The Sarah Palin Digest: What We Know About McCain’s Running Mate

palinbanner.jpg

Very little was known nationally about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) until Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) selected her as his running mate on Aug. 29. Tonight, Palin will be speaking in St. Paul, giving what the media are billing as “the most anticipated speech of the Republican National Convention.” The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza writes:

Palin is the most unknown vice presidential pick in recent history and, as such, her nationally televised acceptance speech will function as her first real introduction to the Republican Party and the average American voter.

McCain has admitted that he didn’t choose Palin as his running mate until the last minute, and it increasingly appears that his campaign did an incomplete, slapdash job vetting her.

With new information on her record coming out hour by hour, it’s hard to digest Palin’s full record. With that in mind, ThinkProgress has put together The Sarah Palin Digest, compiling what the public has learned in just a few short days about the former mayor from Wasilla, AK. We’ll continue to update the digest as more information comes out, and let us know in the comments section if there’s anything we missed.

Check out The Sarah Palin Digest here.

Thank you TP for a beginning outline of our right-wing extremist, Ms. MooseKiller, who pretends to be just a concerned PTA mom. She is actually the Queen of Earmarks in Alaska. She hasn’t bothered to give our war of aggression on Iraq much thought (5 years of criminal occupation; one million Iraqis dead in their graves): that damning admission should alone be enough to disqualify her from higher office…

Wait, McCain is now saying “The nonsense is over”. They can slice and dice Obama on personal issues all they want but don’t touch his candidate. How about her claim that building her precious gas pipeline was a “task from God”?

How about the refusal to turn over the emails (on which her husband was copied) in the Troopergate investigation with claims of executive privilege?

  17. DidHeJustSayThat says:

    The End of An Argument:

The McCain campaign is putting out the leading women of the party to hightlight Gov. Palin’s “Executive Experience,” in comparison to Barack Obama. This has been the argument many have offered in defense of the newcomer as she is painfully being introduced on the national stage. After admitting this election “is not about the issues” facing the American people.

Up until approx. 18 months ago Gov. Palin was indistinguishable from millions of proud Americans: A mediocre student (U of Idaho Grad), a self professed hockey mom, PTA member, sports newscaster, hunter and fisherwoman, anti-choice devout person of faith, and mayor of a small town.

In constrast, Sen. Obama’s during that same time had graduated top of his class at Harvard Law School, become a civic leader in his own right, Constitutional Law Professor, State Senator of eight years (Ill.), elected to the United States Senate where he served on the Veteran Affairs and Foreign Relations committees.

In the time since, Obama has campaigned to become THE President of the United States of America, defeating the nations largest and richest, most connected political machine in America in the process. He has traveled the world throughout his life, most recently meeting with the leaders of foreign nations to discuss the worlds greatest problems.

In contrast, Governor Palin admitted her focus was on state matters, getting her information on matters such as war, from the television. This is without mentioning the issues of her past that have been brought to the nations attention since last Friday.

Taking nothing away from the Governor, their resumes, despite the McCain campaign’s talking points are not comparable in any light.

In America, we need to have an honest conversation about how to move past the partisan fighting that is holding us back from reaching our potential. We cannot and will not if we are stuck arguing about some of the most trivial matters.

Democrats have made an issue over the Palin pick only because John McCain and the republican party have fought to make this election about Obama’s resume, about his accomplishments – only to tap a small state governor who, no disrespect, doesn’t meet the vice presidential standard John McCain had set himself (and he’s really old).

  18. tarazan says:

McCain had much longer time to find a VP running mate.
He was the Republican Party nominee long time before Obama.
While Obama was competing with Hillary, McCain had all the time he needed to find a running mate…unforunately he flopped big time by choosing Sarah, after meeting her once.
That says a lot about McCain’s presidency and his judgment.

  19. upside99 says:

I dunno…but back in the day when Bush and Cheney got their multiple DUI tickets, you had to be farouking SHIT-FACED here in New Mexico (New Mexico finally did away with their drive-through liquor windows about a decade ago).

I did a fair amount of drunk driving in those days. Early, early mornings would find me fairly often pulled off the interstate, parked under a bridge, sleeping off the pitchers of tequila sunrises I’d have consumed chasing pussy at the T-Bird in Placitas, before trying to get home the 45 miles or so to Santa Fe. Many, (embarrassingly) many times, I’ve been awakened by a gentle tapping at the driver’s side window, where there’d be a Stater inquiring if I was alright. Upon my assurance that i was just sleeping off a buzz, they’d wave and drive away…
That was circa 1970, within a couple of years either way. And it wasn’t true just in New Mexico. It was pretty universal: To get a DUI ticket, you had nearly to be unconscious behind the wheel of a moving vehicle…

Really? Sounds to me like he’s got some bad things to say about Muslim culture. He called on his followers to become suicide bombers:

What you see in Iraq, basically, is a manifestation of what’s going on in this unseen world called the spirit world. … We need to think like Jesus thinks. We are in a time and a season of war, and we need to think like that. We need to develop that instinct. We need to develop as believers the instinct that we are at war, and that war is contending for your faith. … Jesus called us to die. You’re worried about getting hurt? He’s called us to die. Listen, you know we can’t even follow him unless you are willing to give up your life. … I believe that Jesus himself operated from that position of war mode. Everyone say “war mode.” Now you say, wait a minute Ed, he’s like the good shepherd, he’s loving all the time and he’s kind all the time. Oh yes he is — but I also believe that he had a part of his thoughts that knew that he was in a war.

We’d be very grateful for your input. PS. DON’T BACK OFF IN YOUR SEARCH FOR ANSWERS! I think they protest a little too much…something else is out there that we don’t know yet…

It is very difficult to believe in Christianity with the likes of Rapture and Daryl telling us how we need to live.

