious fanatics "War on Science". I have an idea...Why not divert that money spent on idiotic religions on life extension, disease curing, Space travel, intelligence increase, and solving the real problems of life.

September 3rd, 2008 at 11:48 pmNo leadership qualities in Palin's speech... but she is good at being divisive, arrogant and conniving. And the audience... what a bunch of unruly heathens.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:50 pmOkay. I thought that we were in a war on "Terrorism", not just one specific kind. Does that mean they won't go after anyone who bombs an abortion clinic? That's a religious terrorism of a different kind, I guess.
I live in NY. To many people around the country, Rudy Giuliani's finest hour was on Sept 11th. As much as I dislike him, I have to agree that his words during the days after the attacks did help unite and console a grieving city (and state, as many of us live near there and are very fond of The City). David Letterman returned to late night TV because the Mayor asked everyone to return to work, and try to start rebuilding their lives. His calls for volunteers brought thousands from around the country to help in the rescue and recovery operations. Few politicians in our nation's history have shined as brightly as Rudy did seven years ago. So it's no wonder he constantly brings it up. He wants you to remember how wonderful he is based solely on 9/11. Rudy has always been about himself. Please keep that in mind when you hear him speak. With that cute little lisp he has. Ha-ha.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:54 pmThe MSNBC gang is damning Palin with very faint praise. I think they can't put to words how nothing this speech really was.
September 3rd, 2008 at 11:56 pmFrankly I don't understand how executive experience in Alaska translates to executive experience in DC. Wouldn't people in the senate almost automatically have more experience with laws and such that affect the country?

September 4th, 2008 at 12:07 amThey speak to the freebasers the same rhetoric. I missed half of her speech and it must have been the half that she gave specifics of anything because all I heard were unsubstantiated platitudes. The attacks on Obama seemed to be mocking the idea of directly helping people you don't know. There was one apparent punch that I had no idea what it was about but it seemed to be a great line for the audience. How will all this win over moderates or anything outside that core? What I've seen of this week's convention hasn't been any reaching over. It sure doesn't look as exciting as last week no matter what any of the talking heads say.

Most women in "CONUS" (the Lower 48 Continental United States), being more educated and/or sophisticated prefer to use their husband, significant other, or a vibrator. However, given the sexual history of that family that may very well be one hell of a thumb. A bit perverse but all Repukes are a bit off!

September 4th, 2008 at 12:28 amJust wondering: If McPOW is such an obvious all-American choice for Pres, why did the GOP need to spend all night belittling Obama? And why insult community organizers as such? Palin said that they have no real responsibilities. OMG ... Has she ever been to the inner-city in Chicago, Philly, LA? Disgusting stuff, man.
September 4th, 2008 at 12:32 amFirst when you label the terrorist as, brown, you are dividing. It's important to end all the hate, harm and begin to move on to much brighter things. Lets talk about the hunger, the water shortage, the homeless, the sick, people with no health care coverage, 2012, forclosures, unemployment, education, crime, firearms taking innocent lives... Lets talk about higher wages, insurance companies not honoring the insured, I can go on.... May the best for the country win the election, if the may be orange, pink, one leg longer than the other, near sided, fat or small. This country is too much hung up on issues that do not relate to common sense! If the woman governor has children, fine, don't hold that against her. If the black presidential candidate is making history by his color, so! They are all human, and if they weren't qualified to be in their positions, I'm sure they would not of make it to where they are right now....

I believe that is a very fair question that the media should be asking. Why don't they bring on their network "medical experts" to tell us just how feasible her story is? Because frankly, I just don't buy it. And in what way would that birth story not be considered "child endangerment"?
Is a pregnant woman who gets locked up for smoking crack really any worse than a mother of four in her mid-forties who, about to give birth to a baby that she already knows will have special needs but instead stays to give a half-hour speech, gets on an eight-hour-plus plane trip (without telling the flight crew that she's pregnant and that her water has already broken more than a half hour before) to land and then go past two hospitals specializing in neo-natal care to give birth in a clinic in the middle of nowhere? Just asking.

