Romney mocks Gore for non-existent private jet.

Last night, at the Republican National Convention, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (R) called for “the immediate drilling for more oil off of our shores” and followed with a personal attack on Vice President Al Gore that received thunderous applause:

And I have one more recommendation for energy conservation — let’s keep Al Gore’s private jet on the ground!

Watch it:

ThinkProgress contacted Gore spokesperson Kalee Kreider, who replied, “Gore doesn’t own a jet.”

Digg It!

This is an extremely important issue that Obama’s campaign and the Democrats must deal with during this campaign. The Republicans continue to degenerate to outright falsehoods. What are we to do when the press will not intervene to set the record straight? How do we cope with maintaining an offense versus wasting time and messaging on spurious arguments?

That’s too bad. I wonder if Romney would consider selling him Air Romney – I doubt the Mittster has much use for it these days.

    correct.

I agree with JMOHR – we know the Rovian M.O. – attack the opposition on your weak point. (case in point, the dems that grew up on the farm are elitists). Make the opposition spend time denying your falsehoods (it is much easier to spread a falsehood than to spend the amount of time to deny it – plus it diverts you from your message). As a bonus, if the dems come back and accuse the repub McCain as being an elitist, they look like a childish copycat.

A lie told often enough might still be a lie, but it becomes the “truth” in popular discourse. Think Gore. Think Kerry. Hell, think McCain 2000. This is the Way of GOP Campaigning. And it’s worked in the past.

Question is, have all those who have somehow unbelievably failed to make up their mind be swayed by issues or the narrative.

  26. tom says:

attack the opposition on your weak point. (case in point, the dems that grew up on the farm are elitists)

I think that it is darker and more devious than that. However, it is still Rovian.

There is a developing pattern of speaking in republican “code” and it has definite racial undertones.

Sen. Westmoreland (R – Georgia) described Obama as “uppity” recently. When pressed, he changed his description to “elitist”. This is becoming the republican catch-word blacks who don’t know their place. It’s the typical Southern strategy that sank McNumbNuts with the famous phone polling in South Carolina in 2000.

I am also beginning to think that the demonizing of “community organizer” has a similar purpose. Failin’ Palin would have us believe that they are unaccountable trouble-makers. And don’t forget that Martin Luther King was a community organizer.

The republicans are masters at playing the fear card and they are going to be working it hard. They will lie, cheat and steal to retain their power.

The biggest lie of all has to do with taxes and social programs. They prey on the fear of the upper class that they will lose what they have — and the message spills over to the lower classes who fear they won’t get what they want.

The republican ticket is a symbol and tool of this soft bigotry. It must be defeated.

Sarah Palin is a lesbian. She has a second, secret family living in Santa Barbara, California.

John McCain was brainwashed while in custody. He was programmed to fire off nuclear missiles in major American cities during the first week of his presidency. Codeword: yellowteeth.

Wait, Mitt needs work. How about we pair him up with MiniMe and bring back Fantasy Island? Mitt Romney could take Ricardo’s role. And the seats on the private jet to Fantasy Island could be upholstered with Corinthian leather.

I don’t take Mr. Breck and his comments seriously. It has become the a joke to me. The pot calling the kettle black. Mitt Romney is certainly not a visitor at IHop, McDonalds, etc. The idiot used his own dinero for his campaign. Did Al Gore dig into his kitty when he ran as President in 2000? I think not. Besides, Al Gore is not running for anything which makes Romney’s comment more laughable. And this is coming from buffoon that was asked this question from one of the GOP Presidential debates:

A hypothetical question about whether he would seek Congress’s approval before taking action against Iran. Romney answered this way:

“You sit down with your attorneys and {have them} tell you what you have to do, and then added “but obviously the president of the United States has to do what’s in the best interest of the United States to protect us against a potential threat.”

  46. SP Biloxi says:

Another shoe drops on Palin today:

The GOP candidate for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, may be facing yet another ethics investigation back in her home state of Alaska. An ethics complaint obtained by NBC News was filed Wednesday by the police officers union in Alaska, requesting a probe into possible wrongdoing by the governor or her office. It was brought on behalf of state trooper Mike Wooten, an ex-brother-in-law of Palin who is at the center of the “Troopergate” scandal.

  49. EugeneDebs says:

This is typical of the GOP. Facts, reality, truth, these concepts mean nothing to them. They are going to say whatever is ideologically serviceable and couldnt care less whether its a lie or not. Ronnie Raygun proved to them there is no downside to lying to their base. Tracy proves the point perfectly. A lie? So what it makes the point doesnt it? Now normal human beings would understand that if you really HAD a point you wouldnt have to lie to make it but the GOP base wants to be fed their raw meat and stroked and have no USE for strictures on that raw meat, you know, things like TRUTH, HONESTY, INTEGRITY. Those things are for elitist Dems. Lying is fine with them as long as those lies do one of two things. Fit with that elaborate fantasy they have dreamed up in their heads and attack the ‘OTHER’. A lie that fits their fantasy delusions is welcome and an indisputable FACT that doesnt evokes anger and frustration. It must be a sad way to go through life.

Oh please explain to me how your amazing mind reading powers work. You KNOW what Romney MEANT which isnt what he SAID how exactly? Oh thats right you are STUPID so you just THINK you have amazing mind reading powers. You THINK whatever needs to be true as a convienience for your argument becomes true for that reason alone. Gore DOES fly commercial when he can. We all know you idiots would like to chain Gore to his home instead of doing the good work he is doing. Like he could take a bicycle to China. Part of my post dissapeared I will try again. It isnt that I am a liar it is that you are unbelievably STUPID. What a weak attempt to change the argument to a strawman no one is arguing. Did Romney say Gore shouldnt USE a private jet? Why no he didnt he talked about GORES PRIVATE JET. That is saying Gore has his own jet. THAT is known as a lie. IT is NOT a lie for me to point out that Romeny is LYING. It is an embarassment that I have to dumb this down to a level a four year old would find condescending because you are so incredibly ignorant. IF I had said Gore never flies on a Private jet you would have had your first actual point in your posting history. I didnt. If you ever learn to read you will understand that so congratulations on your unbroken string of ignorant and worthless posts.

  60. EugeneDebs says:

Darn half my post dissapeared again so to recap. No carbon based lifeform that manages to breathe could be as stupid as you. You must either be a leftwinger trying to make rightwingers look way bad or you are just a liar. It might be yours to the extent you USE it but it wouldnt really be correct to call it YOUR CAR. Does Gore LEASE a specific jet that would be called HIS? I see no evidence this is true are you going to cough some up? Oh you arent? Imagine my suprise so if he doesnt have a SPECIFIC JET on long term lease then your made up hypothetical WHAT IF doesnt work at ALL does it? If he flies contract each time that would be more like SHORT TERM RENTAL of a car and NO ONE would call that YOUR car they would call it a rental.

Again maybe he should had said for the weak minded:
