Republicans are the owners, lock-stock-and-barrel, of hypocritical stupidity.

But in order for the artist to get paid, one must first ASK permission to use the song, and very rarely from the artist directly. There are clearing houses of music licensees who handle the publishing/copyright compensation/distribution for any tune requested.

Sometimes, the artists isn’t aware until the check comes in the mail.

However in this case, as in most political scenes, no permission was obtained.

My group had a song used by the Texas RNC for one of Shrub’s Austin rallies in 2000 and we nor our publisher were ever contacted, much LESS EVEN compensated for using our music.

But as an artist, you’ve got to know these things happen and are often beyond our control (or compensation).

I’m just saying that the properly socialist thing to do would be for all art to become public domain after a small period of time during which the artist should be able to profit from the work.

To those who seem to think I’m a Republican troll, I’m actually more aligned with the Bolivarian socialism Chavez is attempting to establish (mixed feelings about his methods but the ideals are very nuanced, with an emphasis on human creativity and expression being essential rights, as well as community values being important).

Furthermore, I would call myself a creative individual who composes music and literary non-fiction. I also use free software and believe information should be free to all for non-commercial uses. On that point alone, McCain should be allowed to use the songs non-commercially (though one could argue [myself included] that American elections are highly commercial!)