She delivered 90 minutes later. I was still in the Doc's office signing insurance forms. Easiest birth I ever experienced!

Palin doesn’t have that whatsoever. I think she’s going to find the rest of the country isn’t just like Alaska.
It's all they have for Palin. It's really funny how last week qualifying as commander in chief was what was necessary to be President. Today it's having executive experience. But, they have a really big problem with that argument. If that argument is true, that makes Palin more qualified to be President than McBush, because he has zero executive experience. Why doesn't some enterprising journalist ask why it is necessary for Obama to have "executive" experience but not for McBush.
Besides, her "executive" experience as mayor was practically nothing. I read today that she hired an Administrator to run the towns business. She was too busy schmoozing with lobbyists to try to get money for her town. She was pretty successful at it. But she still left a town that had zero debt when she took office, 22 million in debt when she left. Think about that. A 22 million dollar debt for a town of 6,000 people. That's scary.

The, newly re-energized, "Religious" Right will shatter.
If that particular 20% becomes several 5%-8%, we can fix this mess far quicker than one may think. Keep it coming Ms. Palin. You may end up saving this nation a whole bunch of grief.
PS. Can any sane person really believe that this self-effacing piece of fluff will attract "Hillary supporters".

Glenn Beck and all the other neocon "pundits" wanted the MSM to take the Enquirer's "evidence" and run with it to damn Edwards to hell and back. Now, just wait for the cases of whiplash to start to pile up in 3, 2,...
But who am I kidding, they'll claim the Enquirer is now a part of the MSM and is out to destroy Palin, because that's how it is when an Alaskan Gubner "shakes things up" with the Washington "elite". Because all of us bloggers are "liars and crooks", we all swarmed over Alaska for the last three years living in the trees and wilderness because we knew Palin would be VP and we sat on our diamond mine of "lies and damn lies" and simply because John McCain is as bright as a light bulb painted black all over.
September 4th, 2008 at 2:08 am#69 - Sure did.
That is because what the North Vietnamese did to John McCain was highly similar to what we did at Gitmo and elsewhere. Bush steadfastly said that we don't torture. Therefore Republicans have to use weasle words like “torturous experiences”. She did not write that part of the speech.

September 4th, 2008 at 5:52 amI didn't listen to Giuliani's statement but if it is like his many frequent rants, and the summary provided, it is very sad and also predictable from someone like him. I have worked in Muslim countries for nearly 30 years on economic and environmental development projects and this pigeonhole-ing of Muslims as jihadists is ludicrous and also very insulting. I'm a Roman Catholic by upbringing but have never had any problems working with Muslims in various countries. In fact, Muslimns have a rich culture (or at least some of them do). Let's dialogue. Ossama bin Laden and al-Quaida are the fringe, not even remotely connected to the mainstream of the Muslim world except as a distraction or impediment.

I believe that McCain must make seemingly well intentioned promises, but in the end he will take that wrong-head lead of George Bush and build upon them.
We cannot afford any more of the kind of leadership the GOP has provided.

