Despite Saying Working Mothers Pursue ‘False Hopes And Fading Illusions,’ Schlafly Endorses Palin

The far right has largely embraced Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) choice of Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) as his vice presidential running mate. But as the St. Louis Beacon recently wrote, few Republicans have been “more gleeful” than Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly:

The more Democrats talk about Sarah Palin’s lack of experience, the more it hurts Obama,” Schlafly says, “because it makes us realize he (Obama) doesn’t have any executive experience. Also, I object to him because he’s a guy who has never worked with his hands. He’s just an elitist who has done nothing but community organizing.”

Schlafly has also called Palin a “breath of fresh air.” “She’s right on every issue,” she added. In fact, two months ago, Schlafly had already asked Palin to speak at a Republican National Coalition for Life session at the convention this week. At the last minute, however, the McCain campaign pulled Palin from the event.

Schlafly’s embrace is hypocritical. She is so eager to endorse the Republican vice presidential choice that she’s abandoning her long-held conservative beliefs. In the past, Schlafly has railed against working women:

The flight from the home is a flight from yourself, from responsibility, from the nature of woman, in pursuit of false hopes and fading illusions.

Focus on the Family’s James Dobson has similarly jumped away from the ship of conservative values. Dobson has accepted the choice of Palin, a mother of five, to run for vice president, calling it “a personal matter.” In the past, however, he has blamed “the supposed crumbling of ‘moral values’ and [the] ‘anarchy that is now rumbling through the midsection of democracy’ on working mothers and ‘permissiveness.’” “A little push in any direction and she could go over the edge,” Dobson said about working mothers in 1998.

One of the few conservatives who has stuck to her ideology is Dr. Laura, who has expressed disappointment in the pick of Palin. “Marriages and the welfare of children suffer when a stressed-out mother doesn’t have time to be a woman, a wife, and a hands-on Mommy,” wrote Dr. Laura earlier this week.

Digg It!

    Schafly endorses Palin??

    Three words: Kiss of Death!!!

  3. raynman says:

it’s nice how these Republicans talk about their convictions and how willing they are to throw them all away just for a whiff of power….

  4. stateofthedivision says:

You can’t beat religious contortionists at their own game, as they make up the rules.

If they came up with apologetics to make the mixed messages of the Bible work out, they sure can squeeze Mrs. Palin into the VP roll.

I think she’s much weaker on reform and energy. Exactly how did she take on Senator Teddy? And how does the governor of Alaska describe the Exxon Valdez spill as 11,000 gallons of fuel when it was 10.8 million gallons of crude oil?

  5. Badmoodman says:

“The more Democrats talk about Sarah Palin’s lack of experience, the more it hurts Obama,” Schlafly says,

    – - Well, Schlafly got something right. The Democrats need to ignore her and hammer mercilessly on McCain. After, he’s George Bush, on steroids.

  6. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Dear Mrs. Palin: It is time to stop slinging your GOP BS, lies, smears and slimes. Daily Kos received a comment that said, “Jesus was a community organizer.” So, are you, Mrs. Palin, attacking Jesus Christ?

  7. Cal Malenky says:

Meanwhile, Michelle Obama gave up her job to be there for her kids and Barack. So who’s more “traditional”

  8. pete says:

Ms. Schlafly, and her ilk, would endorse the Great Satan Himself if he had an (R) after His name.

  9. DidHeJustSayThat says:

Well, I for one am Absolutely SHOCKED.

Check out Andrew Sullivan’s blog, he’s got s segment of Jon Stewart that’ll make you gag from the reversals of people closely involved with the current campaign.

Oh yeah, Obama is an elitist and possibly uppity!

  10. TrevorAlan says:

And I guess Dr. Laura woudl know about being a bad wife and mommy.

Seriously, as much as I dislike her, a point for being more consistent in her stupidity than Schlaffly

She doesn’t approve of him because he doesn’t work with his hands? You mean, like clearin’ brush? Or did she mean pickin’ cotton?

What has McStain ever done with his hands, besides cheating on his wife?