RaptureReady and Daryl are one and the same.

How about we all chip in a buck and get Daryl a strip-o-gram!

You are a piker! As I understand it, Palin has been hunting FOR the father of her Grandson Trig for months.

Jesus rules this nation so deal with it. God is taking over. The devil will not continue to abide in this nation. Get read because the Rapture is coming soon. Don’t remain on earth when Jesus says, “Come my people come”. Anyway, I have enough of trying to support Gov. Palin on this blog (We have to eat and get dressed before the address). God Bless.

    “God is taking over” ?

No wonder you GOP/Chimpy tools believe that your ‘dear leader’s’ “noble cause” is done in the name of divine inspiration ……..

And if you’ve been naked all day , what’s the point of getting dressed up to watch a speech on TV , and especially one by an idiotic religious zealot like yourself ?

    BTW

Go to hell………….And where was “Jesus” for the thousands of years before this country was ‘discovered’ ?

  89. dasm says:

I think a section on “What fellow Alaskans think” would be great- e.g. the 2 newspapers that were shocked by her nomination– one even said she’s not fit for the VP job. There’s a lot of negativity towards her up there.

And McCain’s whole “leave her alone” schtick, and his refusal to be on Larry King– what garbage! First, McCain, Fox & all the right wing radical pundits have trashed Obama & his wife on everything they say, twisting & smearing their comments into nasty lies. The items on Palin are facts. Guess Repubs still can’t take the truth, & whine about it being brought out. Second- the Larry King thing- a polite, professionally worded question about Palin brings that over-the-top response from McCain? So, the media is not allowed to ask questions about Palin, while Fox et al skip the honest questions & jump to the lying smears night after night after night? Repubs are whining, cringing hypocrites, particularly when the truth comes out. We don’t fall for their hysterics any more. Is this what we can expect from McCain/Palin– don’t ask us any questions or we’ll have hissy-fits?

Finally, the only sexism being blatantly flaunted here comes from the Repubs themselves– trying to say that, because Palin is a woman, we must not ask questions, must not want to know more about her, must not demand to know who this person is that might be VP. Some demented McCain supporter said- would a man be subject to such scrutiny?– uh, yes- Repubs swift boat Democrat men on every issue, every day. A total sexist flip-flop after how they questioned everything about Obama & his wife (who isn’t even running!), & continue to do so, on & on & on. Grow up, Repubs. You are showing yourselves to be snivelling, whining children.

  90. fletc3her says:

This is a good thing to keep up to date and it is important to note that none of this has anything to do with her being a woman. I have real problems with Sarah Palin’s stand on the issues, not that I would expect anything less from John McCain’s running mate.

  91. jb says:

I thought Christians were supposed to use the teachings of Jesus to guide their own lives, not the lives of every other person on earth. If you need an example, check out Jimmy Carter. Somehow he managed ti follow his religious convictions without flaunting them or shoving them down the throats of us non-believers.

The Sarah Palin Digest: What We Know About McCain’s Running Mate»

For starters, we know she kicked the crap out of Obama last night in her acceptance speach.

We know that she can relate to everyday Americans.

We know that she has more executive experience than either Biden or Obama.

We know that she has the highest approval rating of any governor in America.

We know that the democrats are terrified of her.

Can’t wait to see her and Biden debate. I think that you will all be UN-pleasantly suprised :-)

  95. stjack says:

this morning on CNN, McCain spokesperson Nicolle Wallace did not deny that Palin cut Alaska’s budget for special needs programs by 62%.

the youtube video is here as of right now.

of course that was before she had a special needs child. Which brings me to my point. Both of the republican principals have shown that they will change their minds without reservation when it suits them.

McCain was anti-drilling until he talked to the oil companies. He was anti-torture until the party made him fall in line. He though Iran was training al qaeda until Joe Lieberman whispered in his ear.

Palin was for the bridge to nowhere until she found out alaska would have to pay for it. She was for transparent government until it started investigating her for troopergate. And she was against funding programs for special needs children until she had one of her own.

The moral (hehe!) of the story is this: if McCain/Palin wins, you’d better hope to god that your *personal* interests align with theirs, or you can hire enough lobbyists to get the point across. Otherwise, you’re screwed.

  96. Jacqueline says:

Lets see ,she opposed the bridge to no-where but kept the $400 MILLION .
Hey Sarah -it was always about the money, stupid!!!!!
You might as well have built it.
Big deal she didnt have an abortion!! She couldnt !
What person sitting in public office could.
    I mean really -Please!
Then now because she had a down syndrome baby she supports that cause . Previously in Alaska she cut 62% funding for special needs families.
This is more of the same .
Watch what in front of your eyes not whats in my hand .
We aint falling for these same old tactics again
no matter how well Lil ole Miss Sarah does!!!!!

  97. Jacqueline says:

Oh yea I forgot she started her campaign the way all good republicans do today, by using WEDGE ISSUSES. The former mayor couldnt beleive what Sarah brought to Alaska.
    Christian Conservetivism !!
She said Wallisa will have its frist christian mayor(by God.)
The former mayor felt like a heathen , although he beleived in God he didnt go to church much.
Well , here come’s Miss Wedge and voila Miss Wallisa becomes mayor . Now they ‘ll play that down until needed. Obama will win, but hypothedically after they won then they’ll push those veiws that they kept undercover but ones she had all along.
    The Base—–The Base

TP – You say “Palin Denies Man-Made Global Warming.” And she sure seems to when she spoke to Newsmax.

Yet back in January – in the NY Times, Palin says there is justified “worldwide concern over the proven effects of climate change”. And, “Americans should become involved in the issue of climate change by offering suggestions for constructive action to their state governments”.