September 4th, 2008 at 7:49 amWell, as Ronald Reagan would say - "there you go again" Colonel Klink Rudy invoking 9/11 all the while making millions $$$ off those who were attacked by bottercutter-wielding attackers...if only now we could invade Iraq which HAD NOTHING TO DO with 9/11....hmmmmmm, now Rudy why don't ya see if dubya will loan ya the bullhorn it makes quite an effective soundbite prop. Of course if for nothing else, it would make a great souvenir.
September 4th, 2008 at 8:03 amGiuliani - what a joke.
So by that logic, being a terrorist is ok... it's being Islamic that makes it insulting.
If we put the term "Christian Terrorists" on the table, which group of people would be insulted? Terrorists? or Christians?
Fear and Hate: The Republican Platform
September 4th, 2008 at 8:06 amDoin't call rudi a moron, it's insulting to morons.
September 4th, 2008 at 8:44 amI couldn't bring myself to watch one second of the bulls$#% thrown last night, but already from my reading, I can see that they will stop at nothing to discredit the Dems and smear them anyway possible. It appears to me that the Repugs, at least the ones that can't think for themselves, are falling for this crap, hook, line and sinker. In my brief switch onto MSNBC last night...I saw one woman say how "proud" she was to be a woman!!!!If THAT isn't the apitomy of stupid, I don't know what is!! It's like a friggin' cult..they brainwash you, then when you finally realize what's happened to you, it's too late! I saw someone last night say that McCain already has 85% of his base sown up...that this was talking to the Independents..please hope THEY have a brain! The moral of the story is...I can't DO one more second of this country being this way..we can do so much better. So for all the chatting we do here amongst ourselves, and I really do enjoy reading this and conversing wirh people that are like minded,PLEASE do something (if you're not already)to support our cause. It's not good enough to just complain and say how hosed this whole thing is.I surely don't mean to insult anyone on here...maybe all of us ARE sending $$$ and registering voters and getting the message out to take our country back...I have no way of knowing.I just don't want to be disappointed again. I'm sick of the lies, sick of our standing in the world, sick of the ideals and I will do everything in my power to make sure that these Bastards aren't sitting there with the trigger in their hands....cause I'm really afraid for us if that happens. Sorry. Had to vent. Peace
September 4th, 2008 at 8:51 amMiatch...THAT'S what I'm talking about!
September 4th, 2008 at 8:55 amLet's face it, Giuliani was brilliant. If you believe Americans are ignorant irrational brutes, then his speech, and Palin's too, makes perfect sense. You don't feed rabid dogs truffles.
September 4th, 2008 at 9:04 amJust goes to show you that cross-dressing does not necessarily make you smarter...Rudy should climb back in the slime bucket he crawled out of with Rove's help and take his nouns and verbs with him...This man will always be a loser...
September 4th, 2008 at 9:29 amGiuliani: By Refusing To Use The Term ‘Islamic Terrorism,’ Liberals Are Trying Not To Insult Terrorists
... because everyone knows that all "Islamists" are in fact Terra-ists and just waiting underneath your bed for you to go to sleep so they can creeeeeeeeeeep out and slit your throat. Since they are one and the same, pointing this out causes no harm at all and just restates the obvious to those that need the obvious endlessly repeated to them lest they forget....
Cheers,

Nope. It's one of the more idiotic terms produced by the radical right.
September 4th, 2008 at 10:12 amBy insisting on using the term "Islamic terrorism", the GOP is insulting every Muslim all across the world by association their religion with the violent, extreme acts of a small group of people. It would be like judging all Christians based on the actions of the "Army of God" or "Focus on the Family", or some other "Christian" hate group.
Terrorism is a TACTIC. It has been used by many groups throughout history. Some of those groups have been Muslim, some have been Jewish, some have been Christian, etc. It is a gross oversimplification to associate this tactic with one particular religious group. Also, by associating Islam with terrorism - and acting as if the religion itself is the source of that terrorism - we are alienating the very people we need as allies in fighting against the extremists within the Muslim world.
A real leader would know that. You know, someone like Barack Obama.
September 4th, 2008 at 10:22 amDid the people in the convention center have buttons that said something like, "Cool State,Hot VP" Sexism anyone??
September 4th, 2008 at 10:45 amTypically classy performance from Rudy. Audio clips are up here.

September 11th, 2008 at 5:15 amThis is an extremely important issue that Obama’s campaign and the Democrats must deal with during this campaign.sohbet The Republicans continue to degenerate to outright falsehoods. What are we to do when the press will not intervene to set the record straight?Bedava mp3 indir How do we cope with maintaining an offense versus wasting time and messaging on spurious arguments?