If there was a God, Phyllis Shafly would have open herpes sores all over her ugly face.

    PEACE

  12. tom says:

I agree. Let’s dispense with this silly little distraction named Failin’ Palin — McNumbNuts’ cynical, calculating, baldly political mistake in his first “presidential” decision. It’s time to focus upon McNumbNuts again. Here is how I would suggest that we do it.

I think that we can dismiss her entire snide, sarcastic, egotistical, screechy diatribe from last night with one simple, declarative sentence that is right into her vaunted Christian belief system:

“Jesus Christ was a community organizer; Pontius Pilate was a governor.”

    Case closed. Next.

  13. pete says:

You got that right, stateofthedivision. There is no logic to appeal to. It’s impossible to out-argue them so, we MUST outnumber them. If not? We could witness the end of the “American experiment”.

Or Bush? Or Cheney? Or Mittens? Or Rudy?

  15. pete says:

I would like to ignore Ms. Palin but, it’s difficult to ignore the Worst Veep Candidate Ever.

If they want her to take the role of attack poodle? I think the opposition should use her bald-faced lies, and dangerously insane worldview, as a club.

Community organizers must be the absolute bane of existence for religious-types. The Palin speachwriters had her belittle them and now these Jesus-freaks. Damn, what sticks in their pants about community organizers so much for goodness sake??

It also shows how little they respect their religion since Jesus was the original community organizer.

That would be an improvement. Or you could even say it would be a blessing in disguise.

  23. Marie says:

This whoring b!tch made my blood boil when she first came into prominence years ago. She has not changed and neither has the temperature of my blood.
She was preaching that women had to stay home where they belonged while she traipsed across the country collecting speaking fees.
She was a working mother who left her children in the care of babysitters, while she was exoriating women who did the same.

Of course, being a repugnican (synonymous with hyporcite) she now supports Palin who is a working mother.

Like most social workers, they tend to be rather liberal Democrats.

  25. jurassicpork says:

    More examples of Republican cocksuckery.

This Schlafly quote is a great catch. It never ceases to amaze me at how readily Republicans will abandon their principles when confronted with a candidate who doesn’t share them.

If they’re so willing to jettison their ideologies, then why vote for their party? What’s more important than ideology during an election?

  26. QUALAR says:

I never believed in female demons until I read about this succubus’ biography.

  27. pete says:

I have to disagree, a bit, Bilbo. If, indeed, the Jesus of the Buy-bull ever actually existed, he wasn’t “the original” anything. He was more like a cheap knock-off of Confucius.

Plus, one could make the argument that Jesus was an anarchist. And I don’t think that “community organizer” applies to those who wish to direct their “community” away from the society as a whole. But? I quibble.

And the Reishwhiners’ rejection of anything remotely peaceful about the message of Christ is apparent and well-documented. “Christian” GOOPERS are amongst the most unchristian people on the planet. If God existed, and gave a rip about the little speck of mud we call home? The Bastards would burst into flames every time they opened their crooked mouths.

  28. NoMoreBush says:

I understand as this fall’s new fashion in Republican circles, “commuity organizer” is the new black for the N word. Makes sense it goes with that lovely elitist (read “uppity”) scarf.

  29. gummitch says:

Phyllis the Evil and Palin both made snotty comments about “only a community organizer”. More hypocrisy from the party that claims over and over that government shouldn’t be in the business of helping out poor people.

  30. wwew says:

What does a sell out like Phyllis Schlafly know about being a True Conservative™. Debbie Schlussel is also keeping it real along with Dr. Laura: She attacks Mr. Mom, Todd Palin’s masculinity, right wing hypocrisy concerning Bristol Palin’s pregnancy, and even the names Palin chose for her kids.

I hesitate to call her consistency intellectual though.

  31. pete says:

Um, I’m confused. Hasn’t (sy)Phyllis spent decades organizing a community of women, against their own interests? Is she not a “community organizer”?

  32. mongo says:

“Also, I object to him because he’s a guy who has never worked with his hands.”

