Palin Blocked Funds To Help Teenage Mothers

Since news broke that Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R-AK) 17-year old daughter, Bristol, is pregnant, it has been widely reported that both Palin and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) oppose comprehensive sex education.

Today, the Washington Post now reports that Palin has actually gone a step further and cut funding for programs to help teen mothers:

After the legislature passed a spending bill in April, Palin went through the measure reducing and eliminating funds for programs she opposed. Writing her initials on the legislation, Palin reduced funding for Covenant House Alaska by more than 20 percent, cutting funds from $5 million to $3.9 million. Covenant House provides programs and shelters for troubled youths, including Passage House, which is a transitional home for teenage mothers.

A copy of Palin’s line-item veto:

ph2008090202312.jpg

On its website, Passage House describes itself as a place for young mothers “to live with their babies for up to eighteen months while they gain the necessary skills and resources to change their lives.”

McCain has also supported the Family Support Act in 1988, “required teen mothers who receive public assistance to remain in high school and, in some cases, to live with their parents.” There’s no word yet on whether Bristol will still be attending school during her pregnancy.

Digg It!

Update Covenant House has put out a statement disputing the Washington Post's story.

Where is the outrage over President Bush’s “Angry Left,” comments?

Is he the president of the Red States? Or, is he the president of the United States.

It is widely believed that his tax policy and his insistence on a never ending occupation, which he calls a war, are directly linked to the national debt, rise in oil prices, etc., etc., etc.

Now he is waging a PR battle with disaffected Americans. This at a convention in which the party’s nominee is promising more of the same!

I don’t understand how a sitting president can make such partisan statements, statements that show such a lack of respect to the American people.

    DAMNED RIGHT I AM ANGRY!

She tried hard to make the two incidents seem similar. Yet I don’t recall Al Gore supporting any movement to not keep our children away from drugs which would corelate with palen not supporting sex education an insisting that abstinance is the only solution.

This womans has issues that surround her children. She is a failure and it is bad judgement on her part that is directly responsible for it.

We all have kids and they do things that we wish they would not do but to put them in a position designed for failure is bad judgment, period.

  22. citizen_pain says:

Should have expanded on that post. Mark this on the long list of what McCain doesn’t know:

Didn’t know Czechoslovakia IS NOT a country.
Doesn’t know the difference of Sunni and Shiite.
Doesn’t know much about the economy (his own admission)
Didn’t know how may troops were in Iraq at one point in time.
Accused Obama of ignoring the troops when an ad was already out showing the O man shooting hoops with soldiers.

And now, picks a VP and doesn’t know she has a teenage pregnant daughter.

I tell you, the GOP has slipped (thank God). they didn’t used to make these kinds of mistakes.

Guess when you use as a litmus test blind loyalty to an incompetent buffoon like Bu$h, the end result is a party being run by half-ass religious college (that shouldn’t even be accredited) graduates.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Bristol Palin is fortunate she has a supportive family, but not all teens are as lucky. Sarah Palin is wearing blinders.

Palin, like so many conservatives, appears to believe that if we just make it difficult for teens to have babies, they won’t get pregnant. And if we don’t give them accurate information about sex, they won’t have any. And if we tell them to “just say no” to sex and keep their legs crossed, they will.

Well, guess what. We’ve been telling teens not to have sex for many generations now. And they still do. What part of that do these delusional self-righteous wingnuts not understand?

I think I would have thought twice before naming any child of mine (particularly a daughter) “Bristol”, since it’s a British slang term for a woman’s breast.

In cockney rhyming slang, “Bristol City” is the equivalent of “t!tty”, so when a woman is said to have “a great set of Bristols”, it refers to her bustline.

Just more evidence that Sarah doesn’t do her research before acting or speaking…and I thought we already had enough.

Maybe this sentiment doesn’t belong in TP. But my sons’ sucess and failures belong not only to him, but to those who raised him.

TO: All Bloggers Who Support Sen. Obama

    SUBJECT: Media Bias

The media is trying to put up a shield around Gov. Palin by saying things like: “The Democrats have to be careful about how they treat Sara Palin, for fear of being viewed a sexist” and “Sen. Biden can’t go after Sara Palin during the debate because there could be a backlash or he could be considered as being too rough with her or being sexist by being disrepectful to her”, or words to that effect.

That as we all know is a bunch of bullzhit from the media to protect this women. This is politics and she isn’t running for Girl Scout Den Mother, she’s running for Vice President of the United States. If God forbid anything happened to Sen. McCain, she’d be President and have to stand up to dictators like Chavez of Venusala, Putin of Russia, the leaders of Iran, etc. My point is: If the Obama campaign lets the media tell it how to treat her, then they’ve already lost. They need to use Sen. Clinton to say: “Sara Palin is running for VP and she doesn’t get a free pass in the media or from the Obama Campaign because she’s a women. This is politics and if she wants to be VP then she needs to either take the heat for get out of the kitchen. There are no free rides when to dare to run for VP or President of the United States. The media needs to stop trying to make the news and just report it. They shouldn’t be in the business of defending Sara Palin or any other politician running for office”.

This election is going to affect all of your lives like it or not. And to let the media define what is off limits it to let them determine who is elected President. I oppose Sen. McCain based on his positions, not because of the way he looks, or his age, or any other “Politically Correct” Bullzhit. That’s exactly what the P.C. media is trying to do with this women. They want to wrap her in a P.C. blanket to protect her from her own record and problems. Lastly, keep this in mind: The media people you see on TV are all rich and I mean super rich. For example, Wolf Blitzer, Andersen Cooper, Joe Scarborough, and the rest all make at least 5 to 7 million dollars a year in salary. Now what party to you think they support. That’s right (the Republicans) because they want another massive tax cut on that 7 million dollar salary they make.