    As opposed to…the current president?

Or mcsame? The son of admirals?

  33. pete says:

Hahahahaha. Fortunately, most of the American electorate are pretty clear in their opinion: Ms. Palin is dangerously dogmatic and anyone who would consider her worthy of the second highest office in the country is dangerously lacking in judgment. Which would explain why Reichwhiners are saying things like “it’s over”. At least when they don’t know the tape is running.

Perhaps that’s why the gap has been growing about 2% per day since her introduction? But seriously, if the thought of Ms. Palin within a heartbeat of the Presidency doesn’t scare the crap out of you? GET PROFESSIONAL HELP!!!

  34. pete says:

And if the Enquirer’s allegations of an affair are proven true? The bond between the “Religious” Right and the GOP will snap.

Heck! If Ms. Palin proves half as bad as her BIO? She may be the perfect tool to cause the “True 20%” to become several, competing, 5%-8%.

Even if the scandals go away, a crushing defeat of the GOP may accomplish the same goal. And that’s about the highest service one could provide to our country in this day and age.

  35. pete says:

    Plus, before I forget:

Her embarrassing self-effacing speech, and her apparent eagerness to be identified by her family, Faith, and party, will keep “Hillary supporters” away in droves.

Admirers of strong women don’t usually like women who talk like non-entities. And I don’t know anyone who trusts a liar.

  36. stateofthedivision says:

And if the Enquirer’s allegations of an affair are proven true? Then we now understand the key criteria in the McCain vetting process.

“Sarah and I are close, real close…”

  37. enough says:

Did Phyllis Schlafly ever work with her hands? I’ve worked with mine. I don’t recommend it. The one important thing I learned on the farm was the value of education.

Let’s say we have one person who was the Law Review Editor at Harvard and one who was a fish picker. When it comes to leading the country, I’ll choose the Harvard Law Review Editor,

  38. The Shadow says:

Let me take this opportunity to say to Phylis Schlafly: You are beneath contempt and lower than a pig. You represent the worst kind of extremist, racist, bigoted, hateful, low down no good people in this country. One day you will burn in hell for what you’ve done in the name of conservatism. You are no better than a NAZI in a dress. I’m sure you supported Hilter and what he did to the jews during WWII. You condemned yourself to hell the moment you first look down your long nose and people less forturnate than you, you old cow!

  39. Zooey says:

    Oh for f uck’s sake.

Phyllis Schlafly was a WORKING MOTHER.

    Self-loathing hypocritical women suck.

  40. EugeneDebs says:

    Nettles Says:

As a McCain supporter, I admit that I was gutted (completely) by the Palin selection due to her complete lack of foreign policy experience. However, as the holier-than thou far left fringe doth continue to protest too much, I realize that far left will probably blow this election for their incredibly dynamic and likable candidate with their inability to know when to STFU.
All Democrats had to do was to shut up (notice how Obama and Biden have been overly polite and inconspicuous?)and let her inexperience speak for itself. Instead, Democrats have decided to do what they do best: Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So you admit that in his first executive decision. McCain picked a lightweight and worthless candidate. Regardless of YOUR guys showing how little they have to offer you are inscensed that Democrats actually TALKED about her being a lightweight worthless candidate. Your complete lack of logic is noted and I suggest you go pour yourself a nice steaming cup of STFU yourself

  41. Alecto says:

Is that skank Syphlis Shafly still lurking on this god green earth? I figured she was raptured by now. YOu all need to step up your prayin’. Lets all pray for Syphlis to be raptured ASAP. Get with it now, ya hear.

  42. Anacher Forester says:

Looks like Phyllis got the memo too. It’s almost comical to watch everyone from McCain to Dobson to Schlafy throw their principles to the wind in the pursuit of power. And how they sell themselves so cheaply.

    Andrew Sullivan Is A Fraud

  43. Max-1 says:

    .

    WAIT…
So Phyllis Schlafly was AGAINST women’s equality BEFORE she was for it?

    But, but, but Phyllis,

    Where’s his mommy…?