How many of you make 7 million dollars a year? I’ll bet most of you don’t even make 500 thousand dollars are year. So please join me in contacting the Obama campaign by calling 1-866-765-2008 to try to get them to have Sen. Clinton use the message I suggest they use to counter the media Political Correctness. Please don’t e-mail them, it never gets through, that’s why I ask that you call them and insist on my message being delivered.

I agree that tis is a monumental year of anti-Republican forces converging, but I think all the talk of permanent irrelevance for the GOP is mistaken.

The election of 1964 was also supposed to be the beginning of a permanent liberal consensus, but eight years later Nixon won reelection in the most crushing landslide in history.

It’s cyclical, and when Obama takes office with Democratic majorities in Congress, things will get better but there will always be problems and mistakes. And the Republicans, finding themselves in the minority they so richly deserve, will be newly energized and focused. Their tactics aren’t really suited for being in control, because they’re all about demonization, not problem solving.

In short, they’re not going away, no matter how badly they are crushed this November. I’m afraid the best we can hope for is that they learn some lessons about divisive and frivolous campaigning, and that the current incompetent generation loses favor and is forced into retirement.

The funding in question was not for program operation. It was for a one-time construction project — a facility expansion that had been in the works for some time. And the governor cut the funding by 20%, forcing the agency to shift funds from other sources and other uses to cover to the shortfall

It doesn’t look like the WaPo article is very accurate, but it’s no more deceitful than Immigration’s framing of the issue.

Palin didn’t single out teenage mother’s for cost cutting. And when we finally cut funding on a national level to address the burgeoning debt, their will be many individual constituencies that will lament the reductions.

We can argue priorities. That’s valid – but, Palin cut much more than just the Covenant House. And we as a national will have to implement similar broad based cuts (in addition to new sources of revenue, ie taxes) if we are ever really going to seriously address the debt.

For that matter. Any politician who proclaims that their policies will impose their private religious Beliefs on others should not be allowed to run for any office. And I would be thrilled if such persons were deported.

  73. backup says:

pete. Deportation is a little over the top. But, the exposure of the candidate using their faith to govern (with the assumption that future behavior would be similar) should be grounds for disqualification.

Line item #7 says “Association – John Trigg.” Now isn’t her son’s name Trig? The on Wikipedia, someone posting under the name of “Young Trigg” confessed to changing information about Sarah Palin. To many “triggs/trigs” for my liking.

Reply to #56 Uncle Ho: Ok I give up, you guys are right about the bold. Just trying to get noticed, but went about it the wrong way. You guys missed the entire point by focusing on the print size. If you guys care about this election or country, then we need to team up to help win rather than just blog to each other. Sitting around typing messages for each other doesn’t get any of us or the country anywhere. Like I said, I oppose Sen. McCain/Palin on the issues, not because she’s a women or he’s 72 years old.

The point I was attempting to make is, the media’s attempt to wall Sara Palin off from fair criticism or an examination of her record. They (the media) are trying to influence this election by putting her off limits. Being a women does not give her the right to hide from her record or the positions of the McCain campaign. If she wants to play in the arena with men, then she has to play by and be held to the same rules and standards. We the Republican party is against affirmative action only when they aren’t trying to use it to her advantage.

I have nothing against women at all, my wife, mother, sister, and daugthers are all women. If they want a job, then they have to compete for it just like any man would. My other point was the Obama campaign needs to have Sen. Clinton and other Democratic women call the Republicans, McCain and Sara out on this attempt to avoid scrutiny of Sara by claiming “sexism”. If Sen. Obama came out and said, “They are attacking me based on “racism”, his campaign would lose in a landslide. But McCain/Palin is playing the “Sexist Card” and getting away with it.

This is American and she wants to be VP, a heart beat away from the Presidency and if she’s not qualified, then she shouldn’t be elected. I know I don’t trust her to stand up to dictators like Putin of Russia, Iran or any other totalitarin leader. My point is if she can’t defend herself from Joe Biden, how can she stand up to Putin? Does anyone on this site actually feel comfortable about this women deciding if we go to war or not. I don’t believe she’s got the experience, knowledge or guts to stand up to Iran, Russia, Pakistan, or any other tin horn dictator.

  77. Uncle Ho says:

Shadow; thank you for your posting above in normal type. It is easier on our eyes.

  78. texaslady says:

By not allowing the press or anyone to ask hard questions of Ms Palin, she won’t have to acknowledge how ill prepared she is. Women I have talked with, even my conservative friends are shocked and insulted that mccain thinks just a female body will bring votes. We are intelligent enough to want a thoroughly vetted and experienced person in second command. We had 8 years of on the job training with bush and look where we are now.

Thanks for the plain text. I was able to read it easily and I agreed with everything you said.

Please know, however, that many of us are doing more than just blogging. We are writing letters to our editors, we are getting our friends and acquaintances (and even total strangers, where possible) registered to vote, we are doorbelling for Obama, and we aren’t allowing GOP sock puppets to spout their talking points anywhere within our earshot without challenging them.

Very well said, as always, missm. Personally, I will do all within my limited means to prevent anyone with an (R) after their name from gaining office. Unless and until a new “conservative” movement arises and makes punishing their guilty predecessors their first priority. I seriously doubt that will happen in my lifetime but, a guy can hope.

And I’ve let various legislators know my thoughts since “snail-mail” was the only means of communication. Let us hope that we have not been forced to revisit the “pony express” before “conservatives” figure out we have to conserve our resources.
